Many of the key processes governing fast glacier flow involve interaction between a glacier and its basal hydrological system, which is hidden from direct observation. Passive seismic monitoring has shown promise as a tool for remotely monitoring basal processes, but lack of glacier-bed access prevents clear understanding of the relationships between subglacial processes and corresponding seismic emissions. Here we describe direct measurements of basal hydrology, sliding, and broadband seismicity made in a unique subglacial facility in Norway during the onset of two summer melt seasons. In the most pronounced of these episodes, rapid delivery of surface meltwater to the bed …

Why Run: A Website For New Runners, Irene C. Meyer
Why Run: A Website For New Runners, Irene C. Meyer
Theses
Running is one of the simplest forms of physical activity that a person can take part in, but can still seem daunting to someone who has never done it before. whyRun is a website that guides interested beginners, through a simple and easy user interface design, in the basics of the sport: Why they should get started, how to take those first steps, the different types of running, equipment needed, and how to stay safe and motivated.
I believe that running can genuinely change not only how a person
appears physically by getting a sedentary body into motion, but also …
Sliding Mode Control Of Mimo Non-Square Systems Via Squaring Matrix Transforms, Tim Marvin
Sliding Mode Control Of Mimo Non-Square Systems Via Squaring Matrix Transforms, Tim Marvin
Theses
In this thesis, a novel method for control of over- or under-actuated dynamic systems is developed. The primary control method considered here is Sliding Mode Control which requires an inversion of the control input influence matrix. However on many systems this matrix is non-square, requiring alternate methods in order to the control solution. Some existing solutions for this class of problems include pseudo-inversion such as the Moore-Penrose (which does not allow the design engineer to select the desired state to controlled), dynamic extension (which is difficult to implement on large systems), and pseudo-inverse squaring transform methods. While the squaring transform …
Captive Markets, Leah A. Plunkett

Modern county jails have increasingly adopted policies to bill their inmates for some or all of the costs of their room and board. Statutes authorizing counties to implement these “pay-to-stay” programs are on the books in roughly seventy percent of states, yet the financial mechanism on which these programs typically rely is not well understood. Although the pay-to-stay obligation bears some resemblance to familiar citizen-state financial transactions—such as fines and penalties, restitution, taxes, and fees—it usually belongs to a distinct model that this Article calls the “government-imposed loan.” This Article provides an overview of the landscape of pay-to-stay programs and …

Intrahypothalamic Pituitary Adenylate Cyclase-Activating Polypeptide Regulates Energy Balance Via Site-Specific Actions On Feeding And Metabolism, Jon Resch, Brian Maunze, Adriana K. Gerhardt, Samuel K. Magnuson, Kailynn A. Phillips, Sujean Choi
Biomedical Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
Numerous studies have demonstrated that both the hypothalamic paraventricular nuclei (PVN) and ventromedial nuclei (VMN) regulate energy homeostasis through behavioral and metabolic mechanisms. Receptors for pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide (PACAP) are abundantly expressed in these nuclei suggesting PACAP may be critical for the regulation of feeding behavior and body weight. To characterize the unique behavioral and physiological responses attributed to select hypothalamic cell groups, PACAP was site-specifically injected into the PVN or VMN. Overall food intake was significantly reduced by PACAP at both sites, however meal pattern analysis revealed only injections into the PVN produced significant reductions in meal size, …

Epidemiologic studies and animal models suggest that in utero arsenic exposure affects fetal health, with a negative association between maternal arsenic ingestion and infant birth weight often observed. However, the molecular mechanisms for this association remain elusive. In the present study, we aimed to increase our understanding of the impact of low-dose arsenic exposure on fetal health by identifying possible arsenic-associated fetal tissue biomarkers in a cohort of pregnant women exposed to arsenic at low levels.
Methods: Arsenic concentrations were determined from the urine samples of a cohort of 133 pregnant women from New Hampshire. Placental tissue samples collected from …

