Computers are getting faster, and as they do, computer chips are getting smaller. Photolithography is a process used to design nanoscale patterns on a computer chip. In photolithography, the image of a circuit pattern is transferred from a mask to the semiconductor wafer. This is accomplished by exposing the mask to light and then reflecting the mask’s image through a series of image-reducing multilayer mirrors. These mirrors focus the reduced circuit pattern on to the semiconductor wafer. The wavelength of light incident on the mask determines the size of the resolvable features on the wafer. It has been predicted that …
Rule Of Law And Individualism In Plato’S Political Philosophy, Brett V. Benson, Dr. Noel B. Reynolds
Rule Of Law And Individualism In Plato’S Political Philosophy, Brett V. Benson, Dr. Noel B. Reynolds
Journal of Undergraduate Research
There is a popular strain of Platonic scholarship that has accused Plato of being imprudently idealistic in his political philosophy. These scholars point to Plato’s Republic as evidence for their criticisms, claiming that in the Republic Plato advocates a social ideal in which the common good is encouraged over the value of the individual. According to these critics, Plato distrusts the ability of the many to manage themselves and, therefore, proposes an ideal city wherein the philosopher elite would direct the choices and actions of the many for the common good. Thus described, Plato’s ideal is nothing short of a …

Advertising And Consumer Awareness, Garron K. Belnap, Dr. Dan Stout
Journal of Undergraduate Research
In order to learn more about the differences between the perceived effects and the actual effectiveness of advertising, which is rampant in the media today, a survey of 77 human subjects was conducted. The only qualification of subjects was the number of hours of television he or she watches in a week. I ignored all other demographics such as age, gender, and race.

Medicalization Of Female Beauty: A Content Analysis Of Cosmetic Procedures, Ashley L. Merianos, Rebecca A. Vidourek, Keith K. King
The Qualitative Report
Over the past decade, cosmetic procedures have significantly increased in options available for females to achieve the American cultural standards of beauty. The purpose of this study is to conduct a content analysis of brochures and to observe what cosmetic procedures are made available to female customers from plastic surgery centers, and also to examine the medical and therapeutic framing techniques used to encourage females to undergo cosmetic procedures. Three plastic surgery centers (overall response rate= 60%) located in one metropolitan area served as participants for this study. The researcher observed the locations and collected all brochures made available. Twenty …

Participation In The Digital Public: New Media Art As Online Community, Vaughn Garland
Participation In The Digital Public: New Media Art As Online Community, Vaughn Garland
Theses and Dissertations
Participation in The Digital Public: New Media Art as Online Community examines community online art projects— works of art produced and orchestrated by artists who employ the interconnected and participatory nature of the Internet. Garland contends, in part through a reevaluation of a statement made by artist Nam June Paik concerning a radio performance by John Cage, that community online art projects exist as the newest example of new media art because of a utilization and implementation of established and functioning technology. Through the application of Internet technology, contemporary artists, along with their collaborators and spectators, have the potential to …
Strategic Alignment Map: The Ongoing Development Of A Program Management Tool, Paul Jensen, Roberta Jannsen, Thomas L. Zeller, Enrique R. Venta
Strategic Alignment Map: The Ongoing Development Of A Program Management Tool, Paul Jensen, Roberta Jannsen, Thomas L. Zeller, Enrique R. Venta
Journal of Executive Education
This article explains the development and continuous modification of a tool that can be used to improve both participant experience and faculty performance in Executive Education programs. This tool is the Strategy Alignment Map (SAM). Participants that use the SAM create a document that summarizes 1) their strategic purpose for attending a program, 2) specific learning outcomes and how they align with their strategic purpose, and 3) action steps for implementing the learning. Executive Education, faculty and the Dean all benefit in different ways from this tool that improves participant educational experiences.

