Wildlife In Managed Forests: An Overview Of Perspectives From The Pacific Northwest, Jimmy D. Taylor Ii
Wildlife In Managed Forests: An Overview Of Perspectives From The Pacific Northwest, Jimmy D. Taylor Ii
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
1. Introduction- Humans rely on forests for fiber, food, water, shelter, recreation, inspiration, and various other benefits. Similarly, many species of native fauna depend on forests to meet their seasonal and annual requirements. Forests in the Pacific Northwest have a longstanding history of providing high quality forest products, and ownership across a complex matrix of forest stands is divided among provincial, federal, state, tribal, and private entities. Over time, requirements to provide forest products have increasingly rested with industrial and non-industrial private landowners. Concomitantly, forest management has evolved and intensified on private lands in response to increases in national and …
Landslides Cause Spatial And Temporal Gradients At Multiple Scales In The Luquillo Mountains Of Puerto Rico, Aaron B. Shiels, Lawrence R. Walker
Landslides Cause Spatial And Temporal Gradients At Multiple Scales In The Luquillo Mountains Of Puerto Rico, Aaron B. Shiels, Lawrence R. Walker
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Landslides represent one of the most severe disturbances in montane forests because the main consequence of their occurrence is loss or downslope redistribution of the majority of the above- and below-ground biomass. We examined among-landslide gradients (size, slope, aspect, age, elevation) on 142 landslides in the Luquillo Mountains, Puerto Rico, created by three storms in 2003–2004. We also examined within-landslide gradients (top to bottom, edge to center, successional development) by reviewing 20 yr of landslide data in the Luquillo Mountains. Landslide abundance and plant successional patterns do not closely reflect the elevation gradient that is characteristic of this mountain range, …

Prions, the infectious agent of scrapie, chronic wasting disease and other transmissible spongiform encephalopathies, are misfolded proteins that are highly stable and resistant to degradation. Prions are known to associate with clay and other soil components, enhancing their persistence and surprisingly, transmissibility. Currently, few detection and quantification methods exist for prions in soil, hindering an understanding of prion persistence and infectivity in the environment. Variability in apparent infectious titers of prions when bound to soil has complicated attempts to quantify the binding capacity of soil for prion infectivity. Here, we quantify the prion adsorption capacity of whole, sandy loam soil …

Wildlife reservoir hosts of bovine tuberculosis (bTB) include Eurasian badgers (Meles meles) and brushtail possum (Trichosurus vulpecula) in the UK and New Zealand, respectively. Similar species warrant further investigation in the northern lower peninsula of Michigan, USA due to the continued presence of bTB on cattle farms. Most research in Michigan, USA has focused on interactions between white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) and cattle (Bos taurus) for the transmission of the infectious agent of bTB, Mycobacterium bovis, due to high deer densities and feeding practices. However, limited data are available on medium-sized …

West Nile Virus Infection In American Robins: New Insights On Dose Response, Kaci K. Vandalen, Jeffrey S. Hall, Larry Clark, Robert G. Mclean, Cynthia Smeraski
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
West Nile virus (WNV) is a vector-borne pathogen that was first detected in the United States in 1999. The natural transmission cycle of WNV involves mosquito vectors and avian hosts, which vary in their competency to transmit the virus. American robins are an abundant backyard species in the United States and appear to have an important role in the amplification and dissemination of WNV. In this study we examine the response of American robins to infection with various WNV doses within the range of those administered by some natural mosquito vectors. Thirty American robins were assigned a WNV dosage treatment …

Since the mid-1900s, blackbird depredation has become an expensive problem for farmers in the Great Plains region of the United States and Canada (Blackwell et al. 2003). Damage to crops from blackbirds costs the growers of sunflower millions annually (Peer et al. 2003). The problem stems from two concurrent events: ripening of sunflowers and fledging of millions of resident blackbirds that must quickly prepare for migration to southern wintering grounds. Multiple methods of protecting crops exist, but none have proved to be cost-effective. For this reason and the safety of the non-target species, a chemical-based repellent might be a good …
Entrepreneurial Success And The Roles Of Social Capital And Social Effectiveness: A Look Into The Young Presidents' Organization, Michael Wojciechowski
Entrepreneurial Success And The Roles Of Social Capital And Social Effectiveness: A Look Into The Young Presidents' Organization, Michael Wojciechowski
Theses and Dissertations
Previous research has indicated that social capital and social effectiveness may have positive influences on entrepreneurial venture success. While the concept of social capital has been a popular topic in research fields, including both social science and economics, few empirical studies have considered the effect of both social capital and social effectiveness in conjunction with the success of ventures created by entrepreneurs. The Young Presidents' Organization (YPO) is a worldwide organization created in 1950 to provide education and support for executives who found themselves in leadership positions with few peers. Today that organization has grown to over 18,000 members. This …

