The Voice: 2012-Present

The headline article "Student opinions mixed on Campus Council changes" reports on the lukewarm response to an issues-based rather than group-based Campus Council. "Physics professor awarded research grant" reflects on Dr. Susan Lehman's research grant gifted by the National Science Foundation (NSF). The News Section also reports on the largest donation at that point in the college's history, gifted by Ruth Whitmore and A. Morris Williams. In Features, the Voice discusses the Improv club Don't Throw Shoes' expansion in both membership and show frequency. Another article, "Recommended running routes around campus," gives readers a beginner and expert route to run …

Population Genetics Of The Eastern Hellbender (Cryptobranchus Alleganiensis Alleganiensis) Across Multiple Spatial Scales., Shem D. Unger, Olin E. Rhodes Jr., Trent M. Sutton, Rod N. Williams

Department of Forestry & Natural Resources Faculty Publications

Conservation genetics is a powerful tool to assess the population structure of species and provides a framework for informing management of freshwater ecosystems. As lotic habitats become fragmented, the need to assess gene flow for species of conservation management becomes a priority. The eastern hellbender (Cryptobranchus alleganiensis alleganiensis) is a large, fully aquatic paedamorphic salamander. Many populations are experiencing declines throughout their geographic range, yet the genetic ramifications of these declines are currently unknown. To this end, we examined levels of genetic variation and genetic structure at both range-wide and drainage (hierarchical) scales. We collected 1,203 individuals from …

Membrane Vesicles Nucleate Mineralo-Organic Nanoparticles And Induce Carbonate Apatite Precipitation In Human Body Fluids, Cheng-Yeu Wu, Jan Martel, Wei-Yun Cheng, Chao-Chih He, David M. Ojcius, John Ding-E. Young

All Dugoni School of Dentistry Faculty Articles

Recent studies indicate that membrane vesicles (MVs) secreted by various cells are associated with human diseases, including arthritis, atherosclerosis, cancer, and chronic kidney disease. The possibility that MVs may induce the formation of mineralo-organic nanoparticles (NPs) and ectopic calcification has not been investigated so far. Here, we isolated MVs ranging in size between 20 and 400 nm from human serum and FBS using ultracentrifugation and sucrose gradient centrifugation. The MV preparations consisted of phospholipid-bound vesicles containing the serum proteins albumin, fetuin-A, and apolipoprotein A1; the mineralization-associated enzyme alkaline phosphatase; and the exosome proteins TNFR1 and CD63. Notably, we observed that …

"Nobody Wants To Eat Them Alive:” Ethical Dilemmas And Dual Media Narratives On Domestic Rabbits As Pets And Commodity, Gayane F. Torosyan, Brian Lowe Oct 2013

"Nobody Wants To Eat Them Alive:” Ethical Dilemmas And Dual Media Narratives On Domestic Rabbits As Pets And Commodity, Gayane F. Torosyan, Brian Lowe

Proceedings of the New York State Communication Association

Using semiotic analysis, this study explores changes occurring in the societal perception of rabbits as farm animals as juxtaposed to their increasing popularity as domestic companions. This study is based on a preliminary hypothesis that rabbits are increasingly perceived and portrayed in media as domestic companion animals similar to cats and guinea pigs, which challenges a parallel narrative that views rabbits as commodities for their meat and fur. Operating within a theoretical framework that considers news media as both socially constructed reality and recorded history, the study examines the dynamics of change in numbers of coded news narratives drawn as …

Walt Disney World: Marxism And Myth Creation, Caroline Loy Oct 2013

Walt Disney World: Marxism And Myth Creation, Caroline Loy

Proceedings of the New York State Communication Association

The Disney Corporation is a near-perfect case study in the power and profit that can accompany the harnessing and mobilization of modern society’s relationship with media and spectacle. Rather than attempt the dizzying task of offering analysis of the entirety of Disney’s offerings, this paper will focus exclusively on The Walt Disney World Resort theme parks: Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Disney’s Animal Kingdom, and Disney’s Hollywood Studios – collectively known as Disney World. These parks offer a useful case study in theories of media events and spectacle, because they combine aspects of media consumption with participation, encouraging visitors to not simply …

Mediated Bodies: The Construction Of A Wife, Mother, And The Female Body In Television Sitcoms: Roseanne, Saniya Lee Ghanoui Oct 2013

Mediated Bodies: The Construction Of A Wife, Mother, And The Female Body In Television Sitcoms: Roseanne, Saniya Lee Ghanoui

Proceedings of the New York State Communication Association

After first examining several theoretical concepts related to the construction of gender on television and the way in which women are characterized, this paper examines the television show Roseanne to explore the way it changed the representation of a feminist on television. No longer did women have to be childless and career-minded to be equal to men or in some cases better than men, as the character Roseanne Conner reveals on the show. Rather, women were able to articulate their feminist outlooks through their opinions, expressions, and actions. I break the show into four distinct notions of gendered representations: socioeconomic …

Keynote: Fast Media/Media Fast – Tom Cooper, Tom Cooper

Proceedings of the New York State Communication Association

This Keynote address was delivered at the 70th annual New York State Communication Association Conference on October 12, 2012. Dr. Cooper showcases an overview of some of the highlights in the history of media ethics research and key conclaves. His “overview of overviews” will lead to an examination of the epistemology and ecology of an important overview topic in the field – media saturation. Just as Thoreau went to Walden to gain a perspective on the environment of his day, Dr. Cooper conducted a “media fast” to examine the media environment of the 1980s and has been taking his classes …

