An Examination Of Localization Success Factors Of Chinese Big Four Accounting Firms, Alexa Mcisaac
An Examination Of Localization Success Factors Of Chinese Big Four Accounting Firms, Alexa Mcisaac
Honors Projects in Modern Languages
In May 2012, the Chinese government mandated that once the Big Four accounting (KPMG, PwC, Ernst & Young, and Deloitte) joint venture agreements expire, the firms must begin to localize most of the senior management. Although most of the Big Four firms employ many locals, there are more expatriate partners than Chinese counterparts. Because of this, the Big Four firms must quickly find qualified local senior management personnel. Amongst compliance and global regulatory issues, the Big Four firms must develop a strategy for localizing. Through a survey, this study aims to examine how expatriates and local Chinese managers perceive the …

ISBN 9789860235418 209 pages, bibliography, index) is a collection of articles about sociological and literary aspects of identity formation as a consequence of (im)migration. (Im)migration results in the problematics of assimilation and hybridity and in postcolonial scholarship, in particular, attention is paid to the concept of migration termed "Creolization" on the ground that cultural contact, cultural transmission, and cultural transformation result in the creation of new cultures. Southern Carnivalesque: Laughter And The Performance Of The Politics Of Race In Fiction, 1885-2010, Gina Renee Denton
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Using a range of nineteenth, twentieth, and twenty-first century texts to track the peculiar failures and ambiguous successes of white-authored black characters, the study defines southern carnivalesque's problematic relationship with forms of black laughter and popular media images. The project demarcates southern carnivalesque's development in relationship to cultural indices, and finds William Faulkner at the center of the aesthetic that creates so much controversy. Staging performances of blacknes that function between Mark Twain's and Ralph Ellison's, Faulkner shifts the paradigm of Southern humor, as Mardi Gras inspired his shift. Acrid laughter from Faulkner's black characters acts as a disruptive sound …

Cultural Differences In Movie Promotions On Social Network Sites: Evidence From China And The United States, Chen Liu
Open Access Theses
Two movies, The Hunger Games and Titanic 3D, received great box office success in the U.S. and China separately, owing to their promotion activities in respective SNSs. Considering these two countries belong to two different cultures, high/low-context cultures and reflect different cultural values, individualism/collectivism, the researcher proposed four hypotheses to test if cultural factors play an important role in SNS use including information seeking and giving behavior, imagery and text use, and the employment of emotional expressiveness. Textual analysis was used to study users posts in Twitter and Sina Weibo, corporate wall posts in Facebook and Renren. Results confirmed that …

Honors Projects
This study examines what behaviors undergraduate, heterosexual female Bowling Green State University students age 18-24 classify as “Intimate Partner Violence†and as “Intimate Partner Abuse.†This research begins to explore how this population defines these terms through looking at what types of behaviors are seen as violence and what types of behaviors are seen as abuse. Participants were randomly selected to take one of two online surveys. One survey asked participants to decide if listed behaviors were “Intimate Partner Violence†when committed by a male partner against a female partner. The other survey asked the same but replaced “Intimate Partner …

Symbolic Capital And The Performativity Of Authorship: The Construction And Commodification Of The Nineteenth-Century Authorial Celebrity, Whitney Helms
Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Victorian and Antebellum writers were the first literary figures to construct and perform their authorship within the sphere of celebrity. Unlike their Romantic predecessors who endured fame as an unexpected consequence of their popularity, the Victorians and their contemporaries understood celebrity as a condition of authorship. This dissertation takes as its subject the origins and development of symbolic power for authors as it was expressed in the trappings of celebrity and mass culture and argues that authorship became no longer strictly a profession of writing, but rather a performative endeavor that could be presented through diverse commercial markets. Investigating the …

American Romanticism And The Politics Of Literary Originality: The Dark Passages Of Emerson, Poe, Hawthorne, And Melville, Peter Brock Olson
American Romanticism And The Politics Of Literary Originality: The Dark Passages Of Emerson, Poe, Hawthorne, And Melville, Peter Brock Olson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Critics and commentators have recently reinitiated interest in Romanticism within the sphere of nineteenth-century American literature, and have sought to recuperate Romantic aesthetics to explore the implications of the American renaissance. The scholarship in Romantic theory has given impetus to a New Romanticism that synthesizes philosophy of literature--phenomenology and poststructuralism--with cultural and genre studies. This dissertation studies four canonic mid-nineteenth-century American authors--Emerson, Poe, Hawthorne, and Melville--through the nexus of Romantic negativity and originality, and takes a metacritical approach to a transatlantic critical field juxtaposing American Transcendentalism, British Romanticism, and German Idealism within the sphere of an antebellum cultural matrix composed …

