ARTISTS AND DESIGNERS TEND TO QUESTION, PUSH, CHALLENGE, take risks—as part of the pure pleasure of making. These are things you’re expected to do, just as you’re expected to think outside the box, color outside the lines, question the rules, defy expectations. The freedom of thought art and design offer may be what has inspired people to make objects of beauty and wonder since well before we began writing and recording our own history. Yet, as liberating as it sounds, that freedom is also a challenge. As alums you know how to probe and ponder, and deliberately work with materials …

Toward A Sustainable Future: An Environmental Agenda For The Second Term Of The Obama Administration, David M. Uhlmann Jan 2013

Toward A Sustainable Future: An Environmental Agenda For The Second Term Of The Obama Administration, David M. Uhlmann

Much was at stake in the Presidential election of 2012, which was marked by heated debate over the trajectory of the economy, the expiration of the Bush tax cuts, and the fat of the President's health care plan. The candidates disagreed about nearly every issue from foreign policy and the war on terror to a woman's right to choose and same-sex marriage. Lost amid the din and never mentioned in the Presidential debates or most of the campaign speeches was another divisive topic: how our environmental laws and policies should address global climate change and chart a sustainable future for …

Ash2 Acts As An Ecdysone Receptor Coactivator By Stabilizing The Histone Methyltransferase Trr., Albert Carbonell, Alexander Mazo, Florenci Serras, Montserrat Corominas

Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Faculty Papers

The molting hormone ecdysone triggers chromatin changes via histone modifications that are important for gene regulation. On hormone activation, the ecdysone receptor (EcR) binds to the SET domain-containing histone H3 methyltransferase trithorax-related protein (Trr). Methylation of histone H3 at lysine 4 (H3K4me), which is associated with transcriptional activation, requires several cofactors, including Ash2. We find that ash2 mutants have severe defects in pupariation and metamorphosis due to a lack of activation of ecdysone-responsive genes. This transcriptional defect is caused by the absence of the H3K4me3 marks set by Trr in these genes. We present evidence that Ash2 interacts with Trr …

Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Faculty Papers

Phosphorylation is considered a key event in the signalling and regulation of the μ opioid receptor (MOPr). Here, we used mass spectroscopy to determine the phosphorylation status of the C-terminal tail of the rat MOPr expressed in human embryonic kidney 293 (HEK-293) cells. Under basal conditions, MOPr is phosphorylated on Ser(363) and Thr(370), while in the presence of morphine or [D-Ala2, NMe-Phe4, Gly-ol5]-enkephalin (DAMGO), the COOH terminus is phosphorylated at three additional residues, Ser(356) , Thr(357) and Ser(375). Using N-terminal glutathione S transferase (GST) fusion proteins of the cytoplasmic, C-terminal tail of MOPr and point mutations of the same, we …

Biodiesel Production From Candlenut And Calodendrum Capense Seeds: Process Design And Technological Assessment, Dennis Mogire Ndaya Jan 2013

Biodiesel Production From Candlenut And Calodendrum Capense Seeds: Process Design And Technological Assessment, Dennis Mogire Ndaya

All Master’s Theses

This project was based on biodiesel production from candlenut and calodendrum capense seeds using conventional and biotechnological technique and determination of the oil yields and biodiesel quality. The driving force for large-scale use of biodiesel has been the need to reduce the harmful emissions that result from the burning of petroleum oil as well as our dependence on diminishing reserves of petroleum oil. The aim of the study was to extract oil from Candlenut tree and Calodendrum capense seeds using conventional techniques and determine conditions for optimum oil yields. The oil from the two non-edible plant feedstocks was obtained using …

Characterization Of Flavonoids From Candidate Striga Weed Controlling Food Legumes; Cicer Arietinum L. And Vigna Radiata L., Anna Akumu Anyango

All Master’s Theses

In Africa, intercropping of some legumes with cereal crops has been found to cause remarkable reduction of Striga infestation and improved production of cereal crop. Desmodium uncinatum controls Striga infestation in intercrop with cereals through an allelopathic mechanism, which involves post-germination growth inhibitors exuded from the roots. Allelopathy is a natural and environmentally friendly technique, which has a potential to be a new approach for weed control. A standardized profiling method based on Reverse Phase-High Performance Liquid Chromatography (RP-HPLC) and Liquid Chromatography coupled with Mass Spectrometry (LC/MS) was used to identify flavonoids in extracts of chickpea (Cicer arietinum) and mung …

