Investigation Of Wastewater Treatment Plant Sustainability Potential In Terms Of Resource Recovery Essentials, Aoife Moloney Jan 2013

Investigation Of Wastewater Treatment Plant Sustainability Potential In Terms Of Resource Recovery Essentials, Aoife Moloney

Theses

This thesis aims to explore the sustainability potential which exists in Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTP's); particularly focusing on nutrient, energy, and water recovery and reuse. The core of the research will focus on the establishment of a sustainable Resource Recovery Treatment Plant (RRTP) plan for Limerick Main Drainage (LMD) WWTP, and potentially utilising this as a case study plant which could act as a foundation example within the sector.

There is a genuine need to investigate more sustainable options in wastewater treatment (WWT); increasing energy and sludge management costs are a real issue for non-sustainable WWTP's given that thousands of …

The Future Of Lobbying For Advocacy Groups Under The Proposed Government Legislation 2013, Maureen Cournane Jan 2013

The Future Of Lobbying For Advocacy Groups Under The Proposed Government Legislation 2013, Maureen Cournane

Theses

In common with most other nations, Ireland currently has no statutory regulation of lobbying activities. This paper considers the pervasive context of political lobbying and analyses various suggestions for lobbying regulation which have been proposed. Lobbying in Ireland has come to the fore of public policy debates given the catastrophic collapse of the Irish economy since late 2008 and the role played by lobbyists in contemporary Irish politics. Ireland prides itself on the ability of all its citizens to have access to their elected representatives. However, there are relatively few professional lobbyists and, for most, their engagement with politicians, officials …

A Review Of Literature On Teaching Evaluation, Martin Reardon Jan 2013

A Review Of Literature On Teaching Evaluation, Martin Reardon

MERC Publications

The members of MERC’s Policy and Planning Council are well aware of the challenges that school divisions are facing as they conscientiously endeavor to honor the stipulations of the Guidelines (2011) in a loosely coupled system. In keeping with the context out of which the request for this literature review arose, a sense of the literature invoked in the Research Base (2011) has been taken for granted. The focus of this document, then, is on literature—predominantly recent literature—that addresses issues associated with the implementation of teacher evaluation. This emphasis on implementation is in keeping with MERC’s mission to engage in …

The Cultural Politics Of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders And The Diagnosis Of Difference, Travis H. Hedwig Jan 2013

The Cultural Politics Of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders And The Diagnosis Of Difference, Travis H. Hedwig

Theses and Dissertations--Anthropology

This dissertation is based on an ethnographic study of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) and the racial, cultural and political considerations that shape the meaning of diagnosis for Alaska Native individuals and families in Anchorage, Alaska. During the period from August 6, 2010 to through August 5, 2011, I worked with foster families and extended natural families living with and supporting individuals diagnosed with FASD. Documenting the experiences of families in their interactions with clinical, state, tribal and non-profit institutions, I sought to understand how a diagnosis of FASD structures opportunities, outcomes and everyday life experiences across several critical life …

The Health Consequences And Healthcare-Seeking Strategies For South American Immigrant Careworkers In Genoa, Italy, Patti A. Meyer Jan 2013

The Health Consequences And Healthcare-Seeking Strategies For South American Immigrant Careworkers In Genoa, Italy, Patti A. Meyer

Theses and Dissertations--Anthropology

This research on healthcare strategies of home-based, low-wage, immigrant careworkers contributes to the ways medical anthropology, migration studies and social science understand human-economy-family care relationships and health and carework as commodities in today's global economy. It reveals the consequences for workers as they defray the costs of care for the Italian government and contribute to their home economies. This research was conducted in Genoa, Italy, which has the largest percentage of people over the age of 70 in any city of its size in the world and a tradition of sending and receiving immigrant workers. The main question was: Under …

Late Archaic To Early Woodland Lithic Technology At The Knob Creek Site (12hr484), Harrison County, Indiana, Kyle E. Mullen

