Olivine Ca Content Measured By Icp-Oes To Estimate P-T, Bradley Benavides
Olivine Ca Content Measured By Icp-Oes To Estimate P-T, Bradley Benavides
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Ca is a trace element in olivine and its concentration is pressure and temperature dependent, providing a rare opportunity to estimate pressure conditions at which mantle-derived rocks (xenoliths) last equilibrated. This P-T dependence has previously been calibrated for mantle xenoliths, and we applied this technique to samples from Jasper Seamount (Jasper Seamount), an oceanic intraplate volcano (OIV) off the coast of the Baja California Peninsula of Mexico. Preliminary compositions for xenoliths from this location appear to define a magmatic plumbing system that features magma storage near the bottom of the crust. A more detailed analysis of the samples is required …
Reduction Of Onu Buffering For Pon/Vdsl Hybrid Access Networks, Elliott Ivan Gurrola
Reduction Of Onu Buffering For Pon/Vdsl Hybrid Access Networks, Elliott Ivan Gurrola
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Today's growing internet traffic requires service providers to offer customers faster transmission rates. To keep up with such high transmission rates, service providers need to deploy fiber optical networks. However, due to the high cost involved in deploying the fiber media, this may not prove to be a feasible solution. Instead, service providers can deploy fiber media up to a distribution point, such as a customer's block, and continue the last few hundred feet using the already deployed legacy copper wire media.
In our study we investigate downstream/upstream transmission coordination for passive optical network (PON) / Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) …

Determination Of The Effects Of Zno And Ceo2 Nanoparticles In Mesquite (Prosopis Juliflora) And Soybean (Glycine Max): Synchrotron And Spectroscopic Approaches, Jose Angel Hernandez Viezcas
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The rapid growth of nanotechnology is exposing the environment to abnormal concentrations of engineered nanoparticles (NPs). There is concern about the unknown consequences of NPs on the environment and human health. This Dissertation has relied significantly on Synchrotron and other spectroscopic techniques to give insights on the effects, speciation and distribution of two metal oxide nanoparticles (ZnO, CeO2) on two plant species (Mesquite and Soybean). We evaluated the effects of ZnO (10 nm) and CeO2 (8 nm) NPs on a plant species native to the semi-arid regions of North America, Mesquite (Prosopis juliflora velutina). Mesquite plants grown in hydroponic culture …

Structural, Optical And Electrical Properties Of Yttrium-Doped Hafnium Oxide Nanocrystalline Thin Films, Abhilash Kongu
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Hafnium oxide (HfO2) has emerged as the most promising high-k dielectric for Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor (MOS) devices and has been highlighted as the most suitable dielectric materials to replace silicon oxide because of its comprehensive performance. In the present research, yttrium-doped HfO2 (YDH) thin films were fabricated using RF magnetron sputter deposition onto Si (100) and quartz with a variable thickness. Cross-sectional scanning electron microscopy coupled with Filmetrics revealed that film thickness values range from 700 A° to 7500 A°. Electrical properties such as AC Resistivity and current-voltage (I-V) characteristics of YDH films were studied. YDH films that were relatively thin (<1500 A°) crystallized in monoclinic phase while thicker films crystallized in cubic phase. The band gap (Eg) of the films was calculated from the optical measurements. The band gap was found to be ∼5.60 eV for monoclinic while it is ∼6.05 eV for cubic phase of YDH films. Frequency dependence of the electrical resistivity (ρac) and the total conductivity of the films were measured. Resistivity decreased (by three orders of magnitude) with increasing frequency from 100 Hz to 1 MHz, attributed due to the hopping mechanism in YDH films. Whereas, while ρac∼1Ω-m at low frequencies (100 Hz), it decreased to ∼ 104 Ω-cm at higher frequencies (1 MHz). Aluminum (Al) metal electrodes were deposited to fabricate a thin film capacitor with YDH layer as dielectric film thereby employing Al-YDH-Si capacitor structure. The results indicate that the capacitance of the films decrease with increasing film thickness. A detailed analysis of the electrical characteristics of YDH films is presented.

