Design Of A Running Robot And The Effects Of Foot Placement In The Transverse Plane, Timothy James Sullivan Jan 2013

Design Of A Running Robot And The Effects Of Foot Placement In The Transverse Plane, Timothy James Sullivan

Open Access Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to make advances in the design of humanoid bipedal running robots. We focus on achieving dynamic running locomotion because it is one metric by which we can measure how far robotic technologies have advanced, in relation to existing benchmarks set by humans and other animals. Designing a running human-inspired robot is challenging because human bodies are exceptionally complex mechanisms to mimic. There are only a few humanoid robots designed specifically for running and the existing robots are either constrained to a plane, do not yet exhibit human-like motion, or are unstable.

Identifying And Developing Students’ Ability To Reason With Concepts And Representations In Biology, Trevor R. Anderson, Konrad J. Schönborn, Lynn Du Plessis, Abindra S. Gupthar, Tracy L. Hull Jan 2013

Identifying And Developing Students’ Ability To Reason With Concepts And Representations In Biology, Trevor R. Anderson, Konrad J. Schönborn, Lynn Du Plessis, Abindra S. Gupthar, Tracy L. Hull

PIBERG Publications

External representations (ERs) and their constituent symbolism are of enormous pedagogical value to instructors, especially in the teaching of the submicroscopic world of biology, inherent in disciplines such as biochemistry, immunochemistry, molecular biology and physiology. Whereas symbolic conventions are rigorously applied in physics and chemistry to enhance learning, this is not always true in biology where inappropriate use of symbolic language often leads to confusing ER designs and a range of conceptual, visual, and reasoning difficulties. In this chapter, we present a synthesis of research conducted by our group within these important areas of biology education. We commence by describing …

Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptors Containing Α6 Subunits Contribute To Alcohol Reward-Related Behaviors, Matthew S. Powers, H. J. Broderick, Ryan M. Drenan, Julia Chester Jan 2013

Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptors Containing Α6 Subunits Contribute To Alcohol Reward-Related Behaviors, Matthew S. Powers, H. J. Broderick, Ryan M. Drenan, Julia Chester

Department of Psychological Sciences Faculty Publications

Evidence is emerging that neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) in the mesolimbic dopamine (DA) system are involved in mediating the reinforcing effects of alcohol. Midbrain DA neurons express high levels of α6 subunit-containing nAChRs that modulate DA transmission, implicating their involvement in reward-related behaviors. The present study assessed the role of α6-containing nAChRs in modulating alcohol reward using transgenic mice expressing mutant, hypersensitive α6 nAChR subunits (α6L9′S mice). α6L9′S mice and littermate controls were tested in three well-established models of alcohol reward: 24-hr two-bottle choice drinking, drinking in the dark (DID), and conditioned place preference (CPP). Confocal microscopy and patch-clamp …

Modes Of Dislocation: Jewishness And Deafness In Elizabeth Bowen, Maren Linett Jan 2013

Modes Of Dislocation: Jewishness And Deafness In Elizabeth Bowen, Maren Linett

Department of English Faculty Publications

Late in her life, Anglo-Irish novelist and short story writer Elizabeth Bowen (1899-1973) wondered why critics did not focus more on place in her writing: “Am I not manifestly a writer for whom places loom large?” (Pictures and Conversations 34). Bowen’s powerful concern with location was animated by the instability of her personal life and the life of her century. She felt dislocated by her father’s mental illness and his voluntary incarceration; by her flight to England with her mother at the age of seven; by their peripatetic life in multiple houses and towns; and most of all, by her …

The Case For Interposed Abdominal Compression Cpr In Hospital Settings, Charles F. Babbs Jan 2013

The Case For Interposed Abdominal Compression Cpr In Hospital Settings, Charles F. Babbs

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

Interposed abdominal compression (IAC)-CPR includes all steps of standard external CPR with the addition of manual mid-abdominal compressions in counterpoint to the rhythm of chest compressions. IAC-CPR can increase blood flow during CPR about two fold compared to standard CPR without IAC, as shown by multiple studies in computer and animal models. The technique increases the rate return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) for in-hospital resuscitations from roughly 25% to 50%. Improved survival to discharge is demonstrated in two in-hospital trials. IAC as an adjunct technique is quickly taught and is less complex than most other basic life support maneuvers. A …

This essay traces an association between blindness and intimacy in J.M. Synge’s The Well of the Saints, Florence Barclay’s The Rosary, and D.H. Lawrence’s “The Blind Man,” suggesting that the association participates in an early twentieth-century devaluation of vision and stems from beliefs about knowledge and communication.

