A (H.sub.2) sensor composition includes a gas permeable matrix material intermixed and encapsulating at least one chemochromic pigment. The chemochromic pigment produces a detectable change in color of the overall sensor composition in the presence of H.sub.2 gas. The matrix material provides high H.sub.2 permeability, which permits fast permeation of H.sub.2 gas. In one embodiment, the chemochromic pigment comprises PdO/TiO.sub.2. The sensor can be embodied as a two layer structure with the gas permeable matrix material intermixed with the chemochromic pigment in one layer and a second layer which provides a support or overcoat layer.
Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Design For The Environment Tools To Help Meet Sustainability And Design Goals, Ana Maria Leal-Yepes
Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Design For The Environment Tools To Help Meet Sustainability And Design Goals, Ana Maria Leal-Yepes
Theses
Environmental impacts of electronics are a growing concern because the amount and type of materials used in production of the devices, the impacts to the environment from discarded
electronics and the early retirement of products due to rapidly evolving devices, changing design trends, and perceived technological obsolescence. Design for the Environment is a sustainability strategy that aims to reduce the environmental impacts through techniques that enable sustainability solutions during the design decision-making process. In order to suit the diverse
needs of sustainable design practitioners, there has been a large number of tools for Design for the Environment (DfE) developed, confusing …

Brain Mapping Of The Mismatch Negativity Response To Vowel Variances Of Natural And Synthetic Phonemes, Lyndsy Marie Smith
Brain Mapping Of The Mismatch Negativity Response To Vowel Variances Of Natural And Synthetic Phonemes, Lyndsy Marie Smith
Theses and Dissertations
The mismatch negativity (MMN) is a specific event-related potential (ERP) component used frequently in the observation of auditory processing. The MMN is elicited by a deviant stimulus randomly presented in the presence of repeating stimuli. The current study utilized the MMN response in order to determine the temporal (timing) and linguistic processing of natural and synthetic vowel stimuli. It was hypothesized that a significant MMN response would be elicited by natural and synthetic vowel stimuli. Brain mapping of the MMN response was hypothesized to yield temporal resolution information, which would provide detail regarding the sequential processing differences between natural and …

My family has influenced my identity and motivated me to be creative as I navigate through my journey of self-exploration. In my photography and paintings I explore the visual and symbolic aspects of flowers. I photograph flowers and in turn use the images to help guide me when painting florals. I encompass the characteristics and symbolic meanings of each flower, creating paintings that highlight the qualities found in my relationships with others. Flowers and life do not last forever but in my work I try to keep memories alive. In my photography, I focus attention on the vibrant colors and …
Sex Differences In Mother-Infant Interaction, Klaudia Kosiak
Sex Differences In Mother-Infant Interaction, Klaudia Kosiak
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Sex differences in human behavior have frequently been explored by researchers. Although there are numerous studies documenting sex differences between boys and girls from childhood into adulthood, few studies have adequately examined how genetics and environment interact in infancy to promote sex differences in infant behavior. Therefore, the present study sought to examine how sex differences in maternal behavior interact with differences in infant behavior. Maternal and infant behaviors were analyzed within the still-face paradigm, a paradigm which allows for examination of mother-infant interaction in normal, stressful, and recovery situations. It was hypothesized that infant boys would react with more …

The Role Of Animacy In Russian Morphosyntax, Zhanna A. Glushan
The Role Of Animacy In Russian Morphosyntax, Zhanna A. Glushan
Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation investigates the effects of animacy in the syntax and morpho-syntax of language. More precisely, I examine cases in which minimal pairs, varying only in the animacy of the subject NP, show different morpho-syntactic behavior. This study suggests that a significant part of the explanation of these effects lies in the syntactic representation of argument structure—that animate and inanimate NPs, under certain conditions, receive different thematic roles, and thus occupy different structural positions at the syntactic level(s) where argument structure is represented. The findings of this project are shown to constitute a part of a broader generalization and find …
Spectral Analysis Of Nonstationary Heart Rate Of Neonates Receiving Therapeutic Hypothermia Treatment, Tareq Al-Shargabi
Spectral Analysis Of Nonstationary Heart Rate Of Neonates Receiving Therapeutic Hypothermia Treatment, Tareq Al-Shargabi
Theses and Dissertations
We studied Heart Rate Variability (HRV) evolution during therapeutic hypothermia in newborns with hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) using spectral analysis. We hypothesized that HRV measures are predictive of neurological outcome in babies with HIE. Non-stationarity in the data causes inaccurate quantification of the spectral power. A modification was proposed to power spectral analysis approach to mitigate the effect of non-stationarity. The modified and the standard approaches were applied to cardiac beat-to-beat intervals of newborns receiving hypothermia treatment. The performance of the approaches in distinguishing the RRi dynamics of two groups of newborns was assessed using area under the receiver operating …

Multinomial processing tree (MPT) models, as a family of hierarchical multinomial models tailored by cognitive theories, have been proven to be successful and applied to cognitive psychometrics Traditional MPT models measure the probability of success for each cognitive stage given their hierarchical relationships. However, this measure neither addresses individual and item difference, nor characterizes the subject's ability and the difficulty of the cognitive stage. In this study, I extend the cognitive stage parameter in MPT models to a Rasch model, and recruit MPT models for a source monitoring paradigm as an example to demonstrate the extension. To evaluate the properties …
Characterization Of Cast Iron Microdamage: Its Evolution And Impact On Material Properties, Kennedy Beaulieu
Characterization Of Cast Iron Microdamage: Its Evolution And Impact On Material Properties, Kennedy Beaulieu
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
There is a lack of knowledge concerning the evolution of stress-induced damage in cast iron on the microstructural scale. This study addresses this need by investigating the continuous failure of gray cast iron (GCI) and nodular cast iron (NCI) microstructures using acoustic emissions (AE). Microstructural damage evolution is characterized by grouping into three distinct ensembles (stress ranges) for GCI and four for NCI. The amplitude of the AE damage events was interpreted as being proportional to the failure mechanism, with lower amplitude events attributed to graphite failure. Microstructural and failure analysis revealed the following failure mechanisms: graphite fracture and debonding …

