Paying To Play: Supply Management In Montana's Dairy Industry, Laura Ginsburg Jan 2013

Paying To Play: Supply Management In Montana's Dairy Industry, Laura Ginsburg

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Montana’s dairy industry is unique among US states because of its supply management program, which allocates quota to limit how much fluid milk can be produced and sold within the state. The amount of quota is set and price varies with market conditions; therefore, quota adds to a farm’s production costs. This paper presents findings from in-depth interviews with 17 dairy farmers to learn how quota has affected on-farm decision-making and how they perceive the impacts of quota on the statewide industry. Farmers tend to be spilt between those who think it affected their on-farm decisions and those who felt …

Prioritizing The Upper Clark Fork River Tributaries For Instream Flow Restoration, Catherine B. Berg Jan 2013

Prioritizing The Upper Clark Fork River Tributaries For Instream Flow Restoration, Catherine B. Berg

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Off stream uses of water in the west have left many rivers and streams depleted, including the Upper Clark Fork River and its tributaries. As drought conditions persist or worsen, this issue will become more critical. Public-private partnerships, like the Upper Clark Fork Steering Committee, have formed to monitor the flow of our rivers. In order to assist the Steering Committee and river advocacy groups working within the Upper Clark Fork River Basin, this paper provides a comprehensive review of the studies on existing flows and target flows in the upper river, synthesizes past priorities for stream restoration, and provides …

Putting Scientific Information Into The Service Of Environmental Justice For Residents Facing Groundwater Contamination, Yvonne Emily Sorovacu Jan 2013

Putting Scientific Information Into The Service Of Environmental Justice For Residents Facing Groundwater Contamination, Yvonne Emily Sorovacu

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Opportunity, Montana is a small town within the 300 square mile Anaconda Smelter Superfund site in Western Montana. Waste from 100 years of ore processing has impacted the area. Arsenic exceeds Montana drinking water standards within the aquifer system feeding residential wells of Opportunity, causing resident concern about current and future safety of drinking water. The project described in this paper engages with this context from an environmental justice (EJ) perspective that views meaningful participation of affected communities as integral for sound and democratic decisions about environmental risks. Because Opportunity residents are left out of important decision making processes regarding …

Acceptance Of Wildlife Crossing Structures On Us Highway 93 Missoula, Montana, Jeremiah P. Purdum Jan 2013

Acceptance Of Wildlife Crossing Structures On Us Highway 93 Missoula, Montana, Jeremiah P. Purdum

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Wildlife and humans have always interacted on the landscape. However, growing transportation infrastructure and its associated use are causing a large increase in direct and indirect effects on wildlife populations. Humans can also directly be affected, for example, through wildlife-vehicle collisions that impact human safety and lead to economic costs for individuals and society. In some cases transportation and wildlife agencies have implemented substantial mitigation measures along roadways in an attempt to reduce wildlife-vehicle collisions and to provide for safe crossing opportunities for wildlife. Wildlife-specific crossing structures are now increasingly considered in road construction. Reconstruction projects and a range of …

Aliens Are Animals Too! Ethics And Stigmatization Within Invasive Species Rhetoric, Gina A. Brockway Jan 2013

Aliens Are Animals Too! Ethics And Stigmatization Within Invasive Species Rhetoric, Gina A. Brockway

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

Management of nonnative invasive species (NIS) frequently involves removing animals or plants from an area in order to conserve native communities. Methods of removing invasive animals include killing individuals, justified as a means of protecting broader ecological values. This management approach, however, is often controversial and highlights differences between discourses of environmental and animal rights. The former values life at a holistic level while the latter emphasizes the value of individual lives. Language both reflects and shapes belief and action, and to assess these divergent views, I compare invasive species rhetoric of a prominent environmental organization with that of an …

The Importance Of Sea Turtle Conservation On Nesting Trends Of Sea Turtles Along Florida’S Atlantic Coast: 1982--‐2012, Barbara Cody Jan 2013

The Importance Of Sea Turtle Conservation On Nesting Trends Of Sea Turtles Along Florida’S Atlantic Coast: 1982--‐2012, Barbara Cody

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

Sea turtles have been an important factor of the world’s oceans for millions of years. Until about 100 years ago, they were not protected at all, and in the last 40 years they have received greater protection. This increase in protection, along with conservation efforts of organizations around the globe, has contributed to increased nesting trends for at least Florida’s three main species of sea turtles: Loggerhead(Caretta caretta), Green (Chelonia mydas), and Leatherback (Dermochelys coriacea). These three species have all had a positive increase in nesting activity along Florida’s Atlantic coast since 1989. This rise in nesting activity can be …

Feminist Environmental Justice: Confronting Legacies Of Racial Segregation In Jupiter, Florida, Britni Hiatt Jan 2013

