Skateboarding As Transportation: Findings From An Exploratory Study, Tessa Walker Nov 2013

Skateboarding As Transportation: Findings From An Exploratory Study, Tessa Walker

Dissertations and Theses

In recent decades skateboarding has expanded from recreation into a form of transportation. Skateboarders appear to use roadways much as other non‐motorized modes do. However, there is little academic research on the needs and characteristics of the skateboard as a mode. This research reports demographics, multi‐modal and travel behavior findings, and other data from an exploratory mixed‐methods study of skateboarding as a mode of transportation.

Science Journals In The Garden: Developing The Skill Of Observation In Elementary Age Students, Karinsa Michelle Kelly Nov 2013

Science Journals In The Garden: Developing The Skill Of Observation In Elementary Age Students, Karinsa Michelle Kelly

Dissertations and Theses

The ability to make and record scientific observations is critical in order for students to engage in successful inquiry, and provides a sturdy foundation for children to develop higher order cognitive processes. Nevertheless, observation is taken for granted in the elementary classroom. This study explores how linking school garden experience with the use of science journals can support this skill. Students participated in a month-long unit in which they practiced their observation skills in the garden and recorded those observations in a science journal. Students' observational skills were assessed using pre- and post-assessments, student journals, and student interviews using three …

Quantifying Reproducibility In Computational Biology: The Case Of The Tuberculosis Drugome, Daniel Garijo, Sarah Kinnings, Li Xie, Lei Xie, Yinliang Zhang, Philip E. Bourne, Yolanda Gil Nov 2013

Quantifying Reproducibility In Computational Biology: The Case Of The Tuberculosis Drugome, Daniel Garijo, Sarah Kinnings, Li Xie, Lei Xie, Yinliang Zhang, Philip E. Bourne, Yolanda Gil

Publications and Research

How easy is it to reproduce the results found in a typical computational biology paper? Either through experience or intuition the reader will already know that the answer is with difficulty or not at all. In this paper we attempt to quantify this difficulty by reproducing a previously published paper for different classes of users (ranging from users with little expertise to domain experts) and suggest ways in which the situation might be improved. Quantification is achieved by estimating the time required to reproduce each of the steps in the method described in the original paper and make them part …

The Promise: A Mythic-Archetypal And Gender-Oriented Analysis Of J.D. Salinger's "A Perfect Day For Bananafish", Warren Spratley Nov 2013

The Promise: A Mythic-Archetypal And Gender-Oriented Analysis Of J.D. Salinger's "A Perfect Day For Bananafish", Warren Spratley

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is an analysis of J.D. Salinger’s “A Perfect Day for Bananafish” from both mythic-archetypal and gender-oriented perspectives. It looks specifically at the way a gender-oriented reading allows one to interpret “Bananafish” as a radical reassessment of Carl Jung’s ideas about the process of individuation, as well as Joseph Campbell’s conception of what he describes as the monomyth in his The Hero with a Thousand Faces. The reader is asked to look at how patriarchal values have greatly limited the development of these characters’ identities over time, and the complex archetypal and mythic implications of this limitation.

Red Grooms: The Forgotten Existentialist Ruckus Manhattan And The Influence Of Sartrian Existentialism, John E. Curley Iv Nov 2013

Red Grooms: The Forgotten Existentialist Ruckus Manhattan And The Influence Of Sartrian Existentialism, John E. Curley Iv

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This thesis focuses on the influence of the writings of Jean-Paul Sartre on the American artist Red Grooms. An analysis of Grooms's "sculpto-pictorama" Ruckus Manhattan as an installation demonstrates the influences of Sartrian existential concepts and acts as an arena in which viewers can discover these existential ethos in a culturally specific setting. Red Grooms's background as an American artist working in New York in the mid-twentieth centuryand his interest in French art and philosophy document further the influence of existentialism on Grooms. A thorough discussion of tableaux from Ruckus Manhattan, which visually represent Sartiran existential concepts, reveals Grooms to …

Everything In Moderation: A Quality Improvement Initiative, Rowena H. Scott, Bev Ewens, Lesley Andrew

eCULTURE

This discussion paper describes the review and development of a standardised moderation of assessment process in the School of Nursing and Midwifery. This initiative was the result of collaboration between two nursing course coordinators and a Centre for Learning and Development academic who provided the scholarship of moderation of assessments. A review of the current moderation processes revealed the potential for variation amongst markers especially due to the large number of new and sessional academic staff. A recommendation from the review was the need for a moderation process that provides evidence for reporting and is not difficult for academic staff …

