I Am Aids: Bridging The Gap, Leah Marie Brewster Jan 2013

I Am Aids: Bridging The Gap, Leah Marie Brewster

Nursing

It is estimated that between 252,000 and 312,000 people in the United States are unaware that they are infected with HIV/AIDS and are unaware of their risk for HIV/AIDS transmission to other people (Morbidity and Mortality Weekly, 2003). Placed near the bottom in incidence for HIV/AIDS prevalence rates in the United States, North Dakota has 227 HIV/AIDS (North Dakota Department of Health, 2011). With low prevalence rates, a lack of cohesive healthcare provider groups is a challenge due to low demands for care. The purpose of this project was to identify the needs of persons newly diagnosed with HIV/AIDS and …

Cultural Awareness And Provider Based Care For Refugee Women, Andrea Jean Middlestead

Nursing

This disquisitional aimed to improve the cultural education of nurse practitioner's (NP's) related to female refugee populations. The ultimate goal was to improve health care outcomes and decrease disparities for refugee women by focusing on increasing cultural understanding, enhancing education, and providing a framework which NP's can utilize in daily practice. An online educational module was created and offered on the American Association of Nurse Practitioners Continuing Education website. Traditional cultural health care practices for the top 10 refugee populations in the United States in 2011 were compiled, compared with current cultural competence and awareness of primary care providers and …

Medical Respite Care For Fargo-Moorhead Homeless Population: A Needs Assessment, Alicia Joy Hauff Jan 2013

Medical Respite Care For Fargo-Moorhead Homeless Population: A Needs Assessment, Alicia Joy Hauff

Nursing

Homelessness continues to increase in the Fargo-Moorhead community, and little is known about the health needs of its chronically homeless population. An informal needs assessment completed in 2010 gathered feedback from several key informants with experience working with the homeless population. Informants cited a variety of unmet health needs and barriers to access of appropriate health care services, and the priority need voiced was for a medical respite program. The purpose of this project was to conduct a formal health needs assessment of the Fargo-Moorhead homeless population to describe and document health needs from consumers' and service providers' perspectives, assess …

Essays On The Effects Of Womens Rights On Female Brain Drain., Maryam Naghsh Nejad Jan 2013

Essays On The Effects Of Womens Rights On Female Brain Drain., Maryam Naghsh Nejad

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation investigates the effects of gender discrimination, proxied by a women's rights index, on the female high-skilled migration rates relative to that of male (the female brain drain ratio). First, by developing a model of migration choice I find non-linear effects of gender discrimination on the female brain drain ratio as a result of effects of gender discrimination on both costs and benefits of migration. At low levels of women's rights, increases in the index lead to increases in the female brain drain ratio. At very low levels of women's rights, it is often prohibitively costly for females to …

War Crimes, Wristbands, And Web 2.0: Exploring Online Justice Advocacy, Colonialism And ‘Civilizing Missions’ Through Kony2012, Sarah Steele, Tyler Shores, Yvette Pollastrini

Journal of Hate Studies

On March 5, 2012, the advocacy organization Invisible Children released a short 30-minute film entitled Kony2012, on YouTube.com. Within days, the video had gone viral, gaining a mass global viewership. By December 2012, the video had received over 94 million views worldwide, attaining the unofficial status as “the most viral video of all time.” While Kony2012 raised awareness about the urgency of the manhunt for Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) leader Joseph Kony and his exploitation of child soldiers in Uganda, the film generated much controversy. Commentators, both from within Uganda and beyond, raised serious questions about the oversimplified Colonial-style intervention …

Chopped, Dropped & Rolled., Michael F. Loop Jan 2013

Chopped, Dropped & Rolled., Michael F. Loop

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This thesis, in support of my exhibition, encompasses two of my passions; art and automobiles. In conjunction with my background in automotive restoration and backyard tinkering, I transform industrial materials, inherent to working on vehicles, (Bondo, automotive paint, hand-formed steel) into processes for art making. The pieces in this exhibition serve as an investigation into the process of making, while also paying homage to the canon of Modern and Postmodern art theories and practices, specifically Minimalism, Color Field painting, and Abstract Expressionism.

Screening And Brief Interventions For Alcohol Use In College Students, Angela Ann Dolalie Kelsch Jan 2013

Screening And Brief Interventions For Alcohol Use In College Students, Angela Ann Dolalie Kelsch

Nursing

College students are recognized as a high-risk group for alcohol problems in the United States. Annually approximately 500,000 college students are unintentionally injured, and more than 1,700 college students die from alcohol-related unintentional injury. In addition, individuals who begin drinking alcohol early in life increase their risk of developing serious alcohol problems later in life. As a result, it is essential that efforts be made to focus on opportunities for alcohol screening and brief intervention where applicable in an attempt to reduce problem drinking behaviors. Alcohol screening and brief interventions for alcohol misuse is an effective way for health care …

End-Of-Life Issues For Native American And Alaska Natives: A Critical Literature Review, Jodi Lynn Terpestra Jan 2013

End-Of-Life Issues For Native American And Alaska Natives: A Critical Literature Review, Jodi Lynn Terpestra

