Socializing Young Readers: A Content Analysis Of Body Size Images In Caldecott Medal Winners, Linda Wedwick, Nancy Latham
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Many studies have examined gender issues in children’s literature, but a review of the literature reveals that few studies have examined the instances of fatness in the images. Studying the fat representation in the images of children’s literature is important because exposure to a variety of body types may slow the rate of children’s body dissatisfaction. The present study examines exposure to body size images in picture books. Results of this content analysis indicate that there are fewer books with fat characters when compared to those without. However, when examining every image of body size within each text, there is …

Biliterate Literature Circles: Talks As Tickets To Ride, Claudia Peralta
Literacy, Language and Culture Faculty Publications and Presentations
This study aimed to explore the impact of Literature Circles in a fourth grade bilingual classroom (Spanish and English) and investigate how classroom literary practices were framed and shaped by the classroom teacher. Further study revealed that community building, and shifts in questions affected the type of narratives constructed. During this five-month study, the researcher conducted weekly participant observations of instruction in the classroom, primarily during the language arts blocks. The researcher gave specific attention to observing a classroom practice: Literature Circles. Data was collected through the use of fieldnotes, informal and formal interviews, video- and/or audiotaping, and artifact collection. …

Pharmacological Characterization Of A Novel Non-At1, Non-At2 Angiotensin Binding Site Identified As Neurolysin, Jamala D. Swindle, Kira L. Santos, Robert C. Speth
HPD Articles
The discovery of a novel non-AT1, non-AT2 binding site for angiotensins in the rodent brain and testis that is unmasked by the organomercurial compound para-chloromercuribenzoic acid (PCMB) has catalyzed efforts to purify and characterize this protein. We recently reported that this protein is neurolysin and now report upon the specificity of this binding site for various neuropeptides. Competition binding assays in rat brain and testis used (125)I-Sar(1), Ile(8) angiotensin II (Ang II) as the radioligand in the presence of saturating concentrations of AT1 and AT2 receptor antagonists and 100 μM parachloromercuribenzoate. Primary screening of 36 peptides and other compounds at …

Slow Potentials Of The Sensorimotor Cortex During Rhythmic Movements Of The Ankle, Ryan J. Mckindles
Slow Potentials Of The Sensorimotor Cortex During Rhythmic Movements Of The Ankle, Ryan J. Mckindles
Dissertations (1934 -)
The objective of this dissertation was to more fully understand the role of the human brain in the production of lower extremity rhythmic movements. Throughout the last century, evidence from animal models has demonstrated that spinal reflexes and networks alone are sufficient to propagate ambulation. However, observations after neural trauma, such as a spinal cord injury, demonstrate that humans require supraspinal drive to facilitate locomotion. To investigate the unique nature of lower extremity rhythmic movements, electroencephalography was used to record neural signals from the sensorimotor cortex during three cyclic ankle movement experiments. First, we characterized the differences in slow movement-related …

I’ve loved anime ever since I was a little kid. I remember staying up late every Friday night to watch Toonami with my older brother. However as I’ve grown up, I’ve begun to resent the one sided femininity displayed by the majority of female anime characters. Anime is notorious for its stereotypical portrayal of female characters. Girls are usually naive and wide eyed, rushing stupidly into trouble only for the brave hero to pull them out of it. My frustration with carbon copy female heroines had gotten to the point that I considered putting my love for anime to rest. …

Listen! I entreat you to hear me, before you give vent to your opinion, for there are children and creatures alike brought forth into life each day. Some of them are born into the arms of happiness, and some, shunned by their creator at the moment of their first breath, are deemed unworthy and thrown savagely into the pits of unforgiving hell. And now, thou can listen to me and grant me thy agreement. One day, tormented ages thereafter still by the unforgiving murder of my creator, I happened across a piece of paper lying on the ground that possessed …
Halloysite Nanotube Composites For Sustained Release Of Antimocrobial Agents (Antiseptics And Antibiotics), Wenbo Wei
Doctoral Dissertations
Encapsulation of antimicrobial agents (simple antiseptics and more specific antibiotics) within micro-scale and nano-scale containers may provide prolonged and more evenly distributed drug release. One of such containers proposed at Louisiana Tech is natural halloysite clay nanotubes. Halloysite is an aluminosilicate tube with a length of approximately 1 µm, outer diameter of approximately 50 nm, and internal lumen of 15 nm. The chemical composition of halloysite is similar to more common clay–kaolinite, and it can be described as rolled sheets of kaolinite. Halloysite, loaded with drugs inside its lumen, has shown aqueous release of the loaded chemicals over 10-20 hours …

Remembering Daya Krishna And G. C. Pande: Two Giants Of Post-Independence Indian Philosophy, Jay L. Garfield, Arindam Chakrabarti
Philosophy: Faculty Publications
Daya Krishna was the public face of Indian philosophy in the first half-century after Indian independence. Nobody on the Indian scene in that period came close to him in influence or in contribution to the profession. Nobody else in the world thought as hard or as fruitfully about the relation of Indian philosophy to that of the rest of the world, and nobody else dared to think as creatively and even as heretically about the history of Indian philosophy itself. This special issue of Philosophy East and West commemorates G. C. Pande and Daya Krishna as philosophers. But we would …

The development of neuroprotective strategies to attenuate retinal ganglion cell death could lead to novel therapies for chronic optic neuropathies such as glaucoma. Intravitreal transplantation of mesenchymal stem cells slows retinal ganglion cell death in models of optic nerve injury, but the mechanism of action remains unclear. Here we characterized the neuroprotective effects of mesenchymal stem cells and mesenchymal stem cell-derived factors in organotypic retinal explant culture and an in vivo model of ocular hypertensive glaucoma. Co-culture of rat and human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells with retinal explants increased retinal ganglion cell survival, after 7 days ex vivo, by …

United States Public Health Resources
Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) belonging to certain serogroups (e.g., O157 and O26) can cause serious conditions like hemolytic-uremic syndrome (HUS), but other strains might be equally pathogenic. While virulence factors, like stx and eae, have been well studied, little is known about the prevalence of the E. coli hemolysin genes (hlyA, ehxA, e-hlyA, and sheA) in association with these factors. Hemolysins are potential virulence factors, and ehxA and hlyA have been associated with human illness, but the significance of sheA is unknown. Hence, 435 E. coli strains belonging to 62 different O serogroups …

Functional Characterization Of Metallothioneins In Arabidopsis And Barley, Nimnara Yookongkaew
Functional Characterization Of Metallothioneins In Arabidopsis And Barley, Nimnara Yookongkaew
Open Access Dissertations
Metalothioneins (MTs) are metal binding proteins that can bind metals such as Cu, Zn, and Cd but the functions of MTs in plants are largely unknown. To understand the function of MTs in Arabidopsis, T-DNA insertion mutants lacking 4 MT genes including MT1a, MT2a, MT2b and MT3 were developed. The quadruple mutant (mt1a/mt2a/mt2b/mt3) showed no visible phenotype under standard growth conditions. However, it accumulated higher Cu in leaves compared to wild type but lower Cu in seeds. Further analysis showed that triple mutants lacking both MT1a and MT2b, which are highly expressed in vascular tissues, had similar …
