Interactive Interpretive Ballet, Amara Chekwa
Interactive Interpretive Ballet, Amara Chekwa
Theses
My thesis exposes users to interpretive ballet, using many aspects of computer graphics design, including 3D animation, interaction and graphical user interface design. The interactive work consists of dragging and dropping pre-rendered animated ballet moves to create a sequenced dance performance. The target audience is young girls, ages 7-13, who are interested in interpretive dance and/or ballet. As ballet consists of precise movement, my animation focuses more on interpretive dance movements that imply ballet, rather than mimic the actual precision of ballet moves. The model used for this project was constructed on a grant from the National Center for Women …

Real Time Monitoring Of Surface Chemical Events By Streaming Potentials In Microfluidic Channels, Kenji Nokura
Real Time Monitoring Of Surface Chemical Events By Streaming Potentials In Microfluidic Channels, Kenji Nokura
Theses and Dissertations
Zeta potential is one of the tools to measure the surface charge of materials, and Alvarez et al. have developed a microchannel device to measure zeta potentials in real time for label-free sensing using immobilized receptors on microchannel surfaces. However, the challenge has been the charge interference of surface modifiers on analyte detection. Therefore, it was necessary to find the best strategy to regenerate minimal surface charge after modifying the channel with polymer films that would anchor the affinity groups for the analyte. It was demonstrated that adsorption of positively and negatively charged analytes were monitored via real time zeta …
Thermodynamics Of A Rotating Detonation Engine, Craig A. Nordeen
Thermodynamics Of A Rotating Detonation Engine, Craig A. Nordeen
Doctoral Dissertations
A practical thermodynamic cycle model of a rotating detonation engine (RDE) is developed for the purpose of predicting performance and understanding flow field behavior. The cycle model is based on a heuristic analysis of a RDE numerical simulation. The model is compared to the simulation and to laboratory experiment with good results.
The RDE constrains a detonation wave to rotate inside a cylindrical annulus, has no moving parts and requires a single ignition sequence. Thrust is produced continuously and at high frequency. The simplicity of the RDE offers the possibility of a practical detonation engine with efficiencies that exceed conventional …

Actor-Network Theory, Tourism Organizations And The Development Of Sustainable Community Livelihoods, Mohamed Ahmed
Plymouth Business School Theses
Research on existing actor-networks has focused traditionally on outcomes, achievements and success at the expense of a detailed consideration of their formation and ability to function. In recognition of this lacuna, this study examined the formation and functioning of tourism-related actor-networks involved in environmental protection and the management of tourism in the coastal city of Hurghada, Egypt. More specifically, it applied the actor-network theory (ANT). In particular, the study applied its four moments of translation – problematization, interessement, enrolment and mobilization – and used Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) to analyse the influencing factors, whether positively or negatively, and the degree …

Division of Cardiology Faculty Papers
PURPOSE: Sevoflurane increases reactive oxygen species (ROS), which mediate cardioprotection against myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury. Emerging evidence suggests that autophagy is involved in cardioprotection. We examined whether reactive oxygen species mediate sevoflurane preconditioning through autophagy.
METHODS: Isolated guinea pigs hearts were subjected to 30 min ischemia followed by 120 min reperfusion (control). Anesthetic preconditioning was elicited with 2 % sevoflurane for 10 min before ischemia (SEVO). The ROS-scavenger, N-(2-mercaptopropionyl) glycine (MPG, 1 mmol/l), was administered starting 30 min before ischemia to sevoflurane-treated (SEVO + MPG) or non-sevoflurane-treated (MPG) hearts. Infarct size was determined by triphenyltetrazolium chloride stain. Tissue samples were obtained …

Evaluation Of Insulin-Like Growth Factor Receptor 1 Inhibition As A Treatment For Prostate Cancer: Preclinical Efficacy And Resistance, Cale Fahrenholtz
Evaluation Of Insulin-Like Growth Factor Receptor 1 Inhibition As A Treatment For Prostate Cancer: Preclinical Efficacy And Resistance, Cale Fahrenholtz
Open Access Dissertations
Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed non-cutaneous malignancy in U.S. men. While tumors initially respond to androgen-deprivation therapy, the standard care for advanced or metastatic disease, tumors eventually recur as castration-resistant prostate cancer. Upregulation of the insulin-like growth factor signaling axis drives growth and progression of prostate cancer by promoting proliferation, survival, and angiogenesis. Ganitumab (formerly AMG 479) is a fully human antibody that inhibits binding of IGF-1 and IGF-2 to IGF-1R. Ganitumab decreased IGF-1 induced phosphorylation of the downstream effector AKT and reduced proliferation of multiple androgen-dependent and castration-resistant human prostate cancer cell lines in vitro albeit to …

Head Coaching Gender Equality At The Division Iii Level, James Troutman
Head Coaching Gender Equality At The Division Iii Level, James Troutman
Sport Management Undergraduate
Throughout history gender discrimination has created barriers that have prevented women from achieving their desired career goals no matter what the work setting is. One way that steps were made towards the elimination of gender discrimination was the enactment of Title IX in 1972. Pervious research has examined barriers that women head coaches coaching men’s teams have had to overcome in order to acquire their position. The coaches who were used in that research either coached NCAA Division I men’s teams or all three divisions combined. The barriers these women experienced were both externally and internally barriers. The external barriers …

The Ciliary Protein Cystin Forms A Regulatory Complex With Necdin To Modulate Myc Expression, Maoqing Wu, Chaozhe Yang, Binli Tao, Su Bu, Lisa Guay-Woodford
Pediatrics Faculty Publications
Cystin is a novel cilia-associated protein that is disrupted in the cpk mouse, a well-characterized mouse model of autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease (ARPKD). Interestingly, overexpression of the Myc gene is evident in animal models of ARPKD and is thought to contribute to the renal cystic phenotype. Using a yeast two-hybrid approach, the growth suppressor protein necdin, known to modulate Myc expression, was found as an interacting partner of cystin. Deletion mapping demonstrated that the C-terminus of cystin and both termini of necdin are required for their mutual interaction. Speculating that these two proteins may function to regulate gene expression, …

