The Importance Of Choice: Political Intermediaries And Democratization In Egypt After The Arab Spring, Matthew Lacouture
The Importance Of Choice: Political Intermediaries And Democratization In Egypt After The Arab Spring, Matthew Lacouture
Student Research Symposium
Is post-revolution Egypt demonstrably different from the ancien régime? Where and between whom is political competition currently taking place? In the aggregative conception, democracy requires the presence of substantive political choice, differentiated through 'robust' competition between intermediaries – most often political parties – that serve to effectively aggregate and articulate political preferences. This produces an observable and genuine link between public preferences and government policies. In Egypt, the lack of a coheren and viable alternative to the Muslim Brotherhood-affiliated Freedom and Justice Party (FJP) – itself an amalgamation of conflicting and particularistic interests – has deprived the people of any …
Death By Injustice: Uganda’S Anti-Homosexuality Laws, Christian Fundamentalism, And The Politics Of Global Power, Dylan Harris
Death By Injustice: Uganda’S Anti-Homosexuality Laws, Christian Fundamentalism, And The Politics Of Global Power, Dylan Harris
The Catalyst
Across Africa, the persecution of gay people is gaining momentum. Gay people have been denied health care, detained, tortured, and killed. In 2009, the Ugandan parliament drafted The Anti-Homosexuality Bill, which has accrued significant attention, mostly negative, from the international community. However, it seems that any attention, positive or negative, only serves to fan the flames from which the laws were created. Anti-homosexuality laws, both formal and informal, have existed for decades within Uganda, but the current laws being drafted are by far the most formal and comprehensive. This paper will examine the political and religious context in which …

Touring The Ancient West: Archaeological Interpretation In Nuwuvi (Southern Paiute) Homelands, Cerinda Survant
Student Research Symposium
Reconciling stewardship and recreational access to public lands is particularly problematic at sites of archaeological and spiritual significance. This poster details the development of a methodology to assess the interpretation of vulnerable archaeological resources on public lands. Using case studies of five existing visitors centers/interpretive areas in the American West, this research uses qualitative and quantitative methods to evaluate different strategies for interpreting landscape, environment, and culture to the visiting public. Case studies include Bandolier National Monument, Mesa Verde National Park, Petroglyph National Monument, Ute Mountain Tribal Park, and Grimes Point Archaeological Site. Areas of investigation include visitorship and visitor …
Magical Realism As A Means Of Expressing Cultural Disjunction In Alejo Carpentier's 'El Reino De Este Mundo', Ryan Saul Cunningham
Magical Realism As A Means Of Expressing Cultural Disjunction In Alejo Carpentier's 'El Reino De Este Mundo', Ryan Saul Cunningham
Student Research Symposium
Cuban writer Alejo Carpentier's 1949 novel El reino de este mundo is considered to be a key work in the development of the magical realist narrative idiom. The narrative includes instances of the fantastic -- including ghosts and animal metamorphoses -- that the novel's Afro-Caribbean characters accept as factual. In keeping with his suggestions that "the entire history of America [is] a chronicle of the marvelous real," Carpentier supposes that these elements elucidate an "authentic" New World mode of perception. However, the novel's narrative structure belies the author's objective. The concurrent presentation of both non-Western/magical and Western/disenchanted cultural paradigms prevents …
Strategies To Facilitate Voice/Hand Coordination For Jazz Improvisation By The Jazz Singer/Pianist, Kathleen L. Hollingsworth
Strategies To Facilitate Voice/Hand Coordination For Jazz Improvisation By The Jazz Singer/Pianist, Kathleen L. Hollingsworth
Open Access Dissertations
There appear to be few, if any books or resources that provide practical technical approaches for the jazz singer/pianist. Also, non-instrumentalist singers rarely display the fluid facility that jazz instrumentalists or singers who play instruments do. Similarly, pianists may have a tendency to play continually without pause or breath. To address these performance challenges, the author has created exercises intended to increase the fluidity, musicianship, facility and improvisational skills of the jazz singer/pianist. The exercises will vary in range to include singing and playing single melodic lines together, singing and playing in harmony between the voice and piano, and playing …