Theses and Dissertations--Anthropology

This study examines bifacial technology change at the Knob Creek site (12HR484) in Harrison County, Indiana, from the Late Archaic to Early Woodland periods. Through a statistical and attribute analysis of 2,620 lithic flakes it was possible to detect changes in the lithic reduction process over time. The analysis demonstrates that soft-hammer percussion becomes more prevalent during the Early Woodland component of the site. This is a significant change from the hard-hammer percussion industry of the Lower Late Archaic. The Terminal Archaic Riverton component in this study offers one of the few detailed flake-by-flake analyses for this poorly understood lithic …

Sex Matters: Considering Gender In Consumer Contracting, Amy J. Schmitz Jan 2013

Sex Matters: Considering Gender In Consumer Contracting, Amy J. Schmitz

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

We hear about the so-called "War on Women" and persisting salary gaps between men and women in the popular media, but contracts scholars and policymakers rarely discuss gender. Instead, dominant voices in the contracts field often reflect classical and economics-driven theories built on assumptions of gender neutral and economically rational actors. Furthermore, many mistakenly assume that market competition and antidiscrimination legislation address any improper biases in contracting. This Article therefore aims to shed light on gender's importance by distilling data from my own e-survey of Colorado consumers along with others' research regarding gender differences in contract outcomes, interests and behaviors. …

The Looking-Glass Ceiling: Appearance-Based Discrimination In The Workplace, Enbar Toledano Jan 2013

The Looking-Glass Ceiling: Appearance-Based Discrimination In The Workplace, Enbar Toledano

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The article examines the phenomenon of appearance-based discrimination, or "lookism," in the workplace, arguing that while physically attractive individuals often receive preferential treatment, the legal system is ill-equipped to address this form of discrimination effectively. It highlights the "what is beautiful is good" stereotype, which perpetuates advantages for attractive individuals in employment, but concludes that legal intervention is not a viable solution due to the subjective and multifaceted nature of attractiveness.

Expanding Rape Shield Laws: Breaking Through Prejudice For Better Protection Of Battered Women, Sarah C. Ayres Jan 2013

Expanding Rape Shield Laws: Breaking Through Prejudice For Better Protection Of Battered Women, Sarah C. Ayres

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The article argues for the expansion of rape shield laws to civil cases involving orders of protection, asserting that the exclusion of evidence regarding consensual sex between a victim and her abuser is crucial to counteract prejudicial stereotypes and provide better legal protection for battered women.

Defamation And False Rape Claims: Policies, Attitudes, And Suggested Reform In The United States And The United Kingdom, Claire Steinman Jan 2013

Defamation And False Rape Claims: Policies, Attitudes, And Suggested Reform In The United States And The United Kingdom, Claire Steinman

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The note examines the legal and societal implications of defamation cases arising from false rape claims in the United States and the United Kingdom. It argues that while U.S. defamation law provides stricter standards for liability, the U.K.'s approach to punishment is more effective in deterring false claims. The optimal solution, the note suggests, is to combine the U.S. legal framework for determining liability with the U.K.'s harsher penalties to protect both the falsely accused and genuine victims.

Crisis Pregnancy Centers: Impeding The Right To Informed Decision Making, Alice X. Chen Jan 2013

Crisis Pregnancy Centers: Impeding The Right To Informed Decision Making, Alice X. Chen

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The note argues that crisis pregnancy centers (CPCs) in the United States engage in deceptive practices to deter women from obtaining abortions, often masquerading as medical facilities while providing misleading information about reproductive health. These centers receive significant funding from federal and state governments, despite their lack of regulation and medical licensure. The note contends that while local governments have attempted to regulate CPCs through ordinances requiring transparency, these efforts have largely been struck down by federal courts on First Amendment grounds. The author advocates for state-level action to protect women's rights to informed decision-making and accurate reproductive healthcare.