Social Networks Sites: Usage And Effects, Ahmed Y. Abdelraheem
Journal of Educational and Psychological Studies
The aim of this paper is to explore the students’ use of social networks sites (SNSs) and its effects on students’ achievement. A questionnaire using a Liker type scale was distributed to a sample of 120 undergraduate students who participated in the study. The results show that students use SNSs for social matters more than for academic purposes. In this regard, there is no significant difference in the use of social network sites between female and male students. Students with smart mobile phones use SNSs more than those with normal mobiles. Facebook was the most used site. There is no …

Neurovascular Unit Dysfunction With Blood-Brain Barrier Hyperpermeability Contributes To Major Depressive Disorder: A Review Of Clinical And Experimental Evidence, Souhel Najjar, Daniel M. Pearlman, Orrin Devinsky, Amanda Najjar, David Zagzag
Dartmouth Scholarship
About one-third of people with major depressive disorder (MDD) fail at least two antidepressant drug trials at 1 year. Together with clinical and experimental evidence indicating that the pathophysiology of MDD is multifactorial, this observation underscores the importance of elucidating mechanisms beyond monoaminergic dysregulation that can contribute to the genesis and persistence of MDD. Oxidative stress and neuroinflammation are mechanistically linked to the presence of neurovascular dysfunction with blood-brain barrier (BBB) hyperpermeability in selected neurological disorders, such as stroke, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, traumatic brain injury, and Alzheimer’s disease. In contrast to other major psychiatric disorders, MDD is frequently comorbid with …
A Matter Of Interest: Illinois Courts Should Return To The Traditional Rule For Awarding Prejudgment Interest In Insurance Coverage Cases, Stanley C. Nardoni
A Matter Of Interest: Illinois Courts Should Return To The Traditional Rule For Awarding Prejudgment Interest In Insurance Coverage Cases, Stanley C. Nardoni
Southern Illinois University Law Journal
Without acknowledging their departure from precedent, Illinois Appellate Court decisions have recently shifted from treating prejudgment interest as a matter of right for money owed under insurance policies to something within trial court discretion. This shift is unwelcome for several reasons. First, it contravenes the terms of Illinois’ Interest Act, which says creditors “shall be allowed to receive” prejudgment interest for “all” moneys due on any “instrument of writing.” It also frustrates that statute’s purpose of compensating for the time value of money owed under written contracts. Further, it is in conflict with Illinois Supreme Court decisions that have applied …
The Role Of Government In Energy Markets: A Look At The Market-Based Rates Process, The Ferc, And The Future Of Energy Markets In America, Andrew Laquet
Southern Illinois University Law Journal
It is often argued that markets can solve anything, and market-based policies have steadily crept into many of the policies that affect our everyday lives, especially when it comes to energy regulation. For years, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) has increasingly used a market-based rates strategy to spur investment in energy infrastructure.
However, market-based rate policies have been wholly inadequate to spur this investment in infrastructure, particularly in transmission infrastructure and promoting efficiency, and alternative approaches should be used to accomplish these goals. This Comment will take a look at the history and theoretical underpinnings of market-based rates before …

Silencing The Rebel Yell: Exceptions To The First Amendment After Defoe Ex Rel. Defoe V. Spiva, 625 F.3d 324 (6th Cir. 2010), Alexandra Brown
Southern Illinois University Law Journal
One of the central tenets of the First Amendment is the freedom of speech. However, the Supreme Court has consistently held the First Amendment does not provide the same protections for minors’ speech in public school as it does for adult speech. Recently, the Sixth Circuit further limited the protections provided to student speech in Defoe ex rel. Defoe v. Spiva. This Note examines the decision in Defoe ex rel. Defoe v. Spiva and argues that the decision was incorrect because it deviated from long-standing Supreme Court precedent and erroneously created a new standard that was left undefined. This …

Yea Or Neigh? The Economics, Ethics, And Utility Of The Horsemeat Filet, L. Leon Geyer, Dan Lawler
Journal of Food Law & Policy
While staying surprisingly low profile amongst the general populace, the issue of horse slaughter has become hotly contested in the last decade, evolving into a multifaceted controversy that intertwines questions regarding ethics, international commerce, and contemporary law and politics. Horses were slaughtered in the U.S. in United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) regulated plants until 2007, when an appropriations bill suspended funding for federal inspections of horsemeat. The U.S. was home to three domestic slaughterhouses - two in Texas and one in Illinois - that slaughtered an average of about 115,003 horses per year from 1990 to 2007. Currently, American …

