The Academic And Motivational Impact Of California Gateways And Lexia Reading On English Language Learners With Disabilities, Rebecca Hayley Wilner Oct 2013

The Academic And Motivational Impact Of California Gateways And Lexia Reading On English Language Learners With Disabilities, Rebecca Hayley Wilner

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

This study examined the effectiveness of California Gateways in combination with Lexia Reading on the reading fluency and comprehension skills of 4th and 5th grade English Language Learners with mild to moderate disabilities. Oral reading fluency and maze passage fluency were examined. To evaluate the motivational impact of the intervention, participants completed a pre and post Motivation to Read Profile. A multiple baseline across participants design was used to evaluate the use of daily California Gateways lessons and Lexia Reading intervention with five students who are English language learners and have been identified with disabilities. Curriculum Based Measurement probes were …

The Indefinite Quarantine: A Public Health Review Of Chronic Inconsistencies In Sexually Violent Predator Statutes, Isaac ("Zack") D. Buck Oct 2013

The Indefinite Quarantine: A Public Health Review Of Chronic Inconsistencies In Sexually Violent Predator Statutes, Isaac ("Zack") D. Buck

Scholarly Works

Fifteen years after the Supreme Court’s decision in Kansas v. Hendricks upheld their constitutionality, sexually violent predator (SVP) statutes exist in 20 states and the federal code. Committing sex offenders indefinitely in an effort to protect the public, SVP statutes have survived academic criticism and mushrooming expense, targeting society’s most unpopular subjects and unpalatable crimes. In upholding the statutes against constitutional attack in Hendricks, the Court relied upon the state’s demonstrable power to preventively detain individuals during public health emergencies – analogous to the civil detention model of quarantine – to establish the state’s unquestioned right to involuntarily commit sex …

Tpl2 Kinase Regulates Fcγr Signaling And Immune Thrombocytopenia In Mice, Irene Kyrmizi, Marianna Ioannou, Maria Hatziapostolou, Philip N. Tsichlis, Dimitrios T. Boumpas, Ioannis Tassiulas Oct 2013

Tpl2 Kinase Regulates Fcγr Signaling And Immune Thrombocytopenia In Mice, Irene Kyrmizi, Marianna Ioannou, Maria Hatziapostolou, Philip N. Tsichlis, Dimitrios T. Boumpas, Ioannis Tassiulas

NYMC Faculty Publications

The MAPK3 Tpl2 controls innate and adaptive immunity by regulating TLR, TNF-α, and GPCR signaling in a variety of cell types. Its ablation gives rise to an anti-inflammatory phenotype characterized by resistance to LPS-induced endotoxin shock, DSS-induced colitis, and TNF-α-induced IBD. Here, we address the role of Tpl2 in autoimmunity. Our data show that the ablation and the pharmacological inhibition of Tpl2 protect mice from antiplatelet antibody-induced thrombocytopenia, a model of ITP. Thrombocytopenia in this model and in ITP is caused by phagocytosis of platelets opsonized with antiplatelet antibodies and depends on FcγR activation in splenic and hepatic myeloid cells. …

Densidad Y Abundancia De Conejo Pintado (Agouti Paca): Tres Métodos De Estimación De La Población, John Zeiger

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Marine Oil Snow Sedimentation And Flocculent Accumulation (Mossfa) Workshop, Center For Spills In The Environment Oct 2013

Marine Oil Snow Sedimentation And Flocculent Accumulation (Mossfa) Workshop, Center For Spills In The Environment

Coastal Response Research Center

The MOSSFA hypothesis is that the formation of marine snow/oil aggregates and its accumulation at the seafloor is related to events associated with the oil spill, various mitigation measures (e.g., the use of dispersants and in situ burning), and increased sediment-laden fresh water releases from Mississippi River impoundments. If this hypothesis is correct then this phenomenon takes on an added global significance as 85% of deep-water oil exploration occurs adjacent to deltaic systems. To better understand the sequence of events and the oceanographic processes involved, three of the Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative (GoMRI)

funded Centers (C-IMAGE, DEEP-C and ECOGIG), …

Observation-Based Algorithm Development For Subsurface Hydrology In Northern Temperate Wetlands, Chun-Mei Chiu Oct 2013

Observation-Based Algorithm Development For Subsurface Hydrology In Northern Temperate Wetlands, Chun-Mei Chiu

Open Access Dissertations

This study investigates wetland subsurface hydrology, as well as biogeochemistry - which is strongly influenced by water and temperature dynamics - as these interactions are expected to be highly significant, yet remain poorly represented in current ecosystem and climate models.

Northern wetlands have received widespread public attention due to steadily increasing summer mean global temperatures, extreme precipitation events and higher rates of natural greenhouse gas emissions, as well as the significant impacts on them due to human activities. The goal of my graduate research has been to improve quantification of the role of subsurface hydrology in northern wetlands by using …

Human Economic Choice As Costly Information Processing, John Dickhaut, Vernon L. Smith, Baohua Xin, Aldo Rustichini Oct 2013

Human Economic Choice As Costly Information Processing, John Dickhaut, Vernon L. Smith, Baohua Xin, Aldo Rustichini

Accounting Faculty Articles and Research

We develop and test a model that provides a unified account of the neural processes underlying behavior in a classical economic choice task. The model describes in a stylized way brain processes engaged in evaluating information provided by the experimental stimuli, and produces a consistent account of several important features of the decision process in different environments: e.g., when the probability is specified or not (ambiguous choices). These features include the choices made, the time to decide, the error rate in choice, and the patterns of neural activation. The model predicts that the further two stimuli are from each other …

Mongolian National Parks: Competing Interests And Institutional Viability In A Still Emerging Protected Areas System, Kieryn Wurts Oct 2013

Mongolian National Parks: Competing Interests And Institutional Viability In A Still Emerging Protected Areas System, Kieryn Wurts

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

In Mongolia, 17% of the total landmass is designated as one of four kinds of “protected areas”—Strictly protected areas, national parks, nature reserves, and natural historical monuments. This study focuses primarily on national parks as a civil institution, through on the ground interviewing of ten individuals employed in the protected areas system, field-notes and observations, and community surveying totaling 38 respondents at two research locations, Hustai-Nuruu National Park and Lake Khovsgol National Park. Protected areas are constructed civil spaces, and as a result are sites of competing societal interests--the interests of scientists and conservationists, of tourism and business interests, and …
