Dense Recordings Reveal Typical And Atypical Development Of Tense Productivity In A Child Previously Diagnosed With Asd, Iris Chin Nov 2013

Dense Recordings Reveal Typical And Atypical Development Of Tense Productivity In A Child Previously Diagnosed With Asd, Iris Chin

Master's Theses

Research on tense development has found that typically developing (TD) children are productive with tense morphology starting between two to two-and-a-half years old. Research findings on children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), however, have been mixed. To better understand how tense development may differ between TD children and children with ASD, we examined the speech of two children, one TD [Cleo] and one that previously presented symptoms of ASD [Audrey]. This study is novel in its use of the Speechome Recorder, which collects dense audio-video recordings of children’s speech in home environments. We found that both children were productive with …

Factors Influencing Vaccination Decisions In African American Mothers Of Preschool Age Children, Chauntel Mckenzie Mcnair Nov 2013

Factors Influencing Vaccination Decisions In African American Mothers Of Preschool Age Children, Chauntel Mckenzie Mcnair

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Rates and coverage levels of immunizations of African-American children are reduced compared to other races. Few studies have identified factors that influence vaccination decisions of African-American mothers. This study assessed the mothers' vaccination decisions using a self-administered questionnaire and a screening instrument for determining health literacy. This instrument is called Rapid Estimate of Adult Literacy in Medicine (REALM). The sample was 92 African American mothers, recruited from a large metropolitan church in Jacksonville, Florida, who had at least one child under the age of seven. A cross-sectional research design was used to administer survey instruments to identify and interpret parental …

Regular And Irregular Type Spacing Error With Tooth Profile Modification Effect On Dynamic Load Of Spur Gear System, Yuxin Qi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The dynamic load of gears with regular type of spacing error such as full-sine and half-sine type has been analyzed in several previous research works. In this study, the irregular type of tooth spacing error is incorporated with the regular type ones to determine their effect on gear dynamic response. Linear and Parabolic tooth profile modification are applied to evaluate their influence on the dynamic loads of gear systems with regular or irregular tooth spacing errors. All dynamic analyses are conducted using the NASA gear dynamics code, DANST program. The objective of this study is to examine the relationship between gear …

Liquid Phase Stability Under An Extreme Temperature Gradient, Zhi Liang, Kiran Sasikumar, Pawel Keblinski Nov 2013

Liquid Phase Stability Under An Extreme Temperature Gradient, Zhi Liang, Kiran Sasikumar, Pawel Keblinski

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Using Nonequilibrium Molecular Dynamics Simulations, We Subject Bulk Liquid to a Very High-Temperature Gradient and Observe a Stable Liquid Phase with a Local Temperature Well above the Boiling Point. Also, under This High-Temperature Gradient, the Vapor Phase Exhibits Condensation into a Liquid at a Temperature Higher Than the Saturation Temperature, Indicating that the Observed Liquid Stability is Not Caused by Nucleation Barrier Kinetics. We Show that, Assuming Local Thermal Equilibrium, the Phase Change Can Be Understood from the Thermodynamic Analysis. the Observed Elevation of the Boiling Point is Associated with the Interplay between the "Bulk" Driving Force for the Phase …

The Filipino As Libertarian Contemporary Implications Of Anarchism, Charles J-H; Macdonald Nov 2013

The Filipino As Libertarian Contemporary Implications Of Anarchism, Charles J-H; Macdonald

Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints

Modern Philippine society presents a number of traits that have puzzled or fascinated social scientists: an apparent looseness of organization, institutional fuzziness, intense factionalism, moral values geared toward smooth interpersonal interaction, a weak sense of public good, and a bilateral kinship system. Thisarticle revisits these points and makes sense of them by using a model of society called “anarchic” or “open-aggregated.” This conceptual grid applies to other societies and cultures, but is particularly enlightening with respect to Filipino values, their institutional style, and preferred types of behavior. Particular attention is paid to kinship and politics, to pakikisama and utang na …

