Paul's Poetic License: Philippians 2:6-11 As A Hellenistic Hymn, Anna Groebe Jan 2013

Paul's Poetic License: Philippians 2:6-11 As A Hellenistic Hymn, Anna Groebe

Honors Program: Student Scholarship & Creative Works

In this paper, I use the scholarship surrounding Philippians 2:6-11 to identify it as a pre-Pauline hymn influenced by Greek culture. I use Dr. Arnold Levin’s essay “Paul’s Victory Song” as a springboard, investigating his arguments as well as other more well-known scholarship covering the passage. Dr. Levin argues that Philippians 2:6-11 is a Greek ode in the Aeolic style written in imitation of Pindar, with a clearly established meter. Although I disagree with Dr. Levin's methods and conclusion, I do not completely reject all of his argument. Philippians 2:6-11 does not have a clear meter as one might find …

A Model Of Faith-Learning Integration In Exemplary Teaching Faculty, Kathryn A. Westrate Jan 2013

A Model Of Faith-Learning Integration In Exemplary Teaching Faculty, Kathryn A. Westrate

Master of Arts in Higher Education (MAHE) Theses

The integration of faith and learning serves as a central tenet for Christian higher education. Though valued for its guiding principles of faithful scholarship, the ambiguous and philosophical nature of the concept leaves a gap of understanding of how faith-learning is actualized, let alone actualized excellently, in the classroom. In order to explore the essence of the concept, 11 academic teaching faculty members selected for their exemplary faith-learning work from a small faith-based liberal arts institution were interviewed. Representing a diverse field of disciplines, the interviews explored the faculty members’ excellence in faith-learning conceptualization and practice. Strong emergent themes resulted …

Book Review: The Surprising Election And Confirmation Of King David, Roger S. Nam Jan 2013

Book Review: The Surprising Election And Confirmation Of King David, Roger S. Nam

Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary

Excerpt: "In this revised Th.D. dissertation (Harvard Divinity School, 2006), Randall Short challenges the interpretation of the History of David's Rise (1 Sam. 16-2 Sam. 5; hereafter = HDR) as political apology in the style of the "Hittite Apology of Hattusili." Instead, Short argues that both the wider literary context and individual elements support HDR as a testimony to the surprising and wondrous character of YHWH in the unlikely selection of David as his chosen one."

Bible In Mission, Pauline Hoggarth, Fergus Macdonald, Knud Jorgenson, Bill Mitchell Jan 2013

Bible In Mission, Pauline Hoggarth, Fergus Macdonald, Knud Jorgenson, Bill Mitchell

Regnum Edinburgh Centenary Series

To the authors of Bible in Mission, the Bible is the book of life, and mission is life in the Word. This core reality cuts across the diversity of contexts and hermeneutical strategies represented in these essays. The authors are committed to the boundary-crossings that characterize contemporary mission – and each sees the Bible as foundational to the Missio Dei, to God’s work in the world.

Orthodox Perspectives On Mission, Petros Vassiliadis Jan 2013

Orthodox Perspectives On Mission, Petros Vassiliadis

Regnum Edinburgh Centenary Series

Orthodox Perspectives on Mission is both a humble tribute to some great Orthodox theologians, who in the past have provided substantial contribution to contemporary missiological and ecumenical discussions, and an Orthodox input to the upcoming 2013 Busan WCC General Assembly. There is a long history of similar contributions by the Orthodox before all the major ecumenical events. The collected volume is divided into two parts: Part I under the subtitle The Orthodox Heritage consists of a limited number of representative Orthodox missiological contributions of the past, whereas Part II includes all the papers presented in the Plenary of the recent …

The Perfect Priest: An Examination Of Leviticus 21:17-23, Jared Wilson Jan 2013

The Perfect Priest: An Examination Of Leviticus 21:17-23, Jared Wilson

Seminary Masters Theses

Leviticus 21:17-23 is a text that discriminates against priests who have one of the twelve blemishes listed, approaching the text with the intent to redeem the text for modern application. An exploration in the role of priests in the ancient Near East will show how the priests were human representations of the deity and many cultures and religions had physical restrictions for the priests similar to Lev 21:17-23. Examining the language of Lev 21:17-23 will show that the restrictions were not merely symbolic but intended to stop blemished priests from approaching the altar. However, they were not statements about the …

Power Relations In The Samaria Ostraca, Roger S. Nam Jan 2013

Power Relations In The Samaria Ostraca, Roger S. Nam

Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary

Whereas recent studies have correctly identified a clan-based social structure presumed in the place names of the Samaria Ostraca, an analysis of the power relations within these structures has not been sufficiently developed. Approaching the evidence from a consumption perspective of the commodities for yn yšn (‘aged wine’) and šmn r¬½ (‘washed oil’) suggests that the economic significance of these items is tied to complex social interactions. Specifically, both archaeological and ethnographic studies associate such prestige commodities with elite feasting and ceremonial displays. By gifting these items, the central power engaged in a form of ‘competitive feasting’ to secure political …

