The Genetic Contribution Of Cidea Polymorphisms, Haplotypes And Loci Interaction To Obesity In A Han Chinese Population, Jingjing Wu, Ling Zhang, Jie Zhang, Ying Dai, Lili Bian, Manshu Song, Alyce C. Russell, Wei Wang

Research outputs 2013

To investigate the association of tag-SNPs and haplotype structures of the CIDEA gene with obesity in a Han Chinese population. Five single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) (rs1154588/V115F, rs4796955/SNP1, rs8092502/SNP2, rs12962340/SNP3 and rs7230480/SNP4) in the CIDEA gene were genotyped in a case-control study. Genotyping was performed using the sequenom matrixassisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry iPLEX platform. There were significant differences between the obese and control groups in genotype distributions of V115F (P>0.001), SNP1 (P = 0.006) and SNP2 (P = 0.005). Carriers of V115F-TT, SNP1-GG and SNP2-CC genotypes had a 2.84-fold (95 % CI 1.73-4.66), 2.19-fold (95 % CI 1.09-4.38) …

Pine As Fast Food: Foraging Ecology Of An Endangered Cockatoo In A Forestry Landscape, William Stock, Hugh Finn, Jackson Parker, Ken Dods

Research outputs 2013

Pine plantations near Perth, Western Australia have provided an important food source for endangered Carnaby’s Cockatoos (Calyptorhynchus latirostris) since the 1940s. Plans to harvest these plantations without re-planting will remove this food source by 2031 or earlier. To assess the impact of pine removal, we studied the ecological association between Carnaby’s Cockatoos and pine using behavioural, nutritional, and phenological data. Pine plantations provided high densities of seed (158 025 seeds ha21) over a large area (c. 15 000 ha). Carnaby’s Cockatoos fed throughout these plantations and removed almost the entire annual crop of pine cones. Peak cockatoo abundance coincided with …

Reversibility Of Membrane N-Glycome Of Hela Cells Upon Treatment With Epigenetic Inhibitors, Tomislav Horvat, Martina Dezeljin, Irma Redzic, Darko Barisic, Maja H. Bosnar, Gordan Lauc

Research outputs 2013

Glycans are essential regulators of protein function and are now in the focus of research in many physiological and pathophysiological processes. There are numerous modes of regulating their biosynthesis, including epigenetic mechanisms implicated in the expression of glyco-genes. Since N-glycans located at the cell membrane define intercellular communication as well as a cellular response to a given environment, we developed a method to preferentially analyze this fraction of glycans. The method is based on incorporation of living cells into polyacrylamide gels, partial denaturation of membrane proteins with 3 M urea and subsequent release of N-glycans with PNGase F followed by …

Glycosylation of immunoglobulin G (IgG) influences IgG effector function by modulating binding to Fc receptors. To identify genetic loci associated with IgG glycosylation, we quantitated N-linked IgG glycans using two approaches. After isolating IgG from human plasma, we performed 77 quantitative measurements of N-glycosylation using ultra-performance liquid chromatography (UPLC) in 2,247 individuals from four European discovery populations. In parallel, we measured IgG N-glycans using MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry (MS) in a replication cohort of 1,848 Europeans. Meta-analysis of genome-wide association study (GWAS) results identified 9 genome-wide significant loci (P,2.2761029) in the discovery analysis and two of the same loci (B4GALT1 and …

Pathology Associated With Aav Mediated Expression Of Beta Amyloid Or C100 In Adult Mouse Hippocampus And Cerebellum, Eleanor S. Drummond, Jill Muhling, Ralph Martins, Linda K. Wijaya, Erich M. Ehlert, Alan R. Harvey

Research outputs 2013

Accumulation of beta amyloid (Ab) in the brain is a primary feature of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) but the exact molecular mechanisms by which Ab exerts its toxic actions are not yet entirely clear. We documented pathological changes 3 and 6 months after localised injection of recombinant, bi-cistronic adeno-associated viral vectors (rAAV2) expressing human Ab40- GFP, Ab42-GFP, C100-GFP or C100V717F-GFP into the hippocampus and cerebellum of 8 week old male mice. Injection of all rAAV2 vectors resulted in wide-spread transduction within the hippocampus and cerebellum, as shown by expression of transgene mRNA and GFP protein. Despite the lack of accumulation of …

