Escherichia coli single-stranded DNA binding protein (SSB) plays essential roles in DNA replication, recombination and repair. SSB functions as a homotetramer with each subunit possessing a DNA binding domain (OB-fold) and an intrinsically disordered C-terminus, of which the last nine amino acids provide the site for interaction with at least a dozen other proteins that function in DNA metabolism. To examine how many C-termini are needed for SSB function, we engineered covalently linked forms of SSB that possess only one or two C-termini within a four-OB-fold “tetramer”. Whereas E. coli expressing SSB with only two tails can survive, expression …
Factors Influencing Job Attainment In Recent Bachelor Graduates: Evidence From Australia, Denise Jackson
Factors Influencing Job Attainment In Recent Bachelor Graduates: Evidence From Australia, Denise Jackson
Research outputs 2013
Favourable graduate employment outcomes are critical for future enrolments in higher education. Enrolments fund higher education providers and ensure a continuous supply of graduates to enhance organisational effectiveness, national productivity and global competitiveness. Recent evidence suggests the global financial crisis has softened graduate labour markets. Stakeholder concerns for graduate career prospects and the adequacy of return on investment from studying at university prompt exploration of those factors which influence graduate employment outcomes. This study tests, using logistic regression, a model of job attainment in recent Bachelor graduates of Australian higher education providers using national data gathered in 2011 (n …

In the original EOS proposal competition in 1989, Dr. Steve Running proposed and was selected as MODIS Science team member responsible for Leaf area index, evapotranspiration and photosynthesis/net primary production, then designated as MOD 15, 16 and 17. At the ATBD review for at-launch products in 1995, NASA decided to give MOD 15 LA I/FPAR to Dr. Ranga Myneni to provide a more theoretically based algorithm, and Dr. Running was directed to focus on MOD 17 PSN/NPP for the Terra atlaunch data product. MOD 16 ET was not dropped, but was deprioritized. At the EOS recompete in 2003 NASA selected …

Characterisation And Optimisation Of Magnetorheological Elastomers, Jennifer Mcintyre
Characterisation And Optimisation Of Magnetorheological Elastomers, Jennifer Mcintyre
Doctoral
The primary aim of this research was to optimise the design of magnetorheological elastomers (MREs), composite materials consisting of magnetic particles in an elastomer matrix. In doing so, the understanding of their dynamic behaviour when subjected to stress would be furthered. Plenty of uses have been suggested for these materials which adapt to their environments and can be tuned to suit operating conditions, but very few of these have actually been realised. Characterising their dynamic behaviour is crucial if they are to gain wider use in commercial applications. The first objective of the research was to investigate the factors affecting …
Meaning And Belief In Constitutional Interpretation, Andrei Marmor
Meaning And Belief In Constitutional Interpretation, Andrei Marmor
Cornell Law Faculty Publications
The distinction between a concept and its different conceptions plays a prominent role in debates about constitutional interpretation. Proponents of a dynamic reading of the Constitution-espousing interpretation of constitutional concepts according to their contemporary understandings typically rely on the idea that the Constitution entrenches only the general concepts it deploys, without authoritatively favoring any particular conception of them-specifically, without favoring the particular conception of the relevant concept that the framers of the Constitution may have had in mind. Originalists argue, to the contrary, that fidelity to the Constitution requires an understanding of its provisions according to the particular conception of …
Testing The Validity Of Gre Scores On Predicting Graduate Performance For Engineering Students, Wei Wang
Testing The Validity Of Gre Scores On Predicting Graduate Performance For Engineering Students, Wei Wang
College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The Graduate Record Examination (GRE), a set of standardized tests designed to determine the scholastic potential of graduate students, is widely used in graduate admissions in the United States. How GRE can predict graduate students’ performance has crucial importance both for universities and for students. Numerous of research studies have examined the validity of GRE scores in predicting graduate success, however, some limitations and gaps still existed in previous studies. This study targeted a specific discipline of engineering, and investigated the validity of GRE scores in predicting graduate performance, as measured by graduate GPA (GGPA) for engineering students. The differences …

Understanding The Process By Which A Healthy Population Seeks Nutrition And Exercise Information, Sally Hillis
College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Faced with an overwhelming amount of available sources and different perspectives, researchers in the field of Nutrition and Health Sciences continually strive to identify key factors that shape a healthy lifestyle. Employing a qualitative methods design, this pilot study research project utilized a constructivist grounded theory approach to develop a model explaining the process by which healthy individuals acquire nutrition and exercise information. This model rests on the philosophical views and actions of participants in seeking meaningful and reliable sources guiding their decision-making strategies and offers a more complete understanding of this process. Implications of this research would be to …
Political Hate Machines: Outside Groups And The 2012 Presidential Campaign Advertising Market, Martin Nader
Political Hate Machines: Outside Groups And The 2012 Presidential Campaign Advertising Market, Martin Nader
Department of Political Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This dissertation explores the rise of outside groups and their influence in the 2012 presidential campaign advertising market. Unlike official candidates, outside groups are not vulnerable to the potential electoral risks of public backlash for being too negative; therefore, outside groups do not possess the same incentives as official candidates to regulate their use of attack ads. Compared to campaign ads produced by official presidential candidates, ads produced by outside groups are (1) overwhelmingly negative attack ads, (2) utilize a backwards-looking retrospective orientation, and (3) draw heavily on negative emotions like anger, fear and disgust.
Considering the role of outside …