Objective: Identify factors that predict fall-related injury in hospitalized adults. Design: Retrospective cohort study. Setting: 435-bed university hospital. Participants: Inpatients with reported falls in 2010. Results: Medical records were available for 286/293 (98%) of reported falls in 251 patients. 25% (63/286) of falls were associated with injury, 4% (11/286) with serious injury. Compared to all fallers, patients with injury did not differ by gender or age. In univariate analysis, patients who reported hitting their head, had pre-fall confusion, or who received narcotics within 24 hours before falling were more likely to suffer injury (estimated odds ratios 6.04, 2.00 and 5.1, …
Structural And Biochemical Characterization Of The Bilin Lyase Cpcs From Thermosynechococcus Elongatus, Wendy M. Schluchter
Structural And Biochemical Characterization Of The Bilin Lyase Cpcs From Thermosynechococcus Elongatus, Wendy M. Schluchter
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Cyanobacterial phycobiliproteins have evolved to capture light energy over most of the visible spectrum due to their bilin chromophores, which are linear tetrapyrroles that have been covalently attached by enzymes called bilin lyases. We report here the crystalstructure of a bilin lyase of the CpcS family from Thermosynechococcus elongatus (TeCpcS-III). TeCpcS-III is a 10-stranded beta barrel with two alpha helices and belongs to the lipocalin structural family. TeCpcS-III catalyzes both cognate as well as noncognate bilin attachment to a variety of phycobiliprotein subunits. TeCpcS-III ligates phycocyanobilin, phycoerythrobilin, and phytochromobilin to the alpha and beta subunits of allophycocyanin and to the …

An Improved Thin-Film Microelectrode Array And Signal Conditioning Board For Measuring Cardiac Surface Potentials., Christopher Hayward Osborne
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The work outlined in this thesis expanded on previous work to improve a thin-film microfabricated electrode array intended for cardiac electrophysiology studies. A thin layer of silver was added in between titanium and platinum electrical trace layers to reduce electrode resistance. A 200 nm layer of silver decreased electrode resistance by an order of magnitude. In addition, a new high quality signal conditioning board was developed using precision operational amplifiers from Texas Instruments. Both new sensor and board design were verified together through in vivo studies using rabbit, goat, and dog hearts.
Pulsatile Flow Does Not Improve Efficacy In Ex Vivo Lung Perfusion., Keith A. Zoeller
Pulsatile Flow Does Not Improve Efficacy In Ex Vivo Lung Perfusion., Keith A. Zoeller
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Introduction Ex vivo lung perfusion (EVLP) has the potential to increase the donor pool for lung transplantation by facilitating extended evaluation of marginal organs. Current methodology employs continuous flow pumps for perfusion. In vivo, continuous flow has been shown to increase pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR). Thus, pulsatile flow EVLP may reduce PVR and improve organ preservation by providing physiologic flow morphology. Methods Lung blocks harvested from male, Yorkshire pigs were allocated into continuous (CF, n=3) and pulsatile flow (PF, n=4) groups. Lungs were ventilated at 4-5 mL/kg, 30% FiO2 and perfused with an acellular, albumin-based solution corrected for osmolarity, acid/base …
Face Recognition In The Wild., Mostafa A. Farag
Face Recognition In The Wild., Mostafa A. Farag
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Research in face recognition deals with problems related to Age, Pose, Illumination and Expression (A-PIE), and seeks approaches that are invariant to these factors. Video images add a temporal aspect to the image acquisition process. Another degree of complexity, above and beyond A-PIE recognition, occurs when multiple pieces of information are known about people, which may be distorted, partially occluded, or disguised, and when the imaging conditions are totally unorthodox! A-PIE recognition in these circumstances becomes really “wild” and therefore, Face Recognition in the Wild has emerged as a field of research in the past few years. Its main purpose …
