A Survey Of Dance Flies (Diptera: Empididae) In Mongolia, Paul Frandsen, Dr. C. Riley Nelson
A Survey Of Dance Flies (Diptera: Empididae) In Mongolia, Paul Frandsen, Dr. C. Riley Nelson
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Dance flies from the super family Empidoidea (Diptera:Empididae, Hybotidae) were collected from western Mongolia in June and July 2009. Historical published records of Empididae in Mongolia along with unpublished, more recently collected records from the Selenge River Basin were compared with the samples from western Mongolia. Thirteen genera were identified from western Mongolia in 2009, with eight of these new for the country. Although 23 genera are now know for Empedoidea in Mongolia, only five were found in both the Selenge River and the 2009 collection from western Mongolia, suggesting distinct differences in faunal composition between the two areas.
Margaret Cavendish’S Introductory Epistles As Essayistic Guidelines, Lina Maria Ferreira Cabeza-Vanegas, Dr. Brandi Siegfried
Margaret Cavendish’S Introductory Epistles As Essayistic Guidelines, Lina Maria Ferreira Cabeza-Vanegas, Dr. Brandi Siegfried
Journal of Undergraduate Research
When I began my project I intended to conjoin Theodor W. Adorno’s and Györg Lukács’ definitions of the essa—as stated in “The Essay as Form” and “Soul and Form,” respectively—with Susan M. Fitzmaurice’s definition of the epistolary genre to determine if definite essayistic elements found in other forms—specifically Margaret Cavendish’s work—of writing transformed, expanded, redefined, or negated the current conception of the, so called, fourth genre. I assumed that this isolation of “pure essayistic elements” would contribute toward stricter genre boundaries built on a more objective theoretical mesh work through which other pieces of writing could be more easily classified …
Calcium Remodeling Through Different Signaling Pathways In Heart Failure: Arrhythmogenesis Studies Of Pyk2, Dystrophin, And Β-Adrenergic Receptor Signaling, Di Lang
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
Heart failure is a common clinical syndrome that ensues when the heart is no longer able to generate sufficient cardiac output to meet the demands of the body. It is one of the leading causes of death worldwide but with limited and non-ideal therapies at the moment. One reason behind this may be the complexity of significant alterations in multiple signaling pathways and concomitant structural and functional remodeling, especially Ca handling. Ca is critical in both the electrical and mechanical properties of cardiac myoctyes, and much is known about ionic currents and the normal excitation-contraction coupling process. In heart failure, …

Spit For Science: The Relationship Between Deviant High School Behavior And College Substance Use, Preetha Palasuberniam
UROP Posters
This study examined the relationship between deviant high school behavior, as defined by symptoms of conduct disorder, and frequency of alcohol and cigarette use in the past 30 days in college freshman at VCU. Deviant high school behaviors included skipping school, running away, stealing, starting a fire, destroying property, hurting animals or people, using weapons, fighting, and lying. The sample included first year freshmen at VCU who participated in the Spit for Science study. The software SPSS was used to calculate the significance of the correlations between deviant high school behavior and frequency of alcohol and cigarette use. A sum …

Istribution Patterns Of The Morphology, Species, And Sex In The Stingray Species Complex Of Himantura Uarnak, Himantura Undulata, And Himantura Leoparda In Indonesia, Irma Shita Arlyza1, Dedy Duryadi Solihin, Dedi Soedharma
Makara Journal of Science
The assessment of the morphology and stingray species distribution of the Himantura uarnak species complex covers eight sampling sites in western and eastern Indonesia as many as 113 individuals. The observation of the reticulate pattern was accomplished by directly checking the dorsal side of the stingrays, and growth observations also carried out. The distribution patterns were analyzed using the principal component analysis (PCA), while the growth patterns were evaluated using correlation analyses. The reticulation patterns of the H. uarnak species complex were highly variable, and the distribution patterns based on the morphological parameters, species, and sex produced four groups. The …

Background: Developmental programs are implemented by regulatory interactions between Transcription Factors (TFs) and their target genes, which remain poorly understood. While recent studies have focused on regulatory cascades of TFs that govern early development, little is known about how the ultimate effectors of cell differentiation are selected and controlled. We addressed this question during late Drosophila embryogenesis, when the finely tuned expression of the TF Ovo/Shavenbaby (Svb) triggers the morphological differentiation of epidermal trichomes.
Results: We defined a sizeable set of genes downstream of Svb and used in vivo assays to delineate 14 enhancers driving their specific expression in trichome …
Cultural Preservation And Modern Development In The Amazon, Eric W. Linton
Cultural Preservation And Modern Development In The Amazon, Eric W. Linton
Journal of Undergraduate Research
In the summer of 2009 indigenous groups in the Peruvian Amazon headed a major grassroots movement against the national government in an effort to protect their lands and lifestyles. The protests brought due international attention to issues of human rights and land ownership that had previously been a local matter. Several months previous to the movement a colleague and I ventured to the Putumayo region of the Peruvian Amazon in an effort to understand the issues being faced by the people of those regions. Specifically, we aimed to understand the importance of self determined rights as a means to preserve …

Adaptive Control For Distributed Multi-Agent Coordination, Jie Luo
Adaptive Control For Distributed Multi-Agent Coordination, Jie Luo
Doctoral Dissertations
Distributed multi-agent coordination has drawn increased attention in past decades. Distributed coordination refers to the behavior that a group of agents reaches a certain group coordination with local sensor information and limited inter-agent communications. Depending on the specific task of the distributed multi-agent coordination, a group of agents may move together in a collective manner, maintain a certain formation configuration, or reach an agreement on certain quantity of interest. These coordination problems are called flocking, formation control and consensus, respectively. A majority of existing research on distributed multi-agent coordination mainly considers agents governed by linear dynamics, while few papers address …