Current Approaches In Chemical Ecology Using Regionally Adapted Sustainable Methods, Eva Winter Jan 2013

Current Approaches In Chemical Ecology Using Regionally Adapted Sustainable Methods, Eva Winter

All Master’s Theses

Kenya is an African developing country situated at the equator ranking 157th of 177 countries in the human development index. Agriculture is next to tourism the most important economic sector with 24 % of the GDP. Poverty prevalence is highest with small holder farmers. A promissing approach to reduce this precarious condition is the implementation of organic agriculture. 1. Establishment of certified organic cash crop production for a domestic and/or an export market and 2. dissemination of common methods in organic agriculture to subsistently living small holder farmers are the two major strategies of the approach. Both have different positive …

Writing The Visual In "Baroni: Un Viaje" And Other Recent Work By Sergio Chejfec, Margaret Carson Jan 2013

Writing The Visual In "Baroni: Un Viaje" And Other Recent Work By Sergio Chejfec, Margaret Carson

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation has three parts. First, I explore the ways in which word intersects with image in several recent texts by the contemporary Argentine writer Sergio Chejfec, whose oeuvre is replete with verbal descriptions of visual artifacts. Second, as a complement to the critical essay, I present my English translation of Chejfec's Baroni: un viaje (2007), a novel featuring the Venezuelan artist Rafaela Baroni, whose extraordinary wood carvings of Virgins, saints and other figures are described in key passages. Third, as a bridge between these two parts, I reflect on the related critical discourses of ekphrasis and translation and on …

Responses To Pyrethroids In Heavy Metal Tolerant Anopheles Gambiae Vector Of Malaria, Fauzia Khagai Musasia Jan 2013

Responses To Pyrethroids In Heavy Metal Tolerant Anopheles Gambiae Vector Of Malaria, Fauzia Khagai Musasia

All Master’s Theses

Anopheles gambiae mosquito, the principle Afro-tropical vector of malaria, has been documented in habitats with heavy metals in excess of natural loads. The mosquito has also displayed resistance to most conventional insecticides, and potential to resist challenges by heavy metals. Investigations were conducted in strains of An. gambiae ss, in which tolerance to cadmium and lead heavy metals were established. This study was undertaken to determine any putative relationship between tolerance to (cadmium and lead) heavy metals, and resistance to pyrethroid insecticide in An. gambiae. Tolerance to cadmium and lead heavy metals was developed in larval stages and this development …

Protective Role Of Antioxidant In Ameliorating African Trypanosomiasis - Induced Brain Degeneration In A Mouse Model, James Nyabuga Nyariki Jan 2013

Protective Role Of Antioxidant In Ameliorating African Trypanosomiasis - Induced Brain Degeneration In A Mouse Model, James Nyabuga Nyariki

All Master’s Theses

Late stage Human African Trypanosomiasis (HAT) is manifested by brain degeneration following infection by Trypanasoma brucei rhodensiense and Trypanasoma brucei gambiense parasites. This stage can only be treated with melarsoprol (Mel B) which inadvertently induces Post Treatment Reactive Encephalopathy (PTRE) and a mortality of 5% among HAT infected patients. This is an unacceptable mortality for a modern human drug. Investigations were conducted to establish the protective role of Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) and endogenous antioxidants (Manganese Superoxide dismutase (MnSOD), Glutathione Reductase (GR), Copper-Zinc Superoxide dismutase (SOD-1) and reduced glutathione (GSH)) against PTRE and putative resultant brain degeneration in a mouse model. …

Effect Of Temperature On The Efficacy Of Metarhizium Anisopliae (Metchnikoff) Sorokin In The Control Of Western Flower Thrips In French Beans, Maureen Nandwa Kuboka

