Personal Genomics: Good, Evil, Or Both?, Emily Schmitt
CAHSS Intellectual Conversations
With the increasing availability of personal genomic testing, there have been warnings that the results may lead to discrimination by insurance companies, employers, or the community. In addition, some individuals fear potential identity theft and loss of personal autonomy, despite the benefits of discovering potential genetic risks and possibilities of more-focused treatments. This lecture will examine whether personal genomics is good, evil, or both.

To study the effects of transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGF-β1) on fibrosis and failure of regeneration of skeletal muscles, we generated a tet-repressible muscle-specific TGF-β1transgenic mouse in which expression of TGF-β1 is controlled by oral doxycycline. The mice developed muscle weakness and atrophy after TGF-β1 over-expression. We defined the group of mice that showed phenotype within 2 weeks as early onset (EO) and the rest as late onset (LO), which allowed us to further examine phenotypic differences between the groups. While only mice in the EO group showed significant muscle weakness, pathological changes including endomysial fibrosis and smaller …

Staphylococcus aureus clonal complex 398 (CC398) isolates cluster into two distinct phylogenetic clades based on single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) revealing a basal human clade and a more derived livestock clade. The scn and tet(M) genes are strongly associated with the human and the livestock clade, respectively, due to loss and acquisition of mobile genetic elements. We present canonical single-nucleotide polymorphism (canSNP) assays that differentiate the two major host-associated S. aureus CC398 clades and a duplex PCR assay for detection of scn and tet(M). The canSNP assays correctly placed 88 S. aureusCC398 isolates from a reference collection into …

How Are The Educational Institutes Of Ireland Embracing The Paradigm Shift Towards Bim?, Michael Mcdonald, Stephen Donohoe
How Are The Educational Institutes Of Ireland Embracing The Paradigm Shift Towards Bim?, Michael Mcdonald, Stephen Donohoe
Conference papers
Abstract ̶ The main objective of this paper is to evaluate how Building Information Modelling (BIM) is being implemented and embraced within Higher Education. The authors intend to examine the current delivery and aspirations of the sector.
As the Irish economy faces several more years of austerity, every opportunity must be seized to make design more efficient in Architecture, Engineering and Construction. Higher Educational Institutes must respond to ensure that graduates have the skill set to support this. This paper will examine how these institutions need to migrate away from the traditional iterative design approach/process to a more collaborative holistic …

A Balanced Literacy Approach To The Classroom, Kayleigh M. Siaulys Mrs.
A Balanced Literacy Approach To The Classroom, Kayleigh M. Siaulys Mrs.
Senior Honors Theses
In recent years, educators and researchers have become conflicted and outwardly concerned over low language arts test scores. Students from various backgrounds with different learning styles are not reaching literacy and language arts goals of the 21st century. To fix this present conflict, a new system has been formulated, officially known as the balanced literacy approach. This system incorporates all necessary elements to learn the English language appropriately by combining two or more approaches into the curriculum. Using these various approaches collectively, students will have the opportunity to learn the structure of the English language and will receive instruction …

We calculated magnetic exchange constants and magnetocaloric properties of Ni2Mn1-xCuxGa Heusler alloys by ab initio and Monte Carlo methods. The ab initio study of the influence of the Cu excess x on the strength of magnetic interactions revealed that Cu weakens Mn-Ni interaction and has a complex impact on the Mn-Mn interactions. Theoretically calculated magnetic phase diagram of Ni2Mn1-xCuxGa is in a good agreement with available experimental data. Calculated by the Monte Carlo method the isothermal magnetic entropy change Δ S m a g in a Ni2Mn0.75Cu0.25Ga alloy is significantly smaller around the coupled magnetostructural phase transition temperature than the …