Contrast Adaptation In The Lateral Eye Of Limulus Polyphemus, Tchoudomira Valtcheva Nov 2013

Contrast Adaptation In The Lateral Eye Of Limulus Polyphemus, Tchoudomira Valtcheva

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Luminance and contrast adaptation are neuronal mechanisms that the retina applies for continuous adjustment to light sensitivity though a collection of cellular and synaptic mechanisms distributed across the retinal network, thus accommodating the wide input range of the visual system within the constricted output range of retinal ganglion cells. Luminance mean adaptation has been demonstrated in the output neurons of the invertebrate eye (eccentric cells), and the aim of the study was to investigate whether the homology in visual processing extends to luminance variance (contrast) adaptation as well. The spike trains of individual eccentric cells were recorded from live horseshoe …

Timely Doctoral Completion Rates In Five Fields: A Two-Part Study, Angela Miller Nov 2013

Timely Doctoral Completion Rates In Five Fields: A Two-Part Study, Angela Miller

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Roughly half of all doctoral students who begin a program do not continue through graduation, and many of them face significant financial losses and emotional burdens as a result. Although this completion rate has stayed fairly constant for the past few decades, it has recently gained attention on a national level. In 2011, the National Research Council published the Assessment of Research Doctorate Programs in the United States, and provided a wealth of data on over 5,000 programs in 212 universities. This study used that dataset to examine the relationship between timely doctoral completion rates and 22 Program, Faculty and …

A Study On The Depiction Of Drug Usage, Alcohol Consumption And Cigarette Smoking In Movies And Its Perceived Effect On A Young Audience. A Comparative Study Of American And Indian Cinema And Their Respective Audiences., Zain Farook Merchant

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study analyzes the depiction of drug usage, cigarette smoking and alcohol consumption in

movies in terms of character stereotyping and typecasting. Because movies are focused on making money they are being used as marketing tools by alcohol and cigarette conglomerates (Grube, 2004). The study also explores youth perception of such content and tries to determine the behavioral implications or influence of such content on young children. The goal of this research is to analyze the social cognitive influence of movies on the youth and the effects of censorship in movies today. The research compares this effect in the two …

Skeletal Muscle Contraction Simulation: A Comparison In Modeling, Jonathan M. Ford

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Computer generated three-dimensional (3-D) models are being used at increasing rates in the fields of entertainment, education, research, and engineering. One of the aspects of interest includes the behavior and function of the musculoskeletal system. One such tool used by engineers is the finite element method (FEM) to simulate the physics behind muscle mechanics. There are several ways to represent 3-D muscle geometry, namely a bulk, a central line of action and a spline model. The purpose of this study is to exmine how these three representations affect the overall outcome of muscle movement. This is examined in a series …

The Best Interests Of The Child?: The Cultural Defense As Justification For Child Abuse, R. Lee Strasburger Jr. Nov 2013

The Best Interests Of The Child?: The Cultural Defense As Justification For Child Abuse, R. Lee Strasburger Jr.

Pace International Law Review

As the world continues to shrink and immigration increases across the globe, children are more frequently being raised under the influence of several cultures. As these cultures clash, children may be subject to child-rearing practices that are abusive in one culture and accepted in another, leaving state criminal court systems to sort out the aftermath. In these cases, the accused immigrant parents may be able to use the cultural defense to escape conviction or mitigate their sentences in the face of child abuse charges. This cultural defense has been successfully used in courts all over the world, including the United …

Guarding International Borders Against Hiv: A Comparative Study In Futility, Matthew J. Defazio Nov 2013

Guarding International Borders Against Hiv: A Comparative Study In Futility, Matthew J. Defazio

Pace International Law Review

Back in 1985, when knowledge of HIV began to spread, governments reacted by passing immigration laws to restrict the entry of HIV positive individuals. These laws required such individuals to either declare their HIV status or undergo mandatory HIV testing to secure entry. As justification for these initiatives, many countries claimed to be preserving the public health and their domestic economy. The United States, China, and Russia are three countries that have had, or still have, some form of HIV immigration restrictions. Initially, it may seem logical that preventing HIV positive individuals from entering a country will cut down on …

Asean Ip Harmonization: Striking The Delicate Balance, Elizabeth Siew-Kuan Ng Nov 2013

Asean Ip Harmonization: Striking The Delicate Balance, Elizabeth Siew-Kuan Ng

Pace International Law Review

As the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) continues its dynamic evolution towards establishing the ASEAN Community by 2015, one of its key areas of policy focus is to enhance its regional intellectual property (IP) framework and promote greater IP cooperation, so as to advance economic competitiveness and transform the region into a significant and competitive bloc in the international community.