Saint Joseph’s University’s Executive MBA Program, which began in 1990, is an innovative graduate degree program for experienced managers and emerging business leaders. The program provides a challenging, interactive learning environment to help working professionals realize their full leadership potential and prepare for the challenges of senior management positions. This non-traditional program encourages students to risk, probe and solve problems in a multi-task format.
Teaching Business Ethics At A Distance, William I. Sauser Jr.
Teaching Business Ethics At A Distance, William I. Sauser Jr.
Journal of Executive Education
Without question “business ethics” is one of the hot topics of the day. Over the past months we have seen business after business charged with improper practices that violate commonly-accepted ethical norms. This has led to a loss of confidence in corporate management, and has had severe economic consequences. From many quarters business educators have heard the call to put more emphasis on ethical practices in their business courses and curricula. This paper describes an innovative method used to teach business ethics to Executive MBA students using distance education methodology. Now in its second year of inclusion within the curriculum …

Spectral Constraints On The Formation Mechanism Of Recurring Slope Lineae, Lujendra Ojha, James J. Wray, Scott L. Murchie, Alfred S. Mcewen, Michael J. Wolff, Suniti Karunatillake
Spectral Constraints On The Formation Mechanism Of Recurring Slope Lineae, Lujendra Ojha, James J. Wray, Scott L. Murchie, Alfred S. Mcewen, Michael J. Wolff, Suniti Karunatillake
Faculty Publications
Recurring slope lineae (RSL) exhibit multiple lines of evidence for a wet origin. In the southern midlatitudes, they form on steep, equator-facing slopes that are warm during southern summer. The formation temperature, seasonality, and other geomorphic characteristics are suggestive of water-related formation, perhaps dense brines. We examined Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars images of all confirmed RSL sites from the southern midlatitudes and the equatorial region to understand the composition of RSL and/or RSL-associated deposits. We did not detect any spectral signature attributable to water; however, a distinct and consistent spectral signature is observed at most sites, indicating enhanced …

Dartmouth Scholarship
Background: Limited data exist on the contribution of dietary sources of arsenic to an individual's total exposure, particularly in populations with exposure via drinking water. Here, the association between diet and toenail arsenic concentrations (a long-term biomarker of exposure) was evaluated for individuals with measured household tap water arsenic. Foods known to be high in arsenic, including rice and seafood, were of particular interest.
Methods: Associations between toenail arsenic and consumption of 120 individual diet items were quantified using general linear models that also accounted for household tap water arsenic and potentially confounding factors (e.g., age, caloric intake, sex, smoking) …

Hierarchical Decomposition Of U.S. Personal Consumption Expenditure: 1984-1991 And 2000-2006, Steven D. Silver

We conceptualize structure in personal consumption by explicitly defining categorizations of goods and services that consumers typically make in defining and organizing these objectives in their heuristics. Results from estimation of an Almost Ideal (AI) Demand System in each of two study periods generally support the structural differentiation of consumption goods.
Judgment Day For Fraud-On-The-Market?: Reflections On Amgen And The Second Coming Of Halliburton, Donald C. Langevoort
Judgment Day For Fraud-On-The-Market?: Reflections On Amgen And The Second Coming Of Halliburton, Donald C. Langevoort
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
In November 2013, the Supreme Court granted certiorari in the Halliburton litigation to reconsider, and perhaps overrule, its seminal decision in Basic Inc. v. Levinson. Basic legitimated the fraud-on-the-market presumption of reliance, making securities class actions for claims of false corporate publicity viable, and such cases have become the central mechanisms for private securities fraud litigation. This move came after last Term’s Amgen decision, where four justices signaled their doubts about Basic. This essay looks at the connection between Amgen and the continuing viability of fraud-on-the-market litigation. How Halliburton comes out will likely depend on how the Court …
Protecting Shareholders From Themselves: How The United Kingdom’S 2011 Takeover Code Amendments Hit Their Mark, Matthew Peetz
Protecting Shareholders From Themselves: How The United Kingdom’S 2011 Takeover Code Amendments Hit Their Mark, Matthew Peetz
Penn State Journal of Law & International Affairs (2012 - Present)
Kraft’s takeover of Cadbury in 2011 caused considerable uproar in the United Kingdom. The political outcry caused significant amendments to the United Kingdom’s regulatory framework over mergers and acquisitions, the so-called, Takeover Code. These changes to the Takeover Code were made to help relieve pressure on target companies during takeover situations, and to correct the imbalance of power in favor of bidding companies that the political community had perceived during the Kraft-Cadbury takeover. After the changes were made, but before they were implemented, the business community expressed concern that these added regulations would be detrimental to the M&A market as …
How Precipitous A Decline? U.S.-Iranian Relations And The Transition From American Primacy, Hillary Mann Leverett
How Precipitous A Decline? U.S.-Iranian Relations And The Transition From American Primacy, Hillary Mann Leverett
Penn State Journal of Law & International Affairs (2012 - Present)
This essay is grounded in two basic propositions. The first is that the greatest strategic challenge facing the United States is extricating its foreign policy from a well-worn but deeply counterproductive quest for hegemonic dominance in critical areas of the world, especially the Middle East. The second is that Washington’s handling of its relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran constitutes a crucial test of America’s capacity to put its foreign policy on a more productive and realistic trajectory. Since the Islamic Republic’s founding in 1979, Washington has refused to understand and accept the basic model underlying its political order—the …