Variability In The Carbon Storage Of Seagrass Habitats And Its Implications For Global Estimates Of Blue Carbon Ecosystem Service, Paul Lavery, Miguel-Angel Mateo, Oscar Serrano, Mohammad Rozaimi Jan 2013

Variability In The Carbon Storage Of Seagrass Habitats And Its Implications For Global Estimates Of Blue Carbon Ecosystem Service, Paul Lavery, Miguel-Angel Mateo, Oscar Serrano, Mohammad Rozaimi

Research outputs 2013

The recent focus on carbon trading has intensified interest in ‘Blue Carbon’–carbon sequestered by coastal vegetated ecosystems, particularly seagrasses. Most information on seagrass carbon storage is derived from studies of a single species, Posidonia oceanica, from the Mediterranean Sea. We surveyed 17 Australian seagrass habitats to assess the variability in their sedimentary organic carbon (Corg) stocks. The habitats encompassed 10 species, in mono-specific or mixed meadows, depositional to exposed habitats and temperate to tropical habitats. There was an 18-fold difference in the Corg stock (1.09– 20.14 mg Corg cm23 for a temperate Posidonia sinuosa and a temperate, estuarine P. australis …

The Contribution Of Work-Integrated Learning To Undergraduate Employability Skill Outcomes, Denise Jackson Jan 2013

The Contribution Of Work-Integrated Learning To Undergraduate Employability Skill Outcomes, Denise Jackson

Research outputs 2013

WIL has attracted considerable attention as an instrument for enhancing professional practice and developing work-readiness in new graduates. It is widely considered as a point of difference in developing graduate employability by enhancing skill outcomes, such as team-work, communication, self-management and problem solving, employment prospects and student understanding of the world-of-work. This paper investigates the role of WIL in improving undergraduate employability skills; gauging its impact on a range of skills; and identifying variations in outcomes for certain demographic, study background and placement characteristics using survey data from 131 WIL students in an Australian university. Results indicate a significant improvement …

Exploring Ways To Improve Online Health News Stories, Trevor A. Cullen Jan 2013

Exploring Ways To Improve Online Health News Stories, Trevor A. Cullen

Research outputs 2013

For a long time, reporting health consisted largely of statistics on the number of deaths and cases of disease, or reporting on epidemiological data that affects people we do not know. While this is important for health officials, it is of little interest to audiences who are increasingly demanding information that is useful to their daily lives. And conserving one’s health is perhaps the most useful of all topics. Many have now added the internet to their personal health toolbox, helping them to gain a better understanding of an illness or medical condition. But how accurate and balanced is the …

Identity On The Line: The Meaning Of Aboriginal And Non-Aboriginal Youth Hanging Out On The Streets And Train Stations In The South-East Corridor Of Perth, Andrew Guilfoyle, Sasha Botsis

Research outputs 2013

Executive Summary

We performed a critical analysis on data originally collected from young people, service providers, and parents, contained in Save the Children’s Photovoice and Participatory Action Research projects.

We employed an interpretative phenomenological approach with thematic analysis examining participants’ ascribed meaning, personal experiences, and observations of youth ‘hanging out’ on the streets or trains in the South-East corridor of Perth.

Criminology and Identity themes emerged, and we drew attention to the merits of a positive, holistic view of youth, growing up in today’s society; for the development of social programs, future interventions, and participatory action research.

We identify several …

High-Frequency Stimulation Of Nucleus Accumbens Changes In Dopaminergic Reward Circuit, Na Yan, Ning Chen, Honghua Zhu, Jianguo Zhang, Moira Sim, Yu Ma, Wei Wang

Research outputs 2013

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the nucleus accumbens (NAc) is a potential remedial therapy for drug craving and relapse, but the mechanism is poorly understood. We investigated changes in neurotransmitter levels during high frequency stimulation (HFS) of the unilateral NAc on morphine-induced rats. Sixty adult Wistar rats were randomized into five groups: the control group (administration of saline), the morphine-only group (systematic administration of morphine without electrode implantation), the morphine-sham-stimulation group (systematic administration of morphine with electrode implantation but not given stimulation), the morphine-stimulation group (systematic administration of morphine with electrode implantation and stimulation) and the saline-stimulation group (administration of …

Using Research Informed Approaches To Strategic Hrm Teaching, Alan J. Coetzer, Helen B. Sitlington Jan 2013

Using Research Informed Approaches To Strategic Hrm Teaching, Alan J. Coetzer, Helen B. Sitlington

