Evaluating A Cognitive Behavioral Group For Social Anxiety In A Real World Setting, Samantha Brin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is characterized by fear of embarrassment. A common treatment for SAD is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), which can be delivered individually or in group settings. For the following research paper, a CBT group was administered to 4 individuals diagnosed with SAD in a real-world setting. The group lasted 6 weeks and utilized CBT interventions including psychoeducation, cognitive restructuring, and exposure simulations. Psychological Symptoms Scan (Psych-Scan), Social Phobia Inventory (SPIN), and Clinical Global Impression Scale (CGI) were utilized to measure the severity of clients’ anxiety and depression symptomology before and after treatment. The SPIN pre and posttest …

Social Network Analysis Using A Multi-Agent System: A School System Case, Lizhu Ma
Social Network Analysis Using A Multi-Agent System: A School System Case, Lizhu Ma
Computer Science Honors Theses
The quality of k-12 education has been a major concern in the nation for years. School systems, just like many other social networks, appear to have a hierarchical structure. Understanding this structure could be the key to better evaluate student performance and improve school quality. Many researches have been focusing on detecting hierarchical structure by using hierarchical clustering algorithms. Compared to existing methods, we design an interaction-based similarity measure to accomplish hierarchical clustering in order to detect hierarchical structures in social networks (e.g. school district networks). This method uses a Multi-agent System for it is based on agent interactions. With …

Experimental And Theoretical Studies Of The Pollination Ecology Of Gynodioecy, James David Stone
Experimental And Theoretical Studies Of The Pollination Ecology Of Gynodioecy, James David Stone
Biological Sciences
Gynodioecy, a breeding system with females and hermaphrodites, is the most common dimorphic system in plants and found in more species than all other polymorphic systems combined. One unresolved question in gynodioecy evolution is how dramatic sex ratio variation (0-100% female) is maintained among populations. To address this gap, I used complementary empirical and theoretical approaches to ellucidate pollinators' role in the evolution and maintenance of gynodioecy and variation in gynodioecious sex ratios. I conducted two field studies restricting the types of pollinators available to artificial populations of Silene vulgaris. The first study contrasted pollination by pollen collectors, strongly favoring …

Knowing Subjects: Cognitive Cultural Studies And Early Modern Spanish, Barbara Simerka
Purdue Studies in Romance Literatures
In Knowing Subjects, Barbara Simerka uses an emergent field of literary study-cognitive cultural studies-to delineate new ways of looking at early modern Spanish literature and to analyze cognition and social identity in Spain at the time. Simerka analyzes works by Cervantes and Gracían, as well as picaresque novels and comedias. Employing an interdisciplinary approach, she brings together several strands of cognitive theory and details the synergies among neurological, anthropological, and psychological discoveries that provide new insights into human cognition. Her analysis draws on Theory of Mind, the cognitive activity that enables humans to predict what others will do, feel, …

Cytokine Signaling In The Microenvironment May Aid In Tumor Development And Progression, Dr. Kim O'Neill
Cytokine Signaling In The Microenvironment May Aid In Tumor Development And Progression, Dr. Kim O'Neill
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Studies have indicated that in breast tumors a high number of tumor associated macrophages (TAM’s) is indicative of a poor prognosis. TAM’s in the breast tumor microenvironment generally have a compromised immune response and focus their energy toward tissue repair which leads to angiogenesis, tumor growth, and metastasis. These macrophages have been termed M2 macrophages. Conversely, studies also indicate that in the microenvironment of some colon cancers, M1 phenotypic macrophages are present and that a high number of TAM’s is associated with a good prognosis.

Fluorescent Cytotoxic Compounds Specific For The Cellular Polyamine Transport System, Otto Phanstiel
UCF Patents
Cyano-substituted anthracene containing polyamines were synthesized and shown to be efficient polyamine transporter ligands. Moreover, these agents (3 and 4) had improved fluorescence properties over previous anthryl-polyamine conjugates, which facilitated their intracellular trafficking by confocal microscopy. These cytotoxic fluorescent agents may find use as molecular probes which traffick into cells via the polyamine transport system and may also be viable anticancer drugs which are readily quantified in human tissues due to their excellent fluorescence properties: (excitation: ? 405 nm) and emission (420 nm) occurs in the visible light range. The ability to excite and emit in the visible range provides …

The Consider, Read, Elucidate hypotheses, Analyze and interpret data, Think of the next Experiment (CREATE) strategy for teaching and learning uses intensive analysis of primary literature to improve students’ critical-thinking and content integration abilities, as well as their self-rated science attitudes, understanding, and confidence. CREATE also supports maturation of undergraduates’ epistemological beliefs about science. This approach, originally tested with upper-level students, has been adapted in Introduction to Scientific Thinking, a new course for freshmen. Results fromthis course’s initial semesters indicate that freshmen in a one-semester introductory course that uses a narrowly focused set of readings to promote development of analytical …

