Illinois Secondary Agriculture Teachers' Perception Of Critical Development Of Undergraduate Experiences, Alicia Jo Gullidge

Theses and Dissertations

The goal of this study is to provide the leadership of Illinois Agricultural Education with an understanding of what practicing teachers feel were the most important experiences in their pre-service teacher education program that ensured they were prepared for the classroom. Curbing Executive Compensation: A New Tax Scheme, Tristen Cohen Nov 2013

Curbing Executive Compensation: A New Tax Scheme, Tristen Cohen

Legislation and Policy Brief

In 1916, Henry Ford faced a legal battle with shareholders in Ford Motor Company (including, most notably, the Dodge brothers) over a plan to end the company’s practice of giving special dividends. The Dodge brothers wanted to force the company to continue giving special dividends and Ford wanted to end the practice in order to use the cash to expand operations. Ford, who was the President of the company, said his motivation for this shift was “to employ still more men, to spread the benefits of this industrial system to the greatest possible number, to help them build up their …

Uncharted Waters: How Hornbeck Offshore Services, Llc V. Salazar Highlights Core Problems With Judicial Oversight Of Agency Behavior, Kyle G. Bates

Legislation and Policy Brief

Following the Deepwater Horizon oil spill of April 20, 2010, oil companies filed several suits against the Department of the Interior (DOI or Interior) for various dimensions of alleged government misconduct surrounding attempts to regulate private offshore drilling in the Gulf of Mexico. Hornbeck Offshore Services, LLC v. Salazar is one of several such cases challenging the DOI’s response, which included a May 2010 moratorium halting offshore drilling in the Gulf of Mexico after the “catastrophic” Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Several companies engaged in offshore drilling challenged DOI’s moratorium in federal district court on June 7, 2010. Judge Feldman of …

Training New Executive Mba Faculty And Staff: A Case Approach, Daniel M. Gropper Nov 2013

Training New Executive Mba Faculty And Staff: A Case Approach, Daniel M. Gropper

Journal of Executive Education

Teaching new faculty and staff how to handle Executive MBA students can be an interesting challenge. Even skilled and experienced educators may not be prepared to translate what has worked well for them with other student groups to the EMBA world.

It is generally well established that case teaching can be an effective way to teach Executive level students (Barnes, et. al. 2001). They engage in active learning, and often can bring their experiences to bear on issues in a case that others did not see.

Epiphany: A Story Of Improving Teaching Effectiveness In An Executive Mba Economics Course, Anthony J. Mento, John Larson Nov 2013

Epiphany: A Story Of Improving Teaching Effectiveness In An Executive Mba Economics Course, Anthony J. Mento, John Larson

Journal of Executive Education

This paper discusses the reengineering of an executive MBA economics principles course. Traditional lecture-test structure was changed to a seminar style. Events leading to this change are described. Many years of evaluation results are presented to quantitatively and qualitatively depict the dramatic impacts of the changes. Learning theories that help explain the effects are then discussed, especially as they may help others redesign their teaching methodologies. Non-theoretic learning strategies for students and seven research-based principles for more effective teaching are also presented to help explain the results achieved.

Fuller And Godel: Prophets Against The Evils Of Positivism: How The Natural Law Is Necessary To Provide Legal Meaning And Consistency, Henry James Garon Nov 2013

Fuller And Godel: Prophets Against The Evils Of Positivism: How The Natural Law Is Necessary To Provide Legal Meaning And Consistency, Henry James Garon

LLM Theses

Gödel showed that formal systems which discuss natural numbers cannot be complete or prove their own consistency. Incompleteness in this sense is limited to formal systems, and so is not applicable to law by it own terms.

Looking to the philosophy behind the Incompleteness Theorem, Gödel intended to show that positivism was a bankrupt world-view, and this resonates strongly with Lon Fuller. Fuller is analogous to Gödel in his condemnation of the positivist philosophy because he showed that a system of rules, by itself, was not capable of rendering judgments. A legal system is dependent upon an external morality, but …

Pediatrics Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Frequent painful vaso-occlusive crises (VOCs) were associated with mortality in the Cooperative Study of Sickle Cell Disease (CSSCD) over twenty years ago. Modern therapies for sickle cell anemia (SCA) like hydroxyurea are believed to have improved overall patient survival. The current study sought to determine the relevance of the association between more frequent VOCs and death and its relative impact upon overall mortality compared to other known risk factors in a contemporary adult SCA cohort.

METHODS: Two hundred sixty four SCA adults were assigned into two groups based on patient reported outcomes for emergency department (ED) visits or hospitalizations …

Who Benefits From Public Health Spending And How Long Does It Take: Estimating Community-Specific Spending Effects, Glen P. Mays Nov 2013

Who Benefits From Public Health Spending And How Long Does It Take: Estimating Community-Specific Spending Effects, Glen P. Mays

Health Management and Policy Presentations

Objectives: Spending on public health and prevention strategies varies widely across states and communities. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 (ACA) authorized the largest expansion in federal public health spending in decades, with the goals of improving population health and helping to moderate growth in medical care spending. To produce evidence needed to inform these investments, this study (1) estimates the effects of public health spending patterns within communities on preventable mortality and subsequent medical care spending; and (2) uses the methods of local instrumental variables developed by Heckman and Vytlacil and Basu to estimate how the …

A Novel Defense Mechanism Against Web Crawler Intrusion, Alireza Aghamohammadi Nov 2013

A Novel Defense Mechanism Against Web Crawler Intrusion, Alireza Aghamohammadi

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Web robots also known as crawlers or spiders are used by search engines, hackers and spammers to gather information about web pages. Timely detection and prevention of unwanted crawlers increases privacy and security of websites. In this research, a novel method to identify web crawlers is proposed to prevent unwanted crawler to access websites. The proposed method suggests a five-factor identification process to detect unwanted crawlers. This study provides the pretest and posttest results along with a systematic evaluation of web pages with the proposed identification technique versus web pages without the proposed identification process. An experiment was performed with …