The Goldilocks Principle And Informed Consent In Joint-Spouse Representation, Madison Kaplan Jan 2013

The Goldilocks Principle And Informed Consent In Joint-Spouse Representation, Madison Kaplan

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The note explores the complexities of joint legal representation of spouses, emphasizing the need for balanced and clear informed consent. It highlights the challenges posed by conflicting legal guidelines and the necessity of detailed Joint Representation Agreements (JRAs) to navigate confidentiality and communication duties effectively.

Pregnancy Discrimination In Higher Education: Accommodating Student Pregnancy, Emily Mcnee Jan 2013

Pregnancy Discrimination In Higher Education: Accommodating Student Pregnancy, Emily Mcnee

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The article argues that despite Title IX's protections against sex discrimination, pregnant students in higher education continue to face subtle discrimination, particularly through rigid academic policies that fail to accommodate pregnancy-related needs. It advocates for clarifying Title IX regulations to explicitly require schools to provide accommodations, drawing parallels to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) model, to ensure equal educational opportunities for pregnant students.

Criminalization In Shades Of Color: Prosecuting Pregnant Drugaddicted Women, Carla-Michelle Adams Jan 2013

Criminalization In Shades Of Color: Prosecuting Pregnant Drugaddicted Women, Carla-Michelle Adams

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The article argues that criminalizing pregnant women for drug use is both unconstitutional and ineffective. It contends that such prosecutions infringe upon fundamental rights, disproportionately affect minority women, and fail to address the root causes of addiction. The author advocates for a public health approach, emphasizing treatment over punishment to protect both the mother and the fetus.

Abstract

Background

Previous whole-genome shotgun bisulfite sequencing experiments showed that DNA cytosine methylation in the honey bee (Apis mellifera) is almost exclusively at CG dinucleotides in exons. However, the most commonly used method, bisulfite sequencing, cannot distinguish 5-methylcytosine from 5-hydroxymethylcytosine, an oxidized form of 5-methylcytosine that is catalyzed by the TET family of dioxygenases. Furthermore, some analysis software programs under-represent non-CG DNA methylation and hydryoxymethylation for a variety of reasons. Therefore, we used an unbiased analysis of bisulfite sequencing data combined with molecular and bioinformatics approaches to distinguish 5-methylcytosine from 5-hydroxymethylcytosine. By doing this, we have performed the first whole …

Critical Information Literacy And The Technology Of Control: The Case Of Armenia, John Carey, D. Aram Donabedian

Publications and Research

As direct providers of information literacy, librarians can help patrons analyze the social and economic forces involved in the creation and use of information. This chapter will discuss why critical information literacy and critical pedagogy are especially important in the Armenian context, with its unique historical, cultural, and geopolitical concerns. The authors will document how the Armenian government has used cutting-edge Internet controls to block online content or misdirect users. We will also examine how Armenians perceive the independence of their available media and explore current efforts by telecom, publishing, and governmental concerns to restrict Internet freedom. The authors suggest …

The Role Of Video In Early Field Experiences, Laura H. Baecher, Shiao-Chuan Kung, Abigail M. Jewkes, Christine Rosalia

Publications and Research

The purpose of this investigation was to explore the influence of video models on teacher candidates' capacity to self-evaluate their teaching performance in early fieldwork. This was examined by providing video models along with evaluation rubrics that represented desired performance standard to one group of pre-service teacher candidates, while another group was provided the descriptions of these lessons and corresponding evaluation rubrics. Participants then video recorded their teaching and self-evaluated this performance. Results indicated that the introduction of video models reduced inflation of scores in self-evaluation and enhanced candidates' understanding of the expectations for the performance assessment of teaching.

Biking As An Alternative Mode Of Transportation, Roslynn Brain, Jared Stapp

Environment and Society Faculty Publications

With this fact sheet, you can overcome common barriers keeping you from becoming your own mode of transportation, and bettering your life because of it. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, “creating new infrastructure and altering existing infrastructure to accommodate bicycling and walking has become a goal for several metropolitan planning organizations across the United States” (McKenzie & Rapino, 2011). Now is a great time to take advantage of this shifting focus away from vehicle commuting and delve into a healthier and cheaper mode of transportation: Cycling.
