Pragmatic Transfer In Japanese Requests In Emails, Takako Noda Jan 2013

Pragmatic Transfer In Japanese Requests In Emails, Takako Noda

Open Access Theses

The speech act of request is known as a face threatening act (FTA) in the sense of Brown and Levinson (1987) and is considered a speech act that may negatively affect human relationships when it is used against cultural norms and constraints. Requests have been investigated in various languages, including English and Japanese (e.g., Hill et al., 1986; Fukushima, 1996; Gagné, 2010). Studies about interlanguage pragmatics, such as Matsuda et al. (2008) and Wada et al. (2008), showed characteristics of requests made by learners of Japanese. However, these studies all focused on the oral speech act, and there are few …

Calypso: Effecting Conflict Transformation Through The Indigenous Calypso Art-Form, Edward M. Phillips Jan 2013

Calypso: Effecting Conflict Transformation Through The Indigenous Calypso Art-Form, Edward M. Phillips

Journal of Global Initiatives: Policy, Pedagogy, Perspective

The calypso, which forms an integral part of the carnival celebrations of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, is a syncretic popular art-form that has its origin in Africa. The art-form, having been influenced and adapted by the experiences of enslaved Africans in the Diaspora, has been fused in the vortex of plantation society. Today, the music of carnival has evolved considerably, with the calypso becoming one of the cornerstones of the carnival celebration. This paper looks at aspects of the subset of political calypsos that offer commentary on the socio-political and/or economic issues in the Republic of Trinidad and …

Fate Of 17Α-Estradiol, 17Β-Estradiol, And Estrone In Agricultural Soils And Sediments, Michael L. Mashtare Jr Jan 2013

Fate Of 17Α-Estradiol, 17Β-Estradiol, And Estrone In Agricultural Soils And Sediments, Michael L. Mashtare Jr

Open Access Dissertations

The shift to concentrated animal production facilities and increasing rural-urban migration has increased the localized land application of nearly 1 billion tons of manure and biosolids annually. Although these applications provide nutrients and contribute to soil tilth, they also serve as a source for an estimated 49 tons of the natural manure-borne estrogens, 17α-estradiol (17α-E2), 17β-estradiol (17β-E2), and estrone (E1). While these estrogens are critical to endocrine systems, the low concentrations observed in the environment can disrupt endocrine function in non-target organisms, e.g., altering secondary sex characteristics which can lead to changes in wildlife communities.

Research presented here focuses on …

Paper Moon, Teresa Bramlette Reeves, Kirstie Tepper, Jessica Stephenson Jan 2013

Paper Moon, Teresa Bramlette Reeves, Kirstie Tepper, Jessica Stephenson

Exhibition Publications

Paper Moon focused on work that, in one way or another, served as a substitute for the real thing. The emphasis of this exchange was not on artifice but rather on a sincere effort to imitate an ideal, the desire for which may be motivated by limited circumstances, need, adoration, and longing, rather than greed or irony. The show examined how these substitutes were intended to function, the nature of their appeal, and what role authenticity and our ability to “make believe” played in the proffered illusion.

The idea for this exhibition began with a documentary about teenage magicians and …

Effects Of Ethanol Exposure And Withdrawal On Ex Vivo Cerebellar Slices, Stacy Roudabush Jan 2013

Effects Of Ethanol Exposure And Withdrawal On Ex Vivo Cerebellar Slices, Stacy Roudabush

Theses & ETDs

Alcoholism is an addiction to ethanol (EtOH) that is marked by cyclic periods of chronic EtOH intake, withdrawal, attempts at abstinence, and relapse. Research into the excitotoxic properties of EtOH in the central nervous system (CNS) dominates the current scientific field, while studies are less focused on the mechanisms underlying brain atrophy and damage following chronic EtOH exposure and withdrawal periods. The current thesis attempted to explore the mechanisms following EtOH exposure and withdrawal in an in vitro model using adult (ten- and eleven-week old) 250 μm mouse cerebellar slices. Myelin and axon-associated proteins and actin fibers were significantly degraded …

