Sexual Risk Behaviors Among Adolescents In Port-Au-Prince, Haiti, Jasmine Winslow Carver Jan 2013

Sexual Risk Behaviors Among Adolescents In Port-Au-Prince, Haiti, Jasmine Winslow Carver

Public Health Theses

Introduction: In the past decade, young people in Haiti have been engaging in riskier sexual behavior. The present study investigates correlates of sexual risk behaviors among adolescents in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

Methods: The cross-sectional study included anonymous face-to-face interviews with 200 (108 male and 92 female) 13 to 18 year old participants. Data were collected on demographic, family and psychosocial characteristics and four sexual risk outcomes: having a history of sexual intercourse, early sexual debut, multiple sexual partners and condom use at last sexual intercourse. Unadjusted and adjusted logistic regression models were generated for each outcome and a composite sexual risk …

Categorical Vs. Dimensional Models Of Mental Health Assessment, Nic Stewart Jan 2013

Categorical Vs. Dimensional Models Of Mental Health Assessment, Nic Stewart

Honors Program Theses

The model that is currently in place is the categorical model and its use has been widespread since 1980 when the DSM-III was published and used internationally for categorical assessment (Mayes & Horwitz, 2005). It has since been widely utilized by professionals, but is not without flaws. Based on the argument for an alternative approach, researchers have argued several limitations of the categorical model: that no true discrete mental illness can be reasonably operationalized by categorical measures; that negative stigmas can accompany a diagnosis of mental illness; that there is inherent uncertainty when making diagnoses, whether to perceive certain information …

Defensive Communication Between Professors And Students And Its Effects On Student Outcomes, Alexa Pomerenk Jan 2013

Defensive Communication Between Professors And Students And Its Effects On Student Outcomes, Alexa Pomerenk

Honors Program Theses

This study investigated the relationship between defensive communication and student outcomes in college classrooms. The researcher hypothesized that students would perceive a greater defensive climate in classes taught by their least favorite professors, and that the defensive climate would encourage the use of coping mechanisms. Defensive communication was also hypothesized to negatively affect student grades, attendance, and course satisfaction and to increase student burnout. Surveys were administered to college students, and results supported all hypotheses. Findings showed that students linked defensive attributes to their least favorite professors more frequently than they did to their favorite professors, and they reported using …

A Comparison Of Brazil And The United States: How Higher Education Can Shape And Be Shaped By History, Politics, Culture, And Economy, Cassandra Mae Oliveira Jan 2013

A Comparison Of Brazil And The United States: How Higher Education Can Shape And Be Shaped By History, Politics, Culture, And Economy, Cassandra Mae Oliveira

Honors Program Theses

This thesis will argue that, in order to cooperate, negotiate, and coexist in the future with Brazil, it is necessary to understand the way in which Brazil is educating its youth in comparison to how the United States is doing so since the products of these educational systems are the future leaders of their nations. Also, this thesis will analyze the reasons these educational institutions evolved so differently by reviewing how they were influenced by the intricate histories, the differing political leadership, the eccentric cultures, and the fluctuating economies of each nation. It will also evaluate how these different university …

The Chicago Americanization Movement: Solutions To The Immigrant Problem, Heather Greel Jan 2013

The Chicago Americanization Movement: Solutions To The Immigrant Problem, Heather Greel

Honors Program Theses

Our nation is in the midst of an increase in immigration from Mexico, an increase which many policy makers have called a “crisis”. This “crisis” has left our nation, and specifically educators, asking, “What do we do with these millions of immigrants, and their children, who are so different from us?” This concern over an influx of “others” is the basis of a long struggle between the native-born and immigrants. In fact, the rhetoric used today in reference to the current “immigrant problem” is a direct reflection of the ideas developed one hundred years ago, during the first Americanization movement …

Going Offline: Personality And Its Effects On The Transition Of Online Relationships To The Offline World, Morgan Johnson Jan 2013

Going Offline: Personality And Its Effects On The Transition Of Online Relationships To The Offline World, Morgan Johnson

Honors Program Theses

Because the internet is a relatively new technology, few studies have researched the correlations between online behavior and personality. As such, this study set out to determine if online friendships and personality are related. In this study differences in personality were examined between individuals who have met their online friends face-to-face and those who have not. A survey was distributed online using the Five Factor Model to measure personality. Participants in this study were recruited from an online community called Nerdfighteria. The results found that the facets of the Five Factor Model of personality were largely found not to be …

