Transpersonal Approaches To Autoethnographic Research And Writing, Diana Raab May 2013

Transpersonal Approaches To Autoethnographic Research And Writing, Diana Raab

The Qualitative Report

My life as nonfiction writer has led to my interest in doing an autoethnographical study and this paper will discuss how autoethnography can be performed using transpersonal psychology as a model. Autoethnography is a personal narrative akin to biography and memoir, and has become a more prevalent research method because of its accessibility an d the ease with which the reader can connect with the researcher ’ s and participant's lived experiences and/or epiphanies. The best narratives consist of embodied, vulnerable, and evocative writing, which help to explore, transform, and heal through various life journeys. This self - awareness and …

The Era Of Open-Ended Dual Life, Hirosuke Hyodo May 2013

The Era Of Open-Ended Dual Life, Hirosuke Hyodo

Publications and Research

Although missing in mainstream studies of American immigration in the post-1965 Act era, the volume of native Japanese living in the U.S. today (called the shin-issei) is three times that of the prewar Japanese-American community on the U.S. mainland. Their curious absence from the mainstream studies results from the traditionally entrenched frame, ‘immigrants’, that does not unfit their migrant patterns. This paper explores the shin-issei, portraying their characters in three parts: (1) akogare (‘longing or desire’) for the West grown in Japan in the late nineteenth century, (2) a statistical sketch of the shin-issei over the last several decades, and …

The Linguistics Of Sentiment Analysis, Laurel Hart May 2013

The Linguistics Of Sentiment Analysis, Laurel Hart

University Honors Theses

Computational linguistics is a field that was founded by linguists, but more recently is the domain of more computer scientists than linguists. Use of data driven and machine learning methods for computational linguistics applications is now more common than handwritten linguistic rules. In order for a linguist to enter the field, it is essential that he or she be familiar with methods and techniques from computer science. The purpose of this paper is twofold. The first is to serve as a linguist's introduction to concepts from outside of linguistics that are used in computational linguistics. The second purpose is to …

African Immigrant Women In The United States: Perceptions On Female Circumcision And Policies That Outlaw The Practice, Lucinda M. Deason, Rosa M. Githiora May 2013

African Immigrant Women In The United States: Perceptions On Female Circumcision And Policies That Outlaw The Practice, Lucinda M. Deason, Rosa M. Githiora

African Social Science Review

Harmful traditional practice, such as female circumcision (FC) performed on children causes minimal to severe health problems. FC violates the human and medical informed consent rights of female children. African immigrants from communities that practice FC are required to comply with policies that outlaw FC. The purpose of this study is twofold: 1) to gain an understanding of African immigrant women‟s views on FC and policies that outlaw the practice, and 2) to provide new insights and identify effective strategies for improving compliance with anti-FC laws. A phenomenological approach was deployed to gain an understanding of African immigrant women‟s perceptions …

Letting The Apes Run The Zoo: Using Tort Law To Provide Animals With A Legal Voice, Tania Rice May 2013

Letting The Apes Run The Zoo: Using Tort Law To Provide Animals With A Legal Voice, Tania Rice

Pepperdine Law Review

Science is increasingly showing us that animals have many cognitive similarities with humans. In addition to calls for changes in our animal protection statutes, members of the legal community have begun debating over whether animals, or a certain category of animals, should be granted legal rights. This approach has the potential for drastic societal ramifications. David S. Favre has proposed a tort action for animals as a compromise to the animal rights debate. This Comment explores the different approaches to seeking improved conditions for animals, and proposes an adjusted tort cause of action in response to criticisms of Favre's tort.