A Little Starling Told Me: A Modern Day Translation Of Olga Martynova's Sogar Papageien Uberleben Uns, Dorothea Trotter Jan 2013

A Little Starling Told Me: A Modern Day Translation Of Olga Martynova's Sogar Papageien Uberleben Uns, Dorothea Trotter

Theses & ETDs

Through the world wide web, today's translator has access to an infinite number of resources which enable her to give one group of language speakers, say English speakers, the option of reading a contemporary work from another language and culture like German. She can use online computer translators, find a multitude of forums in which the meaning and usage of a particular word is discussed in either language, and with a few taps and clicks on the keyboard, have an instantaneous explanation of what an unknown author referenced in her work. Despite these informational developments, translation is still traditional. The …

Negotiating Ethnosexual Difference In The Armenian Transnation, Nelli Sargsyan Jan 2013

Negotiating Ethnosexual Difference In The Armenian Transnation, Nelli Sargsyan

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Since heteronormativity is an inextricable part of the ethnonationalist ideologies and discourses of Armenianness, conformity and transgression are communally policed both in the Republic of Armenia, as well as in the Armenian diaspora, albeit in different ways. In the diaspora it is through public silence regarding Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) and queer self-identified Armenians that hetero-belonging is managed. In the Republic of Armenia, on the other hand, it is managed through hate speech promoted by public figures and through mass media. In both cases the anxiety that the issue of non-heteronormativity points to in the public outcry is that …

Interactivity, Interdependence, And Intertextuality : The Meaning Of Video Games In American Civil Society, Brian Mckernan Jan 2013

Interactivity, Interdependence, And Intertextuality : The Meaning Of Video Games In American Civil Society, Brian Mckernan

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

In recent years the video game community has undergone a drastic transformation. What began as a communal pastime for programmers in federally-funded research laboratories during the late 1950s and 1960s has erupted into a multi-billion dollar industry enjoyed by millions of Americans. Reflecting this transformation, social scientists from a wide variety of fields have begun to explore video games' social significance. Sadly, so far very little work has examined video games from a sociological viewpoint. In this work I attempt to remedy this serious omission by adopting a cultural sociology framework to study video games' social meanings in three different …

Blackness Of A Different Color : The Complexities Of Identity Of Haitian Migrants And Their Descendants In The Bahamas, Katiuscia Pelerin Jan 2013

Blackness Of A Different Color : The Complexities Of Identity Of Haitian Migrants And Their Descendants In The Bahamas, Katiuscia Pelerin

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

"Blackness of a Different Color: The Complexities of Identity of Haitian Migrants and their Descendants in the Bahamas" is the first book-length study of its kind, and the first since 1978 to examine the Haitian experience in the Bahamas. It establishes that the Haitian diaspora is as worthy a topic of academic attention as other diasporas, not just as an appendage of the African diaspora. It examines how Haitians experience a complex, but by no means unique, form of black on black racism in which Bahamians have

Is Translation Enough? : A Study Of The Item Characteristics Which Influence Equivalence Between English And Spanish Versions Of A Selection Test, Andrea Valentine Jan 2013

Is Translation Enough? : A Study Of The Item Characteristics Which Influence Equivalence Between English And Spanish Versions Of A Selection Test, Andrea Valentine

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The goal of this study was to investigate the equivalence between an English and Spanish version of a selection test that was used to hire entry-level employees for a nationwide retail organization. By using a test that was back translated from English to Spanish, this study aimed at understanding whether different item characteristics are related to differential item functioning (DIF) and whether these item characteristics moderate the degree of equivalence between IRT item parameters. An understanding of which item characteristics influence equivalence can help guide researchers and practitioners in deciding on which items require test adaptation and which can simply …

Functional Roles Of The Insulin-Regulated Glucose Transporter-4 In The Hippocampus, Jiah Pearson-Leary Jan 2013