The Hero Legend In Colonial Southeast Asia, Thomas; University Gibson Nov 2013

The Hero Legend In Colonial Southeast Asia, Thomas; University Gibson

Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints

Four legends that originated in the different religious and colonial contexts of the Tagalog and Makassar peoples are shown to conform to Edward Tylor’s classical “hero pattern.” Using structural anthropology and cognitive linguistics, thisarticle argues that hero legends generated metaphors from concrete relationships in the domestic domain to conceptualize abstract relationships in a series of other domains. The hero pattern underwent transformations in tandem with changes in the political and economic institutions in which it was embedded. From its beginnings as a charter for rival city-states in the ancient Middle East, it became a charter for the universalistic world religions …

Contracting Colonialism And The Long 1970s, Vicente L. Rafael Nov 2013

Contracting Colonialism And The Long 1970s, Vicente L. Rafael

Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints

How is it that a book published over twenty-five years ago dealing with a distant historical moment, consisting of a series of close readings of equally obscure texts that few scholars of even the same period bother to read and informed by a style of thinking largely foreign to nationalist ideas, continues to be read and referenced not only in the Philippines but in other parts of the world? Thisarticle seeks to answer this question by placing the making of Contracting Colonialism within the context of the long 1970s in both the Philippines and the United States. Keywords: ContraCting Colonialism • …

Citing A Southeast Asian Classic Citation Analysis Of Vicente Rafael’S: Contracting Colonialism, Ramon Guillermo

Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints

On an international plane, Contracting Colonialism by Vicente Rafael is probably one of the most successful historical works written by a Filipino. Since its publication, it has been widely cited in various disciplines such as Philippine studies, Southeast Asian studies, translation studies, Latin American studies, and various other fields. This paper aims to gain some insight into the extent and nature of its extraordinary influence, both Philippine and international, through citation analysis. However, a critical perspective is also offered on the issue of scholarly valuation through such citation analysis in relation to the Malaysian scholar Syed Farid Alatas’s proposal for …

A German Travels To The North In 1878: Golden Anitos, Bird-Scaring Machines, And The Tree Of Justice, Ramon Guillermo, Maria Eliza Agabin

Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints

After finishing his education at the University of Munich, the German pharmacist Dr. Heinrich Rothdauscher (1851–1937) spent the years 1873 to 1883 working in drugstores in Manila, Cebu, and Vigan. He eventually finished writing an account of his experiences in a work entitled “Memoirs of a German Pharmacist” in 1932. Presented here is a translation of two chapters of a short expedition to the Cordilleras in 1878, which contain interesting literary, historical, and ethnographic elements. Keywords: Travel memoirs • German • PhiliPPines • The Cordilleras • ifuGao

Improving Business Intelligence Design Process Using A Multi-Perspective Inter-Disciplinary Communication Approach, Michael Albert Tomasura Nov 2013

Improving Business Intelligence Design Process Using A Multi-Perspective Inter-Disciplinary Communication Approach, Michael Albert Tomasura

Masters Theses & Doctoral Dissertations

Organizations are continually accumulating large amounts of business data, as an increasing number of business processes are being conducted electronically. Analyzing these large data sets is often referred to as the “Big Data” problem because of the complexity and distributed nature of the data. While there is an abundance of business data available to business users for analysis, it is not being used due to lack of Business Intelligence (BI) Tools’ capability and a growing backlog of requests to Enterprise IT departments for new and modified data models to support continuously evolving reporting and analysis requirements. In addition, current processes …

Me And Goldilocks...Searching For What Is “Just Right” In Trauma Research: An Autoethnography, Rosemary C. Reilly Nov 2013

Me And Goldilocks...Searching For What Is “Just Right” In Trauma Research: An Autoethnography, Rosemary C. Reilly

The Qualitative Report

This is a reflexive account of the tensions and dilemmas emerging from my experience as a woman qualitative researcher researching trauma and tragedy in communities. Framed as an autoethnography, using my conflictual childhood feelings about Goldilocks as an overarching metaphor, I will weave fairy tale and experience into an examination of the impact I can have on individuals, families, and communities in the course in pursuing research. I will attempt to highlight the edges of research culture and ethical conduct, the politics of trespass and the rights of individuals and communities while trying to discover what is “just right.”