Interaction Of Ruthenium Polypyridyl Complexes With Human Telometric Dna, Vienna Tran , '13
Senior Theses, Projects, and Awards
The goal of this thesis work was to explore the interactions between a series of ruthenium complexes and the human telometric DNA sequence. Specifically, this work investigated the ability of [Ru(bpy)₂L]²⁺ and [Ru(phen)₂L]²⁺ complexes to act as G-quadruplex (GQ) stabilizing ligands (bpy = bipyridine, phen = phenanthroline, L = a polypyridyl derivative of dipyridophenazine (dppz)). [Ru(bpy)₂(dppz)]²⁺ and [Ru(phen)₂(dppz)]²⁺ are known to bind to GQ DNA, though not selectively and also to display molecular light switch activity upon interaction with DNA. The ruthenium complexes were studied in this work with several UV-visible and fluorescent techniques to determine the ability of each …

Fertile Lands And Bodies: Connecting The Green Revolution, Pesticides, And Women’S Reproductive Health, Sarah M.K. Cycon
Pitzer Senior Theses
Environmentalists, social scientists, and economists have long critiqued the enduring impacts of the Green Revolution’s diffusion of agricultural technologies throughout the Global South. However, largely missing from the myriad analyses is the relationship between those technologies, namely pesticides, and health outcomes. This thesis explores the social and biological mechanisms through which excessive pesticide use culminated into adverse reproductive health outcomes for rural women in the Global South. Drawing together the history of the Green Revolution’s use of DDT, its social and economic impacts, and the biology of pesticide contamination in women’s bodies exposes how the Green Revolution situated women in …

Exercise Alters Glial Cell Line-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (Gdnf) Protein Content In The Spinal Cord, Monica Janine Mccullough
Dissertations
Neurotrophic factors may play a role in exercise-induced neuroprotective effects; however, it is not known if exercise mediates changes in glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) protein levels in the spinal cord. The aim of the studies described herein was to determine if exercise alters GDNF protein expression in the lumbar spinal cord of healthy and diseased animals. The lumbar spinal cord was analyzed from adult rats aged 6-, 12-, 18- and 24-months, and from transgenic amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) mice and wild-type mice aged 3 months. Animals had undergone either forced wheel running, voluntary wheel running or swimming for …

Functional Annotation And Comparative Analysis Of A Zygopteran Transcriptome, Alexander G. Shanku, Mark A. Mcpeek, Andrew D. Kern
Dartmouth Scholarship
In this paper we present a de novo assembly of the transcriptome of the damselfly (Enallagma hageni) through the use of 454 pyrosequencing. E. hageni is a member of the suborder Zygoptera, in the order Odonata, and Odonata organisms form the basal lineage of the winged insects (Pterygota). To date, sequence data used in phylogenetic analysis of Enallagma species have been derived from either mitochondrial DNA or ribosomal nuclear DNA. This Enallagma transcriptome contained 31,661 contigs that were assembled and translated into 14,813 individual open reading frames. Using these data, we constructed an extensive dataset of 634 orthologous nuclear protein-encoding …
Analysis Of Beetle Cuticular Hydrocarbons, Elizabeth A. Williams , '13
Analysis Of Beetle Cuticular Hydrocarbons, Elizabeth A. Williams , '13
Senior Theses, Projects, and Awards
The insect cuticle, commonly known as the exoskeleton, consists of two layers: a bottom layer called the procuticule and a thin outer waxy coating called the epicuticle. The epicuticle contains hydrocarbons that prevent desiccation and are used for chemical communication both inter- and intra- specifically. For some insects, these compounds are important sociochemicals involved in recognizing nestmates and predators as well as identifying the sex of other insects. The established procedure to extract cuticular hydrocarbons is lethal, directly introducing the insects to toxic solvents. The goal of this study is to develop a non-lethal procedure to extract the cuticular hydrocarbons …
Expulsion Of Leaving Groups From Zwitterionic Intermediates Generated Via Photochemical Electrocyclic Ring Closure Reactions And An Investigation On Tpe Oligomers, Tasnuva Shahrin
Dissertations (1934 -)
Photochemical cleavage reactions have been found widespread use in biological applications that require intracellular photochemical release of biologically active substrates such as peptides, proteins, neurotransmitters, or nucleotide phosphates. The research is to devise photoremovable protecting groups (cage compounds) that can be used to deprotect those biological substrates by irradiation. A number of photocleavage reactions have been developed in recent years which release chlorides, hydroxides, carboxylates, thiolates, and phenolates leaving groups for use in such applications. Nevertheless, photochemical elimination reactions that expel such leaving group anions remain quite uncommon. The cleavage of cage compounds via photolysis requires heterolysis of a bond …
Immobilized Viologen Polymer For Use In Direct Carbohydrate Fuel Cells, Yining Pan
Immobilized Viologen Polymer For Use In Direct Carbohydrate Fuel Cells, Yining Pan
Theses and Dissertations
Glucose and other carbohydrates are some of the most abundant renewable energy sources in the world. The oxidation of carbohydrates in a fuel cell allows their chemical energy to be converted directly into electrical energy. Viologen has been indentified and shows promising ability as an electron-transfer catalyst or mediator for carbohydrate oxidation in an alkaline carbohydrate fuel cell. Building on the previous results, the objective of this work was to develop an immobilization chemistry of viologen onto an electrode and to investigate the catalytic activity for carbohydrate oxidation in direct carbohydrate fuel cells. The immobilization was achieved by electropolymerizing a novel …

