Changes In Soil Carbon Sequestration In Pinus Massoniana Forests Along An Urban-To-Rural Gradient Of Southern China, H. Chen, W. Zhang, Frank S. Gilliam, L. Liu, J. Huang, T. Zhang, W. Wang, J. Mo

Biological Sciences Faculty Research

Urbanization is accelerating globally, causing a variety of environmental changes such as increases in air temperature, precipitation, atmospheric CO2, and nitrogen (N) deposition. However, the effects of these changes on forest soil carbon (C) sequestration remain largely unclear. Here, we used urban-to-rural environmental gradients in Guangdong Province, southern China, to address the potential effects of these environmental changes on soil C sequestration in Pinus massoniana forests. In contrast to our expectations and earlier observations, soil C content in urban sites was significantly lower than that in suburban and rural sites. Lower soil C pools in urban sites were …

A Pilot Study Testing Intrinsic Strength Factors As Predictors Of Depression In The Hispanic Population With Cardiovascular Disease, Claudia Disabatino Smith, Aaron L. Bayles Oct 2013

A Pilot Study Testing Intrinsic Strength Factors As Predictors Of Depression In The Hispanic Population With Cardiovascular Disease, Claudia Disabatino Smith, Aaron L. Bayles

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Poster presented on: Monday, July 22, 2013, Tuesday, July 23, 2013

Purpose: The purpose of the study was to determine if there is a relationship between self-reported levels of resilience, mastery, and depression scores in Hispanic patients with cardiovascular disease and to study depression screening tools specific to Hispanic patient populations with cardiovascular disease.

Methods: Sample size n=63. Leininger"s Theory of Culture Care Diversity and Universality was the conceptual framework for this non-experimental, non-randomized pilot study conducted by a bilingual research team. The Resilience Scale (Wagnild, 2009), Mastery Scale (Pearlin & Schooler, 1978), and Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (Spitzer, Williams, Kroenke, …

The Role Of Culture In Primiparous Puerto Rican Women's Postpartum Infant And Self-Care, Anne M. Fink Oct 2013

The Role Of Culture In Primiparous Puerto Rican Women's Postpartum Infant And Self-Care, Anne M. Fink

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Session presented on: Monday, July 22, 2013:

Purpose: Hispanics are a population at risk for health disparities with women receiving fewer preventive services, experiencing a higher incidence of postpartum complications, and reporting less satisfaction with the quality of care than non-Hispanic Blacks or Whites. Puerto Ricans are in greater jeopardy of having poor health outcomes than any other Hispanic sub-group yet there have been few studies with this group. With projected Hispanic population growth and increased health care utilization it is imperative to understand the infant care and self-care issues and experiences of primiparous Puerto Rican women in the post-partum …

Pain, Coping And Sleep In Children And Adolescents With Sickle Cell Disease, Joyce Kelly Graves, Eufemia Jacob

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Session presented on: Monday, July 22, 2013:

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine pain, pain coping and sleep and to examine the relationship among pain, pain coping and sleep in children and adolescents with sickle cell disease. Factors (age, gender and number of pain episodes) that predict pain, pain coping and sleep in children also were examined in this population.

Methods: Children (n=39; mean 11.9 - 1.1 years) and adolescents (n=27; mean 15.5 - 0.9 years) with sickle cell disease completed an electronic visual analog scale (eVAS), Adolescent Pediatric Pain Tool, Pain Coping Questionnaire, and Pittsburg Sleep …

Enhancing Clinical Reasoning: Teaching Thinking Through Debriefing, Susan G. Forneris, Diana Odland Neal, Heidi Meyer, Jone Tiffany, Lynnea Myers, Cynthia R. Pivec, Mary Beth Kuehn, Linda Blazovich

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Session presented on: Monday, July 22, 2013:

Purpose: How nurses are educated to think in practice is receiving well-deserved attention calling for the need for innovative and transformative strategies that guide nurses in the use of nursing knowledge and science. Guiding thinking to assist novice nurses to better infer meaning and apply clinical reasoning across contexts is an important teaching strategy. The overall purpose of this multi-site pilot study was to implement a debriefing strategy to determine its impact on clinical reasoning skills with undergraduate nursing students across four different colleges of nursing. This study replicates Dreifuerst's original study using …

Home Thoughts From Abroad: Some Observations On Contract Archaeology In England, James Symonds Oct 2013

Home Thoughts From Abroad: Some Observations On Contract Archaeology In England, James Symonds

Northeast Historical Archaeology

This paper was written following a recent visit by the author to the United States and Canada. It aims to provide a view of contemporary archaeological practice in England for North American readers and to draw comparisons between the working environment of field archaeologists on either side of the Atlantic. Reference is made to the relatively recent growth of commercial archaeology in England and to tensions that have emerged as a consequence of the re-structuring of the profession. It is argued that despite a substantial increase in the level of funding available from the private sector there has been little …

Stringsauto And Mapsss Results For Oaei 2013, Michelle Cheatham, Pascal Hitzler Oct 2013

Stringsauto And Mapsss Results For Oaei 2013, Michelle Cheatham, Pascal Hitzler

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

StringsAuto and MapSSS are two closely related ontology alignment systems. The StringsAuto matcher seeks to explore the limits of a syntactic-only approach to alignment. The MapSSS system then expands on this work by embedding the syntactic matching of StringsAuto within a more complete alignment system that also makes use of semantic and structural information. In this paper we describe the basic operation of the two systems and discuss their performance in the OAEI 2013 evaluation.

Early Humboldtian Influences On Alfred Russel Wallace's Scheme Of Nature [Presented At The Alfred Russel Wallace And His Legacy Royal Society Of London Meeting, 21 October 2013], Charles H. Smith

DLPS Faculty Publications

Alfred Russel Wallace’s 1858 Ternate paper on natural selection is a famous work in the history of science. Beyond his co-discovery of the principle, moreover, Wallace is known for a large number of early applications of the idea, both to biological and biogeographical subjects. Yet how much do we really know about Wallace’s own evolution of thought, and his actual intentions before his views were swallowed up by the inertia of Darwin’s revolution? A number of differences between Wallace’s and Darwin’s views are apparent and have been much treated over the years, but related discussions dwell more on effects than …

Does Residence In An Ethnic Community Help Immigrants In A Recession?, Pengyu Zhu, Cathy Yang Liu, Gary Painter Oct 2013

Does Residence In An Ethnic Community Help Immigrants In A Recession?, Pengyu Zhu, Cathy Yang Liu, Gary Painter

Urban Studies and Community Development Faculty Publications and Presentations

Research on how the residential segregation of immigrant populations has impacted their labor market outcomes presents many challenges because of the fact that immigrants often choose to locate near co-ethnics to share resources and cultural amenities. Because not all immigrants choose to live in these ethnic communities, identification of a causal effect on living in an ethnic community is problematic. The estimation of the effect of living in these ethnic communities is also difficult because it is ambiguous whether such residence will help or harm the labor market outcomes of immigrants. This study implements a number of approaches to help …
