Pastures For Goats And Sheep, Greg Brann
Pastures For Goats And Sheep, Greg Brann
Kentucky Grazing Conference
Pasture for sheep is not that different than that for cattle but pasture for goats is very different. Sheep are grazers like cattle whereas goats are browsers like deer. Even though grass and clover are not a goats preference if all of the forage present is grass and clover goats will eat it. Due to goats and sheep being more prey animals than cattle they don’t like to wade off into tall vegetation, also it takes more energy for them to move through tall growth. Many plants that we traditionally consider weeds become desirable forbs when goats or sheep are …

Role Of Legumes In Pastures, Garry D. Lacefield
Kentucky Grazing Conference
Successful livestock production is dependent on forage programs which supply large quantities of adequate quality, homegrown feed. A major percentage of the feed units for beef (83%) and dairy (61%) cattle come from forages. In addition, forages supply an estimated 91%, 72%, 15% and 99% of the nutrients consumed by sheep and goats, horses, swine and ruminant wildlife, respectively.

Mycological Study For A Management Plan Of A Neotropical Show Cave (Brazil), Erika Linzi Silva Taylor, Maria Aparecida De Resende Stoianoff, Rodrigo Lopes Ferreira
International Journal of Speleology
Caves are stable environments with characteristics favoring the development of microorganisms. The allocthonous input of organic matter and microbes into the warm Neotropical caves may favor the development of filamentous fungi, including pathogenic species. Histoplasma capsulatum is a pathogenic species commonly found in caves and associated with bat and bird guano. Many Brazilian caves have been historically visited due to scenic and religious tourism. The objective of this study was to perform a microbiology study for a management plan of a show cave in Brazil, focusing on the presence and distribution of pathogenic and opportunistic fungi in the cave. Statistics …

Microglial Responses After Ischemic Stroke And Intracerebral Hemorrhage, Roslyn A. Taylor, Lauren H. Sansing
Microglial Responses After Ischemic Stroke And Intracerebral Hemorrhage, Roslyn A. Taylor, Lauren H. Sansing
UCHC Articles - Research
Stroke is a leading cause of death worldwide. Ischemic stroke is caused by blockage of blood vessels in the brain leading to tissue death, while intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) occurs when a blood vessel ruptures, exposing the brain to blood components. Both are associated with glial toxicity and neuroinflammation. Microglia, as the resident immune cells of the central nervous system (CNS), continually sample the environment for signs of injury and infection. Under homeostatic conditions, they have a ramified morphology and phagocytose debris. After stroke, microglia become activated, obtain an amoeboid morphology, and release inflammatory cytokines (the M1 phenotype). However, microglia can …

BACKGROUND: New strategies for the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) are needed, given that currently available chemotherapeutics are inefficient. Since tumor growth reflects the net balance between pro-proliferative and death signaling, agents shifting the equilibrium toward the latter are of considerable interest. The TWEAK:Fn14 signaling axis promotes tumor cell proliferation and tumor angiogenesis, while TRAIL:TRAIL-receptor (TRAIL-R) interactions selectively induce apoptosis in malignant cells. Fn14•TRAIL, a fusion protein bridging these two pathways, has the potential to inhibit tumor growth, by interfering with TWEAK:Fn14 signaling, while at the same time enforcing TRAIL:TRAIL-R-mediated apoptosis. Consequently, Fn14•TRAIL's capacity to inhibit HCC growth was tested. …
A Real-Time 3d Engine For Students, Joshua Gustafson, Dr. Robert P. Burton
A Real-Time 3d Engine For Students, Joshua Gustafson, Dr. Robert P. Burton
Journal of Undergraduate Research
A real-time 3D engine is a software system which allows a computer to generate and display three-dimensional graphics at interactive speeds. Faster, more capable, and less expensive video hardware has encouraged improvement in real-time engines and a diversification of their applications. They have been used traditionally in applications such as games and simulators, but increasingly are appearing in other applications such as home modeling, ticket purchasing, and other uses. Real-time 3D engines are therefore an area of understandable interest and considerable value to students of Computer Science.

