Bracketing Ncaa Men's Division I Basketball Tournament, Xiao Zhang Jan 2013

Bracketing Ncaa Men's Division I Basketball Tournament, Xiao Zhang

Statistics

This paper presents a new bracketing method for all 63 games in the NCAA Division 1 basketball tournament. This method, based on the logistic conditional probability models, is self-consistent in terms of constructing winning probabilities of each game. Empirical results show that this method outperforms the ordinal logistic regression and expectation method with restriction(Restricted OLRE model) proposed by West (2006).

Model Validation And Diagnostis In Right Censored Regression, Tatjana Miljkovic Jan 2013

Model Validation And Diagnostis In Right Censored Regression, Tatjana Miljkovic

Statistics

When censored data are present in the linear regression setting, the Expectation-Maximization (EM) algorithm and the Buckley and James (BJ) method are two algorithms that can be implemented to fit the regression model. We focus our study on the EM algorithm because it is easier to implement than the BJ algorithm and it uses common assumptions in regression theory, such as normally distributed errors. The BJ algorithm, however, is used for comparison purposes in benchmarking the EM parameter estimates, their variability, and model selection. In this dissertation, validation and influence diagnostic tools are proposed for right censored regression using the …

An Analysis Of Factors Contributing To Wins In The National Hockey League, Joseph Michael Roith Jan 2013

An Analysis Of Factors Contributing To Wins In The National Hockey League, Joseph Michael Roith

Statistics

This thesis looks at common factors that have the largest impact on winning games in the NHL. Data was collected from regular season games for all teams in the NHL over seven seasons. Logistic and least squares regressions were performed to create a win probability model and a goal margin model to predict the outcome of games. Discriminant analysis was also used to determine significant factors over the course of an entire season. Save percentage margin, shot margin, block margin, short-handed shot margin, short-handed faceoff percentage, and even-handed faceoff percentage were found to be significant influences on individual game wins. …

The research provides professional knowledge and practical experience that extends beyond the general …

Three Essays Investigating China's Coal Production Needs And Consumption Patterns., Nyakundi M. Michieka Jan 2013

Three Essays Investigating China's Coal Production Needs And Consumption Patterns., Nyakundi M. Michieka

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

China, characterized by the world.s largest population, is one of the most rapidly growing countries and the largest consumer of energy in the world. Over the last decade, China.s consumption of total global coal has increased by 15%. Besides being the largest producer of coal, China currently consumes over 40% of the yearly total coal output. Since China.s appetite for coal is growing, it is important to understand the sources of this growth. This study investigates China.s coal consumption patterns and production needs among the various sectors in its economy. It intends to identify and model the market forces affecting …

Parents' Perceptions Of Children's Emotions: Relations With Meta-Emotion Philosophy And Adult Attachment., Jennifer N. Morey Jan 2013

Parents' Perceptions Of Children's Emotions: Relations With Meta-Emotion Philosophy And Adult Attachment., Jennifer N. Morey

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The purpose of this study was to investigate how parents’ perceptions of, feelings toward, and anticipated responses to children’s emotions related to parents’ meta-emotion philosophy (MEP) and attachment. Parents (mothers and fathers) completed an online research study where they viewed photographs of children (aged 10-14 years) displaying varying intensities of happiness, sadness, fear, anger, and neutral expressions. Parents labeled the emotion and identified the emotion’s intensity, their own emotion, and their anticipated responses. They also completed measures assessing their MEP and attachment. Results were analyzed using structural equation modeling. The model for MEP predicting happiness did not fit well, but …

Essays On The Effects Of Womens Rights On Female Brain Drain., Maryam Naghsh Nejad Jan 2013

Essays On The Effects Of Womens Rights On Female Brain Drain., Maryam Naghsh Nejad

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation investigates the effects of gender discrimination, proxied by a women's rights index, on the female high-skilled migration rates relative to that of male (the female brain drain ratio). First, by developing a model of migration choice I find non-linear effects of gender discrimination on the female brain drain ratio as a result of effects of gender discrimination on both costs and benefits of migration. At low levels of women's rights, increases in the index lead to increases in the female brain drain ratio. At very low levels of women's rights, it is often prohibitively costly for females to …

