The Rhetorical Approach To 1 Thessalonians In Light Of Funeral Oration, Jae Kyung Cho Jan 2013

The Rhetorical Approach To 1 Thessalonians In Light Of Funeral Oration, Jae Kyung Cho

ATS Dissertations

The present dissertation is a study of the rhetorical approach to 1 Thessalonians, particularly funeral oration. Though many scholars have interpreted 1 Thessalonians in light of thematic perspective, mirror reading, and epistolary approach, this dissertation asserts that Paul employs elements of epideictic funerary oratory to persuade his audience in writing 1 Thessalonians. Moreover, the dissertation shows that Paul’s use of funerary language with some twists in meaning and purpose illustrates that Paul employs topoi and the purpose of funeral oration in 1 Thessalonians.

Encountering the growing persecution, sufferings, and even death of members, the believers of Thessalonica needed encouragement and …

Effectiveness Of Peer Mentoring In First-Year Program Classrooms, Katherine Casey Jan 2013

Effectiveness Of Peer Mentoring In First-Year Program Classrooms, Katherine Casey

Master's Theses

First-year programs (FYPs) for college students offer extended orientation to campus resources and provide first-time freshmen with essential skills for academic success, and many believe that the effectiveness of FYPs increases with the presence of peer mentors. The present study measured the added effectiveness of peer mentoring in FYP classrooms with knowledge of campus resources as a dependent measure. Ninety one first-year students in nine sections of FYP classes participated in this quasi-experimental study. Seven of the classes had peer mentors (n = 70), and the two control classes (n = 21) did not have peer mentors in the classroom. …

Novel Systematic Phase Noise Reduction Techniques For Phase Interpolator Clock And Data Recovery, Yu Feng Jan 2013

Novel Systematic Phase Noise Reduction Techniques For Phase Interpolator Clock And Data Recovery, Yu Feng

Master's Theses

This work focused on high-speed source-synchronous clock and multi-channel data receivers for inter-chip communications. Designs of inter-chip communication are becoming increasingly difficult with the rise in clock rates and the reduction in voltage supplies. Data transmissions at rates of gigabits per second require a fast and accurate clock and data recovery system on the front end of receivers.

Many designs allow for source-synchronous clocking architectures, but this work focused on a dual-loop with a phase-locked loop for frequency tracking and phase integrators for tracking each individual data lane. Limitations with the phase interpolator architecture cause systematic jitter, reducing the data …

Restoring Native Plants Following Invasive Malephora Crocea (Coppery Iceplant, Aizoaceae) Eradication On Anacapa Island, Nathan William Hale Jan 2013

Restoring Native Plants Following Invasive Malephora Crocea (Coppery Iceplant, Aizoaceae) Eradication On Anacapa Island, Nathan William Hale

Master's Theses

To avoid unintended complications of invasive species eradication, it is important to understand the potential implications of the techniques used in species eradication efforts. This study aimed to compare how different methods of removing Malephora crocea affect the survivorship of planted seedlings of native perennial plants on Anacapa Island. Employing a randomized complete block design in an M. crocea stand, three removal treatments were tested: 1) hand-pull; 2) spray with herbicide and leave skeletons; and 3) spray and then remove skeletons after 2.5 months. In each treatment, seedlings of three species (Leptosyne gigantea, Frankenia salina, and Grindelia …

This Could Be A Game!": Defining Gamification For The Classroom, Darcy Elaine Osheim Jan 2013

This Could Be A Game!": Defining Gamification For The Classroom, Darcy Elaine Osheim

Master's Theses

Instructors find a gap between what they experienced in school in the mid-to-late 20th century and the experiences of students entering college in 2012/13. In the United States, the influx of almost universal access to technology has marked this generation in a way the previous generations must work to understand, and gamification is a strategy used in areas like marketing to gain participation from this age group. Gamification is a strategy that employs game mechanics, techniques, and theory in areas that traditionally are not set up to function like a game. The purpose of this study was to define gamification …

Experiences Of Coping With Injury In Division I Athletes From Low-To-Middle Socioeconomic Status Backgrounds, Matthew Philip Bejar Jan 2013

Experiences Of Coping With Injury In Division I Athletes From Low-To-Middle Socioeconomic Status Backgrounds, Matthew Philip Bejar

Master's Theses

Injuries inevitably occur in any sport at any level. The integrated sport injury model is one of the most extensive frameworks to address the psychological responses to athletic injury. While this model posits that socioeconomic status (SES) influences how an athlete cognitively, emotionally, and behaviorally responds to an injury, no research has substantiated this claim. Low SES individuals experience an exceptional amount of stress, which may complicate how they cope with a negative event. The coping strategies employed by an athlete can have major implications on rehabilitation adherence, recovery time, and psychosocial well-being. The purpose of this study was to …