Feminist Environmental Justice: Confronting Legacies Of Racial Segregation In Jupiter, Florida, Britni Hiatt

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

Despite pervasive claims that the United States is a ‘post-racial’ society, racial segregation did not end after Jim Crow and the Civil Rights movement. Today, environmentally hazardous zoning and biotechnology land developments continue to determine which families are most exposed to risks of pollution and displacement, and which families are not. Utilizing documentation of local history and research in Women’s Studies, Eco-Feminism, and Critical Race Studies, I examine the legacy of racial segregation in Jupiter, Florida, by charting the biotechnology ‘cluster’ encroaching upon the historical Limestone Creek community. In this feminist analysis are challenges to assumptions about race, gender, class, …

The Ethnography Of On-Site Interpretation And Commemoration Practices: Place-Based Cultural Heritages At The Bear Paw, Big Hole, Little Bighorn, And Rosebud Battlefields, Helen Alexandra Keremedjiev

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Using a memory archaeology paradigm, this dissertation explored from 2010 to 2012 the ways people used place-based narratives to create and maintain the sacredness of four historic battlefields in Montana: Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument; Nez Perce National Historical Park- Bear Paw Battlefield; Nez Perce National Historical Park- Big Hole National Battlefield; and Rosebud Battlefield State Park. This research implemented a mixed-methods approach of four data sources: historical research about on-site interpretation and land management of the battlefields; participant observations conducted during height of tourism season for each battlefield; 1,056 questionnaires administered to park visitors; and 32 semi-structured interviews with …

The Moral Layers Of Fracking: From Basic Rights And Obligations To Human Flourishing, Angela L. Hotaling Jan 2013

The Moral Layers Of Fracking: From Basic Rights And Obligations To Human Flourishing, Angela L. Hotaling

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

As it is currently being discussed, hydraulic fracturing or “fracking” is the unconventional method of drilling and extracting oil and natural gas. Fracking starts at the earth’s surface where the technology is created and the sites are constructed. The process continues downward: drills pierce thousands of feet vertically and then horizontally underground. Then, millions of gallons of water mixed with sand and chemicals (referred to as “fracking fluid” or “slick water”) are pumped at high pressure through the pipe so as to fracture shale deposits and release gas or oil. Whether to allow fracking and its associated industrial activity is …

The Value Of Knowing: Public Lands Monitoring By Non-Agency Groups, Aaron Richard Olsen Jan 2013

The Value Of Knowing: Public Lands Monitoring By Non-Agency Groups, Aaron Richard Olsen

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

It is generally recognized that in order to make informed federal land management decisions, such decisions need to be based on information gathered from monitoring of those lands. While some monitoring is being conducted by federal land management agencies, it is happening too infrequently and is often inadequate for properly informing land management decisions. In an attempt to fill this gap non-agency groups have begun monitoring federal public lands themselves. It appears that through recent congressional authorizations, policy reforms, and agency initiatives monitoring by non-agency groups is being supported at every government level. While theoretically this transfer of responsibility from …

Supporting Transitions To Resilient Irrigation Systems: Findings From Southern Kyrgyzstan, Peter Michael Igoe Jan 2013

Supporting Transitions To Resilient Irrigation Systems: Findings From Southern Kyrgyzstan, Peter Michael Igoe

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

This thesis presents findings from research conducted in Southern Kyrgyzstan, which followed nongovernmental organization (NGO) efforts to support climate change adaptation, and to support more “resilient” community-managed irrigation systems. Findings suggest that current NGO partnerships with Water User Associations (WUAs) frequently amount to financial and technical transactions, to preserve inherited infrastructure and resist disturbance. “Enhancing resilience” is pursued in an effort to maintain existing technical configurations of canals and water resources, despite altered socio-political and environmental conditions. Findings suggest increasing disassociation between irrigation constituents and the institutions and managers that are supposed to direct their grievances through legitimate democratic channels. …

Aerosol And Cloud Condensation Nuclei Distribution During Summer Season Over Northern Region Of Thailand, Pakdee Chantraket, Nuenghatai Tantiplubthong, Thitikorn Chanyatham

Applied Environmental Research

Background aerosol and cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) measurements are crucial to comprehend the impacts of cloud processes and formations. During summer season from March to May 2012 using all 14 flights of research super king air aircraft, aerosol concentrations (CN) and CCN at super-saturation 0.50 % were carried out over seven provinces in the rural background aerosol of northern Thailand. Aerosol size spectra between 20 nm and 50 \mum were also measured with combining measurements from the differential mobility analyzer (DMA), passive cavity aerosol spectrometer (PCASP) and fast-forwarding scattering spectrometer probe (FSSP). CCN concentrations were measured with CCN Counter. In …