Functional Roles Of The Insulin-Regulated Glucose Transporter-4 In The Hippocampus, Jiah Pearson-Leary

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Although a great deal of research has elucidated both localization and function of many glucose transporters (GluTs) throughout the brain, the function of brain insulin-responsive glucose transporter-4 (GluT4) remains unclear (McEwen & Reagan, 2004). Because type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM; insulin resistance, i.e., impaired insulin signaling) is a risk factor for Alzheimer's disease (AD), and because the signaling mechanisms insulin uses to mediate hippocampal processes and memory are unclear, a major purpose of this dissertation was to determine whether hippocampal GluT4, which is responsible for insulin's glucoregulatory and canonical effects in the periphery, is necessary for insulin's effects in the …

Tabaqueras On The Shop Floor : Gendered Labor Process And Production Model Transformations In Cigar Factories In Santiago, Dominican Republic, 1940-2011, Ingrid Mercedes Bircann-Barkey Jan 2013

Tabaqueras On The Shop Floor : Gendered Labor Process And Production Model Transformations In Cigar Factories In Santiago, Dominican Republic, 1940-2011, Ingrid Mercedes Bircann-Barkey

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This dissertation uncovers the different gendered labor processes that have shaped the cigar women workers or tabaqueras' work experiences on the cigar shop floor or galera since the 1940s. I argue that contradictory processes of exclusion and inclusion in the urban-rural nexus of the tobacco/cigar economy may be based on gendered notions of skills. This gendered notion may be traced to how changes in state policy, international markets, and financial systems as well as changes in premium cigar production models, have transformed the galera's social organization and labor process.

The Role Of Progesterone Receptor In The Development Of The Mesocortical Dopaminergic Pathway, Jari Willing Jan 2013

The Role Of Progesterone Receptor In The Development Of The Mesocortical Dopaminergic Pathway, Jari Willing

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The mesocortical dopaminergic pathway, comprised of projections from the ventral tegmental area (VTA) to the prefrontal cortex (PFC), mediates many of the most complex forms of cognitive behaviors and has been associated with clinical disorders such as ADHD and schizophrenia. While this circuit continues to develop throughout much of the lifespan, there is a rapid period of maturation, early in development, in which this circuit is highly sensitive to disruption. Steroid hormone receptors are powerful transcription factors, capable of affecting a variety of neurodevelopmental processes and are expressed in many regions throughout the developing brain. Specifically, the nuclear progesterone receptor …

From The Philippines To The Field Museum: A Study Of Ilongot (Bugkalot) Personal Adornment, Sarah E. Carlson Jan 2013

From The Philippines To The Field Museum: A Study Of Ilongot (Bugkalot) Personal Adornment, Sarah E. Carlson

Honors Projects

Abstract: The Philippine Collection at The Field Museum contains over 10,000 objects, including hundreds of objects of personal adornment. As an intern at The Field Museum in the summer of 2012, I got to experience the collection first-hand and began examining six ornaments from the Ilongot peoples of the Philippines. At the beginning of the 20th century, the Ilongot wore ornaments to visually communicate social meaning about themselves, their villages, and their relationships. The Ilongot were a headhunting society with fearsome warriors who beheaded their enemies. These hunters wore delicately crafted earrings and headdresses to mark their masculinity and …

Locative Media, Augmented Realities And The Ordinary American Landscape, Andrew Boulton Jan 2013

Locative Media, Augmented Realities And The Ordinary American Landscape, Andrew Boulton

Theses and Dissertations--Geography

This dissertation investigates the role of annotative locative media in mediating experiences of place. The overarching impetus motivating this research is the need to bring to bear the theoretical and substantive concerns of cultural landscape studies on the development of a methodological framework for interrogating the ways in which annotative locative media reconfigure experiences of urban landscapes. I take as my empirical cases i) Google Maps with its associated Street View and locational placemark interface, and ii) Layar, an augmented reality platform combining digital mapping and real-time locational augmentation. In the spirit of landscape studies’ longstanding and renewed interest in …

