Preschool Children’S Conservation Reasoning And Understanding About Nature, Julia C. Torquati, Julia Kroeker, Carmun Kok Nov 2013

Preschool Children’S Conservation Reasoning And Understanding About Nature, Julia C. Torquati, Julia Kroeker, Carmun Kok

The Nebraska Educator: A Student-Led Journal

This research uses Moral Domain Theory to examine preschool children’s reasoning about conservation. Three criteria differentiate between moral, personal, and conventional issues: universal application to all people in morally similar situations; not contingent upon societal rules; justification tied to rights and welfare.

Kahn (2001) reported that young children use predominately “harm to nature” justifications when asked about potentially harmful actions such as throwing trash in a waterway. Based on his investigation on environmental moral reasoning of participants ages 6 years to young adulthood across multiple cultures, Kahn proposed a developmental model that progresses from justifications (for prohibiting an action) focusing …

Characterization Of Shark Movements On A Mesophotic Caribbean Coral Reef And Temporal Association With Fish Spawning Aggregations, Alexandra E. Pickard Nov 2013

Characterization Of Shark Movements On A Mesophotic Caribbean Coral Reef And Temporal Association With Fish Spawning Aggregations, Alexandra E. Pickard

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

Habitat use of mesophotic coral reefs by sharks is largely unknown. However, it is well established that mesophotic reefs are the site of spawning aggregations for many species of teleost fish. These aggregations represent seasonal concentrations of potential prey biomass that may influence the habitat use of predatory species such as large sharks. I employed acoustic monitoring to examine the movements of three shark species [lemon shark (Negaprion brevirostris), tiger shark (Galeocerdo cuvier), and Caribbean reef shark (Carcharhinus perezi)] to determine 1) the comparative spatiotemporal patterns of mesophotic reef habitat use by the three …

Rethinking Extensive Green Roofs To Lessen Emphasis On Above-Ground Biomass, Richard K. Sutton Nov 2013

Rethinking Extensive Green Roofs To Lessen Emphasis On Above-Ground Biomass, Richard K. Sutton

Landscape Architecture Program: Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity

In the future, most green roof applications will not be highly visible, yet these roofs will still provide the benefits of heat island reduction, stormwater control and biodiversity for hard-surfaced cities. However, human bias in wanting more biomass and visible blooms leads green roof horticulturalists and their approach of maximizing those aspects down a slippery slope that, in turn, leads to increased hours of labor, over-watering and fertilizing and specifying too many cultivars

Investigating A Relationship Between Nonverbal Communication And Student Learning, Dustin York Nov 2013

Investigating A Relationship Between Nonverbal Communication And Student Learning, Dustin York

Dissertations

Clear and effective communication is essential in today’s society (Smith & Cotten, 1980; Smith & Land, 1981). Nonverbal communication specifically has a vital role in communication. There is inconsistent data on the effect of nonverbal communication used by instructors and the impact on student learning within the higher education environment. This research study sought to find distinct correlations between instructors’ nonverbal communication and a variety of elements related to student learning. This study examined (1) the relationship between standardized measurements of student learning and instructors’ nonverbal communication, (2) the relationship between students’ perceptions of their learning and instructors’ nonverbal communication, …

The Relationship Between Weather And Lunar Changes On Student Achievement And Measures School Districts Utilize To Combat Potential Impact, Kendra Stuart Nov 2013

The Relationship Between Weather And Lunar Changes On Student Achievement And Measures School Districts Utilize To Combat Potential Impact, Kendra Stuart

Dissertations

Classroom disruptions present an obstacle to raising student achievement for teachers and school administrators. This study was designed to investigate potential relationships between weather, specifically barometric pressure, or the lunar cycle, and whether either had a direct correlation with student discipline referrals. The intent was to discover trends concerning barometric pressure or lunar phases and their predictability on the number of discipline referrals. Data were collected on three years of elementary student discipline referrals and compared to barometric pressure readings and lunar phases over the same period. The study also surveyed elementary principals on current measures school districts are utilizing …

Using Spreadsheet To Teach Limit Among College Students, C. Kok Fui, S.N.A. Syed Zamri Nov 2013

Using Spreadsheet To Teach Limit Among College Students, C. Kok Fui, S.N.A. Syed Zamri

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

The commandment of e-N definition is essential in order to learn the concept of limit. In Malaysia, students will only learn this definition in the tertiary level due to its complicated structure. Although technology component was introduced in secondary schools in year 2006, e-N definition was still not part of the syllabus as if learning of this definition was still impossible to secondary students. Furthermore, because of incorrect notions of limit perceived at the secondary level, students find learning e-N definition to be difficult in the tertiary level. These have motivated the researcher to create a technology-aided module that is …