Book Review: The Yehud Stamp Impressions: A Corpus Of Inscribed Impressions From The Persian And Hellenistic Periods In Judah, Roger S. Nam

Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary

Excerpt: "In the world of archaeology, excavators often parade their discoveries of grand architectural structures in hopes of attracting favorable publicity, volunteers, and, ultimately funding to support continued fieldwork. But what happens when, alongside these dramatic discoveries, excavation produces more mundane findings such as impressions on jars, often containing merely three letters: Hebrew yod, he, and dalet? In The Yehud Stamp Impressions: A Corpus of lnscribed Impressions from the Persian and Hellenistic Periods in Judah, Oded Lipschits and David s. Vanderhooft attempt to highlight the seemingly mundane as an opportune window to the social world of …

"Our Father Isaac": Reading The Sahidic Testament Of Isaac In An Egyptian Monastic Context, John William Fadden Jan 2013

"Our Father Isaac": Reading The Sahidic Testament Of Isaac In An Egyptian Monastic Context, John William Fadden

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation argues that the textual community of fourth or fifth century monastic Egypt read Testament of Isaac as an ascetical regimen in order to transform themselves into children of Isaac. T. Isaac highlights three particular dimensions of Isaac's character from the remembered tradition of Isaac that would have resonated in the Egyptian monastic context of the textual community - Isaac as priestly authority, Isaac as sacrifice, and Isaac as blind ascetic - to create a model for the new self that the textual community aimed to achieve. Two important ascetic practices in T. Isaac that the textual community was …

Vindicating Josiah, William J. Hamblin Jan 2013

Vindicating Josiah, William J. Hamblin

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

Margaret Barker has written a number of fascinating books on ancient Israelite and Christian temple theology. One of her main arguments is that the temple reforms of Josiah corrupted the pristine original Israelite temple theology. Josiah’s reforms were therefore, in some sense, an apostasy. According to Barker, early Christianity is based on the pristine, original pre- Josiah form of temple theology. This paper argues that Josiah’s reforms were a necessary correction to contemporary corruption of the Israelite temple rituals and theologies, and that the type of temple apostasy Barker describes is more likely associated with the Hasmoneans.

Theological Foundations For An Ethics Of Cosmocentric Transfiguration: Navigating The Eco-Theological Poles Of Conservation, Transfiguration, Anthropocentrism, And Cosmocentrism With Regard To The Relationship Between Humans And Individual Nonhuman Animals, Ryan Patrick Mclaughlin Jan 2013

Theological Foundations For An Ethics Of Cosmocentric Transfiguration: Navigating The Eco-Theological Poles Of Conservation, Transfiguration, Anthropocentrism, And Cosmocentrism With Regard To The Relationship Between Humans And Individual Nonhuman Animals, Ryan Patrick Mclaughlin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the past forty years, there has been an unprecedented explosion of theological writings regarding the place of the nonhuman creation in ethics. The purpose of this dissertation is to propose a taxonomy of four paradigms of eco-theological thought that will categorize these writings and facilitate the identification, situation, and constructive development of the paradigm of cosmocentric transfiguration. This taxonomy takes shape within the tensions of three theological foundations: cosmology, anthropology, and eschatology. These tensions establish two categorical distinctions between, on the one hand, conservation and transfiguration, and, on the other, anthropocentrism and cosmocentrism. The variations within these poles yield …

The Semantics Of Hebrew Na' In The Pentateuch And Former Prophets., Stephen Kline Jan 2013

The Semantics Of Hebrew Na' In The Pentateuch And Former Prophets., Stephen Kline

CTS Master of Theology (ThM) Theses

Beginning with a discussion of face-based linguistic politeness, this thesis investigates the etymology of the particle נָא as well as its meaning in the Pentateuch and Former Prophets. Though always associated with requests, the function of נָא varies according to its syntactical usage. With the particles הִנָּה and נָא ,אִם indicates that a request is about to be made; the interjections נָא and אַל־נָא are found too rarely to draw certain conclusions, but even in the few attested occurrences, a request follows. With the third-person jussive, נָא indicates that the hearer is being asked to do something, either to engage …

Jeremiah And Feelings: A Non-Identity Crisis., Brenda Kronemeijer-Heyink Jan 2013

Jeremiah And Feelings: A Non-Identity Crisis., Brenda Kronemeijer-Heyink

CTS Master of Theology (ThM) Theses

As indicated by Jeremiah’s title, “the weeping prophet,” the book of Jeremiah is full of a wide range of feelings. The agent of these feelings is not only Jeremiah, but also his community (the people of Judah) and the LORD. These feelings expressed in the book can be seen as part of the prophetic message. In fact, Jeremiah’s feelings are not only his own but are also representative of his community and the LORD. This representational nature of Jeremiah’s feelings is hinted at through the ambiguity of the emotional agent, is shown in the paralleled feelings and incitements thereof for …