While recognizing this desire for broader IP cooperation, ASEAN member states have traditionally guarded their sovereignty fervently and upheld diplomacy the ASEAN Way. The ASEAN Way emphasizes consensus and non-interference. Earlier attempts at IP harmonization faced numerous setbacks and …

Contract In My Soup: Chinese Contract Formation And Ritual Eating And Drunkenness, Mary Szto Nov 2013

Contract In My Soup: Chinese Contract Formation And Ritual Eating And Drunkenness, Mary Szto

Pace International Law Review

Scholars and practitioners alike recognize that contract formation in today's China requires more than an understanding of black letter law, but also knowledge of cultural practices. While there is much literature, however, about the legal unenforceability of contracts, the importance of guanxi (relationships), mianzi (face), and interpersonal harmony, there is little mention of eating and drinking rituals. Since time immemorial, ritual eating and drinking have legal meaning in China. These rituals often are the heart of building trust and negotiating terms in China. They are also the foundation for performance and enforcement. Often, however, these rituals involve drunkenness, which sometimes …

Thomas Jefferson And The Ideology Of Democratic Schooling, James Carpenter Nov 2013

Thomas Jefferson And The Ideology Of Democratic Schooling, James Carpenter

Democracy & Education

I challenge the traditional argument that Jefferson’s educational plans for Virginia were built on modern democratic understandings. While containing some democratic features, especially for the founding decades, Jefferson’s concern was narrowly political, designed to ensure the survival of the new republic. The significance of this piece is to add to the more accurate portrayal of Jefferson’s impact on American institutions.

Human Recombineering, Melvys Valledor Nov 2013

Human Recombineering, Melvys Valledor

Open Access Dissertations

Genome editing by homologous recombination (HR) is centrally important for functional genomics, making disease models, bioengineering and for gene therapy. Viral HR relies on a SynExo complex comprised of an exonuclease and a synaptase. Genome editing by the phage lambda synaptase Beta approaches HR rates of 10% in E. coli using ssDNA-mediated Recombineering but is much less efficient in mammalian cells. SynExos are common to dsDNA viruses that infect a variety of hosts and their mechanisms are conserved, suggesting that direct genome Recombineering can be extended beyond bacteria. Our hypothesis is that co-evolution of viral SynExo recombinases with host proteins …

Calcite Dissolution Under Turbulent Flow Conditions: A Remaining Conundrum., Matthew D. Covington Nov 2013

Calcite Dissolution Under Turbulent Flow Conditions: A Remaining Conundrum., Matthew D. Covington

KIP Articles

The aim of this article is to describe two-dimensional scallops (scallops guided inside ribs) found in a syphon, to compare them to the ordinary three-dimensional corrosion forms frequently found in karst systems (scallops and flutes). We also raise a certain number of questions regarding analogical and numerical modeling. The syphon is named “Combe du Creux” (department of the Doubs, France, EU). We have been exploring this flooded cave since 2003. Since 2015, we are studying its morphology and especially its scallops. When diving underwater underground (cave diving), observation work is more difficult. Therefore, photographs of the forms, of the tools …

Habitat Selection And Nesting Ecology Of Snowy Plover In The Great Basin, Kristen Sue Ellis Nov 2013

Habitat Selection And Nesting Ecology Of Snowy Plover In The Great Basin, Kristen Sue Ellis

Theses and Dissertations

Snowy plovers (Charadrius nivosus) are small, ground-nesting shorebirds that are a species of conservation concern throughout North America. Despite increased efforts to understand factors contributing to the decline of snowy plover, little is known about habitat selection and breeding ecology of snowy plover for the large population found in the Great Basin. We tested hypotheses concerning the occupancy and nesting success of snowy plover. First, we identified factors influencing snowy plover nest survival at Great Salt Lake, Utah. We hypothesized that snowy plover would demonstrate differences in nest survival rates across years due to differences in habitat characteristics, predator abundance, …