Change From The Inside Out In Tanzania: Investigating Change In A Nonprofit Organization In Bagamoyo, Tanzania, Through Participatory Action Research, Katherine N. Balk
Theses and Dissertations
All over the globe, nonprofit organizations aim to strengthen communities while struggling with the restraints of limited resources. This research study involved Participatory Action Research (PAR) to examine how to build internal capacity in one such organization in Bagamoyo, Tanzania. This study was a partnership between me (the academic researcher) and organizational members and stakeholders of the Baobab Home. Through interviews and meetings, the project focus involved creating written contracts. Over the course of five meetings, contracts were researched, policies and procedures were discussed, and formal contracts were created in Swahili. Findings include a discussion of the role of the …
Called To Lead: An Examination Into The Phenomenon Of Calling, Hughie Jackson Barnes
Called To Lead: An Examination Into The Phenomenon Of Calling, Hughie Jackson Barnes
Theses and Dissertations
Perhaps the most widely known episode of a calling is the burning bush experience of Moses, leader of Israel's sojourn to freedom from Egyptian captivity. At present, the phenomenon of being called to a place, vocation, or career has limited social science research. Indeed, prior to the middle of the 21st century this concept was lacking both theoretically and empirically. Any coverage of the subject of a calling was primarily found in religious periodicals and similar publications (Newman, 2006). In 2007, Scott attempted to advance the discourse on career development by examining callings and the corollary meanings which college students …
Maintaining Adolescent Sobriety With Equine Assisted Psychotherapy: An Experiential Learning Intervention Guide, Elizabeth Jane Ledbetter
Maintaining Adolescent Sobriety With Equine Assisted Psychotherapy: An Experiential Learning Intervention Guide, Elizabeth Jane Ledbetter
Theses and Dissertations
Given the prevalence of substance abuse among American adolescents, the implementation of innovative treatment modalities is highly indicated. The practice of animal assisted therapy, specifically equine assisted psychotherapy (EAP), has been demonstrated to effect positive changes and personal growth within participants and is suggested within this work to be applicable to adolescents in residential substance abuse treatment facilities. Due to the benefits evidenced by the therapeutic modality of EAP, participation is hypothesized to promote and maintain abstinence among this population. Thus, this project focused on highlighting the empirical evidence associated with animal assisted therapy, particularly EAP, as well as reviewing …

A Chicken In Every Lot: The 2007 Chicken Ordinance In Missoula, Montana, Kate Margaret Sheridan
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
In 2007, the City Council of Missoula, Montana passed an ordinance allowing six chickens per urban lot. Missoula followed the lead of many other cities seeking to expand urban agriculture and food security opportunities through microlivestock. This paper gives context to the implementation of a specific ordinance, investigates the benefits and challenges experienced by twenty households in Missoula, and connects it back to the food system as a whole.
Acceptance Of Wildlife Crossing Structures On Us Highway 93 Missoula, Montana, Jeremiah P. Purdum
Acceptance Of Wildlife Crossing Structures On Us Highway 93 Missoula, Montana, Jeremiah P. Purdum
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Wildlife and humans have always interacted on the landscape. However, growing transportation infrastructure and its associated use are causing a large increase in direct and indirect effects on wildlife populations. Humans can also directly be affected, for example, through wildlife-vehicle collisions that impact human safety and lead to economic costs for individuals and society. In some cases transportation and wildlife agencies have implemented substantial mitigation measures along roadways in an attempt to reduce wildlife-vehicle collisions and to provide for safe crossing opportunities for wildlife. Wildlife-specific crossing structures are now increasingly considered in road construction. Reconstruction projects and a range of …
Climate As Assemblage: Imagining An Ecological Metaphysic, Andrea Rae Gammon
Climate As Assemblage: Imagining An Ecological Metaphysic, Andrea Rae Gammon
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Human interventions have resulted in striking changes to the global climate. I work from the understanding of anthropogenic climate change as the product of 250 years of emissions brought about through industrialization and continued by our fossil fuel economies and lifestyles. The instrumentalism of such activities can be traced back to our modern metaphysic, where inanimate matter becomes object and falls away from ‘man,’ the knowing, active subject. In this thesis, I specifically address how this division of passive object from active subject pervades our understanding of climate and conditions the ethics of our human responses to climate change. I …

Nearing The End: Reef Building Corals And Bivalves In The Late Triassic And Comparing Corals And Bivalves Before And After The End-Triassic Mass Extinction Using A Taxonomic Database, Hannah Morgan Elliott Shepherd
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
One of the most important tenants in geology is that the present is the key to the past, but it can also be said that the past is the key to the present. The five great extinction events are some of the key events that can help us to understand how changes in climate and sea chemistry can cause great changes in the ecology of our planet. Today the increase in atmospheric CO2 is causing ocean acidification, which has also been proposed as part of the system that caused the end-Triassic mass extinction. Ocean acidification can be greatly detrimental to …

Pristine Places And Passive People? Responses To Neoliberal Development And Maoist Conflict In Nepal's Northwest Himalayas, Catherine Lee Sanders
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
In Humla District, Nepal, agro-pastoralists' confrontations with forces of change in the last generation have altered villagers' abilities to gain access to scarce resources. Development efforts and Nepal's recent armed conflict, in particular, introduced novel technologies and ideologies that affected Humli vulnerabilities. This dissertation is based on field research comparing two Hindu villages in northwest Nepal during 2009 and 2010. One village had more extensive ties to development than the other, and these villagers and other change agents co-created transitional contexts of vulnerability in the post-conflict setting of rural Nepal. An armed conflict dominated the political landscape in Nepal for …