"This Is Who I Am": Perspectives On Economics, Policy, And Personal Identity And Culture Of Cook Inlet And Kenai River Salmon Fisheries, Hannah L. Harrison
Indigenous Studies
Throughout this thesis, I use a multidisciplinary approach for understanding the sustainability of the culture, livelihoods, and ecosystems in the Cook Inlet and Kenai River salmon fisheries on Alaska's Kenai Peninsula. In Chapter 1, I present a broad overview of the Cook Inlet region, its inhabitants, and the various stakeholder and user groups that access regional salmon fisheries. Chapter 1 also provides an overview of the methodology utilized in this research, as well as discuss the methods, the strengths, and weaknesses of the research as part of an evaluation of the study. In Chapter 2, I present an overview of …

Attitudes Toward Science (Ats): An Examination Of Scientists' And Native Americans' Cultural Values And Ats And Their Effect On Action Priorities, Adam T. Murry
Dissertations and Theses
Science has been identified as a crucial element in the competitiveness and sustainability of America in the global economy. American citizens, especially minority populations, however, are not pursuing science education or careers. Past research has implicated `attitudes toward science' as an important factor in the public's participation in science. I applied Ajzen's (1991) Theory of Planned Behavior to attitudes toward science to predict science-related sustainability-action intentions and evaluated whether scientists and Native Americans differed in their general attitudes toward science, cultural values, and specific beliefs about science. Analyses revealed that positive attitude toward science and the cultural value of individualism …
The Scandinavian Immigrant Experience In Utah, 1850--1920: Using Material Culture To Interpret Cultural Adaptation, Rachel Gianni Abbott
The Scandinavian Immigrant Experience In Utah, 1850--1920: Using Material Culture To Interpret Cultural Adaptation, Rachel Gianni Abbott
Arctic and Northern Studies
From 1850 to 1920, over 25,000 Scandinavians who had joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints emigrated to Utah to unite themselves with fellow Church members (Mormons) and build their Zion. These Scandinavian immigrants brought distinctive cultural heritages and traditions that contributed to the collective identity in Utah. The majority of literature on Scandinavian immigration to America and Scandinavian immigrants in America, however, neglects to consider the Mormon Scandinavian immigrants in the larger discourse. In addition, many historians of Utah history have concluded that Scandinavian immigrants assimilated culturally and left no trace of their Danish, Norwegian and Swedish …
The Art Of Perl: How A Scripting Language (Inter)Activated The World Wide Web, Norberto Gomez Jr.
The Art Of Perl: How A Scripting Language (Inter)Activated The World Wide Web, Norberto Gomez Jr.
Theses and Dissertations
In 1987, computer programmer and linguist Larry Wall authored the general-purpose, high-level, interpreted, dynamic Unix scripting language, Perl. Borrowing features from C and awk, Perl was originally intended as a scripting language for text-processing. However, with the rising popularity of the Internet and the advent of Tim Berners-Lee’s World Wide Web (Web), in the 1990s, Perl soon became the glue-language for the Internet, due in large part to its relationship to the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) and the Common Gateway Interface (CGI). Perl was the go-to language for on the fly program writing and coding, gaining accolades from the likes …

The Influence Of Diet On The Mammalian Gut Microbiome, Brian David Muegge
The Influence Of Diet On The Mammalian Gut Microbiome, Brian David Muegge
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
The mammalian gut is residence to a large microbial community whose collective set of millions of genes: microbiome) encodes a vast array of functions, including many that process dietary components. Few tools are available to change the microbiome's properties to promote host health because the factors governing community assembly and operation are poorly understood. My thesis focused on the impact of one factor, host diet.
I used a variety of experimental and computational methods to perform a comparative metagenomic study of the fecal communities of 39 diverse mammals to assess microbiome variation. These animals included herbivores, omnivores and carnivores representing …
Knowing Subjects: Cognitive Cultural Studies And Early Modern Spanish, Barbara Simerka
Knowing Subjects: Cognitive Cultural Studies And Early Modern Spanish, Barbara Simerka
Purdue Studies in Romance Literatures
In Knowing Subjects, Barbara Simerka uses an emergent field of literary study-cognitive cultural studies-to delineate new ways of looking at early modern Spanish literature and to analyze cognition and social identity in Spain at the time. Simerka analyzes works by Cervantes and Gracían, as well as picaresque novels and comedias. Employing an interdisciplinary approach, she brings together several strands of cognitive theory and details the synergies among neurological, anthropological, and psychological discoveries that provide new insights into human cognition. Her analysis draws on Theory of Mind, the cognitive activity that enables humans to predict what others will do, feel, …