Analysis Of Plasminogen Binding To Treponema Denticola, A Key Periopathogen, Brittney Tegels Nov 2013

Analysis Of Plasminogen Binding To Treponema Denticola, A Key Periopathogen, Brittney Tegels

Theses and Dissertations

Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease that affects over 116 million adults in the United States. A shift in the normal microflora occurs as periodontal disease develops resulting in a larger number of Gram-negative anaerobes and spirochetes. An increase in the oral spirochete, Treponema denticola, is highly correlated with periodontal disease progression and severity. The ability of this periopathogen to thrive in the subgingival crevice is dependent on complement evasion mechanisms. Earlier analyses demonstrated that the primary mechanism of T. denticola serum resistance is binding of the human complement regulatory protein, Factor H (FH), to the factor H-binding protein (FhbB). …

Rethinking Library Instruction: Using Learning Outcome Based Design To Teach Online Search Strategies, Meagan Lacy, Hsin-Liang Chen Nov 2013

Rethinking Library Instruction: Using Learning Outcome Based Design To Teach Online Search Strategies, Meagan Lacy, Hsin-Liang Chen

University Libraries Faculty Research & Creative Works

Given the growing pressure on academic institutions and, by extension, academic libraries to establish student learning outcomes and demonstrate their impact on student learning, researchers at Indiana University – Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) explored how outcome-based instructional design can be used to 1) collect student data, 2) assess student learning, and 3) improve instruction. Two surveys were distributed to 59 undergraduate students who were enrolled in an introductory composition course at IUPUI. Because previous studies (e.g. Ford, Miller and Moss 2005) have linked human individual differences with web search strategy, the first survey collected information about the students’ demographic features. …

Background: The objective was to investigate the association between BMI and single nucleotide polymorphisms previously identified of obesity-related genes in two Spanish populations. Forty SNPs in 23 obesity-related genes were evaluated in a rural population characterized by a high prevalence of obesity (869 subjects, mean age 46 yr, 62% women, 36% obese) and in an urban population (1425 subjects, mean age 54 yr, 50% women, 19% obese). Genotyping was assessed by using SNPlex and PLINK for the association analysis. Results: Polymorphisms of the FTO were significantly associated with BMI, in the rural population (beta 0.87, p-value <0.001). None of the other SNPs showed significant association after Bonferroni correction in the two populations or in the pooled analysis. A weighted genetic risk score (wGRS) was constructed using the risk alleles of the Tag-SNPs with a positive Beta parameter in both populations. From the first to the fifth quintile of the score, the BMI increased 0.45 kg/m2 in Hortega and 2.0 kg/m2 in Pizarra. Overall, the obesity predictive value was low (less than 1%).Conclusion: The risk associated with polymorphisms is low and the overall effect on BMI or obesity prediction is minimal. A weighted genetic risk score based on genes mainly acting through central nervous system mechanisms was associated with BMI but it yields minimal clinical prediction for the obesity risk in the general population. © 2013 Martínez-García et al.; licensee BioMed Central Ltd.

Theory, Synthesis, And Application Of Adiabatic And Reversible Logic Circuits For Security Applications, Matthew Arthur Morrison Nov 2013

Theory, Synthesis, And Application Of Adiabatic And Reversible Logic Circuits For Security Applications, Matthew Arthur Morrison

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Programmable reversible logic is emerging as a prospective logic design style for implementation in modern nanotechnology and quantum computing with minimal impact on circuit heat generation. Adiabatic logic is a design methodology for reversible logic in CMOS where the current flow through the circuit is controlled such that the energy dissipation due to switching and capacitor dissipation is minimized. Recent advances in reversible logic using and quantum computer algorithms allow for improved computer architectures. Production of cost-effective Secure Integrated Chips, such as Smart Cards, requires hardware designers to consider tradeoffs in size, security, and power consumption. In order to design …

The Impact Of Parental Psychological Control On College Students’ Relational Aggression And Friendship Quality, Megan F. Snider

Honors Theses

The present study investigated the relationships between parental psychological control and college students’ relational aggression and friendship quality. Based on previous research, it was expected that parents’ use of psychological control would be associated with students’ increased use of relational aggression with peers and lower friendship quality. Students completed a series of survey measures assessing their mothers’ and fathers’ use of psychological control, behavioral control, and warmth/acceptance. Students also completed a series of survey measures assessing their friendship quality, social skills, relational aggression, self-esteem, and social desirability. The study’s findings revealed that parental psychological control was associated with and predicted …