Nursing

This paper conducts a critical literature review on end of life issues relating to Native Americans and Alaska Natives. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) framework was used to guide this literature review. In particular, a PRISMA flow diagram which outlines the various steps of the critical literature review is given. The review identified 18 papers. Although all of these papers fit the inclusion criteria, there was very little uniformity among them. Six common themes emerged; namely, communications, program development, spirituality, rituals, advance planning, and guidelines. A detailed discussion of these six themes along with nursing …

Skin Cancer Prevention In North Dakota Farmers And Ranchers, Kathryn Marie Stensgard Jan 2013

Skin Cancer Prevention In North Dakota Farmers And Ranchers, Kathryn Marie Stensgard

Nursing

It is widely known that skin cancer is a significant health concern. Studies show that farmers and ranchers are at increased risk of skin cancer, presumed to be secondary to the increased time they spend outdoors and their increased exposure to the sun. This study examined the current sun protection techniques utilized by a sample of North Dakota individuals, who spend the majority of their occupational time outdoors. After collecting information reflecting demographics and current sun protection measures practiced by the sample, educational material focusing on skin cancer prevention and healthy sun behaviors was distributed to the individuals and the …

Assessing North Dakota Nurse Practitioners' Knowledge Of The National Comprehensive Cancer Network's Treatment Guidelines For Adult Cancer Pain, Lisa Maire Schoenberg

Nursing

The purpose of this project was to determine if access to the National Comprehensive Cancer Network's guidelines on the treatment of adult cancer related pain increased nurse practitioner knowledge and utilization in practice. The guidelines were provided to nurse practitioners who practiced within an oncology setting in North Dakota to assess whether their knowledge of pain management increased and if they found the guidelines to be a useful tool to have in practice. A pre-intervention questionnaire was sent to the participants to gain demographic information, including, age and gender, type of certification, primary area of practice, number of years practicing …

Illuminating Teaching And Learning: Students' Metacognition And Teacher Responsiveness In One College Developmental Reading Class, Tasha A. Vice Jan 2013

Illuminating Teaching And Learning: Students' Metacognition And Teacher Responsiveness In One College Developmental Reading Class, Tasha A. Vice

Reading Faculty Publications (Archived)

College students enrolled in a developmental reading program often do not perceive themselves as remedial readers, have low self-esteem about their abilities, or have a limited understanding about reading and therefore are unable to engage themselves with effective reading strategies. The challenge for educators in developmental college reading is to engage and motivate students with educational methods that create an awareness and understanding of reading by using strategies and practices appropriate for students’ diverse educational needs also necessary for their reading achievement. At the same time students need to develop the metacognitive awareness of their own knowledge of and use …

Context Processing And Aging Older Adults' Ability To Learn And Utilize Visual Contexts, Nora Denise Gayzur Jan 2013

Context Processing And Aging Older Adults' Ability To Learn And Utilize Visual Contexts, Nora Denise Gayzur

Psychology

The purpose of the present study was to examine how older adults utilize contextual information to guide attention in visual scenes. Studies that have examined context and attentional deployment have used the contextual cueing task. Contextual cueing reflects faster responses to repeated spatial configurations (consistent context-target covaration) than random spatial configurations (inconsistent covariation). Research has shown mixed results in older adults' ability to utilize context with this task. Young (18-23 years) and older (60-85 years) adults were tested in two contextual cuing experiments to assess age differences in how individuals utilize context in novel and real-world visual scenes. Experiment 1 …

Intuitive Risk Aversion And Reflective Risk Taking In Gain-Framed Economic Games, Tianwei Liu Jan 2013

Intuitive Risk Aversion And Reflective Risk Taking In Gain-Framed Economic Games, Tianwei Liu

Psychology

We typically think of risk taking as impulsive, but evolutionary pressure may actually favor playing it safe as a default strategy. In the context of dual-process theory of reasoning (Evans, 2003), we hypothesized that risk aversion is intuitive for an average decision maker and reflective thinking serves to reduce this intuition. This idea was tested in two studies using economic decision-making tasks. Information processing style was manipulated by forcing fast or slow decisions (Study 1) and by picture priming (Study 2). These manipulations did not affect decisions. We also measured participants' cognitive reflection ability as an individual difference variable in …

Filipino Amerasians: Gauging Stigmatization, Intolerance And Hatemongering In A Pluralistic Asia Pacific Society, Peter C. Kutschera, Marie A. Caputi

Journal of Hate Studies

Empirical and evidence-based researchers have neglected stigmatization, bias, name-calling, intolerance and even hatemongering experienced by military Filipino Amerasians and other biracial Pan Amerasian progeny who were abandoned abroad by their U.S. servicemen fathers. This condi- tion persists in the Philippines and has been reliably documented in other East and Southeast Asian nation-states, such as Japan, South Korea, and Vietnam. A relatively recent multiple-case study investigating psychosocial risk and mental health among Amerasians in Angeles, Pampanga, site of the former Clark Air Base, substantiated long-reported anecdotal claims that Anglo (White) and particularly African (Black) Amerasians were targets of victimization and traumatized …
