Hip-Hop, Medellín And Social Change, Veronica Henao Posada
Hip-Hop, Medellín And Social Change, Veronica Henao Posada
Master's Theses
This study explores the ways in which the Hip-hop movement is producing social change in Medellín, Colombia. Looking specifically at a Hip-hop school called Cuatro Elementos Skuela, which exists autonomously and with very little state support in the Medellín neighborhood of Aranjuez, I argue that young people are contributing to the reconstruction of the city’s social, cultural and economic fabric. I start by explaining the historical context of Medellín, describing the different sets of conflicts that unleashed high levels of violence and caused the fragmentation of the social, cultural and economic fabric. Moreover, I review the role of the …
Development Of A Resource Manager Framework For Adaptive Beamformer Selection, Jeremy P. Stringer
Development Of A Resource Manager Framework For Adaptive Beamformer Selection, Jeremy P. Stringer
Theses and Dissertations
Adaptive digital beamforming (DBF) algorithms are designed to mitigate the effects of interference and noise in the electromagnetic (EM) environment encountered by modern electronic support (ES) receivers. Traditionally, an ES receiver employs a single adaptive DBF algorithm that is part of the design of the receiver system. While the traditional form of receiver implementation is effective in many scenarios it has inherent limitations. This dissertation proposes a new ES receiver framework capable of overcoming the limitations of traditional ES receivers. The proposed receiver framework is capable of forming multiple, independent, simultaneous adaptive digital beams toward multiple signals of interest in …

Inflammatory Cytokine Gene Expression In Mesenteric Adipose Tissue During Acute Experimental Colitis, William Conan Mustain, Marlene E. Starr, Joseph Daniel Valentino, Donald A. Cohen, Daiki Okamura, Chi Wang, B. Mark Evers, Hiroshi Saito
Markey Cancer Center Faculty Publications
BACKGROUND: Production of inflammatory cytokines by mesenteric adipose tissue (MAT) has been implicated in the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Animal models of colitis have demonstrated inflammatory changes within MAT, but it is unclear if these changes occur in isolation or as part of a systemic adipose tissue response. It is also unknown what cell types are responsible for cytokine production within MAT. The present study was designed to determine whether cytokine production by MAT during experimental colitis is depot-specific, and also to identify the source of cytokine production within MAT.
METHODS: Experimental colitis was induced in 6-month-old C57BL/6 …
Mems Cantilever Sensor For Thz Photoacoustic Chemical Sensing And Spectroscopy, Nathan E. Glauvitz
Mems Cantilever Sensor For Thz Photoacoustic Chemical Sensing And Spectroscopy, Nathan E. Glauvitz
Theses and Dissertations
Sensitive Microelectromechanical System (MEMS) cantilever designs were modeled, fabricated, and tested to measure the photoacoustic (PA) response of gasses to terahertz (THz) radiation. Surface and bulk micromachining technologies were employed to create the extremely sensitive devices that could detect very small changes in pressure. Fabricated devices were then tested in a custom made THz PA vacuum test chamber where the cantilever deflections caused by the photoacoustic effect were measured with a laser interferometer and iris beam clipped methods. The sensitive cantilever designs achieved a normalized noise equivalent absorption coefficient of 2.83x10-10 cm-1 W Hz-1/2 using a 25 …
Electronic And Physical Characterization Of Hydrothermally Grown Single Crystal Tho2, Tony D. Kelly Ii
Electronic And Physical Characterization Of Hydrothermally Grown Single Crystal Tho2, Tony D. Kelly Ii
Theses and Dissertations
Actinide single crystals are important to the fabrication of next generation electronic devices that could possibly have radiation with the atmosphere and surroundings. Th02 single crystals were obtained previous to this work by hydrothermal synthesis. As these crystals were the first of their kind, the geometric and electric structure of the crystals needed to be extracted. The valence and conduction bands were studied in order to ascertain the band gap using ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy (UPS) and inverse photoemission spectroscopy (IPES). The unoccupied structure was further characterized using x-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) and relativistic, real-space Green's functions calculations. The …