An Examination Of American Sport For Development And Peace Interns' Program Experiences, Michael Sanh Dao Jan 2013

An Examination Of American Sport For Development And Peace Interns' Program Experiences, Michael Sanh Dao

Master's Theses

Sport for Development and Peace (SDP) is an international development movement that uses sport to address international humanitarian issues, including education on preventing HIV/AIDS, peaceful resolutions in communities experiencing conflict, and establishing gender equality in male-dominated societies. The emergence of SDP as a branch of international development over the last decade has garnered much attention. National governments, non-governmental organizations, and scholars have involved themselves in the process of SDP. The attention that SDP has attracted by these parties has been both practical and theoretical. Scholarly studies by prior researchers on SDP have included suggestions on best practices, and how people …

We used the Amazon Mechanical Turk to recruit participants and Survey Monkey to conduct an online survey. Participants were 174 men and women who worked or studied in STEM fields. Two-step hierarchical linear regression analyses were performed to analyze the data. As a result, we found that all predictors mentioned above accounted for the variance in the intention to leave a job. Self-esteem and …

"All Things Forget The Forest": The Convergence Of The War And The Pastoral In Edward Thomas's Body Of Work, Nicole Trobaugh Jan 2013

"All Things Forget The Forest": The Convergence Of The War And The Pastoral In Edward Thomas's Body Of Work, Nicole Trobaugh

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Edward Thomas, often identified as a war poet, eludes definitive characterization despite the fact that his poems are often anthologized as war poems. However, unlike other widely-known war poets, such as Siegfried Sassoon and Wilfred Owen, the imagery present in Thomas's poetry contains much subtlety and features dominant usage of nature themes. This project attempts to navigate the multi-faceted world of Edward Thomas through consideration of his love for nature, his melancholic predispositions, and his preoccupations with the looming Great War in order to study Thomas's use of natural imagery in the context of grief, melancholy, and traumatic experience. To …

The Effect Of Socioeconomic Status On Student Perceptions Of Instructional Communication Behaviors, Samuel A. Crecelius Jan 2013

The Effect Of Socioeconomic Status On Student Perceptions Of Instructional Communication Behaviors, Samuel A. Crecelius

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In spite of desegregation and efforts to provide equitable education for all students, minorities and students living in poverty continue to underperform their peers. Education theorists have attributed this achievement gap to a cultural mismatch between students and their teachers and schools. At the same time, instructional communication research has found that cultural differences may influence student perceptions of teacher communication behaviors and that these behaviors have an effect on learning outcomes. Interestingly, while race has received extensive study in the instructional communication literature, little research has examined the role of socioeconomic status on students' perceptions of instructor communication behaviors. …

Diurnal And Nocturnal Avian Antipredator Behavior In Thermally Challenging Conditions, Jennie M. Carr Jan 2013

Diurnal And Nocturnal Avian Antipredator Behavior In Thermally Challenging Conditions, Jennie M. Carr

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Diurnal avian antipredator behavior has been the focus of much past research, yet the influence of the thermal environment on such behaviors is often overlooked. Far less is known about nocturnal avian antipredator behavior, including how these behaviors are influenced by challenging thermal environments. The first portion of my research focused on how the thermal environment influences the diurnal antipredator behavior of wintering birds while (i) exposed to high wind speeds, (ii) foraging in sunlit and shaded microhabitats, and (iii) when using thermoregulatory postures to conserve body heat. In addition to increasing convective heat loss, high wind speeds increase the …

Self-report measures assessed the use of emotion regulation strategies (ERQ), changes in …

Self-Expansion And Breakups: Effects On Possessions, Caroline Sandrick Jan 2013

Self-Expansion And Breakups: Effects On Possessions, Caroline Sandrick

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The current study strives to understand the influence of breakups on the expanded self and its representation through possessions. The self-expansion theory (Aron & Aron, 1986) states that involving oneself in a romantic relationship alters one's sense of self by taking on the partner's characteristics and qualities and integrating them into the self. The study examined the reported self-expansion in the relationship and the couple representativeness of a possession to see if this affected the outcome of the possessions (kept vs. discarded). Participants were asked to report their three favorite possessions and five possessions they would keep (or kept) and …

The survey was conducted through Qualtrics with privacy protection. The Statistical Package of the Social Science (SPSS) was used and multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA), multiple regression, and Pearson product-moment correlation tests …