Sustainability Initiatives In The Workplace And Employee Productivity, Megan R. Nollman Jan 2013

Sustainability Initiatives In The Workplace And Employee Productivity, Megan R. Nollman

Research Papers

Sustainability in the workplace has the potential to affect many aspects of an organization, including employee productivity. Sustainable designers, such as LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) professionals, claim that sustainability has numerous positive impacts in the workplace. These impacts include fewer employee sick days, increased building occupant satisfaction, and increased employee productivity. Researchers that have studied this claim have found that in many cases, sustainable initiatives and buildings have had a slight to profound positive effects on occupant satisfaction, attendance, and productivity. Lower levels of satisfaction for lighting and acoustics are common, though, because many sustainable workplaces use …

Livelihood Dynamic In Semi Arid Communities: Adapting To Climate Change Around Kainji Lake, Nigeria, Usman Raheem, Felix Olorunfemi, Olutoyin Fashae, Gbenga Awotayo

Applied Environmental Research

The consequences of climate change and extreme meteorological events, particularly for rural dwellers is the collapse of many natural resource based livelihood systems. Thus as an adaptation strategy, many households often need to change their major occupation or supplement it with some other jobs that may be less vulnerable to during extreme weather conditions. This study examines livelihood diversification consequent on climate change and/or extreme weather events in the semi-arid regions of Nigeria. This is with a view to determining the sustainability of adaptation strategies among rural dwellers. Using a mixed method approach, Focus Group Discussion sessions and structured questionnaire …

Synthesis, Characterization, And Properties Of Mononuclear And Dinuclear Ruthenium(Ii) Complexes Containing Phenanthroline And Chlorophenanthroline, Anwar A. Bhuiyan, X. Du

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

The study of photophysical and photochemical properties of ruthenium complexes is of great interest for fundamental practical reasons. Ruthenium complexes have been investigated for use in artificial photosynthesis. This paper deals with the synthesis and spectroscopic investigation of custom-designed ruthenium complexes containing phenanthroline and chloro-phenanthroline ligands. These complexes maybe useful for biological electron-transfer studies. The heteroleptic ruthenium monomer complex Ru(phen)2(Cl-phen) (where phen = 1,10-phenanthroline and Cl-phen=5-chloro-1,10-phenanthroline) was prepared in a two-step procedure previously developed in our laboratory. This monomer complex was used to prepare the ruthenium homometallic dimer complex, (phen)2Ru(phen-phen)Ru(phen)2, by utilizing the Ni-catalyzed coupling reaction. Both complexes were purified …

Climate Impacts On Economic Growth As Drivers Of Uncertainty In The Social Cost Of Carbon, Elisabeth Moyer, Mark D. Woolley, Michael J. Glotter, David A. Weisbach Jan 2013

Climate Impacts On Economic Growth As Drivers Of Uncertainty In The Social Cost Of Carbon, Elisabeth Moyer, Mark D. Woolley, Michael J. Glotter, David A. Weisbach

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

One of the central ways that the costs of global warming are incorporated into U.S. law is in cost-benefit analysis of federal regulations. In 2010, to standardize analyses, an Interagency Working Group (IAWG) established a central estimate of the social cost of carbon (SCC) of $21/tCO2 drawn from three commonly-used models of climate change and the global economy. These models produced a relatively narrow distribution of SCC values, consistent with previous studies. We use one of the IAWG models, DICE, to explore which assumptions produce this apparent robustness. SCC values are constrained by a shared feature of model behavior: though …

Estimating Willingness To Pay For River Amenities And Safety Measures Associated With Shale Gas Extraction, Thomas C. Kinnaman

Faculty Journal Articles

This paper utilizes a Contingent Valuation Method survey of a random sample of residents to estimate that households are willing to pay an average of $12.00 per month for public projects designed to improve river access and $10.46 per month for additional safety measures that would eliminate risks to local watersheds from drilling for natural gas from underground shale formations. These estimates can be compared to the costs of providing each of these two amenities to help foster the formation of efficient policy decisions.

Metallic Mineral Mining In Maine, Kaitlyn Bernard Jan 2013

Metallic Mineral Mining In Maine, Kaitlyn Bernard

Honors Theses

In 2012 the Maine State Legislature passed a bill directing the Maine Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to rewrite the regulations governing metallic mineral mining in Maine. The bill was introduced after pressure from Maine’s largest private land owner and timber company, J.D. Irving, Limited. The company has a lucrative mineral deposit on one of their landholdings in northern Maine and is interested in pursuing a mining development project. The bill aimed to streamline the regulatory framework around mining operations and make the permitting process more conducive to mineral development throughout the state. The 2012 Maine Metallic Mineral Mining Act …