All Master’s Theses

Metarhizium anisopliae isolate ICIPE69 is a highly virulent fungal pathogen against several thrips species such as western flower thrips (Frankliniella occidentalis), bean flower thrips (Megalurothrips sjostedti), onion thrips (Thrips tabaci) and others infesting key vegetable crops in Africa. Recently the isolate has been commercialized for pest control under the trade name, Campaign ®. The efficacy of the entomopathogenic fungi is known to be influenced by the prevailing climatic conditions with temperature being a key climate driver. This study aimed to predict the efficacy of Campaign® for thrips control in different Agro ecological zones (AEZ) in Kenya. To achieve this, effects …

Log Ratio Methodology For Analysis Of Compositional Data: A Case Of Olfactometer Bioassay Data From Insect Behavioural Studies, Anthony Raymond Epel Jan 2013

Log Ratio Methodology For Analysis Of Compositional Data: A Case Of Olfactometer Bioassay Data From Insect Behavioural Studies, Anthony Raymond Epel

All Master’s Theses

Researchers are often times confronted with compositional data in insect choice studies. The choice of a statistical method to model this type of data is always not obvious. In this study, three approaches for analysis of compositional data from choice tests made by the predatory parasitoid Cotesia sesamaie Cameron in a four-arm olfactometer was explored using centered, additive and isometric log ratio transformations. Oviposition induced plant volatiles (OIPVs), herbivore induced plant volatiles (HIPVs), and two controls were tested in the four-arm olfactometer. The response variable measured was time spent in each field of the olfactometer, when the time to observe …

Socio-Economic Analysis Of Dairy Feed Technologies Promoted In The Kenyan Highlands, Gregory Ndwandwa Sikumba Jan 2013

Socio-Economic Analysis Of Dairy Feed Technologies Promoted In The Kenyan Highlands, Gregory Ndwandwa Sikumba

All Master’s Theses

The cost of feed is one of the major constraints to dairy cattle production in sub-Saharan Africa. East Africa dairy development project is promoting several feed technologies for dairy cattle in order to reduce costs and increase milk production and profits. Research was conducted to identify factors that affect farmers' uptake of feed technologies, cost of feed and factors driving dairy milk yield through improved technologies and practices. There has however been no studies related to cost benefit analysis of dairy cattle feed or a measure of efficiency of dairy feed technologies in Kenyan highlands. In East Africa and the …

Imagining A Same-Sex Marriage Decision Based On Dignity: Considering Human Experience In Constitutional Law, Danieli Evans Jan 2013

Imagining A Same-Sex Marriage Decision Based On Dignity: Considering Human Experience In Constitutional Law, Danieli Evans

Articles

California’s Proposition 8 allows same sex couples to join through civil unions, which grant the legal benefits afforded to married couples but denies them the official label of “marriage.” The lower court eschewed the question of whether Proposition 8 burdens any fundamental right by concluding there is not even a rational basis (the minimum standard for the constitutionality of any law) for this law, as its sole effect is to deny same sex couples the designation of marriage.

We appreciate the lower court’s caution not to extend our fundamentalrights jurisprudence beyond precedent. However, we are positioned to elaborate fundamental constitutional …

Property, Privacy And Power: Rethinking The Fourth Amendment In The Wake Of U.S. V. Jones, Dana Raigrodski Jan 2013

Property, Privacy And Power: Rethinking The Fourth Amendment In The Wake Of U.S. V. Jones, Dana Raigrodski

Articles

This Article seeks to uncover invisible gender, race, and class biases driving modern Fourth Amendment discourse. Unlike traditional theories, which tend to view the Fourth Amendment through the lens of either privacy or property, this Article advances a theory focusing on the real issues of power and control that fuel Fourth Amendment jurisprudence. Specifically, the Article exposes the private/public and home/market dichotomies that are central to the Supreme Court rhetoric as arbitrary and artificial. It finds that current Fourth Amendment discourse protects the interest of white, privileged men and perpetuates male ideology as well as male domination. That focus leaves …

Escaping Entity-Centrism In Financial Services Regulation, Anita K. Krug Jan 2013