Research outputs 2013

This paper outlines research that was guided by the broad question: What teaching and learning (T&L) strategies should be employed in SHRM? This question was answered using data gathered in three focus groups involving T&L specialists, business strategy and HRM academics, and HRM practitioners. Through a process of successive focusing, potential T&L strategies were initially identified and then tested and refined in the focus groups. Drawing on literature and input from the participants, we contend that SHRM can be effectively taught through a combination of primarily problem-based and case-based approaches. We also argue that process worksheets are an effective method …

Skipping Against Hegemony: Where Are States Of Lightness In Contemporary Dance-Making?, Margaret J. Phillips Jan 2013

Skipping Against Hegemony: Where Are States Of Lightness In Contemporary Dance-Making?, Margaret J. Phillips

Research outputs 2013

Dance relies on physical ideas born out of human experience. Changes in what we “do” and “transmit” in the context of pedagogy should follow the shifting and informed perspectives of the time, reflecting scientific, sociological, and imaginative advancements and practices. One day, while a young girl skipped down a university pathway, that principle was brought into question. This innocent protagonist’s skipping provoked a search for explanations of the erasure of a complex “foundational” action from the grounds of adult knowledgeable behaviour. Could this dismissal of a physical idea bear any correspondences with a limited range of contemporary dance compositional modes …

Research outputs 2013

Fly-In Fly-Out (FIFO) employees in the mining industry in Western Australia have had high levels of turnover, resulting in high costs in recruitment, training and lost production. This research is seeking to understand the reasons for high turnover in this somewhat unusual group of employees. Whilst the research has utilised the more traditional approach to understanding labour turnover, that is that dissatisfaction with job or company and the availability of viable alternatives lead to intention to quit, preliminary results indicate that job embeddedness theory, may provide a better understanding of why FIFO workers choose to stay in their jobs. This …

Cytokine Levels And T Cell Apoptosis Associated With Cerebral Malaria Immunopathology During Plasmodium Berghei Anka Infection In A Mouse Model, Julius Ndirangu Mugweru Jan 2013

Cytokine Levels And T Cell Apoptosis Associated With Cerebral Malaria Immunopathology During Plasmodium Berghei Anka Infection In A Mouse Model, Julius Ndirangu Mugweru

All Master’s Theses

During the course of malaria infection, a range of pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines are produced by the host immune system. Successful recovery from malaria involves striking a balance between these counteracting cytokines. The cytokine imbalance contributes to pathological features but their exact levels have not been elucidated. The present study aimed at investigating the role played by circulating cytokines in pathophysiology of cerebral malaria. Using an experimental cerebral malaria (ECM) model, the profile of five serum cytokines was determined by employing Cytometric Bead Assay. Seventy-two BALB/c mice (7-9 week/old) were intraperitoneally inoculated with approximately 1 x 105 parasitisized red blood …

Analysis Of Farmers' Adoption Of Zero Grazing And Knowledge Of Cattle Reproductive Parameters In Western Kenya, Justine Nalunkuuma Jan 2013

Analysis Of Farmers' Adoption Of Zero Grazing And Knowledge Of Cattle Reproductive Parameters In Western Kenya, Justine Nalunkuuma

All Master’s Theses

Besides soil replenishment through manure application , the zero grazing production system also contributes towards smallholders' standards of living and poverty reduction. Its benefits are many and substantial; in western Kenya, the livestock farmers have adopted it. However, factors influencing its adoption are not known. It is also not certain whether the livestock farmers who practice zero grazing are knowledgeable of the cattle reproductive parameters or not which is key to zero grazing. Inadequate knowledge of the cattle reproductive parameters limits the productivity and profitability of the zero grazing dairy production system. This study determined factors influencing the adoption of …

Multinomial Regression In Insect Choice Studies: A Case Of Leaf Miner Parasitoids' Choices, Kelvin K. Gikonyo Jan 2013

Multinomial Regression In Insect Choice Studies: A Case Of Leaf Miner Parasitoids' Choices, Kelvin K. Gikonyo

All Master’s Theses

Researchers are often confronted with multinomial data in insect choice studies. Common choice models available to researchers for analysis of multinomial data include multinomial logit (MNL) and multinomial probit model (MNP). MNL relies on the Independence from Irrelevant Alternatives (IIA) assumption which is violated when choices are correlated resulting in overestimating the probability of selecting correlated alternatives. The more flexible MNP model relaxes IIA assumption and allows modelling correlated errors. Little evidence exists on the performance of multinomial logit and multinomial probit models on insect choice data. This study investigated the performance of the two models in terms of predictive …