Understanding Human Learning Using A Multiagent Based Unified Learning Model Simulation, Vlad T. Chiriacescu
Understanding Human Learning Using A Multiagent Based Unified Learning Model Simulation, Vlad T. Chiriacescu
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Within cognitive science, computational modeling based on cognitive architectures has been an important approach to addressing questions of human cognition and learning. Modeling issues such as limited expressivity in representing knowledge and lack of appropriate selection of model structure represent a challenge for existing architectures. Furthermore, latest research shows that the concepts of long-term memory, motivation and working memory are critical cognitive aspects but a unifying cognitive paradigm integrating those concepts hasn’t been previously achieved.
Derived from a synthesis of neuroscience, cognitive science, psychology, and education, the Unified Learning Model (ULM) provides this integration by merging a statistical learning mechanism …
Carry On, Yatao Li
Carry On, Yatao Li
Theses
Carry On is my thesis project for a MFA in Film and Animation at Rochester Institute of Technology. The entire process took more than two years from start to finish. In November 2011, I wrote the first draft of the script. In April 2013, we finished filming. I did not wrap up editing and the final stages of production until December 2013. I ran into many difficulties and faced many challenges during this special experience, yet I also received more help than I had ever imagined in getting me through these hard times. Truthfully, there would be no way for …

It makes kids love cleaning and provides an opportunity for parents to interact with kids while they are doing necessary housework.
Libya's Implosion And Its Impacts On Children, Lere Amusan
Libya's Implosion And Its Impacts On Children, Lere Amusan
Journal of International Women's Studies
The Arab Spring’s ripple effects on Libya led to the overthrow of Muammar Al-Qaddafi’s government of over four decades. The regime change in Libya was not a smooth adventure. It led to a civil war, which impacted negatively on Libyan children. The seeds of discord that this war sowed in the once considered stable state shall be the focus of this discussion through the employment of descriptive and analytical methods. The contention of this study is that every actor in the civil war disregarded various international treaties that protect children and indigenous peoples during the war. This paper argues that …

Nation, Gender, And Identity: Children In The Syrian Revolution 2011, Manal Al-Natour
Journal of International Women's Studies
This article examines the victimization and role of Syrian children in the Syrian Revolution 2011. I claim that through engaging in a competition to provide a definitive image of the nation, both the regime and the opposition victimize Syrian children. Nevertheless, the art projects undertaken by nonviolence activists have proven to help children heal and to cope with the predicaments brought on them by the crisis. The poetry, paintings, drawings, and songs produced by these children are the best means they have of representing their victimization and their role in the revolution, and communicating their perspectives on the Syrian nation …

Multi-State Models For Natural History Of Disease, Amy Laird, Rebecca A. Hubbard, Lurdes Y. T. Inoue
Multi-State Models For Natural History Of Disease, Amy Laird, Rebecca A. Hubbard, Lurdes Y. T. Inoue
UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series
Longitudinal studies are a useful tool for investigating the course of chronic diseases. Many chronic diseases can be characterized by a set of health states. We can improve our understanding of the natural history of the disease by modeling the sequence of visited health states and the duration in each state. However, in most applications, subjects are observed only intermittently. This observation scheme creates a major modeling challenge: the transition times are not known exactly, and in some cases the path through the health states is not known.
In this manuscript we review existing approaches for modeling multi-state longitudinal data. …

The extraction of detailed nuclear structure information from transfer reactions requires reliable, well-normalized data, as well as optical potentials and a theoretical framework demonstrated to work well in the relevant mass and beam energy ranges. It is rare that the theoretical ingredients can be tested well for exotic nuclei owing to the paucity of data. The halo nucleus 11Be has been examined through the 10Be(d,p) reaction in inverse kinematics at equivalent deuteron energies of 12,15,18, and 21.4 MeV. Elastic scattering of 10Be on protons was used to select optical potentials for the analysis of the transfer data. Additionally, data from …

Academic Staff’S Access And Use Of Technological Tools: A Challenge To Blended Learning Implementation In Tanzania’S Tertiary Institutions, Luka Mkonongwa
Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
This paper explores academic staff’s access to and ability to use technological tools in the course of implementing blended learning system in higher education. In a study, a survey questionnaire was used to collect data from 46 respondents. The results revealed that although academic staff had high self-efficacy towards learning and using technological tools, their access to and use of many technological tools were too limited. This affected their competence and confidence to use such technological tools to teach, and deterred the successful implementation of the blended learning approach. The study concluded that the success of blended learning will depend …
Challenges Of African Languages In Education: The Case Of Kiswahili In Tanzania, Benedictor Phanuel Lema
Challenges Of African Languages In Education: The Case Of Kiswahili In Tanzania, Benedictor Phanuel Lema
Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
Tanzania presents a perfect case of former colonies that have strived to redress colonial legacies. The Africanization policy adopted after independence and cemented in the 1967 Arusha Declaration was a deliberate move to replace foreign workforce and practices with African values. Education was one of the sectors that needed and, indeed, received a lot of transformations. This paper particularly discusses language practices in the education system in Tanzania in that context. While both theory and practice favour Kiswahili as a medium of instruction at all levels of education, policy seems to work to the contrary. The discussion revolves around the …