Relation Between Corticosterone And Fear-Related Behavior In Mice Selectively Bred For High Or Low Alcohol Preference, Julia Chester, Aaron M. Kirchhoff, Gustavo D. Barrenha Jan 2013

Relation Between Corticosterone And Fear-Related Behavior In Mice Selectively Bred For High Or Low Alcohol Preference, Julia Chester, Aaron M. Kirchhoff, Gustavo D. Barrenha

Department of Psychological Sciences Faculty Publications

Blunted cortisol responses to stress or trauma have been linked with genetic (familial) risk for both alcoholism and post-traumatic stress-disorder (PTSD). Mouse lines selectively bred for high (HAP) or low (LAP) alcohol preference may be a relevant model of genetic risk for co-morbid alcoholism and PTSD in humans. HAP mice show greater fear-potentiated startle (FPS), a model used to study PTSD, than LAP mice. The relation between corticosterone (CORT) and FPS behavior was explored in four experiments. Naïve male and female HAP2 and LAP2 mice received fear-conditioning or control treatments and CORT levels were measured before and immediately after fear-conditioning …

Inhibition Of The Host Translation Shutoff Response By Herpes Simplex Virus 1 Triggers Nuclear Envelope-Derived Autophagy, Kerstin Radtke, Luc English, Christiane Rondeau, David Leib Jan 2013

Inhibition Of The Host Translation Shutoff Response By Herpes Simplex Virus 1 Triggers Nuclear Envelope-Derived Autophagy, Kerstin Radtke, Luc English, Christiane Rondeau, David Leib

Dartmouth Scholarship

Macroautophagy is a cellular pathway that degrades intracellular pathogens and contributes to antigen presentation. Herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) infection triggers both macroautophagy and an additional form of autophagy that uses the nuclear envelope as a source of membrane. The present study constitutes the first in-depth analysis of nuclear envelope-derived autophagy (NEDA). We established LC3a as a marker that allowed us to distinguish between NEDA and macroautophagy in both immunofluorescence and flow cytometry. NEDA was observed in many different cell types, indicating that it is a general response to HSV-1 infection. This autophagic pathway is known to depend on the …

Modulation Of Renin Secretion By Renal Cortical Interstitial Calcium, Douglas K. Atchison Jan 2013

Modulation Of Renin Secretion By Renal Cortical Interstitial Calcium, Douglas K. Atchison

Wayne State University Dissertations

Renin is secreted from the juxtaglomerular (JG) cells of the afferent arteriole of the kidney, and is the rate-limiting enzyme of the renin-angiotensin system. Renin is quantified in vivo as plasma renin activity (PRA). Acutely elevating plasma calcium decreases PRA, but the mechanisms by which this occurs is unknown. The overall goal of our study was to determine how elevated plasma calcium decreases PRA. The calcium-sensing receptor (CaSR) is a ubiquitously expressed receptor that translates changes in plasma calcium into changes in intracellular signaling. JG cells are basolaterally bordered by the renal cortical interstitium, and parathyroid hormone (PTH) positively regulates …

Study subjects are Gulf War I Veterans exposed to DU during friendly fire incidents in 1991 …

Insight Into Human Brain Evolution Through Phylogenetic Analysis And Comparative Genomics, Amy Marie Boddy Jan 2013

Insight Into Human Brain Evolution Through Phylogenetic Analysis And Comparative Genomics, Amy Marie Boddy

Wayne State University Dissertations

As a species, humans are often considered to be unique among mammals, with respect to their large brain size and enhanced cognitive abilities. Humans are the most encephalized mammals, with a brain that is six times larger than expected relative to body mass. Presumably, it is this high degree of encephalization that underlies our advanced cognitive abilities, including the skills needed for complex language and culture. Understanding how large brains evolved can shed light on what makes the human brain unique and introduce possible mechanism for human specific neurodegenerative diseases. This study takes a both a phenotypic and molecular approach …

Investigation Of X Chromosome Recognition: The Role Of Small Rna In Drosophila Dosage Compensation, Debashish Unnikrishnan Menon Jan 2013

Investigation Of X Chromosome Recognition: The Role Of Small Rna In Drosophila Dosage Compensation, Debashish Unnikrishnan Menon

Wayne State University Dissertations

In humans and flies, females have two X chromosomes but males have one X chromosome and one Y chromosome. This leads to a fatal imbalance in X-linked gene expression in one sex. In mammals and in the fruit fly Drosophila, modulation of X chromosome expression is critical for survival. This process is termed dosage compensation. Flies increase expression from the male X chromosome two-fold. This is achieved by the Male Specific Lethal (MSL) complex, which consists of two large, non-coding RNA on the X transcripts (roX1 and roX2) and five proteins. The roX RNAs have a critical …