Abstract
Resource partitioning within the ecological niche space in which there is a high level of overlap between species can alleviate the tendency toward competitive exclusion. When competitive ability is asymmetrical due to predation or other ecological factors, it may be more effective for the less competitive species to lessen direct competition by contracting their use of local resources. Species occurring in mixed assemblages may come into direct contact with each other throughout their respective breeding seasons. Where competition for breeding habitat and acoustic space exists, the level of interference is expected to vary widely, depending upon the ecological and …

Cardiac Myocyte Diversity And A Fibroblast Network In The Junctional Region Of The Zebrafish Heart Revealed By Transmission And Serial Block-Face Scanning Electron Microscopy, Pascal J. Lafontant
Cardiac Myocyte Diversity And A Fibroblast Network In The Junctional Region Of The Zebrafish Heart Revealed By Transmission And Serial Block-Face Scanning Electron Microscopy, Pascal J. Lafontant
Biology Faculty publications
The zebrafish has emerged as an important model of heart development and regeneration. While the structural characteristics of the developing and adult zebrafish ventricle have been previously studied, little attention has been paid to the nature of the interface between the compact and spongy myocardium. Here we describe how these two distinct layers are structurally and functionally integrated. We demonstrate by transmission electron microscopy that this interface is complex and composed primarily of a junctional region occupied by collagen, as well as a population of fibroblasts that form a highly complex network. We also describe a continuum of uniquely flattened …
Synthesis And Evaluation Of Unnatural Hpaa, Norcoclaurine, And Tyramine Analogues, Sean Crowe
Synthesis And Evaluation Of Unnatural Hpaa, Norcoclaurine, And Tyramine Analogues, Sean Crowe
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
There are several approaches to obtaining unnatural analogues of natural products. One of these approaches is precursor-directed biosynthesis (PDB), which is the process of using natural biosynthetic machinery to transform unnatural analogues of precursor compounds to produce an unnatural analogue of a target natural product. Berberine and galanthamine are chosen as model systems for the evaluation of PDB for the production of aromatic alkaloids in plants. Several approaches to the synthesis of unnatural 4 hydroxyphenylacetaldehyde (HPAA), norcoclaurine, and tyramine analogues are explored. 3-chloro-, 3-bromo-, and 3-iodoHPAA are all synthesized in good yields via and oxidative decarboxylation of tyrosine. These analogues …

Investigating The Metabolic And Pathophysiological Ramifications Of Elevated Dietary Cholesterol And Macronutrient Manipulation In Guinea Pigs (Cavia Porcellus) With Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (Nafld), Ryan C. Deogburn
Doctoral Dissertations
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a clinicopathological entity that includes a spectrum of histological and biochemical anomalies. NAFLD begins with excessive lipid accumulation within hepatocytes (hepatic steatosis) and can transition to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), characterized by hepatic inflammation and injury that can render the liver vulnerable to bridging fibrosis, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma. Dietary cholesterol has been proposed as a potential mediator of the transition from steatosis to NASH. Guinea pigs are similar to humans in terms of hepatic cholesterol metabolism and were implemented in three studies to explore its contribution to NAFLD. In study one male guinea pigs …
Probabilistic And Dynamical Models Of Belief Update: Effects Of Experimentally Induced Implicit Bias, Stephanie Petrusz
Probabilistic And Dynamical Models Of Belief Update: Effects Of Experimentally Induced Implicit Bias, Stephanie Petrusz
Doctoral Dissertations
Organisms undertake actions on the basis of perceptions. Perceptions serve as the basis for what an agent takes to be the case; that is, for the agent’s beliefs. However, the idea of belief is freighted with notions of fallibility and subjectivity, since belief is often considered insofar as it is distinct from knowledge. Here, an attempt is made to link belief more closely with perception and action. This linkage is shown by considering the role belief plays in determining behavior, which is distinct from the role belief plays in language-based philosophical accounts of content and intention. These two notions …

Positron Emission Tomography For Pre-Clinical Sub-Volume Dose Escalation, Christopher Bass
Theses and Dissertations
Purpose: This dissertation focuses on establishment of pre-clinical methods facilitating the use of PET imaging for selective sub-volume dose escalation. Specifically the problems addressed are 1.) The difficulties associated with comparing multiple PET images, 2.) The need for further validation of novel PET tracers before their implementation in dose escalation schema and 3.) The lack of concrete pre-clinical data supporting the use of PET images for guidance of selective sub-volume dose escalations. Methods and materials: In order to compare multiple PET images the confounding effects of mispositioning and anatomical change between imaging sessions needed to be alleviated. To mitigate the …

The use of human and veterinary pharmaceuticals is increasing. Over the past decade, there has been a proliferation of research into potential environmental impacts of pharmaceuticals in the environment. A Royal Society-supported seminar brought together experts from diverse scientific fields to discuss the risks posed by pharmaceuticals to wildlife. Recent analytical advances have revealed that pharmaceuticals are entering habitats via water, sewage, manure and animal carcases, and dispersing through food chains. Pharmaceuticals are designed to alter physiology at low doses and so can be particularly potent contaminants. The near extinction of Asian vultures following exposure to diclofenac is the key …
