Discovery Of New Biomarkers Of Mild Cognitive Impairment And Alzheimer's Disease Risk In Buccal Cells Using Laser Scanning Cytometry, Maxime Francois Jan 2013

Discovery Of New Biomarkers Of Mild Cognitive Impairment And Alzheimer's Disease Risk In Buccal Cells Using Laser Scanning Cytometry, Maxime Francois

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Previous studies have shown that mild cognitive impairment (MCI) may reflect the early stages of more pronounced neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease (AD). In clinical practice, patients with AD are not usually identified until the disease has progressed to a stage when primary prevention is no longer possible. Therefore there is a need for a minimally invasive and inexpensive diagnostic to identify those who exhibit cellular pathology indicative of MCI and AD risk so that they can be prioritised for primary prevention. Human buccal cells are accessible in a minimally invasive manner, and exhibit cytological and nuclear morphologies that …

On A Joint Physical Layer And Medium Access Control Sublayer Design For Efficient Wireless Sensor Networks And Applications, Mahir Lumumba Meghji

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are distributed networks comprising small sensing devices equipped with a processor, memory, power source, and often with the capability for short range wireless communication. These networks are used in various applications, and have created interest in WSN research and commercial uses, including industrial, scientific, household, military, medical and environmental domains. These initiatives have also been stimulated by the finalisation of the IEEE 802.15.4 standard, which defines the medium access control (MAC) and physical layer (PHY) for low-rate wireless personal area networks (LR-WPAN).

Future applications may require large WSNs consisting of huge numbers of inexpensive wireless sensor …

In the last decades of the 20th Century, and through the first decade of the 21st Century, both the natural world and human society have experienced dramatic change. Contemporary society world-wide has high expectations of the contribution that universities can make in helping people learn to live with change, to lead change, to manage change, and to support improvement in all spheres of life. The global community seeks ‘excellence’ across all higher education roles: community engagement and leadership, research and innovation, and teaching and learning. However, universities are not always regarded as effective in fulfilling the needs of students, business …

Improving Evaluations Of Anti-Bullying Programs In Schools, Thérèse Shaw Jan 2013

Improving Evaluations Of Anti-Bullying Programs In Schools, Thérèse Shaw

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Bullying at school is associated with negative social, psychological and academic outcomes for both the victimised student and the perpetrator. As a consequence, national strategies to address bullying have been implemented in numerous countries, and education sectors and schools have increasingly directed resources to the problem. To ensure resources are allocated to programs and strategies that will prevent and successfully respond to bullying in schools, and therefore prevent harm to students, evidence of program effectiveness is required. Evaluations of anti-bullying programs in schools have had mixed results and there is a lack of robust evidence as to their impact. Several …

The introduction of the touch screen Tablet PC has brought another dimension to the way technology can be used in the classroom. This study seeks to investigate the ways in which Tablet PC technology has been used to enhance the learning of students …

The Reality Of Reform : Teachers Reflecting On Curriculum Reform In Western Australia, Jessica Lyle Jan 2013

The Reality Of Reform : Teachers Reflecting On Curriculum Reform In Western Australia, Jessica Lyle

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Australia is implementing its first national curriculum, the Australian Curriculum, after many years of debate regarding the validity and practicality of such an undertaking. Although it is widely accepted that “the effects of education policies and programs depend chiefly on what teachers make of them” (Cohen & Ball, 1990, p. 233), little is known about teachers’ perceptions of the Australian Curriculum or their prior experiences of mandatory curriculum reform as they begin engaging with this unique reform. To provide a means of exploring these perceptions and experiences, 18 teachers, four Head of Learning Areas (HOLAs) and the principal from a …

Journal of Dental Sciences

Abstract Adenomatoid odontogenic tumor (AOT) occurs more frequently in the maxillary anterior region. Recurrence of AOT after surgical excision is very rare. In this case report, we describe a left posterior mandibular AOT case that exhibited three recurrences after surgical removal. A 25-year-old female patient was first seen by an oral surgeon in a regional hospital with the chief complaint of a swelling at the left mandibular molar region. The tumor was removed by enucleation. Five years later, the tumor recurred at the same region. The patient was referred to our hospital for treatment, and the recurrent tumor was widely …

Subsidiary Innovation:A Phenomenon Under Threat?, Marty Reilly, Pamela Sharkey Scott Jan 2013

Subsidiary Innovation:A Phenomenon Under Threat?, Marty Reilly, Pamela Sharkey Scott

Articles

Rarely are the linkages between theory and practice as apparent as those between the strategic renewal literature and current structural transformations being realised within many multinationals (MNCs). Strategic renewal promotes the transformation of capabilities, structural models and organisational reform. Similarly, we can see similarly how many MNC organisations, cognizant of both global and technological change are championing these key tenets in choosing a new path, and shifting from networks of mini-replica subsidiaries towards more task-driven, integrated systems of activities. The advance of this transactional approach to operations is driven by an aim to create greater efficiencies, eliminate duplication of efforts …

Mathematical Self-Efficacy: Addressing The Declining Interest In Engineering Careers, Eileen Goold Jan 2013

Mathematical Self-Efficacy: Addressing The Declining Interest In Engineering Careers, Eileen Goold

