The Negotiation Of Discourses For Women Who Have Emigrated From India To The United States, Suzanne Christine Schmidle Jul 2013

The Negotiation Of Discourses For Women Who Have Emigrated From India To The United States, Suzanne Christine Schmidle

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

When an individual experiences a change in location and enters an unfamiliar space or place, there is often a period of adjustment that occurs due to differences in the two environments. Some of these differences may be immediately obvious to the individual upon their transition, however many times, the differences are not obvious to the eye or even to the mind. This is due to the role of discursive expectations, which are “taken for granted” truths that are engrained in and disciplined through discourses embedded in areas of society such as culture, ethnicity, and religion. Upon entering the new space …

Down's Syndrome, Neroinflammation, And Alzheimer Neuropathogenesis, Donna M. Wilcock, W. Sue T. Griffin Jul 2013

Down's Syndrome, Neroinflammation, And Alzheimer Neuropathogenesis, Donna M. Wilcock, W. Sue T. Griffin

Physiology Faculty Publications

Down syndrome (DS) is the result of triplication of chromosome 21 (trisomy 21) and is the prevailing cause of mental retardation. In addition to the mental deficiencies and physical anomalies noted at birth, triplication of chromosome 21 gene products results in the neuropathological and cognitive changes of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Mapping of the gene that encodes the precursor protein (APP) of the β-amyloid (Aβ) present in the Aβ plaques in both AD and DS to chromosome 21 was strong evidence that this chromosome 21 gene product was a principal neuropathogenic culprit in AD as well as DS. The discovery of …

Using Gis To Teach Placed-Based Mathematics In Rural Classrooms, Jacqueline Leonard, Nicole M. Russell, Robert M. Hobbs, Heather Buchanan Jul 2013

Using Gis To Teach Placed-Based Mathematics In Rural Classrooms, Jacqueline Leonard, Nicole M. Russell, Robert M. Hobbs, Heather Buchanan

The Rural Educator

The purpose of this article is to promote the use of GIS and place-based education (PBE) in rural mathematics classrooms. The pedagogy of place is disappearing from rural communities because of declining enrollments, lack of support, and federal mandates to focus more on basic academic skills. However, PBE does not stand in opposition to standards-based instruction and academic achievement; rather, it enhances instructional strategies for getting at these aims. We present examples of place that can be used to engage rural students in meaningful mathematics activities to improve their content knowledge and problem-solving ability. Barriers exist to full implementation of …

The Ethereal Promise: Progressive Ideology, Internationalism, And Propaganda In World War Ii Radio Drama, Steven Kostelecky Jul 2013

The Ethereal Promise: Progressive Ideology, Internationalism, And Propaganda In World War Ii Radio Drama, Steven Kostelecky

History ETDs

Radio drama in America between the years 1939 and 1945 both reflected the domestic life of its citizens and helped direct it. The United States government, independent organizations, broadcast networks, and individual producers deployed radio drama to promote the entry of the United States onto the world stage both by military intervention in World War II and as a democratic conciliator in shaping the postwar world. My thesis addresses the question of whether radio drama deployed as propaganda during World War II acted solely to reinforce an extant American ideology necessary for the conduct of the war or if it …

Relationships Among Retrospective Perceptions Of Parents And Current Perceptions Of Partner To Psychological Distress Of Middle-Age Adults, Leslie Rose Peterson Jul 2013

Relationships Among Retrospective Perceptions Of Parents And Current Perceptions Of Partner To Psychological Distress Of Middle-Age Adults, Leslie Rose Peterson

Individual, Family, and Community Education ETDs

This study was designed as a constructive replication of Wintre and Gates (2006) research which investigated the relationships between recalled parents' parenting styles and perceptions of reciprocity with their parents in adolescence, as well as current perceptions of spousal/partner reciprocity to their current psychological distress as middle-age adults. The operational definition of parenting styles for this research study is based on Baumrind's theory of childhood parenting styles, and the construct of parent-child reciprocity is derived from Youniss' theory of late adolescents' perceived reciprocity. The present study was based on the data individually collected from 100 adults 40-58 years of age …

Pedagogy Of Post 9/11 United States: Muslim American Students' Experiences, Teachers' Pedagogies, And Textbooks' Analysis, Randa Nabil Elbih Jul 2013

Pedagogy Of Post 9/11 United States: Muslim American Students' Experiences, Teachers' Pedagogies, And Textbooks' Analysis, Randa Nabil Elbih

Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs

The events and aftermath of 9/11 continue to cause life changes for many Americans, particularly Muslim American students who have experienced socio-cultural and pedagogic exclusion, harassment and discrimination due to ignorance and misunderstandings. Teachers must inform their students about 9/11 and the War on Terror to eliminate misunderstandings and intolerance towards a vulnerable population. In spite of its importance, many schools have not implemented the topic as part of their curricula. It is not even included as part of social studies state standards. Recent editions of US history textbooks include some information about 9/11 and the War on Terror that …

Imagining "The Town Too Tough To Die": Tourism, Preservation, And History In Tombstone, Arizona, Kara L. Mccormack

American Studies ETDs

This dissertation looks at the ways popular culture, preservation, and economic exigencies continually circulate and interact in Tombstone, Arizona the ways tourists make meaning from the site the importance of the concepts of history and authenticity and the resonance of the Earp Myth and the Mythic West worldwide. Tombstone's place within that myth cannot be understated, as it has come to signify for many the ideas wrapped up in the myth as a whole. On a more basic level, Tombstone fits within wider trends in historic preservation and heritage sites that are central to an analysis of the power and …

The Southeast Michigan Stewardship Coalition: A Deep Design Of Eco-Democratic Reform That Is Situational, Local, And In Support Of Living Systems, John J. Lupinacci Jul 2013

The Southeast Michigan Stewardship Coalition: A Deep Design Of Eco-Democratic Reform That Is Situational, Local, And In Support Of Living Systems, John J. Lupinacci

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Education can have a tremendous impact on how we, as humans, understand and relate to each other and the larger environmental systems to which we belong. In efforts to address the role of education in alleviating and eliminating social suffering and environmental degradation in many of the worlds’ diverse communities, the purpose of this critical ethnographic case study is to qualitatively examine the design of an intermediary organization within the context of eco-democratic reform.
The study involved observation, interviewing, and analysis that included personal narrative accounts from 12 key members in the organization and their thick descriptions of the design …

Battle Of The Bains: Tactical Bathing In Two Expository Texts, One Film And A Novella, Leann Marie Lewis Jul 2013

Battle Of The Bains: Tactical Bathing In Two Expository Texts, One Film And A Novella, Leann Marie Lewis

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

In numerous articles and texts published within the arenas of Comparative Literature and Cultural Studies, much has been written on the trope of the shared bath-and even more specifically the hammam-as a space of orientalism. Although researchers such as Magreban sociologist Fatima Mernissi, Algerian writer Malek Alloula, and film scholars Serena Anderlini-DOnofrio and Elisabetta Girelli have offered images of le bain turc in expository texts, art and media, and films as those which offer 'Turkish Dreams' of orientalist fantasy, this paper focuses on the space as a loci of performative strategies and tactical moves, which abet social resistance. I argue …

Embracing Evil: The Threat And Allure Of The Female In Greek Poetry, Caley S. Mcguill Jul 2013

Embracing Evil: The Threat And Allure Of The Female In Greek Poetry, Caley S. Mcguill

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

Modern scholars have often noted the harsh depictions of women in Greek literature and account for them as simply part of the tradition of Greek misogyny' that exists throughout ancient Greek texts from the archaic period to classical times. This project argues that these sentiments, which have so often been described as 'Greek misogyny' in literature, in fact embody a more complicated and nuanced concept. My objective in this project is to explore the ways in which select 'misogynistic' Greek texts express what I call 'gyno-anxiety': the fear that arises from male vulnerability to and dependence upon women, who represent …

From Tutor-Led To Student-Led Design Education: The Global Studio, Aysar Ghassan, Erik Bohemia Jul 2013

From Tutor-Led To Student-Led Design Education: The Global Studio, Aysar Ghassan, Erik Bohemia

Learn X Design Conference Series

“Tutor-led” design education has been argued to be a system where lecturers are at the centre of teaching & learning activities and where educators’ tastes strongly influence students’ outcomes. Design education has also been argued not to prepare graduates for working in highly complex professional capacities synonymous with the contemporary era. We argue the role of tutors in tutor-led design education to be a factor in this. The Global Studio runs Web 2.0 enabled industry sponsored international collaborations between students. One aim is to introduce learners to “complex project situations” and consequently to prepare them for contemporary working life. It …