Callogenesis And Production Of Anthocyanin And Chlorophyll In Callus Cultures Of Vegetative And Floral Explants In Rosa Gallica And Rosa Hybrida (Rosaceae), Roshanak Tarrahi, Farkhondeh Rezanejad

Turkish Journal of Botany

Callogenesis using vegetative (leaf, stem, petiole) and floral (petal, pistil, anther) explants of Rosa gallica and R. hybrida was investigated using different combinations of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid, 6-benzylaminopurine, and gibberellic acid on modified Murashige and Skoog medium. The highest callogenesis was obtained on Murashige and Skoog medium containing ratios of 2 and 3 mg L^{-1} of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid to 1 mg L^{-1} of 6-benzylamino purine in both species depending on type of explant. Stem explants in R. gallica initiated callus after 4 days while the other explants in R. gallica and all explants in R. hybrida showed the greatest percentage of …

A Case Study Of Reading Instruction In A Philippine Classroom, Maria Selena Protacio, Loukia K. Sarroub Jan 2013

A Case Study Of Reading Instruction In A Philippine Classroom, Maria Selena Protacio, Loukia K. Sarroub

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

In this article, we describe the reading practices in a public and high-achieving 6th grade English classroom in the Philippines. By utilizing a four resources model, we discuss the different roles that students assume in this classroom. Students in this class are mainly code breakers and text users and have limited opportunities to assume the other two roles of the four resources model. This case study provides a different view of reading, specifically a view of a culture of reading wherein higher status is given to oral reading performance rather than comprehension. We describe the way a high-achieving 6th grade …

Creating Room For A Singularity Of Our Own: Reading Sue Lange's "We, Robots", Marleen S. Barr Jan 2013

Creating Room For A Singularity Of Our Own: Reading Sue Lange's "We, Robots", Marleen S. Barr

Publications and Research

The accessibility of Lange’s text might mitigate against recognizing its importance. Lange’s simple sentence structure and direct communicative mode convey a presently overlooked logical moral assertion: the impending Singularity is not a male-dominated patriarchal domain. The Singularity, in other words, should not be construed in a manner which excludes women and feminism. This assertion is patently obvious. But, nonetheless, it is often ignored. Before I read Lange’s novella as a description of the Singularity which feminists can embrace, I include the following background information: 1) a discussion about why the discourse relating to the Singularity needs to be expanded and …

Single Fathers And Social Support, Elizabeth Suzanne Howe-Huist Jan 2013

Single Fathers And Social Support, Elizabeth Suzanne Howe-Huist

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Single fathers have, for the most part, been overlooked in research, even though the proportion of children being raised by custodial fathers has been steadily increasing since the 1970s. This exploratory study aims to understand the factors that single fathers take into consideration when deciding which types of social support to use in helping them raise their children. By analyzing the results with the concepts of social exchange theory, we can better understand why some types of support are used and why others are not. Social exchange theory states that individuals will seek interactions with low costs and high rewards. …

Dirty Pictures—Not For Sale: Re-Reading Bellocq’S Storyville Portraits, Mollie S. Le Veque Jan 2013

Dirty Pictures—Not For Sale: Re-Reading Bellocq’S Storyville Portraits, Mollie S. Le Veque

CGU Theses & Dissertations

In this paper, I examine E.J. Bellocq's "Storyville Portraits" within art historical and feminist historiographies. One of the most infamously alluring parts of New Orleans at the turn of the century, the Storyville red light district is hardly part of contemporary American consciousness today. Part of my work involves an evaluation of what a lack of archival resources does to perceptions of Storyville and more broadly, the stereotypical late Victorian “fallen women” that has been read into history - both by historians and popular culture. However, my focal point is indeed the portraits and how they might be re-read and …

