Identifying With The Help: An Examination Of Class, Ethnicity And Gender On A Post-Colonial French Houselot, Erin Nicole Whitson Nov 2013

Identifying With The Help: An Examination Of Class, Ethnicity And Gender On A Post-Colonial French Houselot, Erin Nicole Whitson

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to attempt to analyze and interpret an outbuilding located in Ste. Genevieve, Missouri, a town established by French settlers in the 1780s. First the functional activities associated with the outbuilding will be determined and examined to best understand where and how the structure fit within the larger property. The activities taking place within/outside the outbuilding--especially those linked to domestic chores--will theoretically paint a clearer picture of who was living and/or working within the structure and who was not. Since little work has been done within the French Mississippi River valley on outbuildings in general, …

Swarm Intelligence As An Optimization Technique, Alma Bregaj Nov 2013

Swarm Intelligence As An Optimization Technique, Alma Bregaj

UBT International Conference

Optimization techniques inspired by swarm intelligence have become increasingly popular during the last years. Swarm intelligence is based on nature-inspired behaviours and is successfully applied to optimisation problems in a variety of fields. The advantage of these approaches over traditional techniques is their robustness and flexibility. These properties make swarm intelligence a successful design paradigm for algorithms that deal with increasingly complex problems. In this paper I am focused on the comparison between different swarm-based optimisation algorithms and I have presented some examples of real practical applications of these algorithms.

Symbolism And Poetics Of Autogenic Space And Structures – The New Design Approach On Mosque As Representative Building (Design Proposal For The Central Mosque Of Prishtina As Case Study), Banush Shyqeriu, Kushtrim Hajdari

UBT International Conference

The congregation Mosque, Masjid (from Arabic, sujúd = prostration to God) is one of the most important institutions of Muslim world, also the predominant built form of Muslim architecture. Having a basic spatial configuration to create “shelter” for prayer, it is evoking how the simple space bears meaning that generates symbolism. This paper tries to de-construct and re-construct the Mosque as a representative built form. By using our Design Proposal for the Central Mosque of Prishtina as Case Study, we emphasize an “organic” approach towards Mosque design through a methodology of integral contextualization and conception as the new “typology”, by …

One-Day Treatment Of Small Molecule 8-Bromo-Cyclic Amp Analogue Induces Cell-Based Vegf Production For In Vitro Angiogenesis And Osteoblastic Differentiation, Kevin W.-H. Lo, Ho Man Kan, Keith A. Gagnon, Cato T. Laurencin

UCHC Articles - Research

Small molecule based regenerative engineering is emerging as a promising strategy for regenerating bone tissue. Small molecule cAMP analogues have been proposed as novel biofactors for bone repair and regeneration, and while promising, the effect that these small molecules have on angiogenesis, a critical requirement for successful bone regeneration, is still unclear. Our previous research demonstrated that the small molecule cAMP analogue 8-bromoadenosine-3’,5’-cyclic monophosphate (8-Br-cAMP) was able to promote initial osteoblast adhesion on a polymeric scaffold via cAMP signaling cascades. Here, we report that 8-Br-cAMP is capable of inducing in vitro cell-based VEGF production for angiogenesis promotion. We first demonstrated …

A Comparison Between Shale Gas In China And Unconventional Fuel Development In The United States: Health, Water And Environmental Risks, Paolo D. Farah, Riccardo Tremolada

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

China is appraised to have the world's largest exploitable reserves of shale gas, although several legal, regulatory, environmental and investment-related issues will likely restrain its scope. China's capacity to successfully face these hurdles and produce commercial shale gas will have a crucial impact on the regional gas market and on China’s energy mix, as Beijing strives to decrease reliance on imported oil and coal, while attempting to meet growing energy demand and maintain a certain level of resource autonomy. The development of the unconventional natural gas extractive industry will also endow China with further negotiating power to obtain more advantageous …

Leadership And International Climate Cooperation, Gregor Schwerhoff Nov 2013

Leadership And International Climate Cooperation, Gregor Schwerhoff

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

Which kind of reaction can a nation or group of nations expect when leading by example in climate policy? This literature survey describes possible positive reaction mechanisms from different fields of economics, some of which have scarcely been linked to climate economics previously. One effect may be behavioral, a reaction motivated by fairness, reciprocity or norms. Second, other nations may interpret the leader's action as a signal on his preference or the value of the objective and adjust their own policy based on the new information. Third, the leader may provide a service to other nations, which decreases their costs …

A Quantitative Assessment Of The Implications Of Including Non-Co2 Emissions In The European Ets, Carlo Orecchia, Ramiro Parrado Nov 2013

A Quantitative Assessment Of The Implications Of Including Non-Co2 Emissions In The European Ets, Carlo Orecchia, Ramiro Parrado