The Role Of Family Organization In Family Health History Communication About Cancer, Vivian M. Rodríguez
The Role Of Family Organization In Family Health History Communication About Cancer, Vivian M. Rodríguez
Theses and Dissertations
Family health history (FHH) has been recognized as an important tool in cancer prevention and health promotion. To date, literature on FHH discussions about cancer have largely focused on patient-physician communication or the dissemination of cancer-specific genetic tests results within the family. Fewer studies have sought to identify family factors that may promote FHH discussions, yet this type of information could be used to identify families needing support in having these conversations. Thus, the present study examined relations between family organization (cohesion and flexibility), communication openness, and FHH communication about cancer within a diverse group of women recruited from an …
Locating Linguistic Power Relationships: A Glimpse Into Transnational Feminist Dialogue Through Comparison Of Major Feminist Publications In The Us And China (2000-2012), Shuli Han
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Does the use of English as a universal language in the transnational feminist dialogue empower women globally? In what way does English shape the flow of conversation by circulating some feminist knowledge while neglecting others? Through conducting content analysis research on major feminist publications in both China and the US, this thesis probes the limitations of English as “Lingua Franca” through comparing authors, topics, and the use of references in the Collections of Women’s Studies (CWS), the most prestigious feminist journal in China, with Signs, one of the core feminist journals in the US. Through the comparison …

Globalization is fundamentally an economic process that influences all levels of everyday life transforming ways of production, thought, creation and experience. As such, globalization offers a compelling analytical polyphony that has been approached theoretically from historical, geographical, sociological and anthropological points of view. Although the notion of a globalized world is not a new concept, to study globalization from the perspective of a city offers an interesting set of perspectives. Nonetheless, there are very few studies, and none in relation to Latin America, that address the issue of the globalized city taking the theater scene as the starting point of …
Responding To The Affordable Care Act: Health Insurance Exchange Policy Diffusion, Margaret Worman
Responding To The Affordable Care Act: Health Insurance Exchange Policy Diffusion, Margaret Worman
Political Science Honors Projects
Following the passage of the Affordable Care Act, the government of each U.S. state either adopted a state run health insurance exchange or defaulted to a federally run exchange. This study uses event history analysis to examine this decision making process and the broader diffusion of health insurance exchange policy among the states. The results of this analysis indicate that states with a government controlled by the Democratic Party, a moralistic political culture, and a large uninsured population were more likely to adopt a state run exchange at an earlier date.

Eating Spaces And Places: Examining The Latin@ Barrio, Chinatown, And Black Urban Space As Sites Of Collective And Social Imagination, Kathlynn E. Hinkfuss
American Studies Honors Projects
I focus on three specific neighborhood tropes that are commonly understood and accepted in the American social imagination: the Latin@ Barrio, Chinatown, and Black Urban Space. I examine how these three neighborhood tropes show up in and play out on physical examples of these spaces. I identify three currently existing neighborhoods in the Upper Midwest: the South Side of Milwaukee, Chinatown in Chicago, and North Minneapolis. To more specifically interrogate the connection between the abstract and concrete, I argue that specific sites of analysis in each neighborhood are symbolically and physically consumed: the Mexican restaurant “La Perla” in Milwaukee, the …

The Utility Of Darkness: Figments Of A State Called The Democratic Republic Of The Congo, Aimee M. Mackie
The Utility Of Darkness: Figments Of A State Called The Democratic Republic Of The Congo, Aimee M. Mackie
International Studies Honors Projects
Since the Heart of Darkness brought the cruelty of King Leopold’s rule of the Congo to the world’s attention, it has been viewed internationally as the locus ofinhumanity. My thesis examines how this perception has excused the role of neocolonial actors in furthering destabilization. After independence, the United States and Belgium, with the assistance of Mobutu Sese-Seko, exploited the nominally sovereign Congo. The weakening of the Congolese state has continued in recent years through a lack of accountability for international interventions brought about by bureaucratic secrecy, popular ignorance, and human rights rhetoric.

