Death Penalty Drugs: A Prescription That's Getting Harder To Fill, Corinna Barrett Lain Jul 2013

Death Penalty Drugs: A Prescription That's Getting Harder To Fill, Corinna Barrett Lain

Law Faculty Publications

Six states have abolished the death penalty in the past six years—Illinois, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Maryland, and New Mexico. We haven’t seen mass moves like that since the 1960s. What gives?

Part of the answer is that those states weren’t executing anyway. More people in those states were dying on death row waiting to be executed than were actually being executed, and the death penalty is breathtakingly expensive to maintain (a point to which I’ll return in a moment).

So why weren’t the states executing? We tend to hear about innocence claims, trench warfare litigation, official moratoriums, study …

Environmental Protection Agency Consultations With Indian Tribes: An Intercultural Struggle Over Process Of 'Consent', Denise Scannell Guida

Publications and Research

On November 6, 2000, President Bill Clinton signed his final executive order on

Consultation and Coordination with Tribal Governments. It was his last attempt to establish meaningful consultation processes with American Indians in the development of federal environmental policies. Based on ongoing environmental issues between the two cultures and the rising concern for environmental justice, the United States government wanted to identify the necessary improvements in communication and coordination among tribal and federal environmental programs, specifically regarding issues of information exchange, and creating partnerships among stakeholders. An analysis of the executive order, and a case study of the U.S. …

Comparative Approaches To Studying Strategy: Towards An Evolutionary Account Of Primate Decision Making, Sarah F. Brosnan, Michael J. Beran, Audrey E. Parrish, Sara A. Price, Bart J. Wilson Jul 2013

Comparative Approaches To Studying Strategy: Towards An Evolutionary Account Of Primate Decision Making, Sarah F. Brosnan, Michael J. Beran, Audrey E. Parrish, Sara A. Price, Bart J. Wilson

Economics Faculty Articles and Research

How do primates, humans included, deal with novel problems that arise in interactions with other group members? Despite much research regarding how animals and humans solve social problems, few studies have utilized comparable procedures, outcomes, or measures across different species. Thus, it is difficult to piece together the evolution of decision making, including the roots from which human economic decision making emerged. Recently, a comparative body of decision making research has emerged, relying largely on the methodology of experimental economics in order to address these questions in a cross-species fashion. Experimental economics is an ideal method of inquiry for this …

Herpes Simplex Virus 1 Glycoprotein M And The Membrane-Associated Protein Ul11 Are Required For Virus-Induced Cell Fusion And Efficient Virus Entry, In Joong Kim, Vladimir N. Chouljenko, Jason D. Walker, Konstantin G. Kousoulas Jul 2013

Herpes Simplex Virus 1 Glycoprotein M And The Membrane-Associated Protein Ul11 Are Required For Virus-Induced Cell Fusion And Efficient Virus Entry, In Joong Kim, Vladimir N. Chouljenko, Jason D. Walker, Konstantin G. Kousoulas

Faculty Publications

Herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) facilitates virus entry into cells and cell-to-cell spread by mediating fusion of the viral envelope with cellular membranes and fusion of adjacent cellular membranes. Although virus strains isolated from herpetic lesions cause limited cell fusion in cell culture, clinical herpetic lesions typically contain large syncytia, underscoring the importance of cellto-cell fusion in virus spread in infected tissues. Certain mutations in glycoprotein B (gB), gK, UL20, and other viral genes drastically enhance virus-induced cell fusion in vitro and in vivo. Recent work has suggested that gB is the sole fusogenic glycoprotein, regulated by interactions with the …

Characterization Of Oil Palm Empty Fruit Fiber Reinforced Pva / Ramin Solouki Bonab, Solouki Bonab Ramin

Student Works (2010-2019)

Fiber reinforced polymers (FRP) are kinds of composites commonly used for increasing the strength, elasticity and tribological properties of material. The composition of polymers and fibers make it as a unique property and provide solution to the ever growing concerns regarding cost, environment and structural stability of beams and columns. Development of polymer made life easier and comfortable and introduce new life to human but recycling polymer is today’s issue. It is true that polymers are recyclable but process of recycling polymers require greater processing such as heat treating, thermal depolymerization and monomer recycling to be recycle due to high …

