The Role Of Agency In Community Health Outcomes: Local Health Departments And Childhood Immunization Coverage Rates, James Anthony Ransom Jan 2013

The Role Of Agency In Community Health Outcomes: Local Health Departments And Childhood Immunization Coverage Rates, James Anthony Ransom

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

Organizational culture is defined as a system of shared meaning held by members of an organization that distinguishes it from other organizations. How organizational culture is experienced in the public sector, particularly local health departments (LHDs), is not well understood. The purpose of this study was to determine whether LHD organizational culture impacts childhood immunization coverage rates. I used a modified organizational culture survey tool, the Organizational Management Survey, to quantify organizational culture and determine whether an LHD's organizational culture helps explain variations in childhood immunization coverage rates. In addition, qualitative data from an earlier study of LHD immunization staff …

Exploring Tribal College And University (Tcu) Faculty Collegiality, Nora Antoine

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

This dissertation study explores Tribal College and University (TCU) faculty collegiality utilizing qualitative and indigenous research methodology approaches. Since collegiality is a multidimensional construct, a Rolling Survey process was developed to provide a vehicle for discussion. Within focus group settings, TCU faculty participants created a composite about their relationships, communications, and professional development. Dialogue affirmed important professional relationships and explored issues that contribute or detract from TCU faculty work experiences. The results of this study further suggest wider applications for leadership and businesses in general, affirming the importance of and the need to support professional working relationships. The electronic version …

Melungeon Portraits: Lived Experience And Identity, Tamara L. Stachowicz Jan 2013

Melungeon Portraits: Lived Experience And Identity, Tamara L. Stachowicz

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

The desire to claim an ethnicity may be in response to an institutional and systemic political movement towards multiculturalism where ethnic difference is something to be recognized and celebrated (Jimenez, 2010; Tatum, 1997). Those who were a member of a dominant or advantaged group took that element of their identity for granted (Tatum, 1997). Identity work has included reflections and congruence between how individuals see themselves and how they perceive others to see them, including Optimal Distinctiveness Theory where one determines the optimal amount of individual distinctiveness needed to feel a healthy group and personal identity (Brewer, 2012). When most …

Measuring Normlessness In The Workplace: A Study Of Organizational Anomie In The Academic Setting, Tayo Glenn Switzer Jan 2013

Measuring Normlessness In The Workplace: A Study Of Organizational Anomie In The Academic Setting, Tayo Glenn Switzer

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

The dissertation explores leadership and change by examining normlessness in the workplace through a multi-layered study of anomie theory, anomie research in the workplace, and organizational and business management theory. The research validates a quantitative survey designed to measure the level of normlessness experienced by workgroups within an organizational context. The survey reflects a set of six normative aspects that when disrupted produce organizational anomie—a state of normlessness that leads to an increase in worker resistance and a reduction in worker consent. The audience studied in this dissertation is associate professors at a large Midwestern research university. Data were gathered …

A Look Into The Lived Experiences Of College Students With Asperger's Disorder, Joshua Bryan Lafortune

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

Currently there is confusion about how to meet the educational needs of students diagnosed with Asperger's Disorder (AD). This is a growing concern for schools where there has been a significant increase in the use of this diagnostic category (Barnhill, 2001). This research project was developed to investigate the lived experiences of college students with a previously identified diagnosis of AD. The aim of this study was to gain a greater understanding of how these students managed the academic and social demands of middle school and high school. Of particular importance were the transitional years during adolescence, where social competence …

A Meta-Analysis Of Cultural Differences In Revenge And Forgiveness, Rachelle Evelyn Lennon Jan 2013

A Meta-Analysis Of Cultural Differences In Revenge And Forgiveness, Rachelle Evelyn Lennon

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Revenge, the act of retaliating against a person or group in response to a perceived wrongdoing, appears to be a human universal. Those who research culture, revenge, and forgiveness have indicated cultural differences, but no clear patterns have emerged that could be useful in mediating conflicts. Thus, a meta-analysis was conducted of studies in which people from two different countries were compared on a measure of revenge or forgiveness. The countries represented were also coded based on Geert Hofstede's national culture dimensions, to test whether any specific cultural characteristics moderated desire for revenge. The final sample was made up of …