Dna Barcoding Of Jatropha Curcas, Terence L. Stephens
Dna Barcoding Of Jatropha Curcas, Terence L. Stephens
EWU Masters Thesis Collection
"DNA barcoding involves sequencing a standard region of DNA to be used as a tool for rapid species identification. The cytochrome C oxidase gene (COXI) is widely accepted as the standard barcode for animals and currently there is no barcode for land plants. The Consortium for the Barcode of Life (CBOL) has proposed two regions of DNA to be used as a dual-locus barcode. In this study I examine the two proposed barcoding regions, ribulose-1 ,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (rbcL) and maturase K (matK) for their ease of amplification, discrimatory power, and sequence quality in Jatropha curcas, Jatropha podagrica, Latuca sativa, and …
Identification And Characterisation Of Campylobacter Ureolyticus: A New And Emerging Gastrointestinal Pathogen, Susan Bullman
Identification And Characterisation Of Campylobacter Ureolyticus: A New And Emerging Gastrointestinal Pathogen, Susan Bullman
Theses
Campylobacter jejuni is universally recognized as the leading bacterial cause of human gastroenteritis. However, within recent years a growing number of non- jejuni/coli Campylobacter species have been acknowledged as emerging human and animal pathogens. Advances in molecular diagnostics and development of pioneering culture methodologies have led to the detection of a range of under-appreciated and nutritionally fastidious Campylobacter species, including C. ureolyticus. Herein, we provide the first report of C ureolyticus in the faeces of patients presenting with gastroenteritis and suggest a role for this organism as an emerging enteric pathogen.
Employing a two-tiered molecular study, we report C. ureolyticus …

Development Of A Recombinant Lactobacillus Salivarius For Prophylactic Applications Against Mycobacterium Avium Subspecies Paratuberculosis And Johne’S Disease, Christopher Johnston
Theses
Current whole-cell vaccines against Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis, the etiological agent of Johne’s disease, are unable to provide complete protection against infection. Moreover, such whole-cell formulations interfere with diagnostic tests for bovine tuberculosis (Mycobacterium bovis). The development of subunit vaccines, those which are preferentially based on one, or a select few, immunodominant protective antigens is considered as the realistic next step in overcoming these issues. The (MAP) K-10 genome is a single circular chromosome of 4,829,781 base pairs and encodes 4,350 predicted ORFs. In order to identify MAP specific proteins for subsequent incorporation within a mucosal based vaccine development, a …
Evaluation, Adaptation And Validation Of A Model To Predict Grass Growth In Ireland, Christina Hurtado Uria
Evaluation, Adaptation And Validation Of A Model To Predict Grass Growth In Ireland, Christina Hurtado Uria
Theses
Budgeting grass supply allows producers to minimise the quantity of purchased feed required in the diet of grazing livestock. One tool for managing grass supply could be a mathematical model that can simulate grass growth. The development of such a model would allow better management around the variability of feed supply and help identify feed surpluses and deficits, and therefore increase the accuracy of management decisions. This would be a key feature of profitable milk and meat production systems in the future which will be hugely important as global food demand increases due to population growth. It is forecasted that …

"The Worry That You Are Yourself": Darl's Unforgivable Neurodiversity In As I Lay Dying, Neal Hallgarth
EWU Masters Thesis Collection
"This paper is concerned with the character of Darl Bundren and the repeated motif of madness in William Faulkner's As I Lay Dying. Possible psychiatric explanations for Darl's madness, including linguistic evidence for his psychotic breakdown, are explored. The paper does not agree with the critical use of words such as "insane" or "crazy" as the book itself questions the verity of such labels. Critical analyses concerning Darl tend to be sympathetic but use derogatory language when defending the character. Articles related to the relatively new idea of neurodiversity will counter the backhanded sympathy with which the critics regard Darl. …

Hypoxia-Inducing Factors As Master Regulators Of Stemness Properties And Altered Metabolism Of Cancer- And Metastasis-Initiating Cells., Murielle Mimeault, Surinder K. Batra
Journal Articles: Biochemistry & Molecular Biology
Accumulating lines of experimental evidence have revealed that hypoxia-inducible factors, HIF-1α and HIF-2α, are key regulators of the adaptation of cancer- and metastasis-initiating cells and their differentiated progenies to oxygen and nutrient deprivation during cancer progression under normoxic and hypoxic conditions. Particularly, the sustained stimulation of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), insulin-like growth factor-1 receptor (IGF-1R), stem cell factor (SCF) receptor KIT, transforming growth factor-β receptors (TGF-βRs) and Notch and their downstream signalling elements such as phosphatidylinositol 3'-kinase (PI3K)/Akt/molecular target of rapamycin (mTOR) may lead to an enhanced activity of HIFs. Moreover, the up-regulation of HIFs in cancer cells may …