Robinson Point, Belize: An Important Foraging Ground For Endangered Sea Turtles In The Western Caribbean Sea, Linda Searle
HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations
Anecdotal reports, flipper tag returns, satellite migration paths, and above-water and net surveys have identified an important foraging area for sea turtles in the Robinson Point area, 12 kilometers southwest of Belize City. Visual observations confirmed that sea turtles were actively foraging at Robinson Point. Sixteen 30 minute visual observations from stationary and drifting boats made 132 sea turtle sightings from October 2007 through January 2008, with a maximum of 40 sightings made in one survey. In-water capture methodology tested the traditional turtle net, which captured 14 turtles in 63 sets for a success rate of only 22%. There were …

Porites corals are foundation species on Pacific reefs but a confused taxonomy hinders understanding of their ecosystem function and responses to climate change. Here, we show that what has been considered a single species in the eastern tropical Pacific, Porites lobata, includes a morphologically similar yet ecologically distinct species, Porites evermanni. While P. lobata reproduces mainly sexually, P. evermanni dominates in areas where triggerfish prey on bioeroding mussels living within the coral skeleton, thereby generating asexual coral fragments. These fragments proliferate in marginal habitat not colonized by P. lobata. The two Porites species also show a differential bleaching response despite …

Our understanding of how anthropogenic habitat change shapes species interactions is in its infancy. This is in large part because analytical approaches such as network theory have only recently been applied to characterize complex community dynamics. Network models are a powerful tool for quantifying how ecological interactions are affected by habitat modification because they provide metrics that quantify community structure and function. Here, we examine how large-scale habitat alteration has affected ecological interactions among mixed-species flocking birds in Amazonian rainforest. These flocks provide a model system for investigating how habitat heterogeneity influences non-trophic interactions and the subsequent social structure of …

The Effect Of Varying Frequencies Of Mechanical Vibration On The Rate Of Orthodontic Tooth Movement In Mice, Thomas G. Dobie
The Effect Of Varying Frequencies Of Mechanical Vibration On The Rate Of Orthodontic Tooth Movement In Mice, Thomas G. Dobie
Master's Theses
Objective: The aim of this study is to utilize the Orthodontic Tooth Movement (OTM) model in a mouse in order to study the mechanical vibrational effects in bone. Specifically, we wish to test various frequencies of vibration under an orthodontic force to determine whether or not an increase in OTM is seen. We also intend to further investigate the role of osteoclasts in OTM and how they interplay with increasing tooth movement.
Materials and Methods: Fifty-eight male CD1 mice were randomly placed into 1 of 8 groups. Three of these groups were part of the experimental subset which all received …

Life In Groups: The Roles Of Oxytocin In Mammalian Sociality, Allison M.J. Anacker, Annaliese K. Beery
Psychology: Faculty Publications
In recent decades, scientific understanding of the many roles of oxytocin (OT) in social behavior has advanced tremendously. The focus of this research has been on maternal attachments and reproductive pair-bonds, and much less is known about the substrates of sociality outside of reproductive contexts. It is now apparent that OT influences many aspects of social behavior including recognition, trust, empathy, and other components of the behavioral repertoire of social species. This review provides a comparative perspective on the contributions of OT to life in mammalian social groups. We provide background on the functions of OT in maternal attachments and …
Use Of Irf-3 And/Or Irf-7 Knockout Mice To Study Viral Pathogenesis: Lessons From A Murine Retrovirus-Induced Aids Model, Megan A. O'Connor, William R. Green
Use Of Irf-3 And/Or Irf-7 Knockout Mice To Study Viral Pathogenesis: Lessons From A Murine Retrovirus-Induced Aids Model, Megan A. O'Connor, William R. Green
Dartmouth Scholarship
Interferon regulatory factor (IRF) regulation of the type I interferon response has not been extensively explored in murine retroviral infections. IRF-3(-/-) and select IRF-3/7(-/-) mice were resistant to LP-BM5-induced pathogenesis. However, further analyses strongly suggested that resistance could be attributed to strain 129-specific contamination of the known retrovirus resistance gene Fv1. Therefore, caution should be taken when interpreting phenotypes observed in these knockout mice, as strain 129-derived genetic polymorphisms may explain observed differences.

Theses and Dissertations
Decisive moments and their fleeting experiences are born from an individual’s interaction within a defined physical space. It is here at the intersection of environment and context that my work in site-specific art begins. I endeavor to create an examination of socio-political and environmental issues through a manipulation of materials, thereby altering one’s private, communal, and cultural response to them. My installations are comprised of slip casted multiples which reference the human form. I place these forms in galleries and specific exterior locations, and incorporate materials that are charged with societal discord, such as used motor oil and post-consumer detritus, …

The Osterix Reporter Mouse Identifies A Bone Marrow Skeletal Progenitor Cell Population, Sara E. Strecker
Doctoral Dissertations
Multipotent skeletal progenitor cells that reside in the bone marrow and contribute to the maintenance and repair of bone tissue are difficult to identify and, as a result, remain poorly understood. Osterix is a zinc finger transcription factor, which functions as a key regulator of bone formation. Cells of the osteoblast lineage generate bone tissue by depositing a mineralized matrix [1, 2]. Osterix is selectively expressed in cells of the osteoblast lineage and has an essential function in osteoblast commitment and bone formation [1, 3]. While it is generally accepted that Osterix is expressed …