Predeliberation Activity In Prefrontal Cortex And Striatum And The Prediction Of Subsequent Value Judgment, Uri Maoz, Ueli Rutishauser, Soyoun Kim, Xinying Cai, Christof Koch
Psychology Faculty Articles and Research
Rational, value-based decision-making mandates selecting the option with highest subjective expected value after appropriate deliberation. We examined activity in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) and striatum of monkeys deciding between smaller, immediate rewards and larger, delayed ones. We previously found neurons that modulated their activity in this task according to the animal's choice, while it deliberated (choice neurons). Here we found neurons whose spiking activities were predictive of the spatial location of the selected target (spatial-bias neurons) or the size of the chosen reward (reward-bias neurons) before the onset of the cue presenting the decision-alternatives, and thus before rational deliberation …
Algorithms For Grid Graphs In The Mapreduce Model, Taylor P. Spangler
Algorithms For Grid Graphs In The Mapreduce Model, Taylor P. Spangler
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The MapReduce programming paradigm has seen widespread use in analyzing large data sets. Often these large data sets can be formulated as graphs. Many algorithms, such as filtering based algorithms, are designed to work efficiently for dense graphs - graphs with substantially more number of edges than the number of vertices. These algorithms are not optimized for sparse graphs - graphs where the number of edges is of the same order as the number of vertices. However, sparse graphs are also common in big data sets. In this thesis we present algorithms for maximal matching, approximate edge covering, and approximate …

Proactive, Not Reactive: Evolving Elm Management In The Nation's Capital, Jessica R. Sanders, James W. Woodworth Jr., Joseph E. Duszak
Cities and the Environment (CATE)
Washington D.C. is home to many historic elm corridors managed in close partnership between numerous urban forestry stakeholders. In recent years, the city's elms have been used as part of streetscape revitalization initiatives due to their quick-growing nature. The use of a popular Ulmus americana cultivar, Princeton, has brought about notable challenges in urban tree management. From the nursery to the tree box and even ten years later, these elms have required consistent attention in order to adequately train the form to achieve a sustainable canopy while minimizing structural defects. Two such plantings are explored, both with hand-selected trees from …

The Bridge: Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Legal & Social Policy
In this chapter a discussion of a salient dimension of the external environment in which today’s educators find themselves practicing – the policy context - is presented. Critical elements of this discussion include a truncated history of the encroachment on local control of the schools and the ensuing standardized-tests-based accountability and standardized testing movement. We also pay some attention to growing efforts to push back against these movements. We conclude this chapter with perspectives of a set of scholarly informants on quality, equity, and adequacy. Our effort in this chapter is to trace the political distance traveled from education defined …

From Colonization To R.E.S.P.E.C.T.: How Federal Education Policy Fails Children And Educators Of Color, Rachelle Lanette Ard, Christopher B. Knaus
The Bridge: Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Legal & Social Policy
In this paper, we argue that national education policy has maintained educational inequality through continually avoiding the very causes of inequality. While a steady stream of re-formulated educational policy mantras lead educators to continually shift curriculum and assessment tools, these efforts ignore the unexamined racism that shapes schooling in the U.S. This paper frames federal policy efforts as designed to continue to benefit White educators (and educators of color aligned to White interests), while justifying educational inequality, measured loosely by false notions of academic achievement. These policy efforts promote economic inequality, promote racialized ideals of what an educator and educational …

How (And Why) Nclb Failed To Close The Achievement Gap:Evidence From North Carolina, 1998-2004, Roslyn Mickelson, Jason Giersch, Elizabeth Stearns, Stephanie Moller
The Bridge: Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Legal & Social Policy
Recent state and national policy changes for public education are premised upon the idea that high-stakes tests can improve student outcomes and close achievement gaps. Opponents maintain that such policies fail on both counts. Using a unique longitudinal dataset from North Carolina, we find that high-stakes tests have failed to close achievement gaps associated with social class and race, and that the persistence of these gaps is related, at least in part, to academic tracking. Such findings add to the questions being raised about such policies as No Child Left Behind.

"Something Rich And Strange": Reburial In New York City, Anne-Marie Cantwell
"Something Rich And Strange": Reburial In New York City, Anne-Marie Cantwell
Northeast Historical Archaeology
This article describes and discusses three recent cases in New York City in which anthropologists were involved in the identification, sanctification, and reburial of human remains. These examples show how living peoples may reach back into the past and join with the dead to form a desired "imagined community." Also discussed are the roles of anthropologists in these transformations of the dead into symbols of a desired body politic. Anthropologists who once focused on interpreting past social constructions are increasingly finding themselves playing crucial roles in the creation of modern ones.
Climate Variability And Weather Noise, Hosmay Lopez
Climate Variability And Weather Noise, Hosmay Lopez
Open Access Dissertations
There is an active research debate regarding how weather and climate interact – this is particular noted in terms of understanding ENSO predictability and the influence of “weather noise”. This weather noise view argues that the irregularity of ENSO and ultimately the loss of predictability are largely driven by stochastic forcing. If the stochastic forcing or noise is of primary importance then it is possible that the details (e.g., space-time structure and state dependence) of the noise are also important – that is weather and climate interactions. The overarching goal of this dissertation research is to develop a framework to …
