A Review Of Existing Microgrid Architectures, Lubna Mariam, Malabika Basu, Michael Conlon

Articles

The future electricity network must be flexible, accessible, reliable, and economic according to the worldwide smartgrid initiative. This is also echoed by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) and European Electricity Grid Initiative (EEGI). In order to facilitate these objectives and to reduce green house gas (GHG) emission, research on various configurations of microgrid system is gaining importance, particularly with high penetration of renewable energy sources. Depending on the resource availability, geographical locations, load demand, and existing electrical transmission and distribution system, uG can be either connected to 6the grid or can work in an autonomous mode. Storage can …

Selection Of Design Parameters To Reduce The Zero-Sequence Circulating Current Flow In Parallel Operation Of Dc Linked Multiple Shunt Apf Units, Shafiuzzaman Khadem, Malabika Basu, Michael Conlon Jan 2013

Selection Of Design Parameters To Reduce The Zero-Sequence Circulating Current Flow In Parallel Operation Of Dc Linked Multiple Shunt Apf Units, Shafiuzzaman Khadem, Malabika Basu, Michael Conlon

Articles

Capacity enhancement and operational flexibility are two of the important limitations of the centralized shunt APF unit. These limitations can be conquered by the operation of multiple APF units in parallel and connected back to back by a common DC link capacitor. In that case, a circulating current (CC) flows within the APF units. This CC flow becomes out of control when the APF units operate in hysteresis based current controlled mode. One of the difficulties of this CC flow control or reduction is the variable switching frequency of the APF units. In this paper the model for CC flow …

Media Use And Source Trust Among Muslims In Seven Countries: Results Of A Large Random Sample Survey, Steven R. Corman, Steven Hitchcock

Journal of Strategic Security

Despite the perceived importance of media in the spread of and resistance against Islamist extremism, little is known about how Muslims use different kinds of media to get information about religious issues, and what sources they trust when doing so. This paper reports the results of a large, random sample survey among Muslims in seven countries Southeast Asia, West Africa and Western Europe, which helps fill this gap. Results show a diverse set of profiles of media use and source trust that differ by country, with overall low trust in mediated sources of information. Based on these findings, we conclude …

Numerical Solution Of The Helmholtz Equation For The Superellipsoid Via The Galerkin Method For The Dirichlet Problem, Yajni Warnapala, Hy Dinh Jan 2013

Numerical Solution Of The Helmholtz Equation For The Superellipsoid Via The Galerkin Method For The Dirichlet Problem, Yajni Warnapala, Hy Dinh

Arts & Sciences Faculty Publications

The objective of this work was to find the numerical solution of the Dirichlet problem for the Helmholtz equation fora smooth superellipsoid. The superellipsoid is a shape that is controlled by two parameters. There are some numerical issues in this type of an analysis; any integration method is affected by the wave number k, because of the oscillatory behavior of the fundamental solution. In this case we could only obtain good numerical results for super ellipsoids that were more shaped like super cones, which is a narrow range of super ellipsoids. The formula for these shapes was: x = cos …

Effect Of Buckwheat (Fagopyrum Esculentum) On Soil Phosphorus Availability And Organic Acids, Angela R. Possinger, Loren B. Byrne, Nancy Breen E. Breen Jan 2013

Effect Of Buckwheat (Fagopyrum Esculentum) On Soil Phosphorus Availability And Organic Acids, Angela R. Possinger, Loren B. Byrne, Nancy Breen E. Breen

Arts & Sciences Faculty Publications

As a cover crop, buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum) may increase soil-P availability. Buckwheat was grown in low-P and P-fertilized field plots, and organic anions were measured in rhizosphere soil. Soil-P availability was not affected by buckwheat, but the concentration of rhizosphere tartrate2– was significantly higher (p < 0.005) in low-P vs. P-fertilized plots. This suggests that organic-anion root exudation may have a role in buckwheat-rhizosphere P dynamics.

An In-Class Role-Playing Activity To Foster Discussion And Deeper Understanding Of Biodiversity And Ecological Webs, Loren B. Byrne Jan 2013

An In-Class Role-Playing Activity To Foster Discussion And Deeper Understanding Of Biodiversity And Ecological Webs, Loren B. Byrne

Arts & Sciences Faculty Publications

In a general sense, biodiversity is an intuitively simple concept, referring to the variety of Earth’s organisms. Ecologists, however, conceptualize biodiversity in a more nuanced, multidimensional way to reflect the enormous diversity of species, niches, and interspecific interactions that generate spatiotemporal complexity in communities. Students may not fully comprehend or appreciate this deeper meaning if they fail to recognize the full range of species in a community (e.g., the often-ignored microbes and small invertebrates) and how their varied interactions (e.g., mutualism, parasitism) and activities (e.g., ecosystem engineering) affect an ecosystem’s emergent structure (e.g., food webs) and function (e.g., decomposition). To …

Data obtained from the National Assessment of Adult Literacy (2003) indicate that 29% of adults have a Basic level of prose literacy. Prose literacy refers to the knowledge and skills needed to comprehend and use information from continuous texts, such as editorials, news stories, and instructional materials. In the current study we examined each state’s capital sentencing instructions for their readability using a highly reliable word-analysis tool. We found that reading levels of sentencing instructions significantly surpassed the reading comprehension abilities of American adults. All but three states’ instructions were above the twelfth grade reading level. In addition, legal principles …

Morphology, Structure, Function And Evolution Of Infrastaminal Scales In Cuscuta (Convolvulaceae), Stephanie Riviere Jan 2013