Application Of Liquid Chromatography - Tandem Mass Spectrometry Techniques To Forensic, Environmental And Clinical Analyses., Lucy Sian Oldfield Jan 2013

Application Of Liquid Chromatography - Tandem Mass Spectrometry Techniques To Forensic, Environmental And Clinical Analyses., Lucy Sian Oldfield

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Liquid chromatography - tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) is a powerful technique offering superior selectivity, sensitivity and flexibility for a diverse range of applications. This document describes the application of LC-MS/MS to analytical problems in environmental, clinical and forensic fields. LC-UV and LC-MS/MS methods were implemented and compared for the analysis of nitroaromatics, nitramines and nitrate esters in soil. Analysis of soils collected at detonation sites showed the presence and concentration of contaminants to be a function of parameters such as: time since detonation, type of charge employed, nature of detonation and size of charge used. Multi-increment (MI) sampling strategies recommended …

Islamophobia, Hateful Speech, And The Need To Practice Democratic Virtues, Shannon Dunn Jan 2013

Islamophobia, Hateful Speech, And The Need To Practice Democratic Virtues, Shannon Dunn

Journal of Hate Studies

This essay examines the relationship between hateful speech and its potential and realized harmful effects socially and politically vulnerable groups, particularly Muslims, in a democratic society. I critically evaluate the assumption that free speech is an absolute value of secularism and the corresponding definition of Muslims as religious “others” in European and American democratic culture. Instead of arguing strictly for the legal regulation of hateful speech, however, I contend that the cultivation of civic virtues—specifically charity and solidarity—may counteract the harmful effects of such speech, and can lend moral justification for the right of free speech.

Evil Black Guns: Hate, Instrumentality, And The Neutrality Of Firearms, Christopher B. Strain Jan 2013

Evil Black Guns: Hate, Instrumentality, And The Neutrality Of Firearms, Christopher B. Strain

Journal of Hate Studies

In the wake of mass shootings in Aurora, Colorado, where 12 moviegoers were killed and 70 injured; Newtown, Connecticut, where 20 children and 6 adult staff members were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School; and elsewhere, concerned citizens may question whether guns are neutral actors in the rage killings and rampage murders that have become increasingly familiar in U.S. society. Rather than revisit the well-worn aphorism “guns don’t kill people: people do,” this article considers a provocative counter thesis—that firearms may serve not only as mechanisms of violence in shooting rampages but also as catalysts. Can guns themselves cause violence, …

Reclaiming Justice And Eliminating Inequality Through Compassionate Migration: The Relentless Struggle Of Migrants Living In The Shadows, William F. Arrocha Jan 2013

Reclaiming Justice And Eliminating Inequality Through Compassionate Migration: The Relentless Struggle Of Migrants Living In The Shadows, William F. Arrocha

Journal of Hate Studies

This article elaborates on the emerging concept of “compassionate migration” as a counter-hegemonic response to the institutions and systems that criminalize unauthorized immigration, including the assistance provided by those who aid such migrants out of a sense of compassion. In the name of human dignity, it is imperative that those who live in the shadows of United States immigration law and its enforcement system sense that social justice is a tangible possibility, and that they indeed may be able to free themselves from the structures that criminalize them and render them vulnerable to various forms of discrimination and other human …

War Crimes, Wristbands, And Web 2.0: Exploring Online Justice Advocacy, Colonialism And ‘Civilizing Missions’ Through Kony2012, Sarah Steele, Tyler Shores, Yvette Pollastrini Jan 2013

War Crimes, Wristbands, And Web 2.0: Exploring Online Justice Advocacy, Colonialism And ‘Civilizing Missions’ Through Kony2012, Sarah Steele, Tyler Shores, Yvette Pollastrini

Journal of Hate Studies

On March 5, 2012, the advocacy organization Invisible Children released a short 30-minute film entitled Kony2012, on YouTube.com. Within days, the video had gone viral, gaining a mass global viewership. By December 2012, the video had received over 94 million views worldwide, attaining the unofficial status as “the most viral video of all time.” While Kony2012 raised awareness about the urgency of the manhunt for Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) leader Joseph Kony and his exploitation of child soldiers in Uganda, the film generated much controversy. Commentators, both from within Uganda and beyond, raised serious questions about the oversimplified Colonial-style intervention …