The importance of the human microbiome in health may be the single most valuable development in our conception of the microbial world since Pasteur's germ theory of the 1860s. Its implications for our understanding of health and pathogenesis are profound. Coupled with the revolution in diagnostics that we are now witnessing - a revolution that changes medicine from a science of symptoms to a science of causes - we cannot continue to develop antibiotics as we have for the past 80 years. Instead, we need to usher in a new conception of the role of antibiotics in treatment: away from …

Scientific Communication Before And After Networked Science, John Carey Jul 2013

Scientific Communication Before And After Networked Science, John Carey

Publications and Research

Recent decades have seen extensive changes in how researchers in the sciences work. Online platforms enabled by Web 2.0 technologies (collectively known as “open” or “networked” science) have created multiple new channels for informal communications, revolutionizing the ways in which scientists collaborate and share results. Meanwhile, digitization and open access publishing have brought fundamental change to modes of publication and distribution for scientific journals. Yet the primary vehicle for the formal publication of results, the scientific article, has been much slower to alter in format. This paper will examine the functions that peer-reviewed journals have served within the scientific community …

Birds And Birding In Wyoming’S Bighorn Mountains Region, Jacqueline L. Canterbury, Paul A, Johnsgard, Helen F. Downing

Zea E-Books Collection

The Bighorn Mountains consist of a relatively well-isolated north-south mountain range in north-central Wyoming that had their origins during the early Cenozoic era, 50-65 million years ago. The present-day Bighorn range is more than 100 miles in length and has a maximum elevation of 13,167 feet (Cloud Peak), only slightly less than the highest peak in Wyoming (Gannett Peak, at 13,804 feet). The mountains are flanked to the west by the Bighorn River basin, and to the east by the Powder River basin, both of which support only semi-desert vegetation dominated by sagebrush. Elevations of the Powder River basin near …

Duck Productivity In Restored Species-Rich Native And Species-Poor Non-Native Plantings, Ryan Haffele, Michael E. Eichholz, Cami S. Dixon

Publications

Conservation efforts to increase duck production have led the United States Fish and Wildlife Service to restore grasslands with multi-species (3-5) mixtures of introduced cool season vegetation often termed dense nesting cover (DNC). The effectiveness of DNC to increase duck production has been variable, and maintenance of the cover type is expensive. In an effort to decrease the financial and ecological costs (increased carbon emissions from plowing and reseeding) of maintaining DNC and provide a long-term, resilient cover that will support a diversity of grassland fauna, restoration of multi-species (16-32) plantings of native plants has been explored. We investigated the …

Inflammatory Cytokines Alter Normal Lipid Mobilization In Adipocytes, Nicholas Steven Card Jul 2013

Inflammatory Cytokines Alter Normal Lipid Mobilization In Adipocytes, Nicholas Steven Card

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Obesity is an increasing trend within the United States and the importance of addressing both causation and effects of obesity are becoming more important. It has been shown that environment, genetics, and social behavior factors can lead to an increased risk of obesity. Obesity has also been associated with several negative health concerns including increased risk for heart disease, cancer, poor nutrition, and diabetes, among others. Beyond identifying individual factors that may lead to obesity, and be associated with it, it is important to take into account complex obese biological systems which may have multiple factors compounding any health problems. …

Initial Epidemic Area Is Strongly Associated With The Yearly Extent Of Soybean Rust Spread In North America, Christopher C. Mundt, La Rae D. Wallace, Tom W. Allen, Clayton A. Hollier, Robert C. Kemerait, Edward J. Sikora Jul 2013

Initial Epidemic Area Is Strongly Associated With The Yearly Extent Of Soybean Rust Spread In North America, Christopher C. Mundt, La Rae D. Wallace, Tom W. Allen, Clayton A. Hollier, Robert C. Kemerait, Edward J. Sikora

Faculty Publications

Hosts of soybean rust (Phakopsora pachyrhizi) are sensitive to low temperatures, limiting this obligate parasite in the United States to overwintering sites in a restricted area along the Gulf Coast. This temperature sensitivity of soybean rust hosts allowed us to study spatial spread of epidemic invasions over similar territory for seven sequential years, 2005-2011. The epidemic front expanded slowly from early April through July, with the majority of expansion occurring from August through November. There was a 7.4-fold range of final epidemic extent (0.4-3.0 million km2) from the year of smallest final disease extent (2011) to that of the largest …