Morphology, Structure, Function And Evolution Of Infrastaminal Scales In Cuscuta (Convolvulaceae), Stephanie Riviere

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Cuscuta (dodder, Convolvulaceae) is a genus of about 200 species of obligate stem parasites of cosmopolitan distribution. Infrastaminal scales (IFS) are staminode-like formations that surround the ovary in the flowers of dodders. Their morphological diversity has historically provided some of the most useful taxonomic diagnostic characters at the species-level, however, their function had not been determined. I performed a comparative study of the IFS in 147 taxa using light, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, and results were analyzed in relation to a Cuscuta phylogeny obtained from a combined analysis of rbcL and 26S rDNA gene sequences. To test the hypothesis …

Partnerships between Hospitals and Community: A Qualitative Study on Collaboration for Spiritual Care in Healthcare

Abstract:

Hospital-Community Collaborative (HCC) arrangements for the provision of spiritual care have been brokered in certain Ontario hospitals with varying degrees of success. The current study investigated how a community based organization could effectively partner with a healthcare institution to ensure spiritual care support for hospital patients. It asked the question: What factors are essential to make a hospital-community collaboration function well as a model for the provision of spiritual care? Qualitative research was conducted with four hospital corporations with HCC partnerships to ascertain the …

Treatment Of Reverse Osmosis Brine With Advanced Oxidative Processes For Enhanced Phosphorus Removal, Petrease Patton Jan 2013

Treatment Of Reverse Osmosis Brine With Advanced Oxidative Processes For Enhanced Phosphorus Removal, Petrease Patton

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Current regulations for sensitive receiving waters are approaching the limit of technology for phosphorus removal and improved methods are required. Existing methods target removal of the orthophosphate form of phosphorus, but to achieve low effluent limits other non-reactive (NRP) forms, such as condensed phosphate and organic phosphorus, must be removed as well. This could be accomplished by developing a quaternary step in wastewater treatment that utilizes reverse osmosis (RO) followed by advanced oxidation processes (AOP) on the produced brine (RO concentrate). The objective during advanced treatment is to convert NRP in the brine to reactive phosphorus for removal by traditional …

Lumped Time-Delay Compensation Scheme For Coding Synchronization In The Nonlinear Spectral Quantization-Based All-Optical Analog-To-Digital Conversion, Zhe Khang, Jinhui Yuan, Qiang Wu, Tao Wang, Sha Li, Chongxiu Y, Gerald Farrell

Articles

this paper, we propose a novel lumped time-delay compensation scheme for the all-optical analog-to-digital conversion based on soliton self-frequency shift and optical interconnection techniques. By inserting a segment of negative dispersion fiber between the quantization and the coding module, the time delay of different quantized pulses can be accurately compensated with a simple structure compared to the multiple time-delay lines. The simulation results show that the coding pulses can be well synchronized using a span of fiber, with the flattened negative dispersion within the wavelength range of 1558-1620 nm. In addition, the problems of pulse broadening and time error are …

Development Of Marker-Based Human Motion Capture Systems For Assembly Simulation And Ergonomic Analysis, Sajeev C. Puthenveetil Jan 2013

Development Of Marker-Based Human Motion Capture Systems For Assembly Simulation And Ergonomic Analysis, Sajeev C. Puthenveetil

Masters Theses

"In aerospace industry, the assembly operator is often exposed to potential ergonomic injuries due to awkward postures while working in confined spaces. Manually generating worker postures in simulation software for ergonomic analysis is cumbersome. This research focuses on the use of marker-based optical motion capture technology to generate human motion simulations in real-time for ergonomic analysis. To address the challenges involved in capturing human motions in a real work environment, an assembly operation was simulated in a four-walled Computer Automated Virtual Environment (CAVE) which provides an immersive 3D environment to the worker performing the assembly operation. Multiple cameras were set-up …

Territorial Issues, Audience Costs, And The Democratic Peace: The Importance Of Issue Salience, Douglas M. Gibler, Marc L. Hutchinson Jan 2013

Territorial Issues, Audience Costs, And The Democratic Peace: The Importance Of Issue Salience, Douglas M. Gibler, Marc L. Hutchinson

Political Science Faculty Publications

Democratic leaders are more prone to domestic sanction following defeats, and these audience costs allow democracies to signal their intentions during public disputes. Empirical tests strongly support this relationship; however, recent criticisms have questioned whether the causal mechanisms of audience costs are responsible for these findings. We provide a unified rationale for why both arguments are correct: democracies rarely contend over territorial issues, a consistently salient and contentious issue. Without these issues, leaders are unable to generate audience costs but are able to choose easy conflicts. Our reexaminations of threat-based and reciprocation-based studies support this argument. We also present tests …

A New Simplified Federated Single Sign-On System, Chen Liang Jan 2013

A New Simplified Federated Single Sign-On System, Chen Liang

Masters

The work presented in this MPhil thesis addresses this challenge by developing a new simplified FSSO system that allows end-users to access desktop systems, web-based services/applications and non-web based services/applications using one authentication process. This new system achieves this using two major components: an “Authentication Infrastructure Integration Program (AIIP)" and an “Integration of Desktop Authentication and Web-based Authentication (IDAWA)." The AIIP acquires Kerberos tickets (for end-users who have been authenticated by a Kerberos single sign-on system in one net- work domain) from Kerberos single sign-on systems in different network domains without establishing trust between these Kerberos single sign-on systems. The …