Regulation Of Pten/Akt Pathway Enhances Cardiomyogenesis And Attenuates Adverse Left Ventricular Remodeling Following Thymosin Beta 4 Overexpressing Embryonic Stem Cell Transplantation In The Infarcted Heart, Binbin Yan, Reetu D. Regulation Of Pten/Akt Pathway Enhances Cardiomyogenesis And Attenuates Adverse Left Ventricular Remodeling Following Thymosin Beta 4 Overexpressing Embryonic Stem Cell Transplantation In The Infarcted Heart, Binbin Yan, Reetu D. Singla, Latifa S. Abdelli, Pawan K. Singal, Dinender K. Singla

Faculty Bibliography 2010s

Thymosin beta 4 (T beta 4), a small G-actin sequestering peptide, mediates cell proliferation, migration, and angiogenesis. Whether embryonic stem (ES) cells, overexpressing T beta 4, readily differentiate into cardiac myocytes in vitro and in vivo and enhance cardioprotection following transplantation post myocardial infarction (MI) remains unknown. Accordingly, we established stable mouse ES cell lines, RFP-ESCs and T beta 4-ESCs, expressing RFP and an RFP-T beta 4 fusion protein, respectively. In vitro, the number of spontaneously beating embryoid bodies (EBs) was significantly increased in T beta 4-ESCs at day 9, 12 and 15, compared with RFP-ESCs. Enhanced expression of cardiac …

How Does Culture Influence Corporate Risk-Taking?, Kai Li, Dale Griffin, Heng Yue, Longkai Zhao Jan 2013

How Does Culture Influence Corporate Risk-Taking?, Kai Li, Dale Griffin, Heng Yue, Longkai Zhao

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

We investigate the role of national culture in corporate risk-taking. We postulate that culture influencescorporate risk-taking both through its effect on managerial decision-making and through its effect on acountry’s formal institutions. Further, we postulate that the influence of culture is conditioned on theextent of managerial discretion as measured by earnings discretion and firm size. Using firm-level datafrom 35 countries and employing a hierarchical linear modeling approach to isolate the effects of firmleveland country-level variables, we show that individualism has a positive and significant association, whereas uncertainty avoidance and harmony have negative and significant associations, with corporaterisk-taking. Greater earnings discretion strengthens and …

"Who Taught Us How To Lead?" Parental Influence On Leadership Styles, Asiyat Magomaeva Jan 2013

"Who Taught Us How To Lead?" Parental Influence On Leadership Styles, Asiyat Magomaeva

Wayne State University Theses

There is evidence that parenting styles shape the development of competence and achievement strategies, and that the authoritative parenting style is the most successful style in developing appropriate achievement strategies (Aunola, Stattin & Nurmi, 2000; Glasgow, Dornbusch, Troyer, Steinberg & Ritter, 1997)The present study investigated the link between parenting styles experienced during childhood and leadership styles adopted later in life, as well as which parent children perceive as most effective and whether that influences the leadership style they adopt later in life. Findings suggest that knowing the parenting style one experienced in childhood can help identify an individual's future leadership …

Quantitative Analysis Of Impacts Of Employee Engagement On Continuance And Normative Commitment, Daniel A. Cernas Ortiz, Hong Qin, Wai Kwan (Elaine) Lau Jan 2013

Quantitative Analysis Of Impacts Of Employee Engagement On Continuance And Normative Commitment, Daniel A. Cernas Ortiz, Hong Qin, Wai Kwan (Elaine) Lau

Accounting Faculty Research

A positive relationship between employee engagement and affective commitment is already documented in the literature. However, we do not adequately know how engagement is associated with continuance and normative commitment. Using survey methodology we find that while engagement has a non–significant positive association with continuance commitment; it has a positive association with normative commitment. No negative association was found between engagement and continuance commitment. These results advance prior findings about the effect of employee engagement on different types of commitment and provide understandings in setting effective performance standards in the organization.
