A Direct Thrust Measurement System For A Waterjet Propelled, Free Running Usv, John A. Grimes Jan 2013

A Direct Thrust Measurement System For A Waterjet Propelled, Free Running Usv, John A. Grimes

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The relationship between cross-flow at a waterjet inlet and delivered thrust is not fully understood. A direct thrust measurement system was designed for a waterjet propelled, free running USV. To induce sway velocity at the waterjet inlet, which was considered equivalent to the cross flow, circles of varying radii were performed at Reynolds Numbers between 3.48 x 106 and 8.7 x 106 and radii from 2.7 to 6.3 boat lengths. Sway velocities were less than twenty percent of mean forward speed with slip angles that were less than 20°. Thrust Loading Coefficients were compared to sway as a percent of …

"A Spirit Of Benevolence", Jennifer L. Boxen Jan 2013

"A Spirit Of Benevolence", Jennifer L. Boxen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This thesis argues that the British Public Health movement did not begin in 1842 with Edwin Chadwick's publication, Report on the Sanitary Conditions of the Labouring Population of Great Britain (1842), or in 1848, with the subsequent passage of the Public Health Act. The beginning of the public health movement was instead the product of local initiatives such as the Manchester Board of Health, administered not by central government, but by members of the local community supported by predominantly philanthropic funding. The Manchester movement predated Chadwick's efforts by at least half a century and bore a greater resemblance to the …

A Troubled Past: Reconfiguring Postwar Suburban American Identity In Revolutionary Road, 1961 And Mad Men, 2007-2012, Erin M. Kiley Jan 2013

A Troubled Past: Reconfiguring Postwar Suburban American Identity In Revolutionary Road, 1961 And Mad Men, 2007-2012, Erin M. Kiley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This thesis takes a cultural studies approach to representations of post-war U.S. suburbia in Richard Yates’ 1961 novel Revolutionary Road, as well as in the contemporary AMC television series Mad Men. These texts explore the postwar time period, which holds a persistently prominent and idealized space in the collective cultural imagination of America, despite the fact that it was a period troubled by isolationism, containment culture, rampant consumerism, and extreme pressure to conform to social roles. This project disrupts the romantic narrative of postwar America by focusing on the latent anxiety within the suburban landscape—by interrogating the performative nature of …

Certificate Authentication Security And The Preservation Of Privacy In Wireless Access In Vehicular Environment (Wave), Clifford Allen Kemp Jan 2013

Certificate Authentication Security And The Preservation Of Privacy In Wireless Access In Vehicular Environment (Wave), Clifford Allen Kemp

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Future vehicles will exchange safety-critical information messages wirelessly with other vehicles on the road. We must provide secure mechanisms to validate the authenticity and integrity of these messages. The IEEE Standard 1609.2 defines the format of secure messages and identifies security algorithms and mechanism for use in Wireless Access in Vehicular Environment (WAVE). We propose an organizational structure for Central Management Entities (CMEs) to address these goals and functional requirements, and to balance the security of communications with protection of user privacy. A concern in vehicular communications is the privacy of vehicle owners. Privacy must be preserved and the user …

Conscious And Non-Conscious Bases Of Social Judgement, Susan D. Sullivan Jan 2013

Conscious And Non-Conscious Bases Of Social Judgement, Susan D. Sullivan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Research on social judgment typically emphasizes one of three processes that enable unequivocal understanding of events with ambiguous causality. In the social influence perspective, people are susceptible to the interpretations offered by others. In the explicit attitudes perspective, people interpret events in line with their consciously held attitudes and values. In the implicit attitudes perspective, people interpret events in line with unconscious biases. The model investigated in the present study assumes that these processes vary in salience depending on people's mindset. Participants with low versus high implicit racial bias toward Blacks read a narrative concerning this altercation under either a …

In this thesis, we propose to combine permission, API (Application Program Interface) calls and function calls to build …

Democratization And Exogenous Cultural Influence, John R. Batey Jan 2013

Democratization And Exogenous Cultural Influence, John R. Batey

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Democratic forms of government are either consolidating democratic institutions or unraveling into authoritarianism in the former Soviet Union. Among the possible causes of each success or failure to consolidate democracy is the character of civil society and its cultural proximity to long-standing, modern state-based, consolidated democracies of the West. What impact does Western or Westernized media have upon the indigenous civil societies of Eastern Europe, and is this impact sufficient to consolidate democracy among the states of the former Soviet Union? As case studies, Eastern Europe contains two states, Estonia and Russia, where democracy has either succeeded or failed alongside …

Cyclic Lipodepsipeptides As Lead Structures For The Discovery Of New Antiobiotics, Nina. Bionda

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

With antimicrobial resistance to current drugs steadily rising, the development of new antibiotics with novel mechanisms of action has become an imperative. The majority of life-threatening infections worldwide are caused by "ESKAPE" pathogens which are encountered in more than 40% of hospital-acquired infections, and are resistant to the majority of commonly used antibiotics. Naturally occurring cyclic depsipeptides, microbial secondary metabolites that contain one or more ester bonds in addition to amide bonds, have emerged as an important source of pharmacologically active compounds or lead structures for the development of novel antibiotics. Some of those peptides are either already marketed (daptomycin) …