Toward New Data And Information Management Solutions For Data-Intensive Ecological Research, Christine Marie Laney
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Ecosystem health is deteriorating in many parts of the world due to direct and indirect anthropogenic pressures. Generating accurate, useful, and impactful models of past, current, and future states of ecosystem structure and function is a complex endeavor that often requires vast amounts of data from multiple sources and knowledge from collaborating researchers. Ecological data collection has improved rapidly over the past few decades due to the development, innovation, and large scale deployment of automated sensors, which are capable of measuring a gamut of ecosystem properties over broad spatiotemporal scales. Although complex ecosystem models and analyses are increasingly parameterized with …
The Effects Of Charismatic Leadership And Religion On Decision Making, Brandt A. Smith
The Effects Of Charismatic Leadership And Religion On Decision Making, Brandt A. Smith
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
We examined the effects of leadership and religious priming on decision-making in a resource allocation task involving a decision between funding hydro-fracture mining research and/or solar energy research. We found strong main effects for charismatic v. non-charismatic leadership, and for religious priming v. non-religious priming. Further, we found a significant interaction in that the effects of religious priming on economic decision-making in a resource allocation task was stronger in the non-charismatic condition than in the charismatic condition. Implications of this research and recommendations for future studies are discussed.
Estimating Variations In Locking Depth For The Mojave Segment Of The San Andreas Fault Over The Past 1500 Years From Paleoseismic Stress Drop, Teira Solis
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The most fundamental model for characterizing earthquake occurrence [Reid, 1910] assumes a constant stress accumulation rate on a locked fault segment, which eventually fails at a threshold stress level. While this model provides a conceptual framework for investigating the conditions that prepare a fault for failure, there is little evidence that faults rupture periodically or at a uniform threshold stress. Moreover, this model fails to explain the large differences in earthquake recurrence intervals and paleoseismic slip for segments of major fault systems: why do some faults rupture on the order of 10's of years, while others require 100's of years …
Political Corruption: Accountability And Party System Institutionalization, Susan Achury
Political Corruption: Accountability And Party System Institutionalization, Susan Achury
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Providing a definition built on the agency relationship between voters and public officials, this study presents an institutional approach to the causes of political corruption. I argue that higher levels of political party institutionalization reduce political corruption. Institutionalized political party systems help to overcome collective problems among voters within democracies. By increasing levels of accountability, institutionalized political party systems alter public officials' incentives towards a cleaner exercise of the public power. Focusing on different strategies adopted by political parties, I analyze the effectiveness of the constraints imposed on public officials' corrupt behavior within democracies. On the one hand, institutionalization of …

Attention To Explicit And Implicit Contrast In Verb Learning, Jane B. Childers, Amy Hirshkowitz, Kristin Benavides
Attention To Explicit And Implicit Contrast In Verb Learning, Jane B. Childers, Amy Hirshkowitz, Kristin Benavides
Psychology Faculty Research
Contrast information could be useful for verb learning, but few studies have examined children's ability to use this type of information. Contrast may be useful when children are told explicitly that different verbs apply, or when they hear two different verbs in a single context. Three studies examine children's attention to different types of contrast as they learn new verbs. Study 1 shows that 3 ½-year-olds can use both implicit contrast (“I'm meeking it. I'm koobing it.”) and explicit contrast (“I'm meeking it. I'm not meeking it.”) when learning a new verb, while a control group's responses did not differ …
Determinants Of Infant Feeding Practices Of Hiv-Positive And Hiv-Negative Mothers In Pretoria, South Africa, Keith Ellis
Determinants Of Infant Feeding Practices Of Hiv-Positive And Hiv-Negative Mothers In Pretoria, South Africa, Keith Ellis
Yale School of Nursing Digital Theses
Background: Exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) has been shown to result in lowered risk of postnatal vertical HIV transmission compared to mixed breastfeeding (Mixed BF). Early breastfeeding cessation, or not breastfeeding at all, is associated with an increase in morbidity and mortality amongst both HIV-exposed and HIV-unexposed infants. The South African tradition of giving nutritive and non-nutritive foods to breastfeeding infants in the first few months of life is unique among African nations and warrants closer examination to identify maternal determinants that lead to early mixed feeding practices, commonly used supplemental foods/liquids, the timing of supplemental food introduction, and maternal perceptions of …

Performance Metrics For Network Intrusion Systems, Christopher John Tucker
Performance Metrics For Network Intrusion Systems, Christopher John Tucker
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses
Intrusion systems have been the subject of considerable research during the past 33 years, since the original work of Anderson. Much has been published attempting to improve their performance using advanced data processing techniques including neural nets, statistical pattern recognition and genetic algorithms. Whilst some significant improvements have been achieved they are often the result of assumptions that are difficult to justify and comparing performance between different research groups is difficult. The thesis develops a new approach to defining performance focussed on comparing intrusion systems and technologies. A new taxonomy is proposed in which the type of output and the …

Automated detection of seizures is still a challenging problem. This study presents an approach to detect seizure segments in Laplacian electroencephalography (tEEG) recorded from rats using the tripolar concentric ring electrode (TCRE) configuration. Three features, namely, median absolute deviation, approximate entropy, and maximum singular value were calculated and used as inputs into two different classifiers: support vector machines and adaptive boosting. The relative performance of the extracted features on TCRE tEEG was examined. Results are obtained with an overall accuracy between 84.81 and 96.51%. In addition to using TCRE tEEG data, the seizure detection algorithm was also applied to the …