Survival Analysis And Generalized Estimating Equations For Repeated Measures In Mosquito Dose-Response, Gabriel Otieno Okello Jan 2013

Survival Analysis And Generalized Estimating Equations For Repeated Measures In Mosquito Dose-Response, Gabriel Otieno Okello

All Master’s Theses

Dose-response studies in arthropod research usually involve observing and collecting successive information at different times on the same group of organisms (insects) exposed to different concentrations of stimulus such as botanical extracts. When successive observations are made on the same group of organisms at several concentrations over time the data becomes correlated. Correlated insect mortality data cannot be analyzed using Probit Analysis technique which is the usual way of analyzing data from bioassay experiments. In addition, when the speed of kill is of interest since mortality varies over time, estimating lethal time is the best. The objective of the study …

Evaluation Of 2-Butanone As A Substitute For Carbon Dioxide In Malaria Mosquito Attractants, Monicah M. Mburu Jan 2013

Evaluation Of 2-Butanone As A Substitute For Carbon Dioxide In Malaria Mosquito Attractants, Monicah M. Mburu

All Master’s Theses

Odor-baited traps (OBTs) are increasingly being considered for use in sampling, surveillance and control of malaria mosquitoes. Most odor baits contain carbon dioxide, which apparently enhances trap catches given its role as a mosquito activator. Unfortunately, organic CO2, which is the most locally amenable source of the gas, must be replaced after each experimental night. This precludes the application of carbon dioxide-based odor baits for prolonged area-wide use. This study explored the possibility of replacing organically-produced CO2 with 2-butanone in odor blends targeting malaria mosquitoes. Experiments were conducted under field and semi-field conditions in western Kenya. A fresh preparation of …

A Jurisdictional Perspective On New York Times V. Sullivan, Howard M. Wasserman Jan 2013

A Jurisdictional Perspective On New York Times V. Sullivan, Howard M. Wasserman

Faculty Publications

New York Times v. Sullivan, arguably the Supreme Court's most significant First Amendment decision, marks its fiftieth anniversary next year. Often overlooked in discussions of the case's impact on the freedom of speech and freedom of the press is that it arose from a complex puzzle of constitutional, statutory, and judge-made jurisdictional and procedural rules. These kept the case in hostile Alabama state courts for four years and a half-million-dollar judgment before the Times and its civil rights leader co-defendants finally could avail themselves of the structural protections of federal court and Article III judges. The case's outcome and …

If women outnumber men in graduate schools and are entering professional and other workplaces in unprecedented numbers, and if Title VII has aimed to eradicate workplace discrimination for almost fifty years, why are women still so woefully underrepresented at the highest levels of power, leadership, wealth, and prestige in the contemporary workplace? This Article is about abusive speech in the workplace. It explores how the expression of bias in the workplace has evolved and been shaped by anti-discrimination legislation and jurisprudence. It identifies a category of biased speech that eludes prosecution under Title VII. Moreover, this Article seeks to provide …

Reexamining The Relationship Between Financial Development And Economic Growth: The Case Of South Africa., Erick Kitenge

Research Papers

This paper aims to analyze the causality relationship between financial development and economic development. The pairwise Granger causality test was applied to data of South Africa, from 1966 to 2008, under Vector Error Correction Mechanism. Empirical analysis reveals two major facts. Firstly, the economic growth Granger causes the financial development. Secondly, there exist long-run and short-run causality relationships from economic growth to bank assets. A boom of economic activities seems to be the driving force behind the improvement of financial sectors. Consequently, policies aiming to foster the financial sector in South Africa should include the nature of increased economic activities.

Pre-Constitutional Law And Constitutions: Spanish Colonial Law And The Constitution Of Cádiz, M C. Mirow

Faculty Publications

This article contributes to the intellectual and legal history of this constitutional document. It also provides a close study of how pre-constitutional laws are employed in writing constitutions. It examines the way Spanish colonial law, known as "derecho indiano" in Spanish, was used in the process of drafting the Constitution and particularly the way these constitutional activities and provisions related to the Americas. The article asserts that this pre-constitutional law was used in three distinct ways: as general knowledge related to the Americas and their institutions; as a source for providing a particular answer to a specific legal question; and …
