Reaching Out To Transfer Students: Usc Upstate's Foundation In Information Literacy, Andrew Kearns, Chris Vidas

LOEX Conference Proceedings 2011

How do you "catch" transfer students to ensure that they receive timely instruction in information literacy? What kind of intervention will be compatible with library staff and budgetary considerations? What kind of outreach is likely to gain support of the institution? This presentation will describe USC Upstate's Foundation in Information Literacy (FIL), an "inventory" administered through the admissions process. We will describe how we created FIL, how we marketed it, what kinds of follow-up we have designed for students who take it, and the results of the pilot administrations in Spring and Fall 2010. We will also address the future …

Muchos Mentores En Iowa: The Pedagogy Of Student To Student Mentoring In Information Literacy, Julia Bauder, Beth Bohstedt, Phillip Jones

LOEX Conference Proceedings 2011

At Grinnell College we believe that students can be the best teachers and that lasting learning also happens outside of the classroom. The Grinnell College Libraries' peer mentoring program is rooted in these beliefs. Our program has two components: advanced research help provided by reference assistants (RAs) at the reference desk; and basic information service provided by all students working at our public service desks. Throughout this presentation, attendees will be challenged to consider if peer information service is appropriate for their libraries and to articulate initial steps to explore and implement such a service.

State Taxation Of Trusts And Their Beneficiaries When There Are Multiple State Contacts, John Mcgown Jr. Dec 2013

State Taxation Of Trusts And Their Beneficiaries When There Are Multiple State Contacts, John Mcgown Jr.

ACTEC Law Journal

This article examines the state income taxation of testamentary trusts and individual trust beneficiaries when there are multiple state contacts. For matters of illustration, the focus is on states comprising the Northwest Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, Washington, Oregon, Nevada, and Utah. Since three of these states have no individual income tax, essence of the inquiry is limited to the state income tax systems of Idaho, Utah, Montana, and Oregon. Although the focus is on states in the Northwest, the concept applies nationwide. Before moving on to an examination of the state taxation topic, a review of the basic federal system of …

Media's Influence On The Drive For Muscularity In Undergraduates, Brooke Cramblitt, Mary Pritchard

Psychological Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Although research has found that body ideals presented by the media influence women's body dissatisfaction, less is known about media's influence on men's body satisfaction. An online survey examining media use, the drive for muscularity, and internalization of appearance and body shape ideals was given to a sample of 311 participants comprised of both men and women. Results indicated (a) the more time men and women reported watching television, the higher their reported drive for muscularity (b) total hours of viewing sports-related, image-focused, and entertainment television related to increased drive for muscularity in women (c) drive for muscularity in men …

"My God, My God, Why Hast Thou Forsaken Me?": Psalm 22 And The Mission Of Christ, Shon D. Hopkin Dec 2013

"My God, My God, Why Hast Thou Forsaken Me?": Psalm 22 And The Mission Of Christ, Shon D. Hopkin

BYU Studies

Perhaps no Old Testament texts have exerted more influence on the New Testament understanding of Christ's mission than Psalm 22 and Isaiah 53. Among Latter-day Saints, however, Isaiah 53 has received much more attention than Psalm 22. This paper aims to illuminate the powerful, Christ-centered nature of Psalm 22. It first discusses Psalm 22 in detail, demonstrating its prophetic connections with Christ's ministry, including early Christian insights regarding the Psalm. It then discusses the importance of Christ's quotation from the cross of Psalm 22:1--"My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?"--and analyzes LDS statements regarding it.