Bridging The Gap: Using The Theory Of Planned Behavior To Predict Hpv Vaccination Intentions In Men, Daniel Snipes
Bridging The Gap: Using The Theory Of Planned Behavior To Predict Hpv Vaccination Intentions In Men, Daniel Snipes
Theses and Dissertations
Genital human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI) in the US, with an estimated incidence rate of 6.2 million new cases each year. Men have higher instances of certain HPV related outcomes (e.g., head/neck cancers) when compared to women, so male vaccination with the HPV vaccine is also paramount to preventing cancer. The present study examined the theory of planned behavior (TPB) as a model for predicting HPV vaccination intentions among men. Results suggest the TPB was a well-fitting model to the data, but not all aspects of the TPB model were predictive of HPV vaccination …

Cantilever-Based Optical Interfacial Force Microscope In Liquid Using An Optical-Fiber Tip, Byung I. Kim, Luke Smith, Thanh Tran, Steven Rossland, Erik Parkinson
Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations
We developed a novel cantilever-based optical interfacial force microscope (COIFM) to study molecular interaction in liquid environments. The force sensor was created by attaching a chemically etched optical-fiber tip to the force sensor with UV epoxy, and characterized by imaging on a calibration grid. The performance of the COIFM was then demonstrated by measuring the force between two oxidized silicon surfaces in 1 mM KCl as a function of distance. The result was consistent with previously reported electrical double layer forces, suggesting that a COIFM using an optical-fiber tip is capable of measuring force in a liquid environment.

Preparation, Characterization And Spectroscopic Study Of New Tridentate Schiff Base And Its Cu(Ii), Ni(Ii) And Zn(Ii) Metal Complexes, Abeer Khalid Yaseen, Isam Hussain T Al-Karkhi
Baghdad Science Journal
A new tridentate ligand has been synthesized derived from phenyl(pyridin-3-yl)methanone. Three coordinated metal complexes were prepared by complexation of the new ligand with Cu(II), Ni(II) and Zn(II) metal salts. The new Schiff base “benzyl -2-[phenyl(pyridin-3-yl)methylidene]hydrazinecarbodithioate” and the new metal complexes were characterized using various physico-chemical and spectroscopic techniques. From the analysis results, the expected structure to the metal complexes are octahedral in geometry for Cu(II) complex, square planner for Ni(II) and tetrahedral for Zn(II) complex. The new compounds are expected to show strong bioactivity against bacteria and cancer cells.

The semi-aquatic weevil Bagous hydrillae was released during 1991-1996 at 19 sites in 4 states in attempts to control the aquatic weed hydrilla, Hydrilla verticillata. Fourteen of the sites were in Florida, 2 each in Texas and Georgia and one site in Alabama. Over 320,000 adult weevils were included in these releases. Despite the fact that a few adults were recovered as late as 4.5 yr post-release, presence of permanent, self-perpetuating populations was never confirmed. Then, during 2009 adult B. hydrillae were collected in southern Louisiana, at least 580 km from the nearest release site and 13 yr after attempts …

Biological Control Of Common Salvinia (Salvinia Minima) In Louisiana Using Cyrtobagous Salviniae (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), Katherine A. Parys, Seth J. Johnson
Faculty Publications
Common salvinia, Salvinia minima Baker, is an aquatic invasive fern that obstructs waterways and impacts water quality throughout the southeastern United States. In an effort to establish populations for classical biological control of this weed, the weevil, Cyrtobagous salviniae Calder and Sands, was released at multiple sites across Louisiana. Many of the release sites were lost due to a variety of ecological and anthropological disturbances. In 2008, C. salviniae was found to have successfully overwintered on S. minima in Gramercy, Louisiana. Attack by Cyrtobagous salviniae significantly increased the number of damaged terminal buds and decreased the fresh weight biomass of …