Exploring The Relationship Between Adventist Hospital Board Chair Leadership Behaviors And Effectiveness, Anthony M. Stahl
Exploring The Relationship Between Adventist Hospital Board Chair Leadership Behaviors And Effectiveness, Anthony M. Stahl
Dissertations
Problem and Purpose. There is a lack of empirical research regarding the leadership behaviors that predict an effective community hospital board chair. Researchers indicate that an effective organization normally has a well-led board. However, the chair role has been largely neglected in the research of board functions and operations. With many hospitals facing reorganization or closing, it is important to understand and identify effective chair behaviors. Thus, the purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between hospital chair leadership behaviors and effectiveness, and the relationship of effective chairs to effective hospitals.
Method. This study used an ex post …

Historically, maritime organizations seeking accurate shipboard positioning have relied upon some form of differential GNSS, such as DGPS, WAAS, or EGNOS, to improve the accuracy and integrity of the GPS. Groundbased augmentation systems, such as DGPS, broadcast corrections to the GPS signal from geographically distributed terrestrial stations, often called beacons. Specifically, pseudorange corrections for the GPS L1 C/A signal are computed at each reference site, then broadcast in the nearby geographic area using a medium frequency (approximately 300 kHz) communications link. The user then adds these corrections onto their measured pseudoranges before implementing a position solution algorithm. Within the United …

Analysis Of L1c Acquisition By Combining Pilot And Data Components Over Multiple Code Periods, Kelly C. Seals, William R. Michalson, Peter F. Swaszek, Richard J. Hartnett
Electrical, Computer, and Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications
One of the new features of modern GNSS signals is that they generally have a pilot component and data component. A unique aspect of the GPS L1C signal is that it has an unequal power split between the pilot and data components. Various papers have pro- posed channel combining techniques to acquire modern GNSS signals using both components. In this paper, the optimal detector for GPS L1C acquisition over multiple code periods without knowledge of the navigation data or overlay code phase is derived. A variation of semi-coherent integration technique (non- coherently combining the 10 msec coherent combinations) that accounts …

GPS spoofing is a hot topic of late; technical discussions vary widely based upon the assumed capabilities and a priori knowledge of the spoofer. For a single GPS receiver, various methods to detect a spoofing event have been proposed in the literature. These range from simple ideas (e.g. monitoring the power levels of the GPS signals) to more complex concepts (e.g. looking for vestigial peaks in the correlator outputs) to the comparison to non- GPS signals (e.g. an IMU). Much of this prior work has been on the conceptual level with limited experimentation; little appears to have been done to …

Relentless Engagement With State Educational Policy Reform: Collaborating To Change The Writing Placement Conversation, Heidi Estrem, Dawn Shepherd, Lloyd Duman
Student Articles, Chapters, Presentations, Learning Objects
This article describes the educational reform efforts surrounding writing placement in one state context. We propose that placement offers a particularly useful engagement point because it is often controlled by state-level policies and it directly impacts the lived experience of first-year college students. To document how we worked across institutions in our state, we describe a series of events that occurred over several years and that fostered collaborative exchanges. Then, we explore the challenges and opportunities afforded by our long-term engagement with policymakers. Ultimately, we propose strategies that writing program administrators might consider as they become engaged with state-level higher …
Machiavelli's People And Shakespeare's Prophet: The Early Modern Afterlife Of Caius Martius Coriolanus, Peter Iver Kaufman
Machiavelli's People And Shakespeare's Prophet: The Early Modern Afterlife Of Caius Martius Coriolanus, Peter Iver Kaufman
Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications
Both Machiavelli and Shakespeare were drawn to Livy's and Plutarch's stories of the legendary field commander turned political inept, Caius Martius, who was honored with the name Coriolanus after sacking the city of Corioles. The sixteenth-century ‘coriolanists’ are usually paired as advocates of participatory regimes and said to have used Coriolanus's virulent opposition to power-sharing in early republican Rome as an occasion to put plebeian interests in a favorable light. This article objects to that characterization, distinguishing Machiavelli's deployment of Coriolanus in his Principe and Discorsi from Shakespeare's depiction of Coriolanus and his critics on stage. The essay that follows …

ABSTRACT
Falls are the fifth leading cause of death for persons over the age of 55 (CDC, 2010). However, not all falls result in death. In 2006, 10.5% or 2.1 million visits to the emergency room were the result of older adults falling. Non-fatal falls have long-term effects that impact a person's well-being physically, financially, and emotionally. It is estimated that health care costs of non-fatal falls is expected to reach $54.9 billion by 2020 (Englander, Hodson & Terregrossa, 1996). Intrinsic and extrinsic fall risk factors have been identified for persons over the age of 65. Intrinsic fall risk factors …