[Introduction To] Couched In Death: Klinai And Identity In Anatolia And Beyond, Elizabeth P. Baughan Jan 2013

[Introduction To] Couched In Death: Klinai And Identity In Anatolia And Beyond, Elizabeth P. Baughan

Bookshelf

In Couched in Death, Elizabeth P. Baughan offers the first comprehensive look at the earliest funeral couches in the ancient Mediterranean world. These sixth- and fifth-century BCE klinai from Asia Minor were inspired by specialty luxury furnishings developed in Archaic Greece for reclining at elite symposia. It was in Anatolia, however—in the dynastic cultures of Lydia and Phrygia and their neighbors—that klinai first gained prominence not as banquet furniture but as burial receptacles. For tombs, wooden couches were replaced by more permanent media cut from bedrock, carved from marble or limestone, or even cast in bronze. The rich archaeological …

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Global warming is a well-documented concern. If left unabated, many scientists believe that global warming could potentially have devastating impacts to life on earth. Current research points to greenhouse gas emissions caused by the burning of fossil fuels to produce electricity as one of the primary causes of global warming. The more electricity produced and consumed the more greenhouse gas emissions are released to the atmosphere. Industry is one of the most significant consumers of electricity. Within industry, manufacturing accounts for a significant majority of all energy consumed with machine tools being one of the largest consumers. Machine tool builders …

However, the validity of this capability has yet to be researched. Objective: To determine the validity of using IASTM to detect myofascial adhesions through secondary diagnostic ultrasound analysis. Design: Correlational validity study. Setting: Athletic Training Laboratory. Patients or other participants: nineteen men (age = 22.4 ± 2.5) …

Ethical Dimensions Of Corporate Governance Practice In Ghana: Building A Theoretical Perspective, Mark Boadu Jan 2013

Ethical Dimensions Of Corporate Governance Practice In Ghana: Building A Theoretical Perspective, Mark Boadu

Plymouth Business School Theses

Having dominated policy agenda in developed economies for well over three decades, corporate governance is now getting to the top of the policy agenda in developing countries (Abor and Adjasi, 2007). However, the issues of corporate governance have focused on the major shareholders and institutional shareholders of the organization while little or no attention has been paid to public sector and the private enterprises in developing countries. This has been ignored by the literature. This study investigates the ethical dimensions of corporate governance practice in Ghanaian public sector and private enterprises. It aims to understand the phenomena of governance practices …

The Correspondence Of Attachment Dimensions To Prayer Styles Among Undergraduate Students, Nathaniel Lamkin Jan 2013

The Correspondence Of Attachment Dimensions To Prayer Styles Among Undergraduate Students, Nathaniel Lamkin

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Despite the fact that prayer is a daily practice for many Americans, and is considered by some the heart and soul of spirituality, relatively little research has been conducted to understand the individual differences of people's prayer styles. A previous study found that people who have higher levels of avoidance attachment are less likely to engage in prayers that are designed to facilitate a closer relationship with God (e.g., Meditative and Colloquial). It also found that people who have higher levels of anxious attachment are more likely to engage in help seeking types of prayers (e.g., Petitionary). Since the study, …

An Expedient Synthesis Of 6-Vinylfulvene, İhsan Erden, Jenny Sabol, Ana Gubeladze, Andrea Ruiz

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

6-Vinylfulvenes constitute a class of fulvenes that are difficult to access due to the lack of a general method for their synthesis. In particular, the unsubstituted parent system has been very difficult to obtain by existing methods. In this communication we describe a convenient 3-step protocol for the synthesis of the title compound by way of sulfide oxidation and subsequent sulfoxide elimination.