Icaverns: Interpretation, There\'S An App For That!, National Cave And Karst Research Institute

KIP Articles

A quarter of a century ago, cave and karst resources were declared irreplaceable with the passing of the Federal Cave Resources Protection Act. Yet, today, few understand the importance or fragility of these resources. Human interactions in karst areas make these resources highly susceptible to damage. Nonpersonal interpretation digital media products could serve as an important tool to bridge this informational gap. Worldwide, there are hundreds of parks or park- like attractions focusing on cave, spring, or sinkhole resources. Their visitors have a built-in curiosity about these places. Engaging this audience in interpretive programming could greatly increase their speleological knowledge. …

National Park Service Cave Ecology Inventory And Monitoring Framework, National Cave And Karst Research Institute Nov 2013

National Park Service Cave Ecology Inventory And Monitoring Framework, National Cave And Karst Research Institute

KIP Articles

A team developed the Cave Ecology Inventory and Monitoring Framework for National Park Service (NPS) units. It contains information for NPS cave managers across the United States to determine how to inventory and monitor cave ecology. Due to the wide geographical scope of NPS caves and their many different types, the document does not prescribe exact protocols. Instead, it provides guidance for what types of inventory and monitoring are possible, a framework for deciding how to prioritize inventory and monitoring activities, and references to specific protocols that are already in place at NPS cave parks.

Postglacial Faunal Records From Cave Deposits In Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada, National Cave And Karst Research Institute

KIP Articles

In 2009, we initiated an on-going, long term research project that focuses on exploration of fossil-bearing cave deposits in Jasper National Park. Specifically, we were interested in understanding patterns of mammalian re-colonization of mountainous regions following late Pleistocene deglaciation. Our work has focused on the identification of fossil-bearing cave deposits, excavation and sampling of those deposits, and radiocarbon dating of recovered remains. Examined sites have at least an age of 9600 years BP. Research at four cave sites, located in relatively close proximity to one another, is contributing to an improved understanding of the late Quaternary record of Jasper National …

Survivorship Of Ploidy-Variable Unisexual Ambystoma Aalamanders Across Developmental Stages, Christina Marie Casto Nov 2013

Survivorship Of Ploidy-Variable Unisexual Ambystoma Aalamanders Across Developmental Stages, Christina Marie Casto

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Unisexual Ambystoma produce ploidy-variable offspring that differ in survivorship to adulthood. These populations reproduce through kleptogenesis, persisting by stealing genetic material from males of compatible bisexual Ambystoma species (e.g., Jefferson's Salamander A. jeffersonianum, and the Blue-Spotted Salamander A. laterale). Kleptogenesis can result in ploidy-variable embryos within an egg mass because the female may or may not incorporate the male ambystomatid genome. Little is known about the survivorship of ploidy-variable individuals. In previous studies, triploid individuals are the most abundant class, suggesting a greater mortality in high-ploidy (tetraploid and pentaploid) individuals. We assessed the frequency of ploidy levels (determined …

Chronic Alcohol Induces M2 Polarization Enhancing Pulmonary Disease Caused By Exposure To Particulate Air Pollution, Paul Thevenot, Jordy Saravia, Joseph Giaimo, Kyle I. Happel, Tammy R. Dugas, Stephania A. Cormier Nov 2013

Chronic Alcohol Induces M2 Polarization Enhancing Pulmonary Disease Caused By Exposure To Particulate Air Pollution, Paul Thevenot, Jordy Saravia, Joseph Giaimo, Kyle I. Happel, Tammy R. Dugas, Stephania A. Cormier

Faculty Publications

Background: Chronic alcohol consumption causes persistent oxidative stress in the lung, leading to impaired alveolar macrophage (AM) function and impaired immune responses. AMs play a critical role in protecting the lung from particulate matter (PM) inhalation by removing particulates from the airway and secreting factors which mediate airway repair. We hypothesized AM dysfunction caused by chronic alcohol consumption increases the severity of injury caused by PM inhalation. Methods: Age- and sex-matched C57BL/6 mice were fed the Lieber-DeCarli liquid diet containing either alcohol or an isocaloric substitution (control diet) for 8 weeks. Mice from both diet groups were exposed to combustion-derived …

Message from President: Nearly fifty years ago, experts predicted that a chain of discount stores called “White Front” would eventually dominate American retailing in the way that other, currently struggling or now-defunct giants such as Sears, Montgomery Ward, May Company, and Macy’s once achieved substantial, even monopolistic market shares. Maybe a blanched “White Front” could not really fade, but the meteoric coming and going of such dynasties reminds us that peak moments often immediately precede declines. With the advent of the wistful autumn season, campus conversation inevitably turns to the sporty tail that seems to wag those universities that find …