Harmonic Text-Painting In Franz Liszt’S Lieder, Richard Bass, Heather De Savage, Patricia Grimm Oct 2013

Harmonic Text-Painting In Franz Liszt’S Lieder, Richard Bass, Heather De Savage, Patricia Grimm

Gamut: Online Journal of the Music Theory Society of the Mid-Atlantic

Despite their effectiveness and general appeal, Liszt’s Lieder have not attracted the same level of interest among scholars and analysts as those of other first-rank composers of the nineteenth century. Liszt’s innovative approach to harmony, which includes a high degree of chromaticism and enharmonic shifts, along with frequent changes of tonal focus and tonal ambiguity, often frustrates efforts at analysis that attempt to reveal unified tonal structures. These factors have encouraged a view of this repertoire as uneven or inconsistent. In this study we explain Liszt’s distinctive approach to text setting as a dichotomy between traditional and progressive tonal-harmonic practices …

Motherland, Office Of Arts + Cultural Programming, Peak Performances At Montclair State University

2013-2014 Raise the Bar

Winding its way through airbrushed beauty, boob jobs and Botox, victim blaming, slut shaming, the might of motherhood and the challenge of childlessness, Motherland is a funny, moving show about having it all. With universal appeal and a potent mix of live music, theater, and dance, Motherland is a call to arms: one that raises a finger (guess which one) at the shallow hypocrisies of our time and asks “where are we now?”

In utero exposure to opiates may affect autonomic functioning of the fetus and newborn. We investigated heart rate variability (HRV) as a measure of autonomic stability in prenatal opiate-exposed neonates (n = 14) and in control term infants (n = 10). Electrocardiographic data during both non-nutritive and nutritive sucking were evaluated for RR intervals, heart rate (HR), standard deviation of the consecutive RR intervals (SDRR), standard deviation of the differences of consecutive RR intervals (SDDRR), and the power spectral densities in low and high frequency bands. In controls, mean HR increased significantly, 143-161 per min (p = …

Stakeholders' Perceptions Of Foreign Aid And An Ngo-Driven Project: A Case Study Of Sagarmatha National Park Forestry Project In Khumbu, Nepal, Chet Prasad Bhatta, Michal Bardecki

Himalayan Policy Research Conference

Even though foreign aid and NGOs were established with good intentions, the results associated with NGO-led development in developing countries are mixed. Nepal is an ideal location for studying the impact of foreign aid and NGO involvement in rural development as the numbers of NGOs grew from just 293 in 1990 to more than 27,000 in 2010 (SWC, 2010). NGOs in Nepal have established themselves as important stakeholders in the development process. They claimed to have positively impacted the lives of rural communities and are established as partners in the development process of the country. However, several scholars disagree with …

A Molecular Mechanism Regulating The Timing Of Corticogeniculate Innervation, Justin Brooks Oct 2013

A Molecular Mechanism Regulating The Timing Of Corticogeniculate Innervation, Justin Brooks

Theses and Dissertations

Visual system development requires the formation of precise circuitry in the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus (dLGN) of the thalamus. Although much work has examined the molecular mechanisms by which retinal axons target and form synapses in dLGN, much less is known about the mechanisms that coordinate the formation of non-retinal inputs in dLGN. These non-retinal inputs represent ~90% of the terminals that form in dLGN. Interestingly, recently reports show that the targeting and formation of retinal and non-retinal inputs are temporally orchestrated. dLGN relay neurons are first innervated by retinal axons, and it is only after retinogeniculate synapses form that …

Personal Characteristics and Learning Preference in End-of-Life Decision Making of

Chronically Ill Community Dwelling Elders

Purpose and Background: Clear decision-making (DM) about end-of-life [EOL] contributes to a good death This requires knowledge of life-sustaining treatment with lack of knowledge contributing to feelings of decisional conflict Decision aids can increase knowledge, but elders' preferred learning methods are unknown. Identifying characteristics associated with preferred learning method and decisional conflict can help nurses tailor information to assist in …

The G-Protein-Coupled Estrogen Receptor Agonist G-1 Suppresses Proliferation Of Ovarian Cancer Cells By Blocking Tubulin Polymerization., Cheng Wang, Xiangmin Lv, Chunbo He, G Hua, M-Y Tsai, John S. Davis

Journal Articles: Obstetrics & Gynecology

The G-protein-coupled estrogen receptor 1 (GPER) has recently been reported to mediate the non-genomic action of estrogen in different types of cells and tissues. G-1 (1-[4-(6-bromobenzo[1,3] dioxol-5yl)-3a,4,5,9b-tetrahydro-3H-cyclopenta[c]quinolin-8-yl]-ethanone) was developed as a potent and selective agonist for GPER. G-1 has been shown to induce the expression of genes and activate pathways that facilitate cancer cell proliferation by activating GPER. Here we demonstrate that G-1 has an anticancer potential with a mechanism similar to vinca alkaloids, the commonly used chemotherapy drugs. We found that G-1 blocks tubulin polymerization and thereby interrupts microtubule assembly in ovarian cancer cells leading to the arrest of …