Retinal-Bio-Amine Synthesis Related To Age-Related Macular Degeneration, Matthew Sparks, Dr. Heidi Vollmer-Snarr
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause for blindness among the world’s elderly population1. As the central region of the retina, known as the macula, is damaged and begins to deteriorate, central vision becomes clouded. This vision loss progresses until the affected person becomes completely and permanently blind. To date, AMD is an incurable disease.

In nocturnal rodents, brain areas that promote wakefulness have a circadian pattern of neural activation that mirrors the sleep/wake cycle, with more neural activation during the active phase than during the rest phase. To investigate whether differences in temporal patterns of neural activity in wake-promoting regions contribute to differences in daily patterns of wakefulness between nocturnal and diurnal species, we assessed Fos expression patterns in the tuberomammillary (TMM), supramammillary (SUM), and raphe nuclei of male grass rats maintained in a 12:12 h light-dark cycle. Day-night profiles of Fos expression were observed in the ventral and dorsal TMM, in the SUM, …

Adolescence is a complex transitional period in human development, composing physical maturation, cognitive and social behavioral changes. The objective of this study is to investigate sex differences in white matter development and the associations between intelligence and white matter microstructure in the adolescent brain using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and tract-based spatial statistics (TBSS). In a cohort of 16 typically-developing adolescents aged 13 to 17 years, longitudinal DTI data were recorded from each subject at two time points that were one year apart. We used TBSS to analyze the diffusion indices including fractional anisotropy (FA), mean diffusivity (MD), axial diffusivity …

Electrocorticography: ECoG) has gained increased notoriety over the past decade as a possible recording modality for Brain-Computer Interface: BCI) applications that offers a balance of minimal invasiveness to the patient in addition to robust spectral information over time. More recently, the scale of ECoG devices has begun to shrink to the order of micrometer diameter contacts and millimeter spacings with the intent of extracting more independent signals for BCI control within less cortical real-estate. However, most control signals to date, whether within the field of ECoG or any of the more seasoned recording techniques, have translated their control signals to …

Are Guatemalan K’Ekchi Mormons Really Protestants? A Comparative Look At K’Ekchi Stories, Robert E. M. Spencer, Dr. John Hawkins
Journal of Undergraduate Research
With blackness surrounding us both, Oscar stumbled over the words. Here I was living in the highlands of northern Guatemala, in a dirt floor shack, sitting on my wooden board bed, listening to the struggles of a Mayan man trying to read by candlelight. He was the product of’ Mayan tradition, Catholicism, Protestantism, and Mormonism. With such a mixture I wondered what I would discover, what were the stories that shaped his and his family’s lives? Were they traditional stories? biblical? from a new source? or did his semi-literacy create a barrier to his learning of any stories?

Experimental And Computational Assessment Of Mechanical Circulatory Assistance Of A Patient-Specific Fontan Vessel Configuration, Steven Chopski
Experimental And Computational Assessment Of Mechanical Circulatory Assistance Of A Patient-Specific Fontan Vessel Configuration, Steven Chopski
Theses and Dissertations
The treatment of single ventricle anomalies is a formidable challenge for clinical teams caring for patients with congenital heart disease. Those patients fortunate to survive surgical palliation contend with lifelong physical limitations and late stage pathophysiology. A mechanical blood pump specifically designed to increase pressure in the great veins would augment flow through the lungs and provide hemodynamic stability until a donor heart is located. To support the development of such medical devices, this research characterized the fluid dynamics of mechanical assistance in the Fontan circulation by performing numerical analyses and particle image velocimetry (PIV) studies in a patient-specific in …

A Preliminary Report On The Excavation Of A 19th-Century Derelict Vessel In Cape Neddick, Maine: The Southern New Jersey Coasting Schooner Annabella, Stefan H. Claesson
Northeast Historical Archaeology
In 1995, the Insistute of Maritime History conducted the archaeological investigation of a 19th-century coasting schooner, Annabella, in Cape Neddick, Maine. This type of craft, though ubiquitous on the eastern seaboard in the 19th century, has not been documented in an archaeological setting to date in New England. Maine played a pivotal role in America's economy, supplying the southern states and Caribbean Islands with a seemingly inexhaustible supply of raw materials such as timber, stone, ice, lime, and agricultural goods. This vessel was primarily involved in the transportation of cordwood along the east coast of the United States. Its heavily-built, …