Speech Enhancement By Exploiting The Baseband Phase Structure Of Voiced Speech For Effective Non-Stationary Noise Estimation, Sanjay Patil Dec 2013

Speech Enhancement By Exploiting The Baseband Phase Structure Of Voiced Speech For Effective Non-Stationary Noise Estimation, Sanjay Patil

All Theses

Speech enhancement is one of the most important and challenging issues in the speech communication and signal processing field. It aims to minimize the effect of additive noise on the quality and intelligibility of the speech signal. Speech quality is the measure of noise remaining after the processing on the speech signal and of how pleasant the resulting speech sounds, while intelligibility refers to the accuracy of understanding speech. Speech enhancement algorithms are designed to remove the additive noise with minimum speech distortion. The task of speech enhancement is challenging due to lack of knowledge about the corrupting noise. Hence, the …

The Perspective Of Law On Contract, Aditi Bagchi Dec 2013

The Perspective Of Law On Contract, Aditi Bagchi

Washington Law Review

What is the perspective of law on contract? This Article will consider two dimensions of the perspective we offer students. Part I will consider how we present the nature of contract law. That is, it will explore the extent to which traditional methods of teaching unduly underplay indeterminacy and disagreement. In that Part I distinguish between inductive and deductive legal reasoning and suggest we may give short shrift to the former in teaching. Part II will consider the attitude of the law toward contract as a social practice. Here I distinguish between internal and external perspectives on law and suggest …

Cases And Controversies: Some Things To Do With Contracts Cases, Charles L. Knapp Dec 2013

Cases And Controversies: Some Things To Do With Contracts Cases, Charles L. Knapp

Washington Law Review

As a co-author of one of the two dozen or more currently-in-print Contracts casebooks, I obviously have both a point of view about, and a personal stake in, the survival of this particular method of instruction. Whether the legal casebook—or any other book, in the form of bound sheets of paper—will remain a part of our academic culture much longer is clearly up for grabs, however. Electronic records have so many advantages over the printed page that, at least for many purposes, they will surely become the dominant form of preserving, retrieving, and transmitting information, if indeed they are not …

The Clustering Of Galaxies In The Sdss-Iii Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey: Weighing The Neutrino Mass Using The Galaxy Power Spectrum Of The Cmass Sample, Gong-Bo Zhao, Shun Saito, For Full List Of Authors, See Publisher's Website.

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We measure the sum of the neutrino particle masses using the three-dimensional galaxy power spectrum of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey III (SDSS-III) Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey Data Release 9 the constant MASS (CMASS) galaxy sample. Combined with the cosmic microwave background, supernova and additional baryonic acoustic oscillation data, we find upper 95 per cent confidence limits (CL) of the neutrino mass ∑mν < 0.340 eV within a flat Λ cold dark matter (ΛCDM) background, and ∑mν< 0.821 eV, assuming a more general background cosmological model. The number of neutrino species is measured to be Neff = 4.308 ± 0.794 and 4.032+0.870 -0.894 for these two cases, respectively. We study and quantify the effect of several factors on the neutrino measurements, including the galaxy power spectrum bias model, the …

Eliminating Bus Stops: Evaluating Changes In Operations, Emissions And Coverage, Ranjay M. Shrestha, Edmund J. Zolnik Dec 2013

Eliminating Bus Stops: Evaluating Changes In Operations, Emissions And Coverage, Ranjay M. Shrestha, Edmund J. Zolnik

Journal of Public Transportation

Bus systems in the United States are unattractive to many potential riders because of their lack of efficiency, especially with regard to travel time. One of the reasons services are not more efficient has to do with the spacing of bus stops. After using a nearest facility algorithm with an 800 m walking distance threshold to identify eligible bus stops in the current bus system in the city of Fairfax, Virginia, the impacts of their elimination on operations, emissions, and coverage are estimated. Results indicate that eliminating some bus stops (about 40% of current stops) could improve travel times and …

Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects

This project, which encompasses both written and performed aspects, is an exploration of the North Indian classical music tradition as it is taught in twenty-first century California, and a de-exoticization of a musical style that most Americans are unacquainted with. A brief overview of the basic theory, history, and practice of North Indian classical music is followed by a comparison of oral and written musical traditions. A specific composition from the North Indian classical tradition is included as an example of the form and how that form is transmitted. Emerging modes of transmission include multimedia and network technologies; their use, …
