Design For A City State: An Overview Of Design Education In Singapore, Peer M. Sathikh

Learn X Design Conference Series

Singapore, which started its modern life as a trading port under the British rule in 1819, became a sovereign nation in 1965, breaking away from the federation of Malaya just a few years after independence. Since 1965, the leaders of Singapore have transformed Singapore many times, starting from its trading roots, to being a manufacturing centre, to financial centre, to a service economy till its present state as R&D centre for science & technology. This paper presents an overview of the development of design education in Singapore, starting with vocational schools that taught design as a skills, through the polytechnic …

Research Questions For The Archaeology Of Rural Places: Experiences From The Middle Atlantic, Wade Catts Sep 2013

Research Questions For The Archaeology Of Rural Places: Experiences From The Middle Atlantic, Wade Catts

Northeast Historical Archaeology

That some 19th-century farmsteads and other rural places have significance is generally conceded as true. Our problem as historical archaeologists is to develop research questions and directions that illuminate and explain to a broad audience the significance of the physical evidence of the sultures of agriculture in American history. This essay looks at some of the writings of early agricultural historians and draws on previous historical and archaeological farmstead studies in the Middle Atlantic region. Ideas about the success (or failure) of field approaches are presented, and suggestions for research directions that could serve as over-arching themes to tie the …

Trying To Think Progressively About 19th-Century Farms, Mary C. Beaudry Sep 2013

Trying To Think Progressively About 19th-Century Farms, Mary C. Beaudry

Northeast Historical Archaeology

Recent excavations at a 19th-century estate manager's farm at Milton, South Uist, in the Western Isles of Scotland, prompt comparison with New England farms of the same era. Of particular interest is the material signature of the move toward "progressive farming" manifested through the construction of model farms and the introduction of industrially-inspired farm management practices and technological innovations. Comparisons drawn between the Hebriden case study, Milton Farm, and the Spencer-Peirce-Little Farm in Newbury Massachusetts.

How The Past Becomes A Place: An Example From 19th-Century Maryland, Julia A. King Sep 2013

How The Past Becomes A Place: An Example From 19th-Century Maryland, Julia A. King

Northeast Historical Archaeology

This paper examines how certain landscapes were remade as places important in the collective memory in 19th-century America. Specifically, archaeological, documentary, and literary evidence are used to show how Susquehanna, a 19th-century tobacco and wheat farm in St. Mary's County, Maryland was reconfigured as a place important in the state's past. By imagining Susquehanna and the region in which it was located as a place in time, many upper and middle class Marylanders were able to reconcile the growing differences between the southern and northern parts of the state. The actions of these 19th-century men and women are not unrelated …

The Archaeology Of Agriculture And Rural Life In Northern Delaware, 1800-1940, Lu Ann De Cunzo Sep 2013

The Archaeology Of Agriculture And Rural Life In Northern Delaware, 1800-1940, Lu Ann De Cunzo

Northeast Historical Archaeology

Like our colleagues across the Northeast, Delaware archaeologists have been challenged by the state's thousands of 19th- through 20th-century agricultural sites. They range from larger farms to small tenancies and laborers' dwellings; many remain at least partially extant, many others survive only below ground. This article introduces the character and diversity, continuity and transformations of 19th- through mid 20th-century Delaware agriculture and rural life, and archaeologists' contributions to our understanding of these phenomena. Narratives of selected agricultural properties and people from New Castle County's Upper Coastal Plain illustrate the approach and the knowledge it has produced, with special emphases on …

Rethinking The Mengkom-Mixing Bowl: Salvage Archaeology At The Johannes Luyster House, A Dutch-American Farm, Gerard P. Scharfenberger, Richard F. Veit Sep 2013

Rethinking The Mengkom-Mixing Bowl: Salvage Archaeology At The Johannes Luyster House, A Dutch-American Farm, Gerard P. Scharfenberger, Richard F. Veit

Northeast Historical Archaeology

Salvage excavations at the Johannes Luyster Farm (28Mo261) revleade extensive archaeological depostis reflecting three centuries of life on a Dutch-American farm. These deposties, when taken in conjunction with the architecture of the house and surviving primary documents, provide a glimpse of the changing lifestyles of the Jersey Dutch during the 19th century. Although the Luysters maintained some aspects of their ethnic heritage, they also participated in many aspects of the larger society. Case studies of the individual sites such as this one are a first step towards understanding the interrelationships between national trends and their local manifestations. Furthermore, they highlight …

What Is It? Archaeological Evidence Of 19th-Century Agricultural Drainage Systems, Sherene Baugher Sep 2013

What Is It? Archaeological Evidence Of 19th-Century Agricultural Drainage Systems, Sherene Baugher