Funding Sources Of Impactful And Transformative Research, Barrett Anderson Jan 2013

Funding Sources Of Impactful And Transformative Research, Barrett Anderson

Master's Theses

Understanding how the most important scientific articles have been funded can help inform and improve future funding decisions. Importance is here defined as science that, in the metaphor of the tree of knowledge, plays a structurally significant role (e.g., creates new branches of knowledge or transforms existing ones). The structural significance of articles is broken down into two submeasures: citation count and "generativity" (a novel measure defined as being highly cited and also leading to a comparatively large number of other highly cited articles). Generativity is an attempt to provide a quantitative operationalization that should correlate with transformativeness, a concept …

From Collaboration To Consolidation: Developing A More Expansive Model For Responding To Family Violence, Deseriee A. Kennedy

Scholarly Works

Academics and activists have frequently called for increased collaboration and communication between domestic violence and child welfare agencies as a means of more effectively responding to the impact of domestic violence on children and in recognition of the co-occurrence of domestic violence and child maltreatment. This Article reviews whether efforts based on the Greenbook and other initiatives calling for collaboration have led to any appreciable decrease in family violence. The Article finds evidence to suggest that there has not been significant improvement in the incidence or severity of family violence and more radical responses to family violence are needed. It …

The School-To-Prison Pipeline Tragedy On Montana's American Indian Reservations, Melina Healey Jan 2013

The School-To-Prison Pipeline Tragedy On Montana's American Indian Reservations, Melina Healey

Scholarly Works

American Indian adolescents in Montana are caught in a school-to-prison pipeline. They are plagued with low academic achievement, high dropout, suspension and expulsion rates, and disproportionate contact with the juvenile and criminal justice systems. This phenomenon has been well documented in poor, minority communities throughout the country. But it has received little attention with respect to the American Indian population in Montana, for whom the problem is particularly acute. Indeed, the pipeline is uniquely disturbing for American Indian youth in Montana because this same population has been affected by another heartbreaking and related trend: alarming levels of adolescent suicides and …

Roberts that the use of the “Like” feature in Facebook is not covered by the Free Speech Clause, this article makes a brief foray into the approach that courts have taken in the recent past towards questions of First Amendment coverage in the context of emerging technologies. Specifically, this article will take a closer look at how courts have dealt with the issue of functionality in the context of First Amendment coverage of computer source code. The analysis of this and other recent experiences, when put in a larger context, …

The State Of Israel’S Constitution; A Comparison Of Civilized Nations, Mark Goldfeder Jan 2013

The State Of Israel’S Constitution; A Comparison Of Civilized Nations, Mark Goldfeder

Scholarly Works

The art of constitution-making is never one-dimensional. In regard to the United States' model, it has recently been argued that "[d]espite the enormous literature on the critical period, including the foreign affairs imperatives behind the movement for reform, it is not fully understood that the animus behind the reform effort that culminated in the new Constitution was a desire to ensure that the United States would be in a position to meet its international commitments and thereby earn international recognition."' While there are obvious differences, and while this concept is perhaps of even greater importance and more poignantly felt for …

Not All Dogs Go To Heaven: Judaism’S Lessons In Beastly Morality, Mark Goldfeder Jan 2013

Not All Dogs Go To Heaven: Judaism’S Lessons In Beastly Morality, Mark Goldfeder

Scholarly Works

This Essay examines the moral status of animals and the definition of humanity under traditional Jewish law, as contained in Biblical texts and commentaries by ancient and historical Jewish scholars. Examining whether animals are capable of moral behavior, it provides examples from various Judaic sources to support the idea that animals are capable of making conscious, moral choices. This Essay goes on to investigate the effect that morality has on the rights and rewards given to animals under Jewish law, and whether, as conscious moral actors, animals have souls. Turning more broadly to the definition of humanity, this Essay discusses …

Law And Religion For Nonhuman Persons, Mark Goldfeder Jan 2013

Law And Religion For Nonhuman Persons, Mark Goldfeder

Scholarly Works

On December 2, 2013, the Nonhuman Rights Project (NHRP), a national nonprofit organization working to get actual legal rights for members of nonhuman species filed a lawsuit in Fulton County, New York petitioning the judges for a writ of habeas corpus. A habeas corpus allows for a person being held captive to be brought before a court to determine if their imprisonment is lawful. Habeas corpus suits are filed all the time; what made this one historic was that it was not filed for a human being. The writ in question asked the court to formally recognize that a 26 …