Dating Human Cultural Capacity Using Phylogenetic Principles, J. Lind, P. Lindenfors, S. Ghirlanda, K. Lidén, M. Enquist
Publications and Research
Humans have genetically based unique abilities making complex culture possible; an assemblage of traits which we term “cultural capacity”. The age of this capacity has for long been subject to controversy. We apply phylogenetic principles to date this capacity, integrating evidence from archaeology, genetics, paleoanthropology, and linguistics. We show that cultural capacity is older than the first split in the modern human lineage, and at least 170,000 years old, based on data on hyoid bone morphology, FOXP2 alleles, agreement between genetic and language trees, fire use, burials, and the early appearance of tools comparable to those of modern hunter-gatherers. We …
A Social Network Analysis Of Hamadryas Baboons, Christian Treat
A Social Network Analysis Of Hamadryas Baboons, Christian Treat
Honors Theses
The study of animal sociality investigates the immediate and long-term consequences that a social structure has on its group members. Typically, social behavior is observed from interactions between two individuals at the dyadic level. However, a new framework for studying social behavior has emerged that allows the researcher to assess social complexity at multiple scales. Social Network Analysis has been recently applied in the field of ethology, and this novel tool enables an approach of focusing on social behavior in context of the global network rather than limited to dyadic interactions. This new technique was applied to a group of …
Hissār, Sohail Abdullah
Hissār, Sohail Abdullah
Theses and Dissertations
Hissaar is a noun and a verb, it is the periphery and the extremities, and the walls and the fortress. And it is to encircle, to wrap and to contain. This paper is an inexhaustive account of thoughts, experiences and lessons learned, of varying forms that influence my aesthetic sensibilities, my art-value system, and my art- ethical concerns. They provide for my art the impetus for its perpetual (and perhaps circular) journey. It is about finding connections between the fraying ends of free floating ideas. The following fragments explores how words make ideas, ideas make images, images make memory; memory …
Does Child Sponsorship Have A Positive Impact On The Quality Of Life And Social Behavior Of Sponsored Children? Evidence From Indonesia, Mario Carrillo
Does Child Sponsorship Have A Positive Impact On The Quality Of Life And Social Behavior Of Sponsored Children? Evidence From Indonesia, Mario Carrillo
Master's Theses
Relaxing an internal constraint of an individual at early stages of life is an approach that complements traditional policy interventions aimed to alleviate poverty. The Compassion International child sponsorship program focuses their work on the emotional, social, and spiritual development of sponsored children. This study investigates the impacts of child sponsorship on the quality of life and social behavior of sponsored children using age-eligibility as an instrument for sponsorship, a time preference experiment and a trust game. The study looks specifically at self-esteem, optimism, social trust, educational outcomes, patience and reciprocity of 286 sponsored children and 234 non-sponsored children between …

What are the challenges faced in treating Hypertension in the Worcester African Immigrant Community?
This study investigates the relationship between the understanding of high blood pressure, and the ability and willingness to modify behavior among African patients at Akwaaba, a free health clinic in Worcester, Massachusetts. In this research, our team specifically explores how the understanding of lifestyle risk factors of hypertension, such as diet, exercise, and levels of stress, influence the willingness and ability to modify behavior among African born patients at Akwaaba. What become clear was that language barriers, cultural differences, and approach to health care within the …

Immigration And Farm Labor In The U.S., Philip Martin, Douglas B. Jackson-Smith
Immigration And Farm Labor In The U.S., Philip Martin, Douglas B. Jackson-Smith
Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications
Hired workers comprise 33 percent of people employed on farms but do an estimated 60 percent of the work performed on U.S. farms. Most hired farm workers were born abroad, usually in Mexico, and most are believed not to be authorized to work in the U.S. Changes in Mexico-US migration flows and more restrictive immigration laws and policies have increased the vulnerability of U.S. agriculture to labor supply shocks, which could increase costs and threaten the ability of some farmers to harvest laborintensive crops. Congress is considering major changes in immigration policies. Farm employers want access to a reliable supply …
