Geographic Variation In Chin Shape Challenges The Universal Facial Attractiveness Hypothesis, Zaneta M. Thayer, Seth D. Dobson Apr 2013

Geographic Variation In Chin Shape Challenges The Universal Facial Attractiveness Hypothesis, Zaneta M. Thayer, Seth D. Dobson

Dartmouth Scholarship

The universal facial attractiveness (UFA) hypothesis proposes that some facial features are universally preferred because they are reliable signals of mate quality. The primary evidence for this hypothesis comes from cross-cultural studies of perceived attractiveness. However, these studies do not directly address patterns of morphological variation at the population level. An unanswered question is therefore: Are universally preferred facial phenotypes geographically invariant, as the UFA hypothesis implies? The purpose of our study is to evaluate this often overlooked aspect of the UFA hypothesis by examining patterns of geographic variation in chin shape. We collected symphyseal outlines from 180 recent human …

Cave Taphonomy, Amberly Rounds

The Review: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Research

In lieu of an abstract, below is the first paragraph of the paper.

Savrda and Lewis Gastaldo define taphonomy as the paleontological subdiscipline which is concerned with the process responsible for any organism becoming part of the fossil record, and how these processes influence information in the fossil record (Gastaldo 1996, 1). Lee Lyman goes on to state that even more so it is the science dealing with the laws of burial or embedding (Lyman l). In this paper taphonomy will be discussed along with its use in cave settings mainly during the Pleistocene era. Mary C. Steiner makes it …

Indigenous Perspectives On Contemporary Native Art, Indigenous Aesthetics And Representation, John Paul Rangel Apr 2013

Indigenous Perspectives On Contemporary Native Art, Indigenous Aesthetics And Representation, John Paul Rangel

Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs

In this dissertation I examine and posit Indigenous perspectives on contemporary Native art, Indigenous aesthetics and issues of representation. Contemporary Native art at this moment is best described as an expression of values—personal or communal or cultural—with an attention to material conditions and current issues. I employ Indigenous methodologies and Tribal Critical Race theory as a critical framework to intervene in the dominant discourse on Native art. This research focuses on the narratives and perspectives of eight artists who represent a cross-section of the current state of Native arts production in North America drawing from the local Native arts community …

Cultural And Religious Practices, The Lack Of Educational Resources, And Their Role In The Perpetuation Of Female Genital Mutilation, Claudelle Clarke Apr 2013

Cultural And Religious Practices, The Lack Of Educational Resources, And Their Role In The Perpetuation Of Female Genital Mutilation, Claudelle Clarke

The Review: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Research

Some form of female genital mutilation or circumcision takes place in most countries in Africa. This project aims to show that male dominance, culture, tradition, religion and ignorance of basic human rights play a pivotal role in the perpetuation of female genital mutilation or circumcision. I will endeavor to bring to the forefront the problems government officials face when they try to abolish the practice; I will also discuss the complications and challenges the understaffed, overworked, ill-prepared medical faculties face when dealing with women who have undergone this procedure of female genital mutilation or circumcision.

Copper’S Corollaries: Trade And Labour Migration In The Copperbelt (1910-1940), Enid Guene

Zambia Social Science Journal

The geopolitical importance of the mining industry in Zambia and Katanga, and the rural-urban migration patterns that it brought about, has been the subject of many studies. And yet, the extent to which these industries were interdependent is often downplayed or overlooked. Looking more closely at the history of the Zambian and Katangese Copperbelts, one can see that, despite their separateness, there was interplay between them. During the British South Africa Company rule of Rhodesia (1899-1924), Northern Rhodesia was developed as an important labour and food reserve for the Katangese mines. Following the onset of the Great Depression in the …

Wealth, Success, And Personhood: Trajectories Of Labour Migration From Mwinilunga District, 1930s-1970s, Iva Peša Apr 2013

Wealth, Success, And Personhood: Trajectories Of Labour Migration From Mwinilunga District, 1930s-1970s, Iva Peša

Zambia Social Science Journal

What were the causes and consequences of labour migration from Mwinilunga District between the 1930s and 1970s? Within Zambian historiography, economic and political aspects of labour migration have received much attention. Labour migration has been analysed within dichotomies of rural-urban, development-underdevelopment or tradition-modernity. Instead, this article proposes to bridge such dichotomies and to foreground the socio-cultural dispositions behind labour migration. If mobility is viewed as a social, rather than a geographical practice, connections and long-term continuities come to light. Through the case of Mwinilunga District the causes, motives and effects of labour migration will be examined. Why did individuals decide …

Necessity Of Classroom Community For The Academic Success Of Students In An Alternative Education Program, Courtney Gates Apr 2013

Necessity Of Classroom Community For The Academic Success Of Students In An Alternative Education Program, Courtney Gates

Education Masters

Principals and teachers recommend students for alternative placements based on failure or perceived future issues in a general education setting in the hopes that the student will be more academically successful. Removing students from a setting in which they are failing seems like a logical choice, but do the students perceive it as a good thing? Studies have shown that students in alternative education programs tend to be more academically successful for two reasons. Students feel that teachers and staff in an alternative setting are more invested in their education, which gives students motivation to do well. Secondly, alternative programs …
