A Study Of The Effectiveness Of Learning Communities At A Small Liberal Arts College, Paul Watkins

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The purpose of this study is to determine the effectiveness of the learning community program at a small liberal arts college on educational outcomes as measured by differences in semester GPA between learning community participants and non-participants, as well as differences between types of learning communities, time of participation in learning communities, and the effect of demographic variables and prior attainment (converted SAT scores). Data was provided by a small liberal arts college on 294 participants. The sample was composed of 152 students who participated in a learning community and 142 who did not participate in a learning community for …

Potential Synergy: Rural School Districts And International Student Programs, Hope G. Casto, Alexandra Steinhauer, Pamela M. Pollock Nov 2013

Potential Synergy: Rural School Districts And International Student Programs, Hope G. Casto, Alexandra Steinhauer, Pamela M. Pollock

The Rural Educator

Many rural school districts face declining enrollments. A few districts have taken the unusual path of recruiting international students in order to boost their enrollments. This study examines a community using this strategy and the resulting financial, academic, and social situations for the school, community, and students, both local and international. The program has two goals: to increase both enrollment and diversity in the school. The benefits and challenges are discussed in light of the social and academic spheres of the school experience. The future of the program is considered, especially in connection to community fears of school closure or …

Common Challenges Faced By Rural Principals: A Review Of The Literature, Jane P. Preston, Brittany A. E. Jakubiec, Robin Kooymans Nov 2013

Common Challenges Faced By Rural Principals: A Review Of The Literature, Jane P. Preston, Brittany A. E. Jakubiec, Robin Kooymans

The Rural Educator

Within this article, we thematically present common challenges associated with the role of the rural principal. In this literature review, we delimit our search to work published from 2003–2013. A limitation of this study is that it represents data predominantly from American, Canadian, and Australian rural settings, restricting a global applicability of results. Findings highlight that many rural principal candidates face a hiring disadvantage if they do not have a historical connection with the community advertising a position. Additional challenges include juggling diverse responsibilities, lack of professional development and resources, gender discrimination, and issues surrounding school accountability and change. This …

The Role Of School Leaders In Teacher Leadership Development, Marjorie C. Ringler, Debra O'Neal, Jana Rawls, Sheila Cumiskey Nov 2013

The Role Of School Leaders In Teacher Leadership Development, Marjorie C. Ringler, Debra O'Neal, Jana Rawls, Sheila Cumiskey

The Rural Educator

In rural eastern North Carolina, the rapid growth of English Learners (ELs) unintentionally makes mainstream classrooms sheltered instruction classrooms. Sheltered instruction is content-based instruction (CBI) where ELs acquire language while learning content. In addition to ELs, this region has a high number of Standard English Learners (SELs). SELs are native English speakers whose dialects are nonstandard and whose home languages differ structurally from academic English. A yearlong professional development used sheltered instruction to focus on academic language proficiency. A local university, two principals and 14 teachers partnered and participated in this weekly professional development. Data were analyzed using Guskey’s (2000) …

Unintended Consequences Of Cigarette Taxation And Regulation, Angela Hawken, Jonathan D. Kulick, James Prieger Nov 2013

Unintended Consequences Of Cigarette Taxation And Regulation, Angela Hawken, Jonathan D. Kulick, James Prieger

School of Public Policy Working Papers

Tobacco smoking harms health. Taxes and regulations can reduce that harm. But evasion reduces the efficacy of taxes and regulations and creates harms of its own in the form of illicit markets. Enforcement can reduce evasion but creates additional harms, including incarceration and violence. Peter Reu-ter has pointed out that a flat ban on cigarettes would be likely to generate illicit-market harms similar to the harms of existing illicit drug markets. Taxes and regulations can be thought of as “lesser prohibitions,” subject to the same sorts of risks. Minimizing total harm means minimizing the sum of abuse harms and control …

The Primacy Of Context: An Exploration Into The Causes Of Food Insecurity In Kitere, Kenya., William O. Aludo Nov 2013

The Primacy Of Context: An Exploration Into The Causes Of Food Insecurity In Kitere, Kenya., William O. Aludo

Capstone Collection

The purpose of this study was to explore the specific reasons why households in Kitere village, Kenya experience persistent food insecurity every year while the region enjoys the advantage of two planting/harvest seasons in a year. Kitere village lies within the lakeside region of Nyanza Province in Kenya, generally considered to be one of the more agriculturally productive parts of the country. The Participatory Rural Appraisal method was employed to gather qualitative data on the causes of food insecurity in Kitere village. The data sources were focus groups and a self-administered, one-time survey of random and non-random samples of key …

A Balanced Literacy Approach To The Classroom, Kayleigh M. Siaulys Mrs. Nov 2013

A Balanced Literacy Approach To The Classroom, Kayleigh M. Siaulys Mrs.

Senior Honors Theses

In recent years, educators and researchers have become conflicted and outwardly concerned over low language arts test scores. Students from various backgrounds with different learning styles are not reaching literacy and language arts goals of the 21st century. To fix this present conflict, a new system has been formulated, officially known as the balanced literacy approach. This system incorporates all necessary elements to learn the English language appropriately by combining two or more approaches into the curriculum. Using these various approaches collectively, students will have the opportunity to learn the structure of the English language and will receive instruction …