Developing Expertise And Connoisseurship Through Handling Objects Of ‘Good Design’: The Example Of The I.L.E.A./Camberwell Collection, Maria Georgaki Jul 2013

Developing Expertise And Connoisseurship Through Handling Objects Of ‘Good Design’: The Example Of The I.L.E.A./Camberwell Collection, Maria Georgaki

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series

The paper develops from the study case of the I.L.E.A./Camberwell Collection. The I.L.E.A./Camberwell Collection comprises about 20,000 design and craft objects chosen by the London County Council and the Inner London Education Authority as examples of “good design”. It circulated in London schools between 1951 and 1976. The paper uses the Collection in order to discuss “handling” as a research methodology with particular relevance to expertise and connoisseurship in design history. It provides an overview of how expertise and connoisseurship diverge in their meaning and scope in the discipline of design history as compared to art history and adjacent disciplines, …

Design History, Connoisseurship And Sustainability: Object Lessons And Collecting As Learning Tools For Designers, Paul Denison Jul 2013

Design History, Connoisseurship And Sustainability: Object Lessons And Collecting As Learning Tools For Designers, Paul Denison

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series

The academic discipline of Design History is sometimes accused of having a connoisseurial approach, something which arguably fosters the creation of false hierarchies and subsequently leads design students and the design community to create products which are environmentally, socially and economically unsustainable. The first part of this paper takes the work of sustainable design theorist Tony Fry (2009) as a starting point by which to evaluate this proposition. Fry has been critical of design history, claiming that a focus on style and the icons of design to has resulted in a lack of student interest in the real issues of …

Global Creativity: Intercultural ‘Hands-On’ Workshops For Pre-Service Primary Art Teachers, Bronwen Wade-Leeuwen Jul 2013

Global Creativity: Intercultural ‘Hands-On’ Workshops For Pre-Service Primary Art Teachers, Bronwen Wade-Leeuwen

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series

This seminal paper is presented against the background of a “hands-off” approach to teaching visual arts in most of the Western world where visual arts education is often considered by the school community as peripheral to the real “mission” of education. Most scholars agree that the role of pre-service teachers in the twenty-first century is to develop creative thinking and action in children. However limited research has been conducted into this area of study. The basic aim of this study is to use arts-based research inquiry to investigate Australian primary pre-service teachers' situated knowledge, experiences, and implicit theories using empirical …

State Conservation As Settler Colonial Governance At Ka‘Ena Point, Hawai‘I, Bianca Isaki Jul 2013

State Conservation As Settler Colonial Governance At Ka‘Ena Point, Hawai‘I, Bianca Isaki

Environmental and Earth Law Journal (EELJ)

This paper argues, by illustrating, that liberal multiculturalism and natural resources are interlinked strategies of settler colonial governance in political debates surrounding the construction of a “predator-proof” fence for conservation purposes across Native Hawaiian lands of deep cultural and historical significance at Ka`ena Point, a state wilderness park in Hawai`i. First, this paper shifts debates framed in terms of the seeming recalcitrance of Native Hawaiian cultural practitioners to recognize the necessity of natural resource management. Second, it considers how these political debates are repeated in the context of legal questions over the forms through which Native Hawaiian cultural claims may …

Considering Two Audiences When Recording Lectures As Lecturecasts, Brandon I. Collier-Reed Jul 2013

Considering Two Audiences When Recording Lectures As Lecturecasts, Brandon I. Collier-Reed

The African Journal of Information Systems

This article presents the outcome of an investigation into the provision of lecturecasts to students. The objective was to ensure that both those who attended live lectures of a second-year engineering course and/or watched recorded versions of the lectures had an experience that supported their learning. A range of data was drawn on including the personal reflection of the lecturer of the course, questionnaires, and student interviews. The qualitative data were analysed through an inductive process that drew on the principles of grounded theory and the findings that emerged included the role of the “talking head” in recordings, balancing the …

The Transcriptomics To Proteomics Of Hair Cell Regeneration: Looking For A Hair Cell In A Haystack, Gopinath Rajadinakaran Jul 2013

The Transcriptomics To Proteomics Of Hair Cell Regeneration: Looking For A Hair Cell In A Haystack, Gopinath Rajadinakaran

