European Comparative Literature As Humanism, Bernard Franco Dec 2013

European Comparative Literature As Humanism, Bernard Franco

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "European Comparative Literature as Humanism" Bernard Franco presents an epistemological reflection on comparative literature in the context of the evolution of the relationships between different forms of knowledge. Franco argues that in the late nineteenth century the notion of the "humanities" replaced that of the "human sciences," but that we have recently returned to a humanist concept of knowledge linked to ethics. Franco focuses on the origins of this critical reflection about the nature of knowledge and on the debate in the Romantic period between rational and non-rational forms of knowledge. The idéologues (Cabanis, Destutt de Tracy, …

Geomancing Dib's Transcultural Expression In Translation, Madeleine Campbell Dec 2013

Geomancing Dib's Transcultural Expression In Translation, Madeleine Campbell

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Geomancing Dib's Transcultural Expression in Translation" Madeleine Campbell analyses Mohammed Dib's treatment of symbols and mythologies from Judeo-Christian and Islamic traditions. Campbell contextualizes lexical, syntactic, and intertextual elements in Dib's texts with reference to Oriental schemas including the pre-Islamic Mu'allaqāt, The Conference of the Birds by Farīd ud-Dīn Attār and elements of Sufi symbolism. Further, Campbell examines how these elements serve to develop a liminal yet multilingual "reference system" within the framework of the French language. Dib's poetic aesthetic goes beyond surrealism in the intensity of its ontological enquiry and appears to go beyond Sufism in …

Literary Aspects In New Media Art Works, Narvika Bovcon Dec 2013

Literary Aspects In New Media Art Works, Narvika Bovcon

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Literary Aspects in New Media Art Works" Narvika Bovcon discusses examples of new media literature in the works of new media artists Jaka Železnikar and Srečo Dragan. While Železnikar is primarily a net artist who authors new media poetry and online linguistic interventions, the literary segments in Dragan's work are based in conceptual art and video art and he uses them to initiate a happening. Bovcon argues that studies of new media literature — of those works which require a readerly perception — should take time and attempt to capture the general flavor of such works which …

Artaud, Barney, And The Total Work Of Art From Avant-Garde To The Posthuman, Matteo Colombi, Massimo Fusillo

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In their article "Artaud, Barney, and the Total Work of Art from Avant-Garde to the Posthuman" Matteo Colombi and Massimo Fusillo discuss the aesthetics of Matthew Barney's video-performance art and the theater of Antonin Artaud. Colombi and Fusillo highlight the characteristics of the posthuman: the rejection of Western anthropocentrism and its subversion through hybridization with human, animal, and mechanical elements, the incorporation of Dionysian imagery of the body, and a commitment to the idea of the total work of art in its blending of different artistic mediums, and indeed, of art and life. Using examples from Artaud's writings on theater, …

Inflation In Enrichment Claims: Reflections On The Brazilian Civil Code, Aimite Jorge Dec 2013

Inflation In Enrichment Claims: Reflections On The Brazilian Civil Code, Aimite Jorge

Journal of Civil Law Studies

Inflation can be one of the risks assumed by the parties to a contract. Notwithstanding, contractual terms may provide for monetary corrections to offset that risk in cases of foreseeable inflation. The same may not hold true, however, for claims based on unjustified enrichment. They may find themselves in the position of innocents because the events that brought about the decline of purchasing power of the currency were unconnected to them. This paper analyses the approach recently favoured in the new Brazilian Civil Code on inflation in enrichment claims. Its focus is on article 884 (headed “enriquecimento sem justa causa”), …

Cultural Understanding In The Indonesian Translation Of The Baby-Sitters Club, Halida Aisyah Dec 2013

Cultural Understanding In The Indonesian Translation Of The Baby-Sitters Club, Halida Aisyah

Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya

This paper examines the original American edition and the Indonesian translation of two The Baby- Sitters Club novels. The researcher focuses on how culture-specific items in the novels are translated. Javier Aixelá’s classification is used to identify culture-specific items, and the translator’s method is analyzed using the notions of foreignization and domestication by Lawrence Venuti. It is found that foreignization is the translator’s tendency in translating the two novels, which indicates that the translated version of these children’s novels promote cultural understanding. This research also fills a gap in translation study as little research has been done to study the …

Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya

This article aims to analyze the representation of Latinas as maids by examining the first season of US television drama comedy, Devious Maids. The show has been a controversy inside and outside Latina community since it presents the lives of five Latinas working as maids in Beverly Hills that appears to reinforce the negative stereotypes of Latinas. However, a close reading on scenes by using character analysis on two Latina characters shows that the characters break stereotypes in various ways. The show gives visibility to the Latinas by putting them as main characters and portraying them as progressive and independent …

Producing Space: Block-By-Block Change In A Gentrifying Neighborhood, Jen Douglas Dec 2013

Producing Space: Block-By-Block Change In A Gentrifying Neighborhood, Jen Douglas

Graduate Doctoral Dissertations

Gentrification of urban neighborhoods is part of an ongoing restructuring of the city, linked to the emerging occupational structure of the service economy and the remaking of built environments that were created for a production economy. It is the name given to processes in which commodification and reinvestment accompany the in-migration of professional and managerial workers, often displacing prior residents and giving altered spatial form to inequality.

This dissertation is a case study of gentrification in Hyde and Jackson Squares, part of Boston's Jamaica Plain neighborhood. The emergence of gentrification pressures and their uneven distribution within the area is documented …

The Effects Of Hyaluronic Acid And Glucosamine On The Migration And Proliferation Of Tenocytes, Chien-Hung Chen, Jin-Fu Huang, Li-Lun Chen, Wen-Chung Tsai, Jong-Hwei S. Pang, Yu-Hsin Liao, Tung-Yang Yu

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Tendinopathy or tendon rupture is a common disease. Studies have showed that hyaluronic acid and glucosamine benefit the process of tendon repair. Tendon healing requires the migration of tenocytes to the repair site, followed by the proliferation and synthesis of the extracellular matrix. However, the effects of hyaluronic acid and glucosamine on tenocytes remain to be explored. Here, we treated tenocytes from rat Achilles tendons with hyaluronic acid or glucosamine. The ability of tenocytes to migrate and proliferate was assessed by transwell filter migration assay and MTT (3-[4,5-Dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5- diphenyltetrazolium bromide) assay, respectively. Results from transwell filter migration assays showed that …

Incidental Finding Of A Simple Dysraphic State Of A Closed Spinal Dysraphism And Tethered Cord In An Adult Patient With Low Back Pain: A Casereport, Lin-Chien Lee, Hung-Fu Lee, Fu-Kong Lieu Dec 2013

Incidental Finding Of A Simple Dysraphic State Of A Closed Spinal Dysraphism And Tethered Cord In An Adult Patient With Low Back Pain: A Casereport, Lin-Chien Lee, Hung-Fu Lee, Fu-Kong Lieu

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

The recognition of a closed spinal dysraphism without a subcutaneous mass and cutaneous stigmata depends on the development of relevant neurological and urological symptoms and signs. It can also be an incidental finding when symptoms that do not originate from it are investigated. We describe a 39-year-old man who presented with spondylolysis-related low back pain. Plain film showed posterior spina bifida of S1 and magnetic resonance imaging of the L-spine revealed one intradural lipoma at the L5 level and cord tethering. Conservative treatment was suggested because no relevant symptoms or signs of a mass effect of the lipoma or tethered …

An Optogenetic Gene Expression System With Rapid Activation And Deactivation Kinetics, Laura B. Motta-Mena, Anna Reade, Michael J. Mallory, Spencer Glantz, Orion D. Weiner, Kristen W. Lynch, Kevin H. Gardner

Publications and Research

Optogenetic gene expression systems can control transcription with spatial and temporal detail unequaled with traditional inducible promoter systems. However, current eukaryotic light-gated transcription systems are limited by toxicity, dynamic range, or slow activation/deactivation. Here we present an optogenetic gene expression system that addresses these shortcomings and demonstrate its broad utility. Our approach utilizes an engineered version of EL222, a bacterial Light-Oxygen-Voltage (LOV) protein that binds DNA when illuminated with blue light. The system has a large (>100-fold) dynamic range of protein expression, rapid activation (< 10 s) and deactivation kinetics (< 50 s), and a highly linear response to light. With this system, we achieve light-gated transcription in several mammalian cell lines and intact zebrafish embryos with minimal basal gene activation and toxicity. Our approach provides a powerful new tool for optogenetic control of gene expression in space and time.