Northeast Historical Archaeology

Farm drainage was an integral part of the agricultural revloution of the 19th century- a tim during which farmers applied scientific practices to increase the productivity of their farms. As archaeologiests excavate larger portions of the 19th century farmsteads beyond the immediate area surrounding the farmhouse and barns, they will begin to uncover drainage systems more frequently. How do you know you have located a non-tile drainage system? What can drains actually tell you about the farmer and the farmstead? The goal of this paper is to help colleagues save time when working on farm sites by presenting a reference …

Asymmetric Dimethylarginine Blocks Nitric Oxide-Mediated Alcohol-Stimulated Cilia Beating., Todd A. Wyatt, S . M. Wells, Z . A. Alsaidi, Jane M. Devasure, E. B. Klein, Kristina L. Bailey, Joseph H. Sisson

Journal Articles: Pulmonary & Critical Care Med

The airway epithelium is exposed to alcohol during drinking through direct exhalation of volatized ethanol from the bronchial circulation. Alcohol exposure leads to a rapid increase in the cilia beat frequency (CBF) of bronchial epithelial cells followed by a chronic desensitization of cilia stimulatory responses. This effect is governed in part by the nitric oxide regulation of cyclic guanosine and adenosine monophosphate-dependent protein kinases (PKG and PKA) and is not fully understood. Asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA), an endogenous inhibitor of nitric oxide synthase, is implicated in the pathogenesis of several pulmonary disorders. We hypothesized that the inhibition of nitric oxide synthase …

Differential Joint-Specific Corticospinal Tract Projections Within The Cervical Enlargement, Curtis O. Asante, John H. Martin Sep 2013

Differential Joint-Specific Corticospinal Tract Projections Within The Cervical Enlargement, Curtis O. Asante, John H. Martin

Publications and Research

The motor cortex represents muscle and joint control and projects to spinal cord interneurons and–in many primates, including humans–motoneurons, via the corticospinal tract (CST). To examine these spinal CST anatomical mechanisms, we determined if motor cortex sites controlling individual forelimb joints project differentially to distinct cervical spinal cord territories, defined regionally and by the locations of putative last-order interneurons that were transneuronally labeled by intramuscular injection of pseudorabies virus. Motor cortex joint-specific sites were identified using intracorticalmicrostimulation. CST segmental termination fields from joint-specific sites, determined using anterograde tracers, comprised a high density core of terminations that was consistent between animals …

Parental Height And Child Growth From Birth To 2 Years In The Who Multicentre Growth Reference Study, Cutberto Garza, Elaine Borghi, Adelheid W. Onyango, Mercedes De Onis, Edward A. Frongillo Jr.

Faculty Publications

inear growth from birth to 2 years of children enrolled in the World Health Organization Multicentre Growth Reference Study was similar despite substantial parental height differences among the six study sites. Within-site variability in child length attributable to parental height was estimated by repeated measures analysis of variance using generalized linear models. This approach was also used to examine relationships among selected traits (e.g. breastfeeding duration and child morbidity) and linear growth between 6 and 24 months of age. Differences in intergenerational adult heights were evaluated within sites by comparing mid-parental heights (average of the mother's and father's heights) to …

Differential Biosynthesis Of Antioxidant Stilbenoids In Hairy Root Cultures Of Muscadine Grape And Peanut Treated With Methyl Jasmonate And Hydrogen Peroxide, Cesar Augusto Nopo-Olazabal

Student Theses and Dissertations

Stilbenoids are polyphenolic compounds that are believed to protect plants against abiotic and biotic stresses. Importantly, an increasing number of these specialized plant metabolites have been associated with potential health benefits in humans. Therefore, understanding the molecular mechanisms involved in their biosynthesis is of importance to enhance the levels of these beneficial compounds in plants. In this research we studied the biosynthesis of stilbenoids in two economically important food crops: muscadine grape and peanut. Hairy root cultures were used as biological systems because their genetic and biochemical stability facilitates the study of specialized metabolism. Selected hairy root cultures from muscadine …

Indecision : Biopsychological Frames, Sarah G. Danborn

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This project is a theoretical investigation of indecision as it has been conceptualized from a number of perspectives, including within the literature of vocational counseling, the fields of cognitive and neuropsychology, and in emerging research from social psychologists and behavioral economists. Two theory chapters utilize concepts from existential theory and Winnicott's true and selves to explore the phenomenon more deeply. A discussion chapter critiques these theories and offers suggestions for further research, as well as implementation suggestions for the clinician based on the research and theories presented.

The Danger Of Assumed Realism In Pornography : Pornography Use And Its Relationship To Sexual Consent, Hannah L. Fegley

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

Over the past few decades there have been contradictory research findings regarding the effects of pornography on attitudes and violence toward women. Researchers have recently found that the more realistic one perceives pornography to be, the more likely one is perceived positive benefits of pornography. As a result, in the current study, researchers explored how one's perceived realism and frequency of viewing impacted attitudes about sexual consent. Participants, who were 18 years and old, living in the United States, and who had viewed pornographic content online in the last 12 months, completed an online survey. T-tests revealed frequency of viewing …