Constitutive And Regulating Modes Of Learning In Creative Design Education, Elena Bartomeu Magaña, Octavi Rofes Baron May 2013

Constitutive And Regulating Modes Of Learning In Creative Design Education, Elena Bartomeu Magaña, Octavi Rofes Baron

Learn X Design Conference Series

The main aim of this research to analyse the learning process in order to recognize the characteristics currently associated with creating and/or creative students profiles. This paper focuses not much on the psychology of individuals as on the learning process as an intersubjective network of social relations. The theoretical framework considers holistic judgement and arithmetic assessment as evaluation modes and the relevance of fiction within the learning process. With these referents we have developed a polarized parametric system as a framework for mapping learning practices and teaching strategies. On one side we consider the actions related to the constitution of …

Seroprevalence Of Epstein-Barr Virus Infection In U.S. Children Ages 6-19, 2003-2010, Jennifer Beam Dowd, Tia Palermo, Jennifer Brite, Thomas W. Mcdade, Allison Aiello

Publications and Research

Background Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a common herpesvirus linked to infectious mononucleosis and multiple cancers. There are no national estimates of EBV seroprevalence in the United States. Our objective was to estimate the overall prevalence and sociodemographic predictors of EBV among U.S. children and adolescents aged 6–19. Methods We calculated prevalence estimates and prevalence ratios for EBV seroprevalence using data from the 2003–2010 U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) for children aged 6–19 (n = 8417). Poisson regression was used to calculate multivariable-adjusted prevalence ratios across subgroup categories (sex, race/ethnicity, parental education, household income, household size, foreign-born, BMI, …

Refugee Children’S Adaptation To American Early Childhood Classrooms: A Narrative Inquiry, Megan A. Prior, Tricia Niesz May 2013

Refugee Children’S Adaptation To American Early Childhood Classrooms: A Narrative Inquiry, Megan A. Prior, Tricia Niesz

The Qualitative Report

Researchers have suggested that a paucity of research exists on refugee youth in early child hood education settings. Arguing that children’s stories provide educators a valuable resource for understanding the meaning children make of initial cross - cultural experiences, this article presents a narrative inquiry into the stories and artwork of three early childhood students, along with the narratives of their families, all Karen refugees from Myanmar. Examining what these stories reveal about the children’s initial experiences in an American early childhood setting, we share their stories of adaptation, their experiences of cultural dissonance, and their illustrations of change over …

From Affordable Care Act To "Obamacare": Political Party And The Framing Of Health Care In The 2012 Presidential Election, Anna Sours

Science and Social Sciences

In the world of politics, language can be the difference between success and failure. Through language, we are able to communicate and understand one another, and it is important to critically analyze the language used by public figures in order to gain insight into their goals and attitudes. This study examines the language used by Barack Obama and Mitt Romney during the 2012 presidential election. Specifically, the study explores the ways in which Romney and Obama utilized frames, or the mental structures that shape the way they see the world. A sample of each candidate’s rhetoric and language was analyzed, …

Salva La Iglesia: A Congregation's Fight For Community, Maria E. Schwarz

Science and Social Sciences

The purpose of this study is to examine community response to crisis and the impact intercultural interactions have on the outcome of ethnic and religious group conflict. This research uses a case study focusing on the San Martín Catholic Mission in Oregon and the ways this particular community responded to the crisis of the Catholic diocese threatening to sell their property in 2010. I gathered data from a year of ethnographic fieldwork, participant observations in the setting, and in-depth interviews with six individuals involved in the church and related community groups. I then analyzed the data using the lens of …

An Exploratory Ethnography Of The Gendered Communicative Behaviors Of Bouncers, Nathan M. Swords

The Hilltop Review

This research study focuses on combining my interests in interpersonal communication and organizational communication, and work experience as club security. Specifically, the research explores the communicative behaviors of club security (i.e., bouncers) in two different situational contexts, specifically those based on population and demographic composition. The communicative behaviors of bouncers were explored in two specific contexts in the Midwest: (1) a college town with mid-size city population, and (2) an urban center of one of the largest cities in the U.S. Utilizing an ethnographic methodological approach – as a participant-observer– as the primary data source, a commitment of 32 hours …
