The Anchor, Volume 127.07: October 23, 2013, Hope College

The Anchor: 2013

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

2013 Program, Office Of Academic Affairs Oct 2013

2013 Program, Office Of Academic Affairs

Programs

At its best, a university is a collection of individuals ‐‐ students and faculty ‐‐ focused on learning and discovering new knowledge. For this goal to be realized, a critical element is having faculty members deeply engaged with their disciplines. Scholarship, in the form of journal articles, book chapters, monographs and similar endeavors, creative activity which can take an even wider range of forms, and funded research which explores the boundaries of their disciplines all contribute to such engagement. Through such participation, faculty members stay at the growing edges of their fields, and in so doing, they enrich their intellectual …

St. Peter’S Basilica As Templum Dei: The Continuation Of The Ancient Near Eastern Temple Tradition In The Christian Cathedral, Rachel Ann Seely, Dr. William Hamblin Oct 2013

St. Peter’S Basilica As Templum Dei: The Continuation Of The Ancient Near Eastern Temple Tradition In The Christian Cathedral, Rachel Ann Seely, Dr. William Hamblin

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Inscribed on the entrance to St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome is the inscription Templum Vaticani (Latin for Temple of the Vatican). Upon entering St. Peter’s one can see many reflections of Solomon’s Temple in the architecture and orientation of the building. Even more striking are the similarities between the political and religious roles of St. Peter’s Basilica and those of an ancient Near Eastern temple. John M. Lundquist has developed a typology of elements that permeate temple traditions throughout the ancient Near East.1 Basing my research on this typology I set out to study Christian holy space, specifically the early …

A Translation Of El Muerto Dissimulado By Angela De Azevedo, Jessie L. Christensen, Dr. Valerie Hegstrom

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The sixteenth and seventeenth centuries in Spain have come to be known as the “Golden Age”, due to the incredible flowering of art and literature that took place during that time. Among the greatest accomplishments of the era was prolific growth in both the writing and performance of plays. The works of such playwrights as Calderón de la Barca, Tirso de Molina, and Lope de Vega are already well-known and have been translated into English numerous times. However, many other authors have been forgotten during the last three hundred years. One such author is Angela de Azevedo, a woman whose …

Impact Of The Sudanese Members Of The Church Of Jesus Christ In The Cairo, Egypt Branch, Christiaan James, Dr. James A. Toronto

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The Middle East may rightly be considered the final frontier of Church expansion. Though branches dot the region, they remain small. The Cairo, Egypt branch is an exception. It has been established for over 25 years and is vibrant due to its varied membership. The branch is divided into two markedly different groups: American expatriates and Sudanese refugees. I spent four months in Cairo researching the interplay between these two in order to learn what effect the Sudanese have on the branch, and to determine how best the Church can respond to their needs in order to strengthen them and …

In the early twentieth century, throngs of male Greek immigrants came to Utah. They left their homeland seeking to save their families from impending poverty and to escape draft by the Greek and Turkish armies.1 The jobs they took in Utah mines, smelters, and rail yards were lowpaying and dangerous, but these were the least of the troubles waiting for Greeks in Utah. They found Mormons and other Utah residents to be inhospitable and strange, and they quickly learned to isolate themselves in all-Greek communities.

The Taíno Influence On Modern Dominican Art, Brittany H. Hyatt, Dr. Douglas J. Weatherford Oct 2013

The Taíno Influence On Modern Dominican Art, Brittany H. Hyatt, Dr. Douglas J. Weatherford

Journal of Undergraduate Research

At the time of the arrival of Columbus in 1492, the indigenous Taíno civilization pervaded the island of Hispaniola (now home to Haiti and the Dominican Republic). However, as a result of disease and persecution, the Taíno population would all but disappear within fifty years. The annihilation was so complete, in fact, that the conquering Spaniards had to import African slaves to compensate for the loss of labor. Despite the limited influence of the Taínos in the modern Dominican’s life and ancestry, aspects of this once flourishing culture continue to appear in Dominican art.

Fighting Cross-Cultural Battles: The Chinese-American Assimilation Experience, Karin Mei Li Inouye, Dr. David B. Honey Oct 2013

Fighting Cross-Cultural Battles: The Chinese-American Assimilation Experience, Karin Mei Li Inouye, Dr. David B. Honey

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The immigrant experience for overseas Chinese during the early 1900’s involved extreme adjustments to a new land, new communities, new occupations, new cultural standards, new language, and new livelihoods. The political background and social conditions left behind in China, as met by the new social conditioning in America had interesting effects on the immigrants’ social consciousness and mentalities, creating a distinctly different generation of second generation Chinese-Americans.

The Influence Of Dorothea Lange On American Culture, Heather Heyman, Dr. Allen J. Christenson Oct 2013

The Influence Of Dorothea Lange On American Culture, Heather Heyman, Dr. Allen J. Christenson

Journal of Undergraduate Research

When America experienced the Great Depression during the 1930’s, a large number of people struggled to survive each day. Countless men and women were unemployed, and therefore, had no means of providing for their families. The migrant workers of the west were hit the hardest, and their former lives of simplicity became a serious fight for existence. At this same time, however, a portrait photographer in San Francisco, named Dorothea Lange, captured city conditions with her camera. Out of curiosity and boldness, Lange began to take pictures of citizens in San Francisco. These photographs documented the results of the chaotic …

Balancing Acquisition And Sorting Policies Of Remanufacturing, Taeuk Kang Oct 2013

Balancing Acquisition And Sorting Policies Of Remanufacturing, Taeuk Kang

Information Systems & Operations Management Dissertations - Archive

A remanufacturer struggles with uncertainty of returns and quality of products. With regard to the remanufacturing process, this study focuses on the determination of the following policies: a) Acquisition policy and b) Sorting policy. The purpose of this study is to find the optimality of both acquisition and sorting which, to meet demand with the maximization of profits over time, may need to be changed. More specific research questions are as follows: a) How much product returns should be obtained to meet demand through remanufacturing?, b) What level of sorting discrimination should be used for disassembly to meet demand at …
