Advanced composite materials are known as important engineering materials in industry. Unlike structural metals which are homogeneous and isotropic, composites are inherently inhomogeneous and anisotropic which leads to further difficulty in damage tolerance design. The predictive capabilities of existing models have met with limited success because they typically cannot account for multiple damage evolution and their coupling. Consequently, current composite design is heavily dependent upon lengthy and costly test programs and empirical design methods. There is an urgent need for efficient numerical tools that are capable of analyzing the progressive failure caused by nonlinearly coupled, multiple damage evolution in composite …
Synthesis And Characterization Of High Nuclearity Bimetallic Group 8-Group 10 Transition Metal Cluster Complexes, Sumit Saha
Open Access Dissertations
In past years bimetallic nanoparticle catalysts have been shown to exhibit superior catalytic properties, due to the presence of different metals such that one metal performs a certain role in a catalytic cycle and the other performs another function. Our goal was to synthesize bimetallic cluster complexes containing cheap metals for the application in heterogeneous catalysis. We have reported the reaction of Fe5(C)(CO)15 with Ni(COD)2, in acetonitrile solvent to afford the nickel-iron complex NiFe5(C)(NCMe)(CO)15. In addition, some chemistry with this compound was studied which gave new Fe-Ni carbide clusters with varying Fe-Ni ratios. Similar chemistry was observed with the reaction …

Mapping the chromosomal locations of transcription factors, nucleosomes, histone modifications, chromatin remodeling enzymes, chaperones, and polymerases is one of the key tasks of modern biology, as evidenced by the Encyclopedia of DNA Elements (ENCODE) Project. To this end, chromatin immunoprecipitation followed by high-throughput sequencing (ChIP-seq) is the standard methodology. Mapping such protein-DNA interactions in vivo using ChIP-seq presents multiple challenges not only in sample preparation and sequencing but also for computational analysis. Here, we present step-by-step guidelines for the computational analysis of ChIP-seq data. We address all the major steps in the analysis of ChIP-seq data: sequencing depth selection, quality …

Background: Rotavirus (RV) nonstructural protein 4 (NSP4) is the first described viral enterotoxin, which induces early secretory diarrhea in neonatal rodents. Our previous data show a direct interaction between RV NSP4 and the structural protein of caveolae, caveolin-1 (cav-1), in yeast and mammalian cells. The binding site of cav-1 mapped to the NSP4 amphipathic helix, and led us to examine which helical face was responsible for the interaction.
Methods: A panel of NSP4 mutants were prepared and tested for binding to cav-1 by yeast two hybrid and direct binding assays. The charged residues of the NSP4 amphipathic helix were changed …

Trade Frictions And Market Access Of Developing Countries: A Product-Level Empirical Investigation, Eugene Bempong-Nyantakyi, Steven Husted, Shuichiro Nishioka
Economics Faculty Working Papers Series
This paper examines the effects of trade frictions, including tariffs and a variety of factors that raise trade costs, on export market access at the product level and, in particular, the role these frictions have on the ability of developing countries to access world markets. We find that a variety of trade frictions do serve to limit market access. We find distance and efficiency in trade facilitation are significant determinants of the probability of success in entering foreign markets. We examine whether there are any systematic development-related biases from these frictions that further limit market access for exporters from developing …

Purpose in life predicts both health and longevity suggesting that the ability to find meaning from life’s experiences, especially when confronting life’s challenges, may be a mechanism underlying resilience. Having purpose in life may motivate reframing stressful situations to deal with them more productively, thereby facilitating recovery from stress and trauma. In turn, enhanced ability to recover from negative events may allow a person to achieve or maintain a feeling of greater purpose in life over time. In a large sample of adults (aged 36-84 years) from the MIDUS study (Midlife in the U.S., http://www.midus.wisc.edu/), we tested whether purpose in …

Genetic analysis was studied in a 5 × 5 diallel cross following Hayman's diallel analysis approach to obtain additive and dominance components of genetic variance using a mature embryo culture protocol. Different concentrations of NaCl at 5 and 10 g L-1 were added to each medium. Callus fresh weight (g), shoot length (cm), root length (cm), proline (μg g-1), sodium (mg g-1 and potassium (mg g-1) content were determined. Also, screening for non-water-soluble protein polymorphism was carried out using leaves derived via callus culture and analysis using SDS-PAGE. Results on the genetic behaviour for previously traits, indicating the differences among …

There is increasing recognition that stochasticity involved in gene regulatory processes may help cells enhance the signal or synchronize expression for a group of genes. Thus the validity of the traditional deterministic approach to modeling the foregoing processes cannot be without exception. In this study, we identify a frequently encountered situation, i.e., the biofilm, which has in the past been persistently investigated with intracellular deterministic models in the literature. We show in this paper circumstances in which use of the intracellular deterministic model appears distinctly inappropriate. In Enterococcus faecalis, the horizontal gene transfer of plasmid spreads drug resistance. The induction …

Improving Deaf Accessibility To Web-Based Multimedia, Brent N. Shiver
College of Computing and Digital Media Dissertations
Internet technologies have expanded rapidly over the past two decades, making information of all sorts more readily available. Not only are they more cost-effective than traditional media, these new media have contributed to quality and convenience. However, proliferation of video and audio media on the internet creates an inadvertent disadvantage for deaf Internet users. Despite technological and legislative milestones in recent decades in making television and movies more accessible, there has been little progress with online access. A major obstacle to providing captions for internet media is the high cost of captioning and transcribing services.

Little is known about the fate of polybrominated diphenylethers (PBDEs) across the Oceans. Air and water were sampled using both active and passive polyethylene samplers on an east-west transect across the tropical Atlantic Ocean in 2009 and analyzed for PBDEs. Typical particle-bound concentrations of PBDEs in the surface water were low, atL(-1). Truly dissolved concentrations from passive samplers were ∼0.5 pg L(-1) for BDE 47 and around 0.1 pg L(-1) for BDEs 28, 99, and 100 (results from active samples were compromised). In the atmosphere, particle-bound BDE 209 dominated overall concentrations (median 1.2 pg m(-3)), followed by BDE 99 (0.13 …