UCHC Articles - Research

Mature mammals exhibit very limited capacity for regeneration of auditory hair cells, while all non-mammalian vertebrates examined can regenerate them. In an effort to find therapeutic targets for deafness and balance disorders, scientists have examined gene expression patterns in auditory tissues under different developmental and experimental conditions. Microarray technology has allowed the large-scale study of gene expression profiles (transcriptomics) at whole-genome levels, but since mRNA expression does not necessarily correlate with protein expression, other methods, such as microRNA analysis and proteomics, are needed to better understand the process of hair cell regeneration. These technologies and some of the results of …

A Black And White Game: Racial Stereotypes In Baseball, Patrick Ferrucci, Edson C. Tandoc Jr., Chad Painter, Glenn Leshner Jul 2013

A Black And White Game: Racial Stereotypes In Baseball, Patrick Ferrucci, Edson C. Tandoc Jr., Chad Painter, Glenn Leshner

Communication Faculty Publications

The current study experimentally tested stereotypes and credibility of messages associated with athletes. Participants were asked to rate photos of black and white baseball players based on stereotypes identified in previous literature. They were then given an anonymous paragraph from a newspaper that featured either a stereotype consistent or inconsistent message and asked to rate the author's credibility. Black players were rated significantly higher in physical strength and natural ability, which is consistent with previous literature. However, inconsistent with previous literature, white players were not rated significantly higher in intelligence and leadership. Despite these results, when measuring credibility, this study …

A Latina Captain In Showtime's Dexter: (Un)Veiling A Progressive Image Of Latinas Through Discourse Analysis Of Media-Audience Co-Constructions Of Latinidad', Diana Leon

Communication ETDs

This thesis focuses on Showtimes series Dexter as a rich text through which to study the production and consumption of racial and gender representations in media. More specifically, this research examines the representation of a prominent Latina character (Captain Maria LaGuerta) in Dexter and the audience readings of this character to explore the co-construction of contemporary discourses on Latinidad. On the basis of a critical discourse analysis of the television text and online viewer comments, I discuss relations between the meanings encoded in the text and the meanings co-constructed interactively by audiences online, and the ideological implications of such discourse …

Environmental Protection Agency Consultations With Indian Tribes: An Intercultural Struggle Over Process Of 'Consent', Denise Scannell Guida Jul 2013

Environmental Protection Agency Consultations With Indian Tribes: An Intercultural Struggle Over Process Of 'Consent', Denise Scannell Guida

Publications and Research

On November 6, 2000, President Bill Clinton signed his final executive order on

Consultation and Coordination with Tribal Governments. It was his last attempt to establish meaningful consultation processes with American Indians in the development of federal environmental policies. Based on ongoing environmental issues between the two cultures and the rising concern for environmental justice, the United States government wanted to identify the necessary improvements in communication and coordination among tribal and federal environmental programs, specifically regarding issues of information exchange, and creating partnerships among stakeholders. An analysis of the executive order, and a case study of the U.S. …

Imaginenative 2012: Ecocinema And The Indigenous Film Festival, Salma Monani, Miranda Brady Jul 2013

Imaginenative 2012: Ecocinema And The Indigenous Film Festival, Salma Monani, Miranda Brady

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

Much scholarship points to how ecological concerns are never far from Indigenous struggles for political sovereignty and public participation. In this paper we turn to the Indigenous film festival as a relatively understudied yet rich site to explore such ecological concerns. Specifically, we consider, the Toronto-based ImagineNATIVE, a prominent hub in the Indigenous film festival circuit. Through examining the festival’s 2012 film selections, we highlight films with explicit and less overt eco-activist messages. While the films themselves speak to eco-imaginations, we also draw from the festival experience to consider how the event itself participates in eco-sensibilities through its …

A Way Of Seeing: The Transformation Of American Soldiers' Snapshot Photography During The Vietnam War, Sara Hagerty Jul 2013

A Way Of Seeing: The Transformation Of American Soldiers' Snapshot Photography During The Vietnam War, Sara Hagerty

Art & Art History ETDs

Cultural conventions of appropriateness, social standards of artistic practice, and contemporary vernacular traditions of how to visually commemorate ones life impact snapshot photography. An analysis of American soldiers' snapshots taken during the Vietnam War from the National Veterans Art Museum's archive in Chicago reveals a unique set of images due to their origins as snapshots and their stylistic references to other visual frameworks that are historically used to represent war. Through an examination of the culture of snapshot making, the historic presence of cameras on the battlefield, the conditions faced by American soldiers during the Vietnam War, and the popular …