The Regressing Progress Clause: Rethinking Constitutional Indifference To Harmful Content In Copyright, Ned Snow
Faculty Publications
The Constitution's Progress Clause purports to restrict Congress's copyright power to works that "promote the Progress of Science and useful Arts." For most of the past two centuries, this Clause has set a minimal content-based standard for copyright eligibility. It denied protection for a work whose content did not rise to the level of useful knowledge, in that the work either lacked compositional value or portrayed an immoral or unlawful subject matter. As evidenced by judicial and scholarly writings, this construction of the Progress Clause was consistent with the 1903 decision in Bleistein v. Donaldson Lithographing Co., where the Court …

Levoglucosan Indicates High Levels Of Biomass Burning Aerosols Over Oceans From The Arctic To Antarctic, Qi-Hou Hu, Zhou-Qing Xie, Xin-Ming Wang, Hui Kang, Pengfei Zhang
Publications and Research
Biomass burning is known to affect air quality, global carbon cycle, and climate. However, the extent to which biomass burning gases/aerosols are present on a global scale, especially in the marine atmosphere, is poorly understood. Here we report the molecular tracer levoglucosan concentrations in marine air from the Arctic Ocean through the North and South Pacific Ocean to Antarctica during burning season. Levoglucosan was found to be present in all regions at ng/m3 levels with the highest atmospheric loadings present in the mid-latitudes (30°–60° N and S), intermediate loadings in the Arctic, and lowest loadings in the Antarctic and equatorial …

Loss of postnatal mammalian auditory hair cells (HCs) is irreversible. Earlier studies have highlighted the importance of the Retinoblastoma family of proteins (pRBs) (i.e., Rb1, Rbl1/p107, and Rbl2/p130) in the auditory cells’ proliferation and emphasized our lack of information on their specific roles in the auditory system. We have previously demonstrated that lack of Rbl2/p130 moderately affects HCs’ and supporting cells’ (SCs) proliferation. Here, we present evidence supporting multiple roles for Rbl1/p107 in the developing and mature mouse organ of Corti (OC). Like other pRBs, Rbl1/p107 is expressed in the OC, particularly in the Hensen’s and Deiters’ cells. Moreover, Rbl1/p107 …

Identification And Rna Binding Characterization Of Plant Virus Rna Silencing Suppressor Proteins, Jeff Vargason, Carissa J. Burch, Jesse W. Wilson
Faculty Publications - Department of Biological & Molecular Science
Suppression is a common mechanism employed by viruses to evade the antiviral effects of the host’s RNA silencing pathway. The activity of suppression has commonly been localized to gene products in the virus, but the variety of mechanisms used in suppression by these viral proteins spans nearly the complete biochemical pathway of RNA silencing in the host. This review describes the agrofiltration assay and a slightly modified version of the agro-infiltration assay called co-infiltration, which are common methods used to observe RNA silencing and identify viral silencing suppressor proteins in plants, respectively. In addition, this review will provide an overview …

Construction Workers' Crystalline Silica Exposure: Statistical Analysis Of A Literature-Based Database, Jean-François Sauvé, Charles Beaudry, Denis Bégin, Chantal Dion, Michel Gérin, Jérôme Lavoué

Happy Kwanzaa? An Afrocentric Comparison Of Black Male College Graduates And Black Male Jail/ Prison Releasees, Natasha C. Pratt-Harris
African Journal of Criminology and Justice Studies
This paper summarizes key findings of a qualitative dissertation study that involved interviews with black male college graduates (BMCs) and black male jail/prison releasees (BMRs). One component of the study was a comparison of the socio-economic characteristics in the families of BMCs and BMRs. The study also measured if BMCs and BMRs identified with three Kwanzaa principles - Umoja (unity), Ujima (collective work and responsibility), and Ujamaa (economic cooperation). Black males are products of single parent household structures that are characterized by strained financial conditions. These are related to low college enrollment and graduation rates and high rates of incarceration. …

Probation As A Non-Custodial Measure In Nigeria: Making A Case For Adult Probation Service, Abubakri O. Yekini, Mashkur Salisu
African Journal of Criminology and Justice Studies
Imprisonment as a disposition method has created a lot of problems not only in Nigeria criminal justice system but also, in most countries. It is now believed that imprisonment no longer serves the purpose for which it was meant to serve- deterrence. The offenders wrong the state and yet the state is responsible for their welfare while in prison. In 2012, over N50 billion (about $312,500,000) (Appropriation Act 2012) was budgeted for prison and yet the prison sub-culture makes inmate come out more hardened. This paper seeks to appraise the law and practice of probation as a non-custodial disposition method …

Assessing Current Programs And Reentry Needs In Trinidad And Tobago: Insights From Offenders – An Exploratory Study, Melvina Sumter, Elizabeth Monk-Turner, John Rougier
African Journal of Criminology and Justice Studies
Much literature in the United States explores how offenders’ perceive current programs and reentry challenges. However, little is known about such needs in the Trinidad and Tobago Prison System (TTPS). This research was designed to determine what are the perceived reentry needs of the sampled offenders? As such, fifty offenders in the TTPS were asked about how they perceive current services provided by TTPS, what programs they believe are necessary for success on release, and their anxiety level about (release) returning to the community in order to gauge their perceptions about anticipated reentry needs. Over all, respondents’ identified employment, life …
