The Accessibility Of In-Prison Programming For Female Offenders And Their Gender Specific Needs, Kelli Reynolds
The Accessibility Of In-Prison Programming For Female Offenders And Their Gender Specific Needs, Kelli Reynolds
Honors Program Theses and Projects
With the rates of female incarcerations on the rise, it is important that we examine programs available to female offenders in prison, and programs available to female offenders as they exit prison and re-enter society. Programs developed specifically for these females to fit their needs are important in their rehabilitation progress and should help in keeping their recidivism rates low. I expect to find a disconnect between the needs of female offenders and the programs meant to serve and rehabilitate them. I also expect the review of literature to support that a majority of female offenders have histories of victimization …

Collaborative Partnerships For Advancing Nurse Practice And Patient Outcomes Through Ebp Fellowships, Lisa Hopp, Constance Sobon Sensor
Collaborative Partnerships For Advancing Nurse Practice And Patient Outcomes Through Ebp Fellowships, Lisa Hopp, Constance Sobon Sensor
Biennial Convention (CONV)
Session presented on: Sunday, November 17, 2013:
Over the last decade, nursing educators have worked to embed evidence-based practice in curricula. Yet gaps exist in the preparation of the workforce educated prior to the infusion of evidence-based practice in nursing education. Three Joanna Briggs Institute Collaborating centers have developed and implemented clinical fellowships to address the professional development needs of clinicians. The fellowships build fundamental evidence-based practice skills that include defining problems, asking questions, searching and appraising evidence, implementing the evidence, and evaluating and sustaining outcomes. Because of the collaborative nature of the centers, each fellowship shares common elements; however, …

An Evaluative Study Of The Returned Missionary Class At Brigham Young University, Arwen Tanis Wyatt
An Evaluative Study Of The Returned Missionary Class At Brigham Young University, Arwen Tanis Wyatt
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis reports on an evaluative study of the first 300-level Spanish class at Brigham Young University. The information gathered describes the history of the class and changes in curriculum and goals over the years. It also describes students who have taken the class: native Spanish speakers, heritage speakers, returned missionaries, students from lower-levels, students with a background in another Romance language, and presents information as to how well the class has met the needs of each group of students, as well as suggestions to better meet student needs. Results indicate that there is a general satisfaction with the first …
Molecular Hydrogen Regulated Star Formation In Cosmological Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics Simulations, Robert Thompson, Kentaro Nagamine, Jason Jaacks, Jun-Hwan Choi
Molecular Hydrogen Regulated Star Formation In Cosmological Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics Simulations, Robert Thompson, Kentaro Nagamine, Jason Jaacks, Jun-Hwan Choi
Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications
Some observations have shown that star formation (SF) correlates tightly with the presence of molecular hydrogen (H2); therefore, it is important to investigate its implication on galaxy formation in a cosmological context. In the present work, we implement a sub-grid model (hereafter H2-SF model) that tracks the H2 mass fraction within our cosmological smoothed particle hydrodynamics code GADGET-3 by using an equilibrium analytic model of Krumholz et al. This model allows us to regulate the SF in our simulation by the local abundance of H2 rather than the total cold gas density, which naturally …

Biennial Convention (CONV)
Special Session presented on: Sunday, November 17, 2013:
As the complex needs in providing care for older adults are continuing to increase we must have nurse leaders who can facilitate a positive future within a climate of constant change and reform. Effective interprofessional leadership in acute care settings, community health agencies, and long term care facilities is necessary to transform relevant practice and policy. The purpose of the Geriatric Nursing Leadership Academy (GNLA) is to prepare and position a cadre of nurses to lead practice advancements along the continuum of care and to become actively engaged in policy efforts to …

The International Nurse Faculty Partnership Initiative: The Regis College Haiti Project, Nancy W. Street
Biennial Convention (CONV)
Session presented on: Saturday, November 16, 2013: Regis College School of Nursing, Science and Health Professions has implemented an advanced education program for nursing faculty in Haiti in conjunction with national and international partners. The program addresses the acute nursing faculty shortage in Haiti and aims to improve the overall quality of nursing education and care in Haiti. Research confirms that nurses prepared at the baccalaureate or higher degree level have significantly better patient care outcomes (Aiken, L., JAMA September 26, 2003). This program is designed to enhance the education and credentials of Haitian nursing faculty who will lead in …

Time For A Paradigm Shift: The New Acrl Information Literacy Competency Standards For Higher Education, Marcus Banks
Time For A Paradigm Shift: The New Acrl Information Literacy Competency Standards For Higher Education, Marcus Banks
Communications in Information Literacy
Academic librarians should expand our understanding of what counts as an authoritative resource, and be unafraid to challenge long-established wisdom in this domain. Wikipedia is far from perfect, but neither is the Encyclopedia Britannica. Wikipedia is updated daily, while the Britannica is no longer printed. If we cling to the Britannica as a symbol of authoritativeness, we will become obsolete ourselves. One way to prevent this fate is to reframe our collective thinking. In 2014 the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) will issue a revised version of the Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education. The task force …

Building Healthy Work Environments In Academic Communities And Healthcare Settings: The Ultimate "Giving Back To Move Forward", David P. Hrabe
Biennial Convention (CONV)
Session presented on: Monday, November 18, 2013:
The health and wellness of the American people is in critical condition. Although cardiovascular disease is technically the leading cause of death in Americans, behaviors are truly the number one killer, due to smoking, overeating, lack of physical activity, non-adherence to medications and suicidal gestures. Overweight and obesity will soon surpass tobacco as the number one cause of preventable death and disease in the United States. With the rapid increase in the prevalence of overweight and obesity, the Centers for Disease Control predict that one out of three Americans will have diabetes by …

The Cope Healthy Lifestyles Teen Randomized Controlled Trial: Immediate And Six Month Effects On High School Adolescents' Bmi, Psychosocial Outcomes And Academic Performance, Bernadette Mazurek Melnyk
Biennial Convention (CONV)
Session presented on: Sunday, November 17, 2013:
The high prevalence of overweight/obesity and mental health disorders in adolescents call for the urgent testing of theory-based preventive interventions that can be easily incorporated into high school curriculums. Overweight teens have multiple adverse health outcomes, including depression, anxiety, poor social skills and academic problems. Despite the prevalence of these problems, there are few rigorously conducted experimental studies that have tested health promotion interventions to improve the healthy lifestyle behaviors, psychosocial outcomes and academic performance of at-risk adolescents. The purpose of this symposium is to describe the immediate and six month post-intervention findings …

Abstract Introduction: While learning the basics of patient safety, students can also learn about the contribution members of the various health professions can make to patient safety, which is why we stress the importance of interprofessional interactions in this Introduction to Patient Safety Symposium.
Methods: This 4-hour symposium is designed as an introduction to patient safety presented in a classroom setting, with students seated in groups made up of representatives of each health profession. The course revolves around a case scenario presentation of a hypothetical patient who has had his knee replaced and is the victim of a series of …

Biennial Convention (CONV)
Special Session presented on: Sunday, November 17, 2013:
One of the major forces shaping healthcare and nursing informatics today are big data needs in personalized healthcare, measuring quality and outcomes of care throughout the patient continuum, and the involvement of the consumer in healthcare and information technology. In addition there have been five revolutions in informatics that have impacted nursing IT: 1) the mainframe, 2) the minicomputer, 3) networked personal computers, 4) the world wide web (WWW), and 5) mobile networks. In this session the audience will be challenged with recommendations in nursing policy, education, and consumer involvement to improve …