First In Reform: The Adoption Of Common Core State Standards In Kentucky, Richard Day Nov 2013

First In Reform: The Adoption Of Common Core State Standards In Kentucky, Richard Day

Journal of Excellence in College Teaching and Learning

Kentucky first drew national attention when its Supreme Court declared the entire system of schools to be unconstitutional in Rose v Council for Better Education, 790 S. W. 2d 186 (1989). The Rose case, argued by former Kentucky Governor Bert Combs, launched a third wave of school reform litigation based on both equity and adequacy as expressed in state constitutions (Day 2011, 2-4). On February 11, 2010, in an unprecedented joint meeting, the chairs of the Kentucky Board of Educat ion, the Council on Postsecondary Education, and the Education Professional Standards Board signed a resolution directing their respective agencies to …

“Without Contraries”: Casting A Critical Eye On The Common Core--Commentary, Charlie Sweet, Hal Blythe Nov 2013

“Without Contraries”: Casting A Critical Eye On The Common Core--Commentary, Charlie Sweet, Hal Blythe

Journal of Excellence in College Teaching and Learning

A year ago we, as members of the Executive Committee at a Kentucky state institution charged with aligning college academics to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), created a report for KJECTL (Summer 2012) about our progress in complying with Senate Bill 1 (SB1), even detailing a website we jointly created with the state. Interestingly, our institution has a current Quality Enhancement Plan that it “will graduate informed critical and creative thinkers who communicate effectively.” This year we want to demonstrate some of that critical thinking by evaluating the CCSS argument both through our experience and with what various commentators …

Ethics And Fiction: Imaginary Evil And Aesthetic Value, David Michael Hurlburt Nov 2013

Ethics And Fiction: Imaginary Evil And Aesthetic Value, David Michael Hurlburt

Open Access Dissertations

Many fictional works aim to amuse audiences with accounts of immoral characters engaging in evil deeds. A number of positions have emerged to determine to what degree, if any, a work’s treatment of unethical events shapes its aesthetic value. In this dissertation I will evaluate four existing positions and advance my own for consideration, empathic autonomism. I argue that it is not unethical for audience members to enjoy imaginary immoral acts and I will show how this affects various stances. I will present objections to rival views and argue that a fictional work’s ability to allow audiences to empathize with …

Is Theoretical Rationality Derivatively Normative?, Kevin Charles Kifer Nov 2013

Is Theoretical Rationality Derivatively Normative?, Kevin Charles Kifer

Theses

In the recent normativity literature, much attention has been paid to the question of whether rationality is normative. As rationality requires every agent’s attitudes to be logically consistent—and prohibits inconsistent attitudes—we might wonder whether we always have a reason to be rational. The normativity of rationality faces a strong skeptical challenge by Niko Kolodny (2005, 2008). Kolodny’s “why be rational?” challenge denies that we always have a reason to be rational. Andrew Reisner (2011) takes up this challenge and argues that—at a minimum—we necessarily have a strong reason to satisfy requirements of belief consistency and that this reason is parasitic …

Double Resonance Spectroscopy Of The D1Πu+ And B''B-Bar 1Σu+ States Near The Third Dissociation Threshold Of H2, R. C. Ekey, A. E. Cordova, W. Duan, Alexander M. Chartrand, Elizabeth Mccormack Nov 2013

Double Resonance Spectroscopy Of The D1Πu+ And B''B-Bar 1Σu+ States Near The Third Dissociation Threshold Of H2, R. C. Ekey, A. E. Cordova, W. Duan, Alexander M. Chartrand, Elizabeth Mccormack

Physics Faculty Research and Scholarship

Double-resonance laser spectroscopy via the E, F 1Σg+, v' = 6, J' state was used to probe the energy region below the third dissociation limit of molecular hydrogen. Resonantly enhanced multi-photon ionization spectra were recorded by detecting ion production as a function of energy using a time-of-flight mass spectrometer. Energies and line widths for the v = 14–17 levels of the D1Πu+ state of H2 are reported and compared to experimental data obtained by using VUV synchrotron light excitation (Dickenson et al. 2010 J. Chem. Phys. 133 144317) and fully ab …