Clean Up Our Home: Ellen Swallow Richards' Human Ecology And Emerging Environmental Ideologies, 1890-1915, Raeann Lillian Swanson

Honors Program Theses

In the late 1880s, after years of study and hard work, Ellen Richards began publishing her ideas on the home and the natural and urban environment. She called for the knowledge of basic scientific principles to be available to everyone. She believed that ignorance was holding back the public from altering their environment to make life healthier, happier, and safer. Over one hundred years later, Malcolm Gladwell wrote the book The Tipping Point. In his book, Gladwell explores the Broken Windows Theory that social scientists claimed they developed in the 1980s. The Broken Windows Theory states that there is a …

Scholarly Works

In this review, the evolution of new P300-based protocols for detection of concealed information is summarized. The P300-based complex trial protocol (CTP) is described as one such countermeasure (CM)-resistant protocol. Recent lapses in diagnostic accuracy (from 90% to 75%) with CTPs applied to mock crime protocols are summarized, as well as recent enhancements to the CTP which have restored accuracy. These enhancements include 1) use of performance feedback during testing, 2) use of other ERP components such as N200 in diagnosis, 3) use of auxiliary tests, including the autobiographical implicit association test, as leading to restored diagnostic accuracy, and 4) …

Using Physically-Modeled Synthetic Data To Assess Hyperspectral Unmixing Approaches, Mathew Stites, Jacob Gunther, Todd Moon, Gustavious Williams Jan 2013

Using Physically-Modeled Synthetic Data To Assess Hyperspectral Unmixing Approaches, Mathew Stites, Jacob Gunther, Todd Moon, Gustavious Williams

Space Dynamics Laboratory Publications

This paper considers an experimental approach for assessing algorithms used to exploit remotely sensed data. The approach employs synthetic images that are generated using physical models to make them more realistic while still providing ground truth data for quantitative evaluation. This approach complements the common approach of using real data and/or simple model-generated data. To demonstrate the value of such an approach, the behavior of the FastICA algorithm as a hyperspectral unmixing technique is evaluated using such data. This exploration leads to a number of useful insights such as: (1) the need to retain more dimensions than indicated by eigenvalue …

A Novel Visual Stimulation Paradigm: Exploiting Individual Primary Visual Cortex Geometry To Boost Steady State Visual Evoked Potentials (Ssvep), Marta Isabel Vanegas Arroyave Jan 2013

A Novel Visual Stimulation Paradigm: Exploiting Individual Primary Visual Cortex Geometry To Boost Steady State Visual Evoked Potentials (Ssvep), Marta Isabel Vanegas Arroyave

Dissertations and Theses

The steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP) is an electroencephalographic response to flickering stimuli generated in significant part by activity in primary visual cortex (V1). SSVEP signal-to-noise ratio is generally low for stimuli that are located in the visual periphery, at frequencies higher than 20 Hz, or at low contrast. Because of the typical "cruciform" geometry of V1, large stimuli tend to excite neighboring cortical regions of opposite orientation, likely resulting in electric field cancellation. In Study 1, we explored ways to exploit V1 geometry in order to boost scalp SSVEP amplitude via oscillatory summation, by manipulating flicker-phase offsets among angular …

A Novel Biomaterial Enables Chemotactic Study Of Motile Central Nervous System-Derived Tumor Cells, Tanya Singh

Dissertations and Theses

"The local cell microenvironment plays an important role in maintaining the dynamics of the extracellular matrix (ECM) and the cell-ECM relationship. ECM is a complex network of macromolecules with distinct mechanical and biochemical characteristics [1]. The multifaceted interactions that occur between cells and the ECM are crucial to the regulation of processes that maintain homeostasis. These mechanisms are often deregulated during cancer onset and progression, which cause the ECM to become highly disorganized, alter the cell-matrix interactions, and promote increased hypervascularity and metastasis as these components are indicative of cancer progression. Medulloblastoma (MB) is one of the most common, malignant …

Physical Unclonable Function Techniques Applied For Digital Hardware Protection, Anthony Barrera Jan 2013

Physical Unclonable Function Techniques Applied For Digital Hardware Protection, Anthony Barrera

Dissertations and Theses

"Privacy is an important property that is growing harder to keep as people develop new ways to steal information from users on their computers. Software alone cannot ensure privacy since an infected system is untrustworthy. This paper presents several challenges malware brings that can be solved by using an external processor. Techniques such as keystroke encryption and message authentication can be used to protect users from having their passwords and other private data stolen. To take advantage of the external hardware, a physical unclonable function can be used to generate private keys without the need for storing them in memory. …