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

Although CO2 emissions stand for most of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, the contribution of mitigation efforts based on non-CO2 emissions is still a field that needs to be explored more thoroughly. Extending abatement opportunities to non-CO2 could reduce overall mitigation costs but it could also exert a negative pressure on agricultural output. This paper offers insights about the first effect while provides a preliminary discussion for the second. We investigate the role of non-CO2 GHGs in climate change mitigation in Europe using a computable general equilibrium (CGE) model. We develop a specific modelling framework extending the model with non-CO2 GHGs …

A Topic Detection Approach Through Hierarchical Clustering On Concept Graph, Xiaohui Huang, Xiaofeng Zhang, Yunming Ye, Shengchun Deng, Xutao Li Nov 2013

A Topic Detection Approach Through Hierarchical Clustering On Concept Graph, Xiaohui Huang, Xiaofeng Zhang, Yunming Ye, Shengchun Deng, Xutao Li

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

Topic detection and tracking (TDT) algorithms have long been developed for the discovery of topics. However, most existing TDT algorithms suffer from paying less attention to: (1) temporal distance between a pair of topics; (2) the mutual effect between highly correlated topic terms. In this paper, we proposed a novel topic detection approach by applying hierarchical clustering on the constructed concept graph (HCCG), which is able to solve aforementioned shortcomings simultaneously. In this approach, the concept is first defined as well as the concept behavior curve. Then, the temporal graph is constructed with concept as vertexes and connected by the …

Nuclear Receptor Coactivators: Regulators Of Steroid Action In Brain And Behavior, Marc J. Tetel, Kalpana D. Acharya Nov 2013

Nuclear Receptor Coactivators: Regulators Of Steroid Action In Brain And Behavior, Marc J. Tetel, Kalpana D. Acharya

Faculty Research and Scholarship

Steroid hormones act in specific regions of the brain to alter behavior and physiology. While it has been well established that the bioavailability of the steroid and the expression of its receptor is critical to understanding steroid action in brain, the importance of nuclear receptor coactivators in brain is becoming more apparent. This review will focus on the function of the p160 family of coactivators, which includes steroid receptor coactivator-1 (SRC-1), SRC-2 and SRC-3, in steroid receptor action in brain. The expression, regulation and function of these coactivators in steroiddependent gene expression in brain and behavior will be discussed.

Cooperative Struggle: Re-Framing Intercultural Conflict In The Management Of Sino-American Joint Ventures, Kathleen J. Krone, Sarah Steimel Nov 2013

Cooperative Struggle: Re-Framing Intercultural Conflict In The Management Of Sino-American Joint Ventures, Kathleen J. Krone, Sarah Steimel

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

Sino-American economic joint ventures are most often studied through a lens of technical rationality that typically emphasizes organizational efficiency, reduces culture to a manageable resource, and views conflict as discrete disruptions requiring efficient handling. Here, we conceptualize Sino-American business partnerships as sites of struggle where co-managers' accounts of intercultural disagreements reveal friction around action, voice, interests, and identity. We propose cooperative struggle as a critical management practice for working creatively with the multiple forms of difference that arise in this organizational form.

Δ9-Tetrahydrocannabinol Is Protective Through Pparγ Dependent Mitochondrial Biogenesis In A Cell Culture Model Of Parkinson's Disease., Ml Zeissler, J Eastwood, Hanemann C Oliver, J Zajicek, C Carroll

Peninsula Medical School

Cannabinoids such as Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9-THC) are neuroprotective in animal and cell culture models of Parkinson's disease (PD). In a PD cell culture model we recently demonstrated that Δ9-THC is neuroprotective through activation of the nuclear receptor peroxisomal proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ). Furthermore, activation by specific agonists rosiglitazone and pioglitazone, has also been found neuroprotective. PPARγ is a nuclear receptor whose activation can lead to the expression of proteins involved in the de novo synthesis of mitochondria. One such protein is the PPARγ co-activator 1 α (PGC1α) as it co-activates NRF-1 mediated gene expression which is essential for the production of …

Integration Of Genetic Algorithm And Particle Swarm Optimization For Investment Portfolio Optimization, R. J. Kuo, C. W. Hong Nov 2013

Integration Of Genetic Algorithm And Particle Swarm Optimization For Investment Portfolio Optimization, R. J. Kuo, C. W. Hong

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

In investment market, investors often pay attention to investment portfolio selection and asset allocation under market risk. Thus, this study presents a two-stage method of investment portfolio based on soft computing techniques. The first stage uses data envelopment analysis to select most profitable funds, while hybrid of genetic algorithm (GA) and particle swarm optimization (PSO)is proposed to conduct asset allocation in the second stage. The evaluation results show that Sharpe value of portfolio based on the proposed method is superior to those of portfolio based on GA, PSO and market index. The proposed method really can help investors robustly obtain gains.