Escaping Entity-Centrism In Financial Services Regulation, Anita K. Krug

Articles

In the ongoing discussions about financial services regulation, one critically important topic has not been recognized, let alone addressed. That topic is what this Article calls the “entity-centrism” of financial services regulation. Laws and rules are entity-centric when they assume that a financial services firm is a stand-alone entity, operating separately from and independently of any other entity. They are entity-centric, therefore, when the specific requirements and obligations they comprise are addressed only to an abstract and solitary “firm,” with little or no contemplation of affiliates, parent companies, subsidiaries, or multi-entity enterprises. Regulatory entity-centrism is not an isolated phenomenon, as …

The Modern Corporation Magnified: Managerial Accountability In Financial Services Holding Companies, Anita K. Krug Jan 2013

The Modern Corporation Magnified: Managerial Accountability In Financial Services Holding Companies, Anita K. Krug

Articles

This Article's goal is to revisit early and thoughtful commentary on the fundamental problem of the large corporate enterprise--managerial accountability to shareholders-- to show that this fundamental problem is dramatically pronounced--magnified, if you will--in the types of enterprises that were at the center of the financial crisis, whether too big to fail or not. In particular, The Modern Corporation articulated that the evolution of economic organization has separated the beneficial ownership of property from those who control it and that this disjunction has created an irresolvable tension between shareholders and management. Nowhere is that tension more pronounced than in the …

Against Notice Skepticism In Privacy (And Elsewhere), M. Ryan Calo Jan 2013

Against Notice Skepticism In Privacy (And Elsewhere), M. Ryan Calo

Articles

What follows is an exploration of innovative new ways to deliver privacy notice. Unlike traditional notice that relies upon text or symbols to convey information, emerging strategies of “visceral” notice leverage a consumer’s very experience of a product or service to warn or inform. A regulation might require that a cell phone camera make a shutter sound so people know their photo is being taken. Or a law could incentivize websites to be more formal (as opposed to casual) wherever they collect personal information, as formality tends to place people on greater guard about what they disclose. The thesis of …

Linking Obesity To Colorectal Cancer: Recent Insights Into Plausible Biological Mechanisms, Catherine Guffey Jan 2013

Linking Obesity To Colorectal Cancer: Recent Insights Into Plausible Biological Mechanisms, Catherine Guffey

Theses and Dissertations

Obesity has emerged as a leading environmental risk factor for the development of CRC. However, the mechanisms underlying this relationship have not yet been fully explained. Recent literature has focused on 1) inflammatory processes, 2) adipokines, and 3) estrogen. Obesity-enhanced inflammation is largely orchestrated by increases in adipose tissue macrophages leading to the secretion of TNF-alpha, MCP-1, and IL-6, all of which are linked to CRC. Adiponectin is decreased with obesity and has been reported to be negatively associated with CRC, while leptin, which is increased, is positively associated with the disease. Estrogen has been shown to influence CRC, although …

How Species Richness And Total Abundance Constrain The Distribution Of Abundance, Kenneth J. Locey, Ethan P. White Jan 2013

How Species Richness And Total Abundance Constrain The Distribution Of Abundance, Kenneth J. Locey, Ethan P. White

Biology Faculty Publications

The species abundance distribution (SAD) is one of the most intensively studied distributions in ecology and its hollow-curve shape is one of ecology’s most general patterns. We examine the SAD in the context of all possible forms having the same richness (S) and total abundance (N), i.e. the feasible set. We find that feasible sets are dominated by similarly-shaped hollow-curves, most of which are highly correlated with empirical SADs (most R2 values > 75%), revealing a strong influence of N and S on the form of the SAD and an a priori explanation for the ubiquitous hollow-curve. Empirical SADs are often …

General Reproductive Properties In Pigs, İrfan Tur Jan 2013

General Reproductive Properties In Pigs, İrfan Tur

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Pig breeding is usually undertaken for fat and meat production, but different sectors (cosmetics industry, pharmaceutical industry, medical sector, etc.) can also use pigs for alternate purposes. Pork is evaluated based on the status of an amended law regarding butchers' meat in Turkey. There have been 25 pig farms registered in Turkey since 7 July 2006 in the framework of compliance with the European Union. On average, a sow has 2.3 farrowings per year, producing 9.5 to 12.5 piglets per litter. It is important that high proportions of selected replacement gilts reach puberty at an early age in order to …
