Physicians, Patients, And Facebook: Could You? Would You? Should You?, Joy Peluchette, Katherine Karl, Alberto Coustasse Nov 2013

Physicians, Patients, And Facebook: Could You? Would You? Should You?, Joy Peluchette, Katherine Karl, Alberto Coustasse

Management Faculty Research

This paper investigates the opinions of physicians and patients regarding the use of Facebook to communicate with one another about health-related issues. We analyzed 290 comments posted on online discussion boards and found that most (51.7%) were opposed to physicians being Facebook “friends” with patients and many (42%) were opposed to physicians having any kind of Facebook presence. The primary reasons for this opposition were concerns about privacy and the need to maintain professional boundaries in the physician-patient relationship. Others expressed concerns about HIPAA violations. Some believed it was acceptable for physicians to use Facebook as long as they were …

An Incremental Trace-Based Debug System For Field-Programmable Gate-Arrays, Jared Matthew Keeley Nov 2013

An Incremental Trace-Based Debug System For Field-Programmable Gate-Arrays, Jared Matthew Keeley

Theses and Dissertations

Modern society increasingly relies upon integrated circuits (ICs). It can be very costly if ICs do not function properly, and large portions of designer effort are spent on their verification. The use of field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) for verification and debug of ICs is increasing. FPGAs are faster than simulation and cost less than fabricating an ASIC prototype. However, the major challenge of using FPGAs for verification and debug is observability. Designers must use special techniques to observe the values of FPGA's internal signals. This thesis proposes a new method for increasing the observability of FPGAs and demonstrates its feasibility. …

Broken News: Market Segmentation And Selective Exposure In Online News, Deidra Lee Nov 2013

Broken News: Market Segmentation And Selective Exposure In Online News, Deidra Lee

Theses and Dissertations

Research has revealed that more Americans than ever are turning to the World Wide Web as their primary source for news and information instead of legacy media outlets such as printed newspapers and magazines and broadcast news. As more and more people rely on the Internet as a primary source for news, it is important to analyze the characteristics and content of online news to expose and correct problems associated with the practices that inform its production and presentation. There are several longstanding practices in the American journalistic tradition that have been adapted to the online news environment. The practices …

Fpga Fault Tolerant Arithmetic Logic: A Case Study Using Parallel-Prefix Adders, David H.K. Hoe, Deepthi Bollepalli, Chris D. Martinez Nov 2013

Fpga Fault Tolerant Arithmetic Logic: A Case Study Using Parallel-Prefix Adders, David H.K. Hoe, Deepthi Bollepalli, Chris D. Martinez

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper examines fault tolerant adder designs implemented on FPGAs which are inspired by the methods of modular redundancy, roving, and gradual degradation. A parallel-prefix adder based upon the Kogge-Stone configuration is compared with the simple ripple carry adder (RCA) design. The Kogge-Stone design utilizes a sparse carry tree complemented by several smaller RCAs. Additional RCAs are inserted into the design to allow fault tolerance to be achieved using the established methods of roving and gradual degradation. A triple modular redundant ripple carry adder (TMR-RCA) is used as a point of reference. Simulation and experimental measurements on a Xilinx Spartan …

Factors Affecting Student Satisfaction In Different Learning Deliveries, Kuang-Yu Chang Nov 2013

Factors Affecting Student Satisfaction In Different Learning Deliveries, Kuang-Yu Chang

Theses and Dissertations

This study addressed the relationship between student satisfaction and four interaction variables--student-content, student-instructor, student-student, and student-technology--in online, blended, and traditional learning settings. Demographics, previous experience with the Internet, and discussion-board applications were also investigated.

There were 916 respondents, including 185 in online settings, 90 in blended settings, and 641 in traditional settings, to Strachota's (2002) Online Satisfaction Survey. Participants took the survey either in an on-site classroom (traditional learning) or through e-mail, website link, or the Blackboard course management system (online setting). Participants in the blended setting could choose between completing the survey on-site or online, but were asked to …

The Economic Footprint Of The Rosen College Of Hospitality Management In The Metro Orlando Area, Robertico R. Croes, Tadayuki Hara

Dick Pope Sr. Institute Publications

The report documents the economic value of the Rosen College of Hospitality Management (RCHM) to the Metro Orlando area. The purpose of estimating the economic value of the program is to calculate the increased economic activities in the Metro Orlando area as generated by college degree attainment through the RCHM. The report is the result of an assignment commissioned by the Dean of the RCHM. The report assessed the economic impact of the alumni of the College during the period from 2000 to 2012. In that period, more than 5,000 students earned a degree either at the undergraduate or graduate …

Communication And Common Interest, Peter Godfrey-Smith, Manolo Martínez Nov 2013

Communication And Common Interest, Peter Godfrey-Smith, Manolo Martínez

Publications and Research

Explaining the maintenance of communicative behavior in the face of incentives to deceive, conceal information, or exaggerate is an important problem in behavioral biology. When the interests of agents diverge, some form of signal cost is often seen as essential to maintaining honesty. Here, novel computational methods are used to investigate the role of common interest between the sender and receiver of messages in maintaining cost-free informative signaling in a signaling game. Two measures of common interest are defined. These quantify the divergence between sender and receiver in their preference orderings over acts the receiver might perform in each state …

The Anchor, Volume 127.09: November 06, 2013, Hope College

The Anchor: 2013

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.