Optimization Of A Gas Chromatography--Mass Spectrometry Method Using Chemometric Techniques For The Determination Of Ezetimibe In Human Plasma, Ebru Uçaktürk, Nuran Özaltin

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

A new, rapid, and sensitive gas chromatography--mass spectrometry (GC-MS) method was developed for the determination of ezetimibe (EZE) in human plasma. EZE was derivatized prior to GC-MS analysis. Various derivatization techniques such as acetylation, methylation, and silylation were tried. EZE was extracted from plasma with high recovery (94.39%--97.57%) using methyl tertbutyl ether and carbonate buffer (pH 9). Chromatographic conditions were optimized using chemometric methods. In the first step, optimization with factorial design, chromatographic variables (initial and final column temperature, oven ramp rate, and flow rate of gas) were screened to select important variables for the retention of EZE. In the …

Verbal Response Modes In Action:Microrelationships As The Building Blocks Of Relationship Role Dimensions, Ayesha Shaikh, Lynne M. Knobloch-Fedders, William B. Stiles Jan 2013

Verbal Response Modes In Action:Microrelationships As The Building Blocks Of Relationship Role Dimensions, Ayesha Shaikh, Lynne M. Knobloch-Fedders, William B. Stiles

Psychology Faculty Research and Publications

Dimensions of interpersonal relationships, such as attentiveness, directiveness, and presumptuousness, have typically been assessed through impressionistic ratings or by aggregate scores derived from coding of specific (e.g., verbal) behaviors. However, the meanings of these dimensions rest on the interpersonal microrelationships that are actually observed by the raters or coders. In this qualitative study, the way these global relationship qualities were built from microrelationships at the utterance level was examined in passages from one medical interaction. Applications of microrelationships to future communications research are suggested.

Predicting Impact Of Maintenance Resource Management Training Utilizing Individual Difference Variables, Erin E. Bowen Jan 2013

Predicting Impact Of Maintenance Resource Management Training Utilizing Individual Difference Variables, Erin E. Bowen

Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research

Human error has been identified as a leading cause of accidents and incidents in many "high-consequence" industries, such as aviation and medicine. These industries have evolved widespread employee training programs to prevent such errors or to mitigate their impact on the public. In addition, common perceptions exist in these industries regarding the role of age, employee tenure, and type of position held in an employee's responsiveness to such training. This study was conducted to identify the predictive role individual difference variables may play in the impact of maintenance resource management training programs in an aviation maintenance setting. Using multiple regression …

A Design For Inspiring Students With Near-Space Exploration, Jeremy Straub, Gail Ingwalson, Ronald Fevig Jan 2013

A Design For Inspiring Students With Near-Space Exploration, Jeremy Straub, Gail Ingwalson, Ronald Fevig

Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research

The prevalence of overseas success in engineering education represents a significant threat to the United States. Once the dominant force in advancing technology, the U.S. is seeing significant amounts of research and development work moving overseas. U.S. competitiveness and increased productivity requires demand for high-value-added products (Porter & Rivkin, 2012) such as those designed and developed by those with advanced training in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) disciplines. The U.S. economy, thus, depends on the production of skilled scientists and engineers--not just to sustain American leadership in science, but to sustain its national economy.

Examining The Hidden Ideologies Within Cultural Competence Discourses Among Library And Information Science (Lis) Students: Implications For School Library Pedagogy, Kafi D. Kumasi, Renee F. Hill

School of Information Sciences Faculty Research Publications

In order to provide culturally responsive instruction to all students, school library professionals need to recognize the various discourses around cultural competence that exist in the field of library and information science (LIS) and understand the broader meanings that are attached to these discourses. This study presents an evaluation of the underlying ideologies that are embedded in the textual responses of a group of LIS students reporting on their perceived levels of cultural competence preparation. The results reveal that there are dominant and competing discourses around cultural competence in the LIS field, which are important to make visible. The paper …

“Reinventing” Higher Education: Symbolism, Sloganeering, And Subjectivity In The Lone Star State, Staci M. Zavattaro, Terence Garrett Jan 2013

“Reinventing” Higher Education: Symbolism, Sloganeering, And Subjectivity In The Lone Star State, Staci M. Zavattaro, Terence Garrett

Political Science Faculty Publications

Higher education is part and parcel of a market spectacle (Debord 1967/1994; Garrett and Sementelli 2012) that follows some prescriptions of reinventing government (Osborne and Gaebler 1993), essentially charging these institutions with inefficient operations and minimal customer service standards. Following the “reinventing government” qua business model, any semblance of public service (Denhardt and Denhardt 2007) – now including public colleges and universities – that ignores “customers” is under attack. While governance values shifted with these business-based movements (Box, et al 2001), higher education values, too, have moved universities from producing academic capital to economic capital (Naidoo and Jamieson 2005).