Conference Papers

This paper presents the findings of a study investigating whether there is a relationship between students’ experiences with school mathematics and their choice of engineering as a career. The study was inspired by the observation that there is a lacuna in the scholarly literature concerning the nature of mathematics’ role, if any, as a significant cause of the declining number of students entering professional engineering courses. The population of interest in this study comprises professional engineers practising in Ireland. Engineers’ experiences of school mathematics, factors that contributed to their engagement with school mathematics and the impact of their feelings about …

Free-Living Amoebae In Sediments From The Lascaux Cave In France, Angela M. Garcia-Sanchez, Concepcion Ariza, Jose M. Ubeda, Pedro M. Martin-Sanchez, Valme Jurado, Fabiola Bastian, Claude Alabouvette, Cesareo Saiz Jimenez Jan 2013

Free-Living Amoebae In Sediments From The Lascaux Cave In France, Angela M. Garcia-Sanchez, Concepcion Ariza, Jose M. Ubeda, Pedro M. Martin-Sanchez, Valme Jurado, Fabiola Bastian, Claude Alabouvette, Cesareo Saiz Jimenez

International Journal of Speleology

The Lascaux Cave in France is an old karstic channel where the running waters are collected in a pool and pumped to the exterior. It is well-known that water bodies in the vicinity of humans are suspected to be reservoirs of amoebae and associated bacteria. In fact, the free-living amoebae Acanthamoeba astronyxis, Acanthamoeba castellanii, Acanthamoeba sp. and Hartmannella vermiformis were identified in the sediments of the cave using phylogenetic analyses and morphological traits. Lascaux Cave sediments and rock walls are wet due to a relative humidity near saturation and water condensation, and this environment and the presence of abundant bacterial …

Advances In Blind Source Separation, Christopher Osterwise Jan 2013

Advances In Blind Source Separation, Christopher Osterwise

Doctoral Dissertations

"Blind Source Separation (BSS) is a classic problem that attempts to separate unknown sources from observed mixtures. A common framework of this is the Cocktail Party problem, where multiple individuals speaking in a noisy room are recorded by a configuration of microphones, with the challenge being to split the observed signals into individual conversations. This dissertation covers the evaluation of an existing algorithm known as Cascaded ICA with Intervention Alignment (CICAIA), the establishment of a new parameter for characterizing blind mixtures, and three new algorithms, of which two are capable of separating any number of sources given more microphones than …

"Label-free optical fiber chemical sensors have provoked significant research interest in recent years due to their unique advantages of small size, low cost, potential for distributed sensing, capability of in situ and remote operation, and tolerance to harsh environments. However, existing optical fiber chemical sensors lack the desired sensitivity and specificity for many applications such as chemical and biological analysis, industrial process control, environmental monitoring, and national security.

The dissertation summarizes our research efforts and results in functional integration of nanoporous zeolites with optical fiber devices for development of label-free optical fiber chemical sensors with high sensitivity and selectivity. Fundamental …

Minimizing Formation Damage For Preformed Particle Gels Treatment In Mature Reservoirs, Mahmoud Omran Elsharafi Jan 2013

Minimizing Formation Damage For Preformed Particle Gels Treatment In Mature Reservoirs, Mahmoud Omran Elsharafi

Doctoral Dissertations

"This research studied the effect of preformed particle gels (PPGs) on unswept, low-permeable zones/areas. The objective was to find methods that minimized the damage caused by PPGs on unswept, low-permeable zones/areas, thus improving PPG treatment efficiency. These results can help to identify of the best PPG types, particle sizes, and brine concentrations for specific reservoirs and treatments. This study used sandstone core samples with various degrees of permeability. Two types of particle gels, a strong Daqing gel (DQ) and a weak Liquiblock™ 40k gel (40K), were used, each with a different strength.

This research included two stages. Firstly, both a …

Topics In Voice Echo Cancellation, Pratik Vijay Shah Jan 2013

Topics In Voice Echo Cancellation, Pratik Vijay Shah

Doctoral Dissertations

"Acoustic echo cancellation (AEC) is a well studied problem. The underlying assumption in most echo cancellation solutions is that the echo path following the reference signal is completely linear. However, in many handheld devices, the echo path following the reference signal is nonlinear. The reason for this nonlinearity in the echo path is the use of smaller and cheaper loudspeakers. In order to cut the manufacturing cost, device manufactures use cheaper loudspeakers such that they satisfy the carrier specifications. Such loudspeaker can be easily over driven in to their nonlinear region and thus add nonlinearities to the downlink path. This …

Study Of Artificially Disordered Optical Fibers, Herath Mudiyanselage Sumudu Rasika Kumari Herath Jan 2013

Study Of Artificially Disordered Optical Fibers, Herath Mudiyanselage Sumudu Rasika Kumari Herath

Doctoral Dissertations

"Light transmission through photo-sensitive multi-mode fibers (MMF) with controlled volume disorder is investigated. Experiment shows that a segment of disordered MMF as short as 10 cm is sufficient to distribute power uniformly over all co-propagating modes and the intensity at the output surface of the fiber follows the Rayleigh negative exponential function. To explain the experimental findings, a comprehensive theoretical model is developed with three main results. First, statistical properties of all components of the dielectric tensor are obtained and analyzed in the framework a microscopical model of photo-sensitivity in a germano-silicate glasses. Secondly, it is shown that induced birefringence …