The Prohibition On The Use Of Force For Arms Control: The Case Of Iran’S Nuclear Program, Mary Ellen O'Connell, Reyam El Molla
Penn State Journal of Law & International Affairs (2012 - Present)
International law does not permit the use of military force against Iran to attempt to end its nuclear program. The resort to military force in international relations is covered first and foremost by Article 2(4) of the United Nations Charter. Article 2(4) is a general prohibition on resort to force that includes resort to military force for arms control, including nuclear weapons control. The Charter has two express but limited exceptions to the ban on military force. A state that is the victim of a significant armed attack may use force in necessary and proportional self-defense; the United Nations Security …
Iran's Nuclear Program And International Law, Daniel H. Joyner
Iran's Nuclear Program And International Law, Daniel H. Joyner
Penn State Journal of Law & International Affairs (2012 - Present)
In this article, Professor Daniel Joyner analyzes the legal arguments on both sides of the Iran nuclear issue. The article address what the sides regard as the relevant sources of international nuclear law, and their respective interpretations of these sources law. Professor Joyner argues that Iran’s case illustrates warped and incorrect legal interpretations of the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty and other sources of law, and a prejudicial and inconsistent application of the law by the West and by the International Atomic Energy Agency. The article posits that this warped interpretation of NPT obligations has led to a bleak future for the …
The Iranian Nuclear Issue, The End Of The American Century, And The Future Of International Order, Flynt L. Leverett
The Iranian Nuclear Issue, The End Of The American Century, And The Future Of International Order, Flynt L. Leverett
Penn State Journal of Law & International Affairs (2012 - Present)
How the U.S.-Iranian competition for influence in the Middle East plays out will have profound consequences not just for the Middle East, but also for the legal frameworks, rules-based regimes, and mechanisms of global governance that shape international order in the 21st century. This is particularly true with regard to U.S.-Iranian disagreements over the Islamic Republic’s nuclear activities. Strategic competition between America and Iran and its implications for international order play out against a backdrop of the progressive diminution of U.S. leadership in world affairs. Relative decline challenges the United States to share the prerogatives of global governance, especially …
Characterizing Expected Benefits Of Biomarkers In Treatment Selection, Ying Huang, Eric Laber, Holly Janes
Characterizing Expected Benefits Of Biomarkers In Treatment Selection, Ying Huang, Eric Laber, Holly Janes
UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series
Biomarkers associated with the treatment response heterogeneity hold potential for treatment selection. In practice, the decision regarding whether to adopt a treatment selection marker depends on the effect of treatment selection on the rate of targeted disease as well as additional cost associated with the treatment. We propose an expected benefit measure that incorporates both aspects to quantify a biomarker's treatment selection capacity. This measure extends an existing decision-theoretic framework, to account for the fact that optimal treatment absent marker information varies with the cost of treatment. In addition, we establish upper and lower bounds for the performance of a …