Strategies For Anti-Fibrotic Therapies., Joel Rosenbloom, Fabian A. Mendoza, Md, Sergio A. Jimenez Jul 2013

Strategies For Anti-Fibrotic Therapies., Joel Rosenbloom, Fabian A. Mendoza, Md, Sergio A. Jimenez

Jefferson Institute of Molecular Medicine Papers and Presentations

The fibrotic diseases encompass a wide spectrum of entities including such multisystemic diseases as systemic sclerosis, nephrogenic systemic fibrosis and sclerodermatous graft versus host disease, as well as organ-specific disorders such as pulmonary, liver, and kidney fibrosis. Collectively, given the wide variety of affected organs, the chronic nature of the fibrotic processes, and the large number of individuals suffering their devastating effects, these diseases pose one of the most serious health problems in current medicine and a serious economic burden to society. Despite these considerations there is currently no accepted effective treatment. However, remarkable progress has been achieved in the …

Wetlands Regulation In An Era Of Climate Change: Can Section 404 Meet The Challenge?, Alyson C. Flournoy, Allison Fischman

UF Law Faculty Publications

This Article raises the question of how we should assess the potential threat to wetlands posed by the impacts of a changing climate and considers the role that section 404 of the Clean Water Act can play both in assessing and responding to that threat. Our inquiry is two-fold. First, should we be concerned about climate impacts on wetlands? And if so, how can section 404 help us to assess and respond to this threat?

Part I surveys the scientific literature on the projected impacts of climate change of particular relevance to wetlands and the impacts anticipated for particular types …

Renewable Energy Through Agency Action, Amy L. Stein Jul 2013

Renewable Energy Through Agency Action, Amy L. Stein

UF Law Faculty Publications

Despite the many societal benefits associated with renewable energy, it is used to generate only about 5 percent of our nation's electricity needs. The bulk of governmental efforts to rectify this situation have disproportionately impacted private actors. This Article argues that the federal government should expand its efforts to more fully capture the gains that can be achieved by targeting both private and public actors, particularly federal agencies. Federal agencies have enormous purchasing power that can be channeled toward using electricity and fuels derived from renewable energy. Federal agencies are some of the largest consumers of electricity. Federal agencies manage …

Spectacular Unhappiness: Social Life, Narcissistic Commodification, And Facebook, Delores Phillips, Kevin Moberly

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

In her 2010 work, The Promise of Happiness, Sara Ahmed contends that contemporary society is in the midst of a "happiness turn" (3) that is characterized by a resurgence of interest in the "economics and science of happiness" (3) in popular media, as well as the rapid growth of the so-called "happiness industry" (3) and the establishment of several university departments of Happiness Studies. Recognizing that the concept of happiness has historically been used to justify the oppression of women and minorities, she argues that our contemporary turn to happiness represents a manifestation of a larger socio-political …

On The Politics Of Societal Constitutionalism, Emilios Christodoulidis Jul 2013

On The Politics Of Societal Constitutionalism, Emilios Christodoulidis

Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies

This paper is an internal critique of the theory of societal constitutionalism as developed by Gunther Teubner, with a specific emphasis on the constitutional and the political dimensions of the theory. As critique it focuses on the arguably unacknowledged dangers of co-option: the danger that constitutionalization, as an ongoing process, undercuts what we typically associate with the constitutional, which is its framing function; that this problem is accentuated when it comes to the transnational; and that its reflexivity runs the danger of market capture, in which case it remains only nominally political. The danger of market capture for societal constitutionalism …

Study Of Ligand Binding Reactions Of Bis-Aminemetalloporphyrins, Frank Wang Jul 2013

Study Of Ligand Binding Reactions Of Bis-Aminemetalloporphyrins, Frank Wang

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

Porphyrins are molecular complexes that are critical for the proper functioning of many important biological macromolecules such as hemoglobin and myoglobin. The goal of this research is to monitor the transformations and differences that occur with the addition of metals and ligands to a model porphyrin compound called tetraphenylporphyrin (TPP). During this work, a series of metalloporphyrin complexes were prepared, with changes to both metal centers and ligand attachments at those centers. Specifically, iron, zinc, cobalt and manganese metalloporphyrins have been synthesized and identities verified via electronic absorption spectroscopy. Ligand binding studies have begun with the addition of piperidine and …
